Alexander North is just a second lieutenant in the Terran Empire’s military until the apocalypse spreads throughout the universe on the back of an endless blizzard and everything begins to change.
No longer can people use guns; no longer can they use electricity; and no longer can they use fire. But the worst of it all are the radiation filled shards flying through the storm that mutate any creature they enter, turning them into mindless monsters whose natural instinct is to kill. How will Alex cope with his newfound changes as the only infected soldier in his base to not fully turn into a monster? Will he die to the other monsters? To the soldiers? Or will he thrive?
Shane Purdy is a college graduate with a Bachelors in Computer Science. At a young age he became fascinated with Fantasy books after reading the Wereworld series by Curtis Jobling, which led to a love of reading that continues to this day.
When he was younger you could almost always find him with a book in his hand (when he wasn’t busy with Band activities that is). As he got older, he started reading online webnovels as well. In June of 2021, after reading thousands of books, he decided to take the plunge and write a book of his own, starting with his first series, Dungeon from the Void.
He writes both high and low progression fantasy novels of varying genres, including Dungeon Core, LitRPG, Cultivation, Sci-Fi and more.
He does not use any sort of social media for his books other than Reddit, he has no Facebook pages, and his Facebook account is private and not public. Therefore if anyone finds public Facebook or other social media accounts outside of Reddit or Discord claiming to be him, they are fake.
Purdy's books generally have a quick set up but this one is just weak.
The concepts are very similar to Winter Wolf taking away any originality it might have had. The set up is weak and stretches credulity to its breaking point. The take on technology is very situational and used like plot armor. This comes off less like a planned out story and more a forced idea with poorly thought details.
So I very definitely get the feeling that this author is fascinated with ice powers, but I loved that this world is nothing like his other worlds, or characters.
Alex was very interesting in having a completely bizarre fluke of a circumstance that ended up being useful during a frozen apocalypse. Will the fact that he has both Sun and Cold affinities mean that both sides will want him out of the picture? Or was he designed and placed by one of the Powers to be something new in this war?
I tried so hard to like this book. 58% is what I made through in the book. This book focuses more on the sci-fi and military style applications than the LIT aspects.
I am sure many people will love it. Just wasn't for me.
3.5 stars, rounded up. Good, but not really outstanding. It's a sufficiently interesting setup, but where it goes from here will determine if this is worth investing more time in or not. There are some mechanisms here which are not well explained, but I'll give that the benefit of the doubt for now.
It starts well with a future sci-fi world that turns into a ice magic apocalypse. Some of the effects like fire and electricity not working mostly gets glazed over with the "hey its magic" reasoning when some electronics keep working. With that I really enjoyed the first 45% of the book. There was world building with both the sci-fi and magic coming together in new and exciting ways. Then around that 45% mark inconsistencies start snowballing until I gave up at 67% where it felt like the aurther just gave up on the world building they had done and just winged it having thing act in whatever way fit there fancy. Regardless of any and everything beforehand.
I really tried to give this book a chance. But I just can’t finish this thing (got to 30%). It’s just a little too silly for me, and not ha ha silly, but wow that’s a not great idea silly. The space blizzard, in particular, is what keeps tripping me up: knocks me out of disbelief suspension.
Shane Purdy has a thing for winter. I mean seriously. Not as good as his other books. I guess the world building was good. But the premise of the book not so much.
An eternal battle erupts again, but humans have forgotten this enemy
Alexander North is a 2nd Lieutenant who just happens to be the son of the General of the Army on this world. Life is a bit different as humans have embraced symbiotes that grant them increased strength, endurance, presence and even intelligence in some ways but it’s a trade off as the symbiotes have their own instincts. But this is a minor note in this story as a super cold storm hits the universe from a planet known for its cold Coccytus, which is more a vacation spot for some. Little does anyone know the being known as Coccytus had awakened and reignited the war against his nemesis the Sun. All living creatures may be infected with this frozen energy that mutates them into creatures obedient to the intelligent frozen one leaders and provides a near instant army. Alex meanwhile just wants to survive and save everyone he can at first, until one of the flying shards hits hit and he begins to change into a frozen one as well. Oddly though, the change never finishes as Alex has a revolutionary 100% artificial heart that somehow protects him from the second half of the process and he doesn’t lose his intelligence, nor his mind. Well until he’s almost out of this strange energy, when his baser instincts take over until he regains enough energy. What a strange time it will be as this Eternal Winter consumes the universe, killing or converting every living creature it can. Alex must survive not only his body changing but the hate and prejudice his new appearance powers bring from the other humans as not all of them will accept him not being human anymore, which is apparent from his changed looks, tolerance for cold, increased speed and strength, retractable claws, but mostly his newly blackened eyes with blue circles… yeah the eyes seem to freak them out the most.
