Soren’s world is shattered when her father’s body is found near the border of Draestel.
The archeologist left instructions for his daughter in the event of his death. Soren is to find and destroy the artifact that he was killed for, a magical object with the power to unmake all of Entheas. As she closes in on finding answers, she is kidnapped and taken to the Mountains of Thorncrest. There, she is surprised to find that her captor is not only the dark stranger she has been dreaming about, but the killer’s son. Everything she once knew unravels around her as she discovers the reason for her imprisonment. Thrust into a world that she didn’t know existed, she finds herself growing close to the man she is supposed to hate.
Will she find a way to escape and avenge her father? Or will she fall for the Prince of Ravens?
Secrets and Songbirds is N.J. Rodman's debut Fantasy Romance Novel. It is the first of a series and includes tropes such as enemies to lovers, friends to lovers, fated mates, and forced proximity, just to name a few. It is a loose Beauty and the Beast retelling set in a world called Entheas. Secrets and Songbirds features a strong female lead battling anxiety and grief following the loss of her father. Side characters include a best friend who is trying to get over an abusive past and a lovable boy who provides comedic relief between the more serious themes throughout the book.
My name is N.J. and I am a stay at home mom to a three year old pterodactyl ... I mean daughter. Don’t let my bookish exterior fool you. I do in fact have a dark side. Though I enjoy writing about love, I also have a slight obsession with serial killers.
My pen name Amara Rose came to be when I began writing my first dark romance novel, Babydoll. Due to the extreme nature of the content I decided to separate it from my other works under N.J. Rodman. Amara gives me the space to explore my inner crazy and to really let it all out. Though I love all of my titles, I think I will always have a soft spot for the dark little demon living inside me.
So whether you enjoy pitch black MMC’s or golden retrievers, I have written something for everybody. I hope that through my writing you will experience all of the feelings that make us human. My stories aren’t for the faint of heart, but if you are willing to take an emotional trust fall with me, I promise I’ll catch you.
3.5 rounded up. The story this book tells is clever and fun and definitely got better as the story progressed. But there were things that clashed for me. They seem to live in a more mideaval time, but there are references to modern things and sayings that didn't quite fit in. Also, the description of the characters felt lacking. The book read very ya with the exception of the few short smut scenes. Overall, I think the story is great, and hopefully, the next book will be even better.
I want to start by saying that I am a hormonal pregnant woman and have been known to be harsh with my views. I also find that I'm particularly more harsh on fantasy because I've read amazing fantasy (ACOTAR, FBAA, ZA, bargainer, fourth wing etc) and become disappointed quickly when i don't fall in love with a story.. and unfortunately this has happened.
What I liked: The writing - I think this is the authors first book? I think for a debut she has done great.
The plot. It had a good premise
I love enemies to lovers and best friends who would do anything for each other
What I didn't like:
For the first 50% I kept wondering to myself if I was supposed to enjoy this story..Once we got over the 50% mark it became alot clearer but I unfortunately did not find any of the characters likeable
I felt that Soren was really immature and although I usually love a fiery FMC, I found her to he rude, juvenile and over the top and didn't love her personality.. I wish this wasn't in third person because I feel like we have missed out on the inner dialogue that really helps character development that authors want their readers to see.. but even still she had no character development anyway
I felt that the romance between the main characters was forced and came out of no where and maybe this is why it shouldn't have been third person because usually there is more depth and explanation to feelings and we didn't get this.. regardless I felt no chemistry.
This was marketed as an adult fantasy but it's very YA except with some sex scenes to make it more adult? I also wish there was more world building and that the fantasy element of the series was explored more.. as it was very basic and not described much at all.
I rarely DNF books, but I just couldn’t keep reading this one. The writing is both childish and vulgar, making it feel incoherent and unpolished. At 13% in, I still had no idea what the characters looked like or any reason to care about them. The story starts so abruptly that there’s no time to connect with anyone or feel invested.
