Vampires of New Orleans #1

Garden of Secret and Shadow

Rate this book
Grad student Amelia Lockhart has lived in New Orleans her entire life. Growing up alone in the worst part of the city, she learned the only person she can depend on is herself. Her luck seems to change when she scores the perfect apartment in the heart of the French Quarter for a steal. It seems too good to be true and she soon discovers—it is.

When Harrison Chamberlin, one of the oldest and strongest vampires in the city, saves Amelia’s life, he opens his home and library to her for as long as she needs. As she’s thrust into a world of vampires, werewolves, witches, and imagination, she soon questions everything she’s ever known about New Orleans, life in the French Quarter, and most importantly—herself.

Madalyn Rae is the pen name for someone who can’t show the people in her life that she writes about werewolves, vampires, penises (I still don’t know the correct plural for that word) and heaven forbid—sex.

In her everyday life, she is a teacher of tiny humans and an avid music lover. She is the mother of two adult children and one adult husband. (That wasn’t a typo)
She lives in the best climate in America and enjoys the Gulf Coast whenever she’s not too lazy to fight with the tourists for a seat on the sand.

Madalyn’s stories stem from her overactive imagination and dreams. She writes what her characters tell her to write, and she hopes you enjoy reading them as much as she enjoys writing them!

I received this as an ARC, and so I will be honest in my review. This is also my first book by Madalyn Rae, with the exception of the prequel, Garden of the Past. Overall, this book is a good read for fans of the Sookie Stackhouse series, as there are many similarities between the two and for fans of the Twilight series. Admitedly, the references throughout the book to the Twilight series made me smile. The plot is engaging enough for someone looking for a quick read, but I would hesitate to recommend this to someone who is used to high fantasy or looking for in-depth character and world building. With that, I have a few areas that I would like to address.
Firstly, there is so much information and action in the book that it leaves little room for world building and plot development. Its saving grace is that it takes place in New Orleans, which is familiar to most and easy to picture the physical world without too many descriptors. I would have also liked to have learned more about each characters background. A couple lines here and there felt blunt, almost as if the author needed to give us something to connect them to the plot, but at the bare minimum.
My second area is the pace throughout the book. It started off great, but once the action started, it never stopped. Days flashed by in a single line that took us right into the next conflict. As a reader, I felt like there was minimal build-up to the next set of events, and it left me in a whirlwind of "What just happened?". There were also a few moments where characters were eating a meal, and over a few lines of dialog, they had emptied their plate without lifting a fork. This just felt unrealistic to me. A single line about finishing their meal in silence would have avoided that odd feeling.
Next, the FMC, Amelia, is given no time to ponder and question her decisions before she flat out agrees with whomever is posing a question, making her seem naive and too trustworthy, which is contradictory to how she is described. She is frequently left alone and just allows the events to play out, forcing other characters to fill her in constantly. There was some inner monolog sprinkled throughout, but it was quickly interrupted by the next conflict.
The next few are minor but important. The plot twists happened so frequently by the end, I wasn't even sure if the person you felt like you could trust you actually could. If this is Madalyn's intention, she succeeded. Staying in line with plot twists, they were predictable but executed well, including the ending.
Overall, it was a good weekend read that was entertaining and enjoyable despite the areas above. I'd give it 3.5 stars, but I will round up to a 4 since the plot has a lot of potential, and the ending left me wanting the next book already.

Omg! What a great book, I absolutely loved this book. It gave me vampire diaries vibe. This book kept my attention from the start, I was thinking about it when I was at work, just counting the minutes until I could continue reading. I loved this book and can not wait until book 2 comes out.

If you are a fan of the Vampire Diaries and books that will keep you on your toes, this one is for you.
I was eagerly awaiting this book after reading about little Amelia in the novella and it did NOT disappoint.
Amelia is now in college and clueless to the supernatural world around her...how she's so clueless in New Orleans of all places I'll never know...but she doesn't stay that way for long.
Enter Harrison. The smooth talking, sweet southern gentleman who saves her from harm. He allows her free reign in his home where she meets Violet and Thomas. The three become good friends and things are going well. Amelia can work on her thesis and eat really good food and have a whole library at her disposal.
Que Viktor. He steals her away from Harrisons home. He is everything Harrison was not. Cruel, vicious, angry. He believes Amelia to be his long lost "love", Penelope. Chaos ensues and Amelia is caught in the middle of a long aged feud between vampires. While in Viktors custody, she meets Sara, who is more than she appears and Colby, the son of the Lycan Alpha of New Orleans.
Tragedy ensues on numerous fronts for the poor human girl who is trapped every way she turns. Who can she trust? Is anyone who they really say they are? Who is the little girl everyone keeps talking about and what does any of this have to do with Amelia? .75/5 on the spice scale.

