Due to an inheritance, Hannah Massey buys an apartment in Rome, once belonging to recluse Caterina Ricci. On arrival, she finds it's something of a time capsule, with many of the previous tenants' belongings still there. Intending to use it as a holiday rental, she begins clearing the flat, but there's one room she's reluctant to enter, the second bedroom, which is not only home to Caterina’s more personal possessions, but possibly the spirit of Caterina herself.

She's never been before, and is both fascinated by its grandeur and fearful of the mood there. I love this book. Read the whole thing in one evening. I'd say its one of the best books I've ever read. I highly recommend it , brings the past and future together in a spooky love story. Read it you'll enjoy it

Well!! I am almost breathless reading this book.

What a beautiful, tragic yet beautiful, tale. I should say tales as the past mingles with the present. Mingles is probably too gentle a word though!

I love finding out new things about times that have been and although vaguely aware of the Italian woes during WWII, thanks to Tea with Mussolini, I didn’t realise the fuller stories. Absolutely brilliantly shown here.

Again, excellent editing by Rumer Haven.

Haunting

Amazing book. The history alone is worth reading. Astonishing how some of the history of World War Two is glossed over or forgotten. Love how the characters are so real and the story so heart wrenching and believable. You are drawn in immediately and hooked until the end but left wanting more. Excellent job.

As with all of Shani Struthers writing, she paints just incredible pictures of the story unfolding before you. Done so with such care and respect also, given the subject matter of this book. Often heartbreaking for many reasons, I couldn’t help but feel right in the middle of the story.

Her writing has become much darker over the years which does sometimes creep into confusion. However, like all of her books so far, the ending is beautifully written and finished with a large exhale of satisfaction.

How I adore the haunted world books and this one did not disappoint at all. From seeing Rome through the eyes of Hannah to the horror and bleakness of seeing it as Caterina. I've smiled and cried reading this, lost in the beauty of Rome and felt the heartbreaking despair of what was inflicted upon the innocent in the name of war. Another masterpiece by Shani

Truly amazing

To read the current and the back story on Caterina, and how in the end she and Tom were finely together, was sweet. Hannah never gave up on figuring out how everything together and found love in the end. Another great story and can't wait for more.

Struthers has lost her touch. Two extensive back stories of woman decades apart with some predicable commonalities. No haunting atmosphere, no tension, nothing until a final ‘lightbulb-smashing-and-wailing’ showdown. Also, aiming for your reader to sympathise with a Nazi is poor taste.

Moving story

I must admit I nearly have up on this story. Not the normal ghost story I had expected from the author, but I am so glad I persevered. A moving take of romance and history. Some dark memmories, other happy and warm. Historically enthralling and a brilliant read.

Great read, I particularly like the nod to the resistance fighters of the second world war. Don't be put off by that last statement, it is set in the present with the vail between the past and present collide. A thoroughly enjoyable read, told with great skill for her craft.

Shani Struthers never ceases to surprise me. Her storytelling style and abilities seem to change from each story to the next. Resistance is no exception.
Set in the Eternal City of Rome, this is a beautifully crafted story that calls not only on the authors research on the city's history, but also of her own experiences of being there.
A supernatural tale of love and loss that also happens to be an emotional tour de force!
Highly recommended.
