Lady Knights #3

A Spinster's Last Stand

Rate this book
The gentlemen of the ton may have returned from war, but the Lady Knights of England are just beginning…

Disaster. Disgrace. Despair. Ethelreda McGovern has failed the Lady Knights, the Queen, and herself. Her punishment? Banishment would be appropriate. Forced retirement seems inevitable. But what actually happens is so much worse.

The least maternal of the Lady Knights, Ethelreda is dreading her new governess to the children of Sir George Caldwell. Ethelreda has never turned her back on her Queen and she shall not do so now—even if it means wiping noses and reading children’s fairytales. Unlike her fellow Lady Knights, Red has never wielded seduction as a tool. But when she meets her new employer she is sorely tempted…

The horrors of Waterloo ought to be behind him. Instead, the ghosts of his past follow him back to England and join forces with the painful memories awaiting at home. This wounded soldier’s body has healed, but his soul is another story entirely.

Sir George loves his children and has done his best, but the situation has gotten out of hand. The governess who arrives on his doorstep might be a self-declared spinster, but she’s not the gray-haired, traditional type of help he expected. Red’s spirit is as wild and free as her crown of fiery hair. And George is attracted to her with the intensity of the honeybees he studies seeking out nectar. But he’s already seen one wife to the grave… can he bring himself to be vulnerable to another?

Before long, Red is struggling to remember why she’s held herself apart for so long. She is finally ready to give in to the pleasure George offers in every embrace. Until her mission falls apart and the situation takes a turn for the deadly.

THE LADY KNIGHT GOVERNESS
Ethelreda McGovern as Ethelreda Trudeau, enters the home of Sir George Caldwell late of His Majesty's Fifth Regiment of Foot. As the governess to his children, she is the least maternal of the Lady Knights. Her job is to capture, Antoine Legrand, an assassin. No one knows what the assassin looks like and the connection to Oxley Park. Attention to detail and her skill with weapons, Red is confident she will find this assassin. As she searches for Legrand, she grows to love George and his children. When the assassin strikes, she's ready. This book may start out slow, but soon picks up the pace for a fast finish as all the pieces start to fall into place. Red is a Lady Knight that could give James Bond a run for his money!
Very, very HOT!

Disclaimer: I haven't read the previous books in the series, and jumped straight into this one.

Ethelreda "Red" McGovern is posing as an governess (tongue in cheek, I know!) in retired soldier Sir George Caldwell's household - in the hopes of apprehending a dangerous assassin working on Napoleon's behest. George, who has been an absentee father for most of his life, struggles in his role as a father and guardian of two intractable children.

The Spinster's Last Stand is a historical romance/ action/ mystery (which I LOVE!), which falls prey to the pitfalls of this genre - conveying a complete and believable story with a limited page count. One of the aspects this story struggled with is the balancing the competence of a military hero (who's survived Waterloo!) and an Elite!spy heroine who is hiding her martial abilities from him. The assassin arc, also dissatisfied me because of the heroine's investigative blunders.

I also was not quite onboard the romance (lust yes, romantic love no) - it was more to the style of 'tell, not show' and I never knew how and why they fell in love.

My thanks to Netgalley and the publishing team for the eArc, in exchange of an honest review

The third book in the series & whilst it could be read on its own reading in order is what I’d recommend. This series is different as we have female knights, I must admit I do have to suspend belief but it’s fiction, it’s entertaining & I enjoyed it. I really liked both George & Red & loved the chemistry between them & I felt they certainly fell in lust but love well the jury’s out on that. A delightful read with lots of action & a charming couple
My review is for a special copy I voluntarily read

Wow this series just continues to knock it out of the park this and Grace Calloway’s series are my fav of the historical lady spy sub genre. Red is great with weapons and above being enticed by men and till she meets George our hero with guilt over what happened during his time serving his country, the state of his relationship with his children, and the state of his marriage when his wife passed away. This book is so steamy and has a great plot that helps build her relationship with George. I recommend this series and can’t wait for Janes book. Thank you NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for my honest opinion.