This was a fantastic read, beautifully written, great characters and a fascinating plot. I read it in one sitting.

You have vampires, werewolves, and witches with twists and turns... I really didn't see coming, there was lies, secrets, and betrayal throughout. I thoroughly enjoyed this book it was a refreshing quick read.

This book was such a pleasant surprise! For about 60%, I was sure it would be a 3-star read. I liked the story but felt it was a little flat with too many vampire cliques. I felt like I was reading a well-written, but common vampire-human romance, with some “Interview with a Vampire” vibes. I am also not a fan of the reincarnation trope, and while it doesn’t play a huge part in this story, I hate the trope. However, the last four chapters completely contradicted all of my initial assumptions, and I loved it! If you like surprise twists, morally grey characters, a naive but strong FMC, classic vampire tropes, a deceptively dark plot, and complicated romances, I strongly suggest reading this book. You should start reading with zero expectations so you can enjoy the story as it unfolds, and the characters develop and interact. I am so excited about the sequel!! I have no idea where the story can go from here, but am eager to find out!

Different from the usual vamp stories.

This took a while to grab me. It's very different from all the other supernatural tales I've read. The pacing is somewhat clunky & uneven, making it harder to connect with the characters initially. In fact, I didn't really fully enjoy it until the last third of the book. I very nearly stopped reading well before that but I'm very glad that I persevered as the denouement is perfection & as for the cliffhanger... I can't wait to see where this goes next.

This fun fast paced vampire novel was entertaining to read. After reading the prequel novella Garden of the Past, I was excited to read the novel that followed. The storyline in the book was good, fun, full of deceit, and even includes found family. I really enjoyed it.

I will say that it felt a little rushed though. Major events would happen in the span of one page. The book would definitely benefit from more detail, either backstory of characters, more world building, or just more detail on the events as they’re happening.

All in all, still a good quick read. If you’re looking for a fun, New Orleans based vampire novel with a touch of spice, this is the book for you!

I received an advance reader copy from the author, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

I received this book as a free ARC review and I’m giving my honest review

I have read Madelyn previous series and enjoyed the books so was more then excited to pick up her new vampire as this author had major potential

This book itself gives of angel / sookie vibes , you can follow the story line there’s a few twists and turns which is good as I did like the ending but I felt at times there was too many
, characters themselves I feel have a just baked recipe I wanted to see some depth in characters , there’s barely anything about the characters life’s etc it’s all consent action , this book could essentially be a tv script and it would play out better on the tv screen

Rounding up bc the last 5 pages got me.

This book was entirely too slow until the last 90%. Amelia was a god awful heroine. She doesn’t trust anyone but also asks them to stay bc she’s scared. She gets kidnapped by Victor, meets Caleb, and then asks him to stay while she showers. Huh? Also, it took her way too long to believe in vampires. Her convo with Harrison telling him she knows a great therapist I was like ugh we could skim 10 pages if she shut up and looked around her. Once we got to cute little Celeste the book got good.

The whole bait and switch of who was the bad guy was kind of meh. I didn’t see it coming- which I’m surprised but once it happened I was like okay makes sense. But it was too neatly packaged. Why did victor think being scary was the move? Still don’t understand. And Harrison writing and planting the letters?

I’m not going to lie, I was completely ready to leave this series behind until the last page. Now I gotta know the truth. Penelope being alive??? wtf is actually going on.

DNF: The storyline is interesting enough, but this book is so full of continuity errors and things that don't make sense from one page to the next. Amelia's mom doesn't return at some point when she's 12, but then Amelia leaves home when she's 18? They're in a garage, but suddenly he's covered in moonlight? Too many things like this and I just had to stop.

Amelia has not had an easy life, and yet, here she is working on her doctoral thesis. She found the perfect apartment, enjoyed her job as a barista, and met an interesting man in one of her classes. Everything was great, until a vampire tried to kill her, and the man she met, just hours earlier, saved her life. Vampires are real? What else is New Orleans hiding?

