As a nurse in the emergency department, Alanna Finnegan is accustomed to taking care of patients with gunshot wounds. But when she is taken hostage with a scalpel blade at her throat, she knows the ruthless gang member won’t hesitate to kill her. Police officer Reed Carmichael doesn’t hesitate to shoot and kill the man holding her captive and she is relieved the nightmare is over. Except, it isn’t.
Reed is placed on administrative leave after shooting Ivan “Ice” Garcia, only to find his rookie partner, murdered. When he takes Alanna home, danger continues to stalk their every move. Nothing makes sense, especially members of a gang having the resources to find them. Reed and Alanna can only trust the Finnegan siblings to keep them safe. With a price on Reed’s head, time is running out. Will they uncover the truth in time to celebrate their new found love?
Too many story inconsistencies and too far a stretch of the imagination for realism. The general story line of events were the same as previous editions in the series where the reader could almost guess what was going to happen next. The ending was flat. The ending was flat. Epilogue again was guessable.
Nurse Alanna Finnegan works in chaos in the Emergency Department she might as well call a second home. But, she wasn't prepared to be a hostage, or for the well-planned attacks that force her and Officer Reed Carmichael to go on the run. Scott's words paint each scene, enabling me, or any reader to almost feel as if the action, or reaction unfolded up close and in personal space!! With each page turned, the danger lurked just out of reach.
While Reed and Alanna were on the run together, her family stepped in to help, mostly representing the different law enforcement agencies in her town. Through each danger that Reed and Alanna face, they become intertwined in emotions that grow stronger everyday. With each bridge behind them being burned, figuratively, they seek the truth which will set them free. I loved the overall message of this book -- love will set you free.
In this case, their love for God, and each other, has given them a sense of hope that all is well and they can trust HIM all the time. I give this book five stars! Scott literally wrapped her words around me, enveloping me into a world of mayhem, dirty cops, drugs, and murder!

Alana is working the ER when her next patient is a cranky gunshot victim who is brought in for treatment in an ambulance after a gang shooting. He is not cooperating with her nor does she have the necessary police protection when this type of homicide takes place. When she insists he cooperate until the doctor arrives he grabs Alana and tries to take het out to run with a car full of gang members. Reed Carmichael is on hand in the waiting room offering needed protection where needed when he must assist in getting her free. This is the next book from Laura Scott's Finnegan Responders series. Another excellent novel in CNN her Christian based romantic suspense books.
CRITICAL RESPONSE was another good installment in the Finnegans Christian romantic suspense series. Alanna is one of the youngest Finnegan siblings and works as a nurse in the ER. She is treating a patient when she is taken hostage and would have been taken from the ER if it weren’t for a police officer there shooting and killing the man holding a scalpel to her throat. But it quickly becomes apparent that there is more to what happened than merely an unstable patient, and Reid and Alanna find themselves caught up in a race for their lives in a battle between rival gangs and corrupt cops. This was an interesting book in the series and I liked the suspense plotline. These books are always well paced with lots of cliffhangers. 4/5 stars.
This is another great addition to this series. I love the warmth, closeness, and friendship among all the family members and their friends. This book has lots of suspense with twists and turns and lots of action. I enjoy the way the Christian way of life is sprinkled into the story. This is a very enjoyable book!
This was an excellent addition in this series involving Alanna Finnegan and Reed Carmichael. Reed rescued Alanna who was held hostage by a gang member in the ED. Reed and Alanna find themselves targets of multiple attacks and have to figure out who was responsible. This story has suspense with twists and turns, wonderful characters, and a great plot line.
Another awesome book in this great series. I love series about families, and this is a big family. It was a definite page turner with non stop suspense and action. Reed and Alanna were great and likable characters I found myself cheering on.
I can't remember the last time I read a book in 2 days, but I couldn't put this one down. I loved it! I love the characters and I really wish I could climb inside the book and become part of the circle of friends/family Laura has created with the Finnegans.
Alaina is taken hostage and Reed saves her life. Later, his partner is found dead. Thus ensues an attempt to frame Reed for the murder but the problem is that the Finnegan's know he is innocent and provide the help to prove it.
Action packed with lots of familiar faces from previous books!
Alanna is working in the DR when a patient takes her hostage. Fortunately officer Reed is there to take control of the situation. But now one gang member is dead and there is a price on his head. After avoiding 2 dangerous attempts on his life while driving home from the hospital, they both are in the crosshairs now! But the bad guys seem to know where they are well before they should, so what is really going on here? Can they and the Finnegan crew figure it out before Reed or Alanna get taken out?
The pace is breakneck and the tone is uncertain yet hopeful with an action and character oriented storyline that has some kisses but no steam. The characters are vivid and engaging. The Christian ideals are mostly shown through prayers and a general outlook. At the very least, read the books in this series in order. But to get the whole Milwaukee scene, start with the SWAT Top Cops series and then read Callahan Confidential series before this one. Enjoy seeing all of these come together in exciting ways.
Nurse Alanna Finnegan was kidnapped within the ED as she worked her shift by an gang member, "Ice" Garcia. As Garcia attempts to kidnap her, Alanna's fears subsided the moment she saw Reed Carmichael. After all is said and done, Reed saves the day and proceeds to save Alanna's life. Throughout more danger, multiple moves for safety's sake. As readers get sucked into the suspense of of this book, danger is ever present. Family helps family and prayer is the link that binds together. As Alanna and Reed face danger together, they find a faith that is everlasting that will lead them to a future filled with love and a family who believes in God and each other. I give this story 5 out of 5 stars!!"