I just started reading Cara Maxwell in Aug, 2022 so she is a fairly new author. This is my 11th book by her that I’ve read. I am really enjoying this series. I had said for one of her previous series, I do like a bit more steam in my books but they were still good reads. Well Book 1 and 2 of this series, was freakin’ hot. The sex was so yummy! It has SOOO much steam. Couldn't wait to read this one.

I enjoyed Red and George's story. I have loved the suspense and intrigue of this series. I like George's personality and his story. Overall a good read.

Wow! What an most steamy love story that this was. There was no way I expected of all that transpired in this love love tale to happen. So much it was romantic, enduring, emotional and heartfelt. The male main character George immediately stole my heart.
His struggle to make everyone happy while trying to hold himself together on the inside is what made this book worth reading. I really wanted to know how he was to conquer all what has happened at Waterloo to coming home to his children as a stranger. George and the children’s struggle to connect was so genuine and worth the read. The female character Red was amazing.
Her character is so strong and intelligent. I love how she was written for this story. The book says that George held the title as a military Colonel, but I think that it is Red who navigated the journey through this book as the Colonel. She immediately new the sneaky tricks that the Kids, Eveline and Archie were up to. Her ability to balance the different personalities and strong defensive mind war games between the children, while at the same time tracking down a dangerous assassin was a fun and intriguing tale.
I do feel that the writer could have added more to the story of Red Chas down the Assassin. I would have love to read more of it. I think that having that part of the story would stand up well to what the plot dictates. However the writer did a good job of keeping Red’s objective as a thought in her downtime from the kids. Did the plot coincide with the characters objective yes and no, but as I previously stated adding more to the assassins story would have been great for the suspense.
The twist and the turns that the story could have taken. Although I was not to terribly disappointed that the story’s main focal point was surrounded around the intense romance on Red and George. The pages seemed to move to fast when it came to their story. That George may have trouble in excepting the challenges that Waterloo has brought down on he and his men, but when it came to Red being in this man’s presence, he was just a randy male. Who knew that George has the hots for a curvy, voluptuous woman.
And that was who Red was. Red may know how to fight off assassin’s in and evil villains, but when it came to George’s hands - she had no chance. The erotic scenes these two created was so provocative that it was so good. The writer did an exceptional job of describing and or detailing these scenes. They definitely fulfilled my imagination.
The writer did a wonderful job of keeping this book an easy read that I felt worked well of having this book recognized as a fun read. I give this book two snaps and a twist. Until next time my fellow readers. Read on! I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.

I am loving this series!!

I have waited for Lady Ethelreda "Red" McGovern to have her HEA. It did not disappoint. Sometimes it is the quieter ones that have the deep nurturing instincts. She acts the gruffest, but she is wonderful! Her assignment to be a governess gave her an outlet for her nurturing that I don't think she knew she had.

Sir George Caldwell, a former colonel in Her Majesty's army, is in over his head when it comes to his children. They have run off several governess' and are too much for him. Ultimately they are just looking for love, attention and snuggles. He carries some deep regrets and feelings of responsibility for several different things in his past.

This was a story of building the foundations for a strong family. For helping to heal hurt feelings and building trust. It was about letting go of baggage and discovering the strength of being part of a family. There was the underlying mission for Red, but the family was the main focus. The trauma from fighting in America and on the continent against Napoleon at Waterloo left George fighting demons that spilled over to his family. Red helped him start to learn to handle them better.

The children were great secondary characters. Sassy, occasionally irreverent, very smart and yet highly protective of each other. There were typical arguments between siblings, but they would defend the other at great cost. It was fun seeing them grow to trust and care for Red. It was touching to see that trust extend to George, though that took at while longer.