I rated it ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.5

“I believe in helping others and showing love even when it’s not returned. I believe love is the center of the universe, and our job while being here is to show others love, no matter how much it may hurt. I believe that’s what God is: Love.”

Oh my gosh this book!

300 pages of vampires and werewolves and doppelgängers.

I loved it! Even along with the cutest immortal child ever and some making fun of twilight moments too.

Warning it does end on a cliffhanger though and now I really want to dive into the next book!

Rating: 4/5
Spice: 1/5

This novel is a fast-paced story that I feel shares similarities with Vampires Diary. It is about ones identity and every turn if full of plots and intrigues. The things you thought you knew can soon turns out to be false. Who do you trust? What is real? Why are you in the middle?

I enjoyed this story. Usually, I have a problem to bond and get invested in fast-paced stories but by the end of this story I was feeling well merged into the world and could sympathise with the characters, even if I don’t agree with them. The main character Amelia is trust into a new world and she doesn’t know what to believe and how to handle all the changes. She is just a puppet and others are pulling her string, trying to guide her to where they want her to go. In the end of the book, I can feel her confusion and her struggles, and I fear that her temporary piece might not last. (If it was real to begin with). There are still so many things we don’t know and the cliff hanger at the end didn’t make it better. Are we safe? Is this just another plot? Who can we trust? (If any?) What is in store for our main character? Is all the secrets and intrigue truly solved? So many things we don’t know, and I hope and pray that we will get the answers to our questions in the next novel.

Garden of Secret and Shadow
By Madalyn Rae
3⭐️

Living in a world where the impossible exists and we are blissfully unaware is such a gift. Well that’s what Amelia thought. But what do you do when your thrown head first into the world that is supernatural, said to look like someone long since past and are being hunted for no other reason than you look like someone they once knew and want you to belong to them?

Review:
I liked this book. It was well written and there well thought out. Vampire Romance and a sprinkle of Werewolves. There was mistaken identity forbidden love friends to enemies. Was good. There were however some holes that I noticed in the plot or places where the story slipped and could use some clarification or cleaning up. Each time I thought I had Everything figured out there was a turn or twist. The plot twists were good but did leave me a little confused it was like a 180. Whereas maybe a little less of a drastic turn of events or maybe even a few more hints early on would have helped ebb some of the confusion. Overall it was a good read and I really liked the twist at the end and look forward to book 2 to find out more about Amelia and her new life. I HAD THE PLEASURE TO ARC READ THIS BOOK AND PROVIDE AN HONEST REVIEW.

This gave me such amazing tvd, trueblood, and twilight vibes…. New Orleans and vampires I mean what’s more classic and amazing.
Poor Amelia got herself caught up in a sticky love triangle!! I love that Harrison rescued her and the story got going and never stopped. Usually I like more world building but being that New Orleans is somewhere I’ve been often I felt at home in this story.
It wouldn’t be a love triangle without naughty victor entering and taking Amelia that reminds him of his lost love Penelope!
The story was so good and just the vampire book I needed.
Can’t wait for the next one!

I really wanted to

Love this. The premise is good, the book is not. There's so little character development, it's impossible to fall in love with any of the characters.
The actions are abrupt and disjointed. They start talking about or doing one thing and suddenly it's a whole different thing and you're left wondering how they got to here, when they were just right there.
The whole thing needs some serious fleshing out.

This book has been one of my favorite vampire novels of all time. There's romance, action, mystery, and twists and turns you won't be expecting. You'll fall in love with some characters and fall in hate with others. Amazing read, I recommend it to anyone who loves a good paranormal romance.

E ciudata acea faza in care are loc acea cina, si toata acea presupusa eviscerare.

I’ve said I love books set in New Orleans and this is no exception. I was impressed by how quickly I got into this book, I breezed through it and was halfway in before I knew what was happening. This is a vampire story, elegant yet down to earth, simple yet nuanced. The lore and world-building are nicely done, and the different characters give the story so much depth.

I loved the relationship between not just Harrison and Amelia but also between them and the rest of the characters. There’s an underlying found family aspect to it which made the story even more enjoyable. The vampires and other creatures have a “they’re just like us” feel as well. I also loved that the enemies are not just “put there” with a “something ambiguous happened in the past” trope, there’s a relationship that exists and evolves between the “bad guys” and the main characters. I especially love it when a book surprises me with twists and turns, and this book delivered!

I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

I loved this book and would love to read more from this author. If you like the Sookie Stackhouse series and The Originals, I think you’ll enjoy this book.