The final straw for me was the line: “I will actually unalive both of you.” The protagonist casually calls her friend “bitch” but won’t say “kill”? The inconsistency was jarring. On top of that, the writing is filled with modern slang, yet the setting—both the town and the house—feels like something from centuries ago. The contrast was bizarre and made it impossible to take seriously.
I originally thought I could push through for a laugh, but that “unalive” line made me cringe too much. No wonder I’d never heard of this book before. I got it for free on “Stuff Your Kindle Day,” and honestly, I’m just relieved I didn’t spend any money on it.
Definitely 4.5! World building was so easy to follow, the characters were so easy to get attached to. It was nice to read each character have their own journey to go through and I cannot wait for the next!
I want to thank the author for the ARC and this review was left voluntarily, all thoughts/opinions above are my own!
4.5/5⭐️ WOAH. What was that ending?? I know it’s a duet series and yes, I’ve already started the second book… but ANYWAYS my jaw was on the FLOOR. Literal gasps were had. Based on how this book started, I did not expect to enjoy it this much or get this invested in the plot and characters (a rare double wombo combo).
This is N.J. Rodman’s debut, and I have to say—it’s an impressive one. I didn’t really connect with it right away (I’d say around the 20% mark it really picked up), but I’m so glad I stuck with it. The writing also isn’t the most polished fantasy I’ve read, but the storytelling is strong, and it totally pulled me in.
The story follows Soren, who’s spiraling after her father’s murder. She’s drowning in grief and alcohol until she discovers the instructions he left behind: destroy the Oculus before it falls into the wrong hands. Which is the reason why he’d been unalived. With the help of her two friends, Baz and Enara, she sets off on a mission to stop the coming destruction. But just when answers are within reach, she’s kidnapped by her literal dream stalker and I’ll say no more before I spoil it all.
Soren is a bit frustrating at times, but she’s growing on me. What I really loved was how the side characters weren’t just background noise—they’re essential to the story and just as developed as the protagonist. This book gives strong Beauty and the Beast retelling energy (which I LOVEEEEE), but with a fresh, fantasy-driven twist that kept me flipping pages. Also, a huge bonus, the names and world-building are easy to follow, which is a rare blessing in fantasy.
I’m already into book two because I need answers. If you’re looking for a fast-paced, character-driven fantasy with high stakes and a touch of fairytale magic, definitely check this one out. It’s also free on Kindle Unlimited just an fyi to my kindle besties.
P.S. this book took me three months bc I just took a break from reading on my kindle, which is how I read this, and I was reading other physical books.
I was graciously given this as an ARC to read and review.

Rating: 5🌟 Spice: 🌶️🌶️/5
Tropes: enemies to lovers, friends to lovers, forced proximity
Brief Summary: Loosely based on Beauty and the Beast, Secrets and Songbirds follows Soren as she grapples with the aftermath of her father’s death. Along with her best friends, Enara and Baz, she sets out on one last adventure left by her father. As time goes on, though, she discovers that everything she thought she knew isn’t quite what it seemed.
I absolutely adored this book! First of all, the chapter headings are beautiful. Getting into the actual story, this book was structured very well. It’s very easy to immediately fall in love with Soren, Enara, and Baz. The world building and overall pacing of the book are also done very well. You dive into the main plot almost immediately and there isn’t an overwhelming information dump.
I will always be a sucker for enemies to lovers. I picked up on the subtle parts indicating this being a retelling a Beauty and the Beast retelling, but a few scenes were obviously from the movie (the snowball fight, him showing her an expansive library).
Rook is a classic dark-haired love interest with a tragic backstory and I eat it up EVERY SINGLE TIME. As the son of the villain, I’m looking forward to getting more page time with him and diving more into his story.
OH MY GOSH THAT ENDING. When I saw I only had 25 pages left, I knew that everything was about to go wrong, and boy was I right. This book ends on a major cliffhanger that just left me going “what the heck just happened??” This book will definitely rank high on my favorite books for the year, and I cannot wait for the next book to be released.