When Red finally comes up against her mission and the danger, I was surprised! I had an image in my mind that was totally wrong. I was shocked that such a grievance could be carried to such lengths. I was glad to see Red and George working so well as a team. I had hoped for a bit more trouble to have been meted out before it was resolved, children were involved, but that is more about my protective nature.

The Lady Knights of England is an interesting concept for a series. The Duchess of Guilford, Miranda, is the head of the organization and she knows each of her agents so well. As she assigns each to a mission I wonder if there isn't a smidgen of matchmaking in the back of her mind. Yes, each of them have the best skill set for their mission, but I still wonder. I also wonder, and secretly hope, she can have her own HEA.

A Spinster’s Last Stand by Cara Maxwell is another of the Lady Knights series. For some reason, this book didn’t really grab me. Not sure why as it had good characters and a decent plot. Sometimes you just don’t connect. Ethelreda McGovern was a spinster, by choice. She was also part of an exclusive group of women working undercover for the queen, the Lady Knights. She had been in a small town for several months, establishing her false identity when the time came to embrace her assignment and go and meet the family for whom she would be the new nanny. She was not looking forward to the nanny part. When she arrived Sir George Caldwell, himself, answered the door. Where were the servants? Then she met the children: both deprived of love, showing it in different ways. The daughter, Eveline, had the makings of a lady knight. Red could see it in her eyes. Archie just wanted to be a little boy. Their father summoned them with a whistle and they marched and stood with military precision. This didn’t look like fun, but she was here to catch an assassin, not get involved with the family.

Sir George had been at Waterloo and had, what we would now call PTSD, both nightmares and daymares. He didn’t know how to cope and often when out on his own, sometimes for weeks. It had left the children stunned. Beyond that, he was a good man and wanted to be a good father, but he had terrible memories of his wife and earlier life. Red was courageous and very bold. She loved her life and was proud that her sisters had made good marriages. She was confounded, though, trying to determine who the assassin was and why he was here. She also then had to cope with her growing feelings, not only for George, but for the children, as well. Excellent and interesting characters. Decent plot as the assassin was revealed and detained. It was a job well done even if I had trouble connecting with it.

I was invited to read a free e-ARC of A Spinster’s Last Stand by Dragonblade, through Netgalley. All thoughts and opinions are mine. #Netgalley #Dragonblade #CaraMaxwell #ASpinstersLastStand

Lady Ethelreda McGovern, Red to her friends, is convinced her rustication in the country is the prelude to an early and forced retirement from the Lady Knights for bungled up missions. But it’s much worse! For her new mission she’s to infiltrate Sir George Caldwell’s household as the new governess to his two children. She’s skilled with knives, experienced at close combat and catching villains. How bad could children be? No, sticky hands and runny noses will not deter her from the mission! Their father however…

War wounds healed, George returned home from Waterloo haunted by horrors and dreading the painful memories awaiting him. In his absence, his wife had died and now his son and daughter had only him, a shell of a man. He loved them dearly, but he just couldn’t handle them.
He’s only too happy when the new governess with stellar references seems to find her footing with them. A spirited and spunky, redheaded, self-declared spinster with the most enticing luscious curves…

Once a rake and unable to resist, George starts the game of seduction, and Red starts wondering why she stayed on the sidelines of romance for so long… Of course, that’s when her tedious mission suddenly gains momentum and a deadly edge. Her duty as a Lady Knight takes precedence, and her heart will wait. At least she hopes he will…

📚 Yes! This was just one of those well-written, witty, fast-paced, utterly enthralling tales I just couldn’t put down! Red is this wonderful, focussed, buxom heroine with the biggest heart. Children are not her thing, yet she steps right in to give them the attention they crave and help their father with his issues. All this without losing sight of her mission. Granted, she might get distracted a bit, but in the end, she heals a family and saves the day. Luckily even broken and traumatised George realises what an exceptional gem she is before it’s too late.
And yes, there's some delicious steam in there too!

A very nice reaad!

This series started super interesting, than the second book didn't feel that great, but this one!
To be honest, I was pretty invested to read Ethelreda's story, I found her to be very interesting. And this book took her character into a very nice adventure.

