I liked 2 out of 3 of these. I feel like they give you a taste of the series without you feeling lost and not understanding things if you haven't read the rest of the series. Except for the last one. I don't know if that series just isn't for me or if I didn't like the characters or if it just isn't a standalone story, but I forced myself to read part of it, telling myself how much I liked the other books. Then I just couldn't anymore. But the first 2 were fun and I liked trying to figure out whodunit.