The Oculus duet was my first encounter with N. J. Rodman, and it didn't disappoint. The story revolves around Soren, the daughter of an archeologist, set on a quest to find and protect a missing artifact. She is accompanied by two of her closest friends, and I really loved how the author weaved her story around them as well; they weren't there just to fill the plot; they were part of the plot.
The quest will open more questions, show them that not everything is as it seems, and put them into dangerous situations. Soren will come face to face with someone she feels is her enemy and responsible for her father's death, but again, there is more than meets the eye.
Secrets and Songbirds, Book 1 in The Oculus duet, starts a bit slower than I expected, and it reads more YA than NA in the beginning, but as we go on, it gets more complex, deeper, and more intriguing, and it really pulls you in. With tropes such as enemies-to-lovers, friends-to-lovers, fated mates, forced proximity, and hidden identities, you are bound to be immersed in the world created by N. J. Rodman.
I was given this book as an ARC and all views are my own.
I don’t know how I feel about this book and I am conflicted. I liked the characters and the world NJ Rodman has created. I just feel like it was a bit rushed. The scenes where we learn about characters back stories I just wanted more. I wanted more conflict to drive the plot, and maybe a bit more slow burn.
I do have to say Baz and Enora were done well and I liked their character arcs.
I also struggled with some of the language used and found it a bit jarring and with it mixing modern terms into a somewhat medieval setting.
The book ends on a cliff hanger but it is so final I don’t even know what book two would entail.
I have rated this ⭐️⭐️⭐️ and 🌶️ and will wait to see what book two entails before I commit to reading.
How to make a review without spoilers when you're so excited!
Secrets of songbirds is NJ Rodman's debut and she didn’t disappoint us!
We follow Soren, Enara and Baz who are going on the adventure after Soren father was killed. He has left Soren with various clues and asks her to make sure that what he has always protected remains safe. Loved the friendship between the 3 friends.
The story was very easy to follow as was the world building. The characters had a nice story of their own and everything was discussed in detail.
NJ Rodman really had take her time to describe everything well and she absolutely didn’t rush the story. It ended with 2 big cliffhangers that make you look forward to the next story! A wonderful adventurous slowburn that makes you look forward to more!
A big thank you to NJ Rodman who provided me this ARC in change for a honest review
Okay, where to start!? Firstly, please read this book!
Secondly, and most importantly, please read this book!
On a serious note, I devoured this book. The book as a whole (story, settings, characters, etc) had me hooked and feeling SO many feelings.
There were moments I wanted to cry, moments I laughed & moments I definitely blushed (little bird).
The FMC is a sarcastic badass and I am here for it! The backstories the author has for all the main characters is incredible. It made them so interesting and to some people probably relatable.
There is so much happening, it’s fast paced, full of incredible detail & I seriously didn’t want to put it down and I didn’t want it to end!
I won’t say too much more (even though I have LOTS to say) to avoid spoilers so I will do another review once this book is released but I already cannot wait for the next book and read the continuation of the story and see where all the main characters end up!
Bruh. Genuinely wtf did I just read. The first 30% of this book I don’t even remember but I’m pretty sure it was just her and her friends running around doing whatever. Then the next 30% I had no idea what was happening, and then finally at 60% ish we find out the books been GOING BACK IN TIME every other chapter??? Maybe I missed it at the beginning but all of a sudden the whole thing made more sense cause I definitely did not catch on to that.
We didn’t even meet the supposed guy-who-kidnaps-her until like 7 chapters left, I was led to believe it was the main villain??? Not a newly introduced character at 3/4 through the book?
Then after about 95% of the book (literally like chapter 23/25) FMC goes from ‘I couldn’t hate a person more than I hate this man’ to ‘let’s bang’ after mans is semi-nice to her one time.
And then we get a major cliffhanger two chapters from the end, then FMC finds out MMC killed her dad but it’s “not like that”, and then she maybe sort of dies in the last chapter? Then we get a vague epilogue from MMC to top it all off, and no questions are answered whatsoever.