She is part of a group of women spies in service of the Queen, and now she is tasked to find a French assassin, while working as a governess for an ex captain who fought at Waterloo. While warming up to the children, she also fall in love with this very troubled and charming captain, something pretty unexpected for the woman who was more interested in fighting than men.

From all the books in the series, her story is somehow the most common, the least extraordinary in terms of imagining spy guests. But it succeeds on keeping it all surprising, unexpected, fun and full of action. I was so taken aback with who the spy was! Which is so refreshing!

I loved who well the book was written, it kept me on my toes, but it was equally charming in its romance development and endearing when building the family relationships. Each character has a special voice and they are all nicely constructed.

I received a copy of this in order to share my view on it.

Another new author for me, Cara Maxwell has created this series around strong, independent women who are members of a secret group dedicated to thwarting enemies of Britain. An unusual premise which definitely intrigued me, and each story stands on its own although there are references to the other Lady Knights. Ethelreda/Red is a feisty lady with sword skills as her speciality, she is assigned to Oxley Park to infiltrate the household in order to catch an infamous French assassin. She will pose as a governess to George Caldwell's two children. She does not anticipate her reaction to the master of the house which threatens to cloud her judgement and the success of her quest. George is a soldier recently retired with his own ghosts to banish adding another layer to the plot. There is a decent solid plot to this book, rather more steamy than I expected but a great read nevertheless. The characters are well rounded and believable and the author creates a complete picture of the house and the lives of the residents. I look forward to her next book and will certainly follow the rest of this series. Thanks as always to Dragon blade publishing and Netgalley for an ARC of 'A Spinster's last Stand'. A solid 5 stars.

This is the third installment of the Lady Knights series. Ethelreda, Red, has failed at her mission as a Lady Knight, and now her punishment is to be a governess to Sir George Caldwell's children. The punishment couldn't any worse, because Red doesn't have a maternal bone in her body. But under this guise, she must carry out her mission and capture the assassin, Antoine Legrand. Only she never expected desires and passions to be stirred by her employer. George loves his children, but things were getting out of hand and he was in desperate need of help. He never expected that help to come in the form of a fiery red-head with a wild and free spirit. A wounded soldier, he has put the horrors behind him. Although his body has healed, he has a long way to go before the same can be said for his soul, and Red just may be the person to help him with that.
The story captured my interest from the very start and kept me engaged till the end. The storyline flowed smoothly and the plot twists had plenty of suspense and intrigue to keep me interested. Definitely a captivating addition to the series!

Both the suspense and the romance in this intriguing novel move slowly but as the plot ramps up, so does the attraction between Lady Knight Ethelreda and the suspense becomes quite intense. The book is well-written and as with other books by this author, I did not want to put it down. Sent to the home of the widower Sir George Caldwell as a governess to his unruly children, Red's initial introduction to the family had echoes of the movie, The Sound of Music as the beleaguered George takes a military stance in order to cope with being a father. As Red makes inroads into winning the family's trust and respect, she never forgets the reason why she has actually been sent on this assignment as it is her last chance to redeem herself. I enjoyed the interaction between Red and the Caldwell family, the children bringing both humor and heartache, and the retired military man facing his own demons, bringing home to one the horror of war. Ultimately, Red's quest is successful and the main characters are brought together in a heartwarming conclusion. I received a copy of this book as a gift through Dragonblade Publishing and NetGalley and this is my honest and voluntary review.

"A Spinster's Last Stand" by Cara Maxwell offers a tale of second chances, unexpected attractions, and the Lady Knights of England, but it falls just short of being an amazing read. The story introduces us to Ethelreda McGovern, a Lady Knight who faces punishment and banishment but is instead assigned the role of governess to Sir George Caldwell's children.

