There was a point in the book where he says, "now that you know the basics of the diet, it should be pretty easy from here." And I was like - what? I don't remember him really breaking anything down. Really feel like I missed something. And the workouts are nothing you can't find in an average issue of Fitness Rx or Men's Health.
I’ve heard great things about Dolce from well-respected MMA and Thai Boxing coaches and I’ve listened to him on a podcast or two before. He seems knowledgeable but I wasn’t all that impressed by this book, which was a combination of some of his life experiences, general workout advice, some recipes and some workout guidelines. I wanted to hear more specifics and details.
No science...no real guidance...just anecdotal evidence and a bit of a bio on the author = a book you can skip.
For your $$$ you get one sample meal plan, a brief grocery shopping list, a handful of recipes for use in the meal plan and example workouts with explanations on how to do the few exercises....and I stress the term "handful" as you can get about the same number of recipes or exercises out of a single fitness magazine. There's nothing about what equipment you'll need...what weights to start at our use, how to increase over time, or any of the other normal workout guidance you'd expect. There's not even anything about how to track your weight loss or performance. I'm supposed to imagine that the UFCs top diet and weight cut coach doesn't have suggestions on how to track progress? That's a basic concept whether you want to lose weight our build muscle and its not covered at all. The author makes a lot of motivational statements but provides an inadequate framework for real world use.
The author seems to think a few well placed quotes from Einstein are proof of his dietary genius when what he should have done was write more into the "how-to" portions of this book. Add to this the horrible formatting on the kindle and I feel like I got robbed. For example, the few images are so small as to be nearly unusable on my HDX. I've got this big beautiful screen and the images in this book are the size of a postage stamp.
The writing isn't all that engaging either. I'm interested in the author's coaching career in MMA but he barely touches on this. Instead, we get stories about how he's been an amazing athlete since he was 13. I'm happy that he's been blessed with a life of fitness...it would have been great if he shared more of his insights and even better if he also had the science to back it up. Otherwise, it just seemed like baseless bragging...as if the reader should just believe him because he says he knows what he's writing about and because he's genetically gifted.
Did I also mention it's very short? I read this in about an hour...it would have been less if I didn't go through each of the recipes. There's just not much here for what I paid. The chapters are short because there just isn't much in them.
Bottom line, this is poorly written, is backed by zero scientific evidence of its efficacy, relies entirely on anecdotal evidence, provides little guidance to those not already in the know, is far too short, skips out on key concepts any basic plan should have, is in no way really friendly to the beginner, and is formatted badly for the kindle. This is an example of an excellent coach cashing in on his fame rather than providing a good book. My recommendation is to skip it and find something better elsewhere to spend your $$$ on.
I found this book after reading "Rowdy" Ronda Rousey's bio. She talks about the Dolce diet and its impact while preparing her fights and hectic schedule. I read the book while in airports and I can tell you is completely worth it. What I love about Mike Dolce is that he has done it all, so he knows how the body works and how you can stimulate it. That being said, I can tell you this is a book written by a man who has tried every single approach to make lean gains, improve your body and life style overall. That credibility and most importantly, Dolce's simple -yet down to earth-approach is perfect for a busy person. The book is filled with awesome and healthy recipes and at the end, really good advice for short but high impact workouts. What else do you need? Not to much chit chat, but the real deal. And that is exactly what Dolce brings to the table.
Mike Dolce has been known for years as the nutritionist for many of the UFC's top fighters. In addition he has held a successful life as a fighter and heavy lifter.
The book is an easy read - straight forward and great information for a longevity diet you can adapt based on your needs (gluten free, athletic, vegan, or healthy being the 4 lifestyles he accounts for). The book promotes raw and organic whole foods with some delicious & quick/easy recipes. Mike also provides full workout plans for every lifestyle/goal. Definitely a game changer.
"The Dolce Diet: Living Lean" by Mike Dolce is the autobiographical account of Mike Dolce, fitness expert, former MMA competitor, and weight management guru. While the book was enjoyable, the primary focus of 'if I can do it, you can do it' with little additional substance behind it left me thinking "great! he knows some tricks, now share!" so I was left feeling a little let down when nothing was revealed. While I was expecting more, the story was written in an engaging enough fashion that I will look into reading one of his newer titles. 3 of 5
After hearing so much hype for so many years, I found this to be a bit of a letdown. There's no real information other than "eat healthy". That said, it's a short, pleasant read with an inspirational tone, and a few recipes that would prove useful to most people.
Although I love the principles of the book, I dislike the primary focus on Mike Dolce's life instead of focusing on diet and recipes. This was my primary purpose of reading the book.