There really was just way too much detail for how many pages it was, it didn’t make sense and things got brushed over too quickly. Maybe one day when I’m bored I’ll find out what happened in book 2 but I have absolutely no desire to read it right now.
Thank you N.J. for sending me an arc copy of your novel!
Most times when I’m reading a fantasy novel, I have no idea what is going on until the end of the story. With “Secrets and Songbirds” it was so easy to follow along, such an easy read.
I did find the first half a little slow for me, and was confused about the “Beauty & the Beast” retelling until it hit that halfway mark, then it came all together and I literally could not put my kindle down!
The characters were so likeable! Loved the relationships they had (hello Baz & Enara 👋🏻). I’m also a sucker for villain/bad boy vibes, I couldn’t get enough of Rook! 😍
I found I did struggle with some of the dialogue and I really didn’t like Sorin’s character.
I cannot wait to see how the story ends, especially with that cliffhanger!
I would like to thank N.J Rodman for my copy of her ARC. Due to this kind gesture I have decided to leave an honest review.
Ok, I’m really stuck on my rating. The first half of the book was very YA and the characters are so juvenile. Once I crossed that 50% mark though, SHEEESSSHHH! I blew through it in no time. I’m going to sit at a nice and comfortable 3.5.
Can I just say for an authors first book this is pretty great! But I did struggle with the first half of the book. I find Soren to be extremely childish and her actions to be really cringe. I must admit though, it will give her character a chance to grow, and while you start to see the small changes, she seems to throw herself back into her childish ways which I hope to see a lot more progress in the second instalment.
It’s actually a really good story, I won’t lie. It has good plot, good growth and when the characters stop sounding really young in the head (again around the 50% mark) you start to get a little fond of them.
The world building is not that bad, I don’t know if they are medieval or not though? I get why the celestials will be modern but sometimes in the human world you can’t tell.
All in all, solid first book! I really did start to enjoy it when it picked up the pace, but do be warned it’s a cliffhanger. I actually look forward to seeing where the story goes so hopefully it doesn’t take forever for it to be out.
I would give this book 🌶️🌶️ on the spice scale, there’s only 2-3 sections it goes into any actual detail of what takes place 👀 It’s almost like a balanced mix between YA and adult which I actually really liked. This book is set in 3rd person POV which caused the reader to feel a bit disconnected from the characters, which really sucks, because I wanted to be more connected to them. Also, the way the author wrote was almost rushed in some areas which created some confusion for the reader. I believe the author could really create an entire franchise out of this series - have an entire book just for the prologue and then an entire series of books with 1st POV on each character and how they perceived what took place especially because the plot/premise is so good. I could have used a bit more world building and background information, as well as more physical details for the character development. Some parts of this book were skimmed over by the author and I would have really liked more detail, especially concerning Rook and Soren’s relationship - the slow burn is there, but barely. All in all, I really liked this story and am excited to get into the next book. If the author ever wants to rewrite this story and make it more thorough, I would be very interested in reading them again.
After the death of her father, Soren and her two best friends set out on a quest to keep a powerful artefact out of the wrong hands. Only they didn’t expect to be going toe to toe with the gods.
I really enjoyed this book! It starts with some solid world building and characters that are mostly likeable- the female main character is a bit irksome at times but I can get past that! I think it’s paced well, and while it does read young it is not for teens as it has some pretty smutty scenes.
Rodman sets themself up well for continuing the series, although leaving the book on that big of a cliffhanger - for some characters, quite literally- feels cruel.
I read 105 pages and I still wasn't into it. The writing simply wasn't working for me. I was kept too much at a distance and the book never allowed me to really build a connection with the characters. I read what they were doing and how they were feeling, but I never really was there with them, I never really felt what they were feeling. I tried to look at the book as more of an epic fantasy, those books have the same issue for me, but since I have almost a 1000 other books I'd rather spend my time on, I decided to simply not finish the book.