Ethelreda, or Red, is not the typical governess. Her fiery spirit and unconventional ways make her stand out, and as she navigates her new role, she finds herself tempted by her employer, Sir George, a wounded soldier haunted by his past. The attraction between them is undeniable, but their journey is complicated by the shadows of their histories and the dangers that arise.

While "A Spinster's Last Stand" is a good read with well-drawn characters and a unique premise, it doesn't quite reach the level of being amazing. The characters are engaging, and the story has its moments of intrigue and passion. However, it may not fully deliver on the potential of its premise, leaving readers wanting a bit more depth and development in certain areas.

I have waited long for Red’s story. It was filled with all the fire and ferocity that is Red herself. Taking a post as a governess was bound to challenge her. She is not maternal, not patient, not anything you would expect of a nurturer. At least, that’s what she believes. But Red has never backed down from a challenge and like every other, she takes to the position with her whole heart and soon gives it away to the Caldwell family. I was captivated by the growing love between Red & George, but equally captivated by her love for his children. She is everything that is needed to heal this family. The Lady Knights never fail to bring the action, the suspense and the drama and I am here for it all! Cara writes with such a clever hand that wraps you up in the emotion. I thought my heart would burst during Eveline’s conversation with her dad, that girl has all the potential of the next generation of Lady Knights. I cannot wait for Jane’s story next, I just know it’s going to exceed all expectations. Jane is ever the over-achiever.

Heat Factor: It’s spicy but it’s not high heat.

Character Chemistry: They absolutely have chemistry in their own little bubble.

Plot: Red is part of a secret group called the Lady Knights, and her new assignment is to pose as a governess in a house where a suspected assassin is hiding. Sir George has returned from Waterloo and is pushing his children away in order to process his trauma, guilt, and grief.

Overall: This was a very sweet read, but the suspense plot wasn’t as meaty as I’d hoped.

I enjoyed the previous two books in Cara Maxwell’s Lady Knights series and “A Spinster’s Last Stand” is a good addition. It is definitely a standalone as all three books thus far have at least somewhat overlapping timelines. The lady knight at issue in this book is Ethelreda “Red” McGovern, known for her abilities in hand to hand combat. She goes undercover as a governess in the home of former soldier Sir George Caldwell to capture a French assassin and finds lust, love, and danger.

Red is fantastic. She is strong and knows it. She has no qualms about walking towards danger and protecting others from it. Sir George took some time to grow on me. His treatment of his children is not great and neither is his habit of running away. But Red breaks through his pain and subtle change is made. The level of change however is not unbelievable, and while the time they spend together is short, it is still months versus days as it is in so many romances. Excellent steam.

4 stars. Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for a complimentary ARC of this book. The opinions herein are my own.

What a shocking ending who the villain is! I've read all the stories in the series, and it is a standalone.

The MC are great together. I did think their attraction was too soon, but they did work at a couple. The H held himself apart from his children but certainly not with the h. He showed her love and so many feelings that he kept from his children.

The h was a balm to his soul for sure. She isn't your normal Governess. She is trained as a spy and can use many weapons. When her assignment has her being a Governess, she feels out of her depth. She can't imagine herself take care of children with running noses. But, as she has helped the H, she does so with the children.

There is suspense, violence, intrigue and a huge twist I didn't see coming! Lovemaking outside of marriage, heat level 4+ out of 5. A few crude words used and the Lord's name once I think, and a couple typos.

No cheating, no cliffhanger, HEA, some romance, and steam. I can't improve on the blurb, just giving you some extra tidbits to decide whether to purchase, which I recommend! (ljb)

This is the third installment in Cara Maxwell's new "Lady Knights" series. I've read all three, in order and have enjoyed every word. Cara is a gifted writer that uses romance, seduction, humor and a few sidekicks (Eveline/Archie) to introduce you to her characters. Captain (Sir) George Caldwell and Lady Ethelreda McGovern are not looking for love. He needs help with his hellions and she's a Lady Knight posing as his new governess. He's not looking for love, she's a confirmed spinster so of course they find each other. The journey to their HEA is worth the read, and it had a few unexpected twists along the way. You won't be dissappointed.

