Science Fiction lovers won’t be disappointed

For those seeking an action packed space adventure that isn’t afraid to ask the hard questions about what it means to achieve peace, ‘Sojourn’ is the book for you.

Inspired by space operas that have earned their place in the annals of history (Star Wars, Star Trek), ‘Sojourn’ feels both familiar and new. While many of the story beats and characters tread ground similar to those that have come before them; it is a testament to the skills of writers Timothy Sproule and Daniel Smyth that the narrative they have crafted feels innovative rather than imitative.

The series embodies those old fashioned values of courage, friendship, loyalty, love, trust and faith. Values which are needed more than ever in today’s world. The characters and world-building are two particular standout moments, which highlight the skill of the authors; as they successfully craft a universe that feels lived in, inhabited by people who feel very real. Each character stands on their own, distinct in both appearance and personality, as they are thrust into an adventure that will keep readers hooked from beginning to end.

Pacing is neither rushed nor drawn out, Sproule and Smyth manage to strike a very good blend between fast-paced, high-stakes action, and the quieter moments that mix both tenderness and humour.

While the book does suffer from issues that underscore every new author’s first foray in serious writing (repetition of words of names within the same paragraph, character bonding occurring a little too quickly), these are minor issues that do not detract from the entertainment value of the literature.

In an era of sequels, remakes and reboots, it can be such a breath of fresh air to discover someone who dares to tell an original story; a diamond in the rough amidst the desert of creative bankruptcy. Something different. Something ‘new’. All I ask is that you give this little piece of the ‘new’ the chance it deserves to shine, you might just find yourself as enraptured as I was.

Inspired by many great works of modern science fiction, the story of Sojourn is about a great war between two alien factions, the Krate Imperium and the United Alliance, with humans caught in between the chaos.

This book has everything a lover of sci - fi would want, epic space battles, interesting and likeable characters, exciting technology, monstrously creepy villains and is packed with fascinating lore that stretches over a millenium. Particular favourite characters include Dante and Tori.

A strong start to a series I am sure to enjoy and I would highly recommend