I read 'Secrets and Songbirds' by N.J. Rodman in a day, which says something. It took me a little while to really get into the book, but once it picked up, I was hooked.
For me, the story would have resonated even more if it were told from a first-person perspective, providing a richer understanding of the characters' thoughts and feelings. However, the plot is compelling enough to keep you engaged.
The ending definitely left me wanting more, and I'm looking forward to picking up the second book.
I really struggled with reading and comprehending the writing style for the first half of the book, it was challenging to follow however it progressively improved as the story went on. The first 90% of the book I'd rate at 3 stars, however the last 10% was definitely 5 stars!!! The story ended on a bit of a cliffhanger, but with how well the story improved I'm excited to read on to finish the next book in the series!
I truly can not finish this book. The setting is medieval (I think), the language is modern (I think) and it all flows really poorly. I know a fantasy setting could mean ANYTHING could happen, but I like stories that are consistent in the background details so the story makes sense. The setting and what is happening has to match or we're looking at someone's attempt at a fun roleplay and not an actual story. I am so sorry I am DNFing this duology.
I was graciously given an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review. Thank you N.J. Rodman!
This book was so great. The magic system was easy to follow and understand. I loved every character in this book and would look forward to learning more from each one. And the cliffhanger! 😱 What the heck happened?! I need the second book because I need to know. Definitely recommend this book to anyone! ❤️
Great world building & well described characters. This book is a page turner, that keep you wanting to read more. Each character has its own captivating story, full of struggles & romance. I can’t wait to know how it’ll end.
I don’t know where to start, tbh. It was so so slow but so fast? The story speed gave me whiplash at times. But its also so frustratingly good and not so good at the same time. I loved and didnt love this book. I loved the story and the idea of everything and i mean even the characters although there never felt like there was anything bad. And i loved the cliff hanger as much as it pissed me off. But then some of the writing and the development or lack of detail just kinda derailed me from reading, part of what took me so long. Idk im wishy washy on this but I am some what intrigued by the next book.
Edit: editing my review because somehow when I read this, I forgot that it was INTENTIONALLY a Beauty and the Beast retelling and now I feel really silly <3
I received this book as an eARC from the author. All thoughts are my own.
Overall, I enjoyed the book! I think the author is a talented writer and clearly knows her stuff when it comes to imagery and technical execution which is really impressive, especially as a debut author!
The last 50% of the book is where it becomes clear that this is a Beauty and the Beast retelling, snowball fight and all.
I did love the main character and the banter between Soren and Rook (also the character names get an A+ - they fit the world perfectly!). I would have loved to feel a bit more emotion from Enara and Baz. They often said they were worried about Soren, but I wish there had been more to convince me that they were worried about their recently kidnapped friend, especially since the author is clearly skilled at descriptive imagery!
The ending confused me, but I’m assuming it’ll be cleared up by any future books the author has planned!
Once again, I enjoyed the plot, and the author is a great writer. I look forward to seeing how her experience with her debut novel transfers into an even better sequel. :)
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
I enjoyed this book so much! It's very loosely based on Beauty and the Beast, which is one of my all time favourite stories 🥺
Secrets and Songbirds is a very well executed enemies to lovers. Great and easy to follow world-building (always a plus!). From the very first pages I found myself rooting for the FMC, Soren, and her loyal friends. They're a likeable and relatable bunch.
Secrets and Songbirds is definitely one of those books that takes over your life and keeps you on the edge of your seat until you finish it. And even then you're not completely done with it because you keep wondering what will happen next...
I am impatiently waiting for the next book 👀😌 This author is definitely one to watch!
I received an ARC copy of this book and I'm leaving this review voluntarily.
I'm actually sick of bad writing. Now, the plot had potential. This could've been a good book. But the fmc was absolutely the worst. And the mmc had only daddy issues and self-loathing. The side characters were okay. Overall this is terrible and please don't read it.
