When Amy Wild goes to live at her great-aunt's tea room on the island of Clamerkin, Granty, her great aunt, welcomes her with a very special necklace - a necklace that gives Amy the power to talk to animals. Granty's terrier, Hilton, introduces Amy to the Clan - a group of animals whose job is to protect the island.
I'm the author of more than forty books, including my successful Pony-Mad Princess series. I write for adults as well as children. and many of my books have been translated into other languages. My Amy Wild - Animal Talker series is popular in Japan, and the Japanese editions look fantastic.
I've always been pony-mad so it's not surprising that my favourite animals feature in many of my books. I even used my research for "There Must Be Horses" as an excuse to buy the horse I had always dreamed of owning. He's a Haflinger so he's a palomino who gets fat really easily.
I've recently started writing books to help other writers. "Plots and Plotting: how to create stories that work" has just been published, and I'm currently working on a sequel called "Scenes and Sentences". I'm also in the process of writing two more Amy Wild books so I'm very busy at the moment.
Harper loves Amy Wild -- she dressed up as Amy for Super Hero and Princess day at school last month! This series is so cute! Amy moves to an island with her parents to move in with her great aunt and help her restore and run her tea room. She's discouraged about the move, until her aunt gives her a secret necklace that gives her the ability to talk to animals! Now, Amy is the Animal Talker of the island, and has to help solve mysteries and intervene on behalf of the animals. As Harper said at school, "Amy's not a Super Hero or a Princess, but she *is* really cool!" Great gentle reads for young kids who are reading above their level.
This is a fun story about a girl who moves to an island from the city, and is given a necklace by her great-aunt that gives her the power to understand animals. The writing is much better than in many early chapter books, and my 7 year old and I both enjoyed the story. She was disappointed by the length though, and felt like the story was just getting started then it was over.
I thought this book was very cute and perfect for your average 1st or 2nd Grader. My 2nd grader gave it a just ok rating. I think it may have needed more action for her. But for beginning self reader books I don't think it could include more action. We are excited to start the next book in the series.
Early chapter book about a girl who moves to a new home and is gifted a magical necklace that grants her the power to talk to animals. Like most books geared for 1st/2nd grade this had a very simple plot and was an easy read. My 6 year old loved it and wants to read them all.