This is a stand-alone book, but there is so much to understand and look forward to if you read them all, but doesn't have to be in order. They appear to be happeing close together. Ready for Jane's story next.

The book has plenty of entertainment if you set aside the uneasy feeling of disbelief that “Lady Knights” can exist in historical England. The plot and pacing keep you progressing in the storyline, and the characters are likable. The author has a solid voice with intriguing internal monologues that give depth to the characters. I wanted things to work out, a considerable plus in a Romance.

There are some intimate “spicy scenes” that can be read or skimmed through without losing the story. Some weaknesses are the few cringing moments when I had to remind myself to suspend the disbelief that a female undercover “knight” could exist in history. Even then, the story is solid, with my favorite tropes of second chances, spinsters getting happy endings, and falling in love with the “boss.”

3.4/5 crown rating. Spicy “R’ rating

This series of historical romances centres around the heroines all working secretly as Lady knights. Each one has her own story or assignment, so you can read any of them alone .

Lady Elthelreda McGovern disappointed herself on her last assignment and hates being sidelined. Now at last she has a new one but, the very idea of wiping snotty noses and looking after children as part of her disguise is daunting.

Sir George Caldwell retired from years at war to look after his children.  The memories of the blood on his hands, both at war and at home cause him extreme anxiety.

An action packed story that is so different to the usual ones of this era. I loved all the characters especially our heroine.

Great fun.

Physically strong heroine-love it

I enjoyed the first two in the Lady Knights series and this one was no exception. This one follows Ethelreda or Red to Sir George’s estate to pose as a governess while trying to determine who amongst them is the French assassin. While George is coping the best he can as a widower and suffering from PTSD after Waterloo. Full of intrigue but also plenty of room for George and Red’s love story to develop. I could not put this one down but also did not feel the story was rushed. The author did a great job concealing the assassin until the end. I also loved that the FMC was a fuller bodied heroine that knew her body was strong and capable. I can’t wait to read Jane’s story.

"Red" is a lady spy/assassin sent to find a traitor in household of a former soldier. She poses as a governess to his children but has no clue about childrearing and does not seem to be very affectionate.

Once Red and George "fall in love" and decide to marry she is still going to take assignments and work as a spy! And she knows ways to make sure they have no children so that it does not interfere with her work and because she is not maternal or loving at all.

I could not get into this book at all. It took forever to read. I couldn't connect to the characters or the story. I don't really care for spy books but do like a good mystery. This just did not hit the spot for me.

This is such a fun, entertaining, intriguing read. I love this world of the Lady Knights and getting to see each of them go on an adventure and find love along the way – is perfect. All of these females have a hidden side that is not usual for their times, but makes them who they are. George and Red are interesting, captivating, relatable characters. They captured my attention from the start and held it until the very end. The children are so entertaining and add the scene and the fabric of the story every time they are on page. I enjoyed the romance and the underlying subplots.

This was a fine read. I did wish there was a less task based reason driving the plot, I kept feeling as though talk of the mission disrupted the build of the romance for me and so it ended up falling flat. It also made it all feel rushed. The spice is about a 2🌶️.

I had never read a historical romance where the guy has PTSD. I think it was very well described and I really enjoyed how Red helps him through it. Her relationship with the children is great too... even if we don't really realize it until the very end. I would love to read more from you.

This was a fun read. I enjoyed everything about it. Steamy and funny in parts. George and Red are great characters and I loved the children. Very well written, I didn’t want to put the book down.

He is struggling to make his family whole but being plagued by the nightmares of PTSD is making it difficult. His guilt does not help and he doesn’t know he and his children are in danger. She is there to uncover an assassin but turns out to be the answer to making the family complete and becoming their protector. Action filled, steamy scenes, charming characters you will easily fall in love with makes for a very enjoyable read.

I received an ARC from Netgalley and leaving my review voluntarily.