Well this author came up with a different take on LitRPG which in my opinion works great. Excellent MC, and some of the supporting characters. There are a LOT of supporting characters to keep track of. One negative thing I noticed were some minor inconsistencies concerning Alex's weapons early in the book. Sometimes he would lose them and in the next fight he had them again. It was a little distracting, but minor. Overall I would highly recommend this novel.
This was a really good book. The only reason I gave it four stars was because of the whole Alex not having a pulse because of his artificial heart. It never explained how that was possible. And it was never mentioned at any point about any others with an artificial heart being found. Because, there is no way,in the last five years after Alex got an artificial heart that works, there would be others that also got one. They are, after all, the only people that relatively safe from completely turning, unlike the rest of humanity.
YOU SEEMINGLY FELL IN LOVE WITH THIS PHRASE " I COULDN'T HELP BUT ". IT WAS OVERLY USED IN THIS NOVEL, IN MY OPINION. IT LEAD TO SEVERAL ACTIONS. I COULDN'T HELP BUT FEEL THIS OR I COULDN'T HELP BUT DO THAT. ALL THROUGHOUT THE NOVEL IT WAS THE SAME THING. IT REALLY BECAME QUITE ANNOYING AS ITS USE CONTINUED TO MOUNT. I ALWAYS THOUGHT MOST AUTHORS HAD A MORE DIVERSE VOCABULARY. I GUESS I WAS WRONG! OVERALL, THE NOVEL WAS ENTERTAINING! CONGRATS!
As expected from this author, a very entertaining read. My only criticism is that this book has a larger number of grammatical errors than I have seen in his work to date. I can only assume that the error-checking process was rushed since normally there aren't so many glaring errors in Shane's work. I do look forward to this series continuing on. Lord knows I hate cliffhangers! (Shame on you Shane ;P)
The author I have read a couple series.. He's very good at creating worlds... Somewhat light on emotional depth of characters but very skilled at plot and world creation.... So if you want action oriented light read... Highly recommend JD Glasscock Author of the Series Blood Brothers and the Dream
This is cool, an apocalypse sci fi set in an alternative future, maybe.
Good story, well thought out, pretty good pacing. However, some inconsistencies with when the main character is armed, one moment he is without swords and knives, then he has them in conflict, then he doesn't a chapter later. Just needs some review and tightening, but a very enjoyable read otherwise.
The concept and execution are both a bit ridiculous even if it's a fun read. The main issue is the MC who starts off as a tough intelligent military officer but who descends into a childish youth.
Plot holes galore. Ridiculous situations created for no obvious reason whatsoever. Overall a very average YA book.
Alexander's world is interesting as some people have symbionts, either due to power or earning them via military service, etc. Then, winter starts invading the universe with cold and causing almost all electronic technology to fail.
Interesting plot and a well enough opening for a new series. No complaints. I just hope the Author can juggle all these new series he's planning on starting and can maintain the standards set by his current ones.
Honestly a very different take on game lit. I really like the fact that it is taking place in a space opera. Reminds me a lot of some of the space operas like lensman.
As always Shane has a great Imagination but needs some writing help. His writing is a bit stilted as if written by an AI which might offput some readers but if you can get past that then the story is quite entertaining.
Wasn't sure at first yet, but this turned into a very good story. There is a lot of world building, but still, the story moves along at a decent pace. Yes, the MC is overpowered but he has to work up to it.
All in all it was a fun book, can't wait on book 2.
Well paced, and an easy read. Enjoyed how the characters interactions felt natural and normal. Futuristic setting was easily understood while still feeling science fiction.
Like the book but not fan of leaving story hanging. Otherwise was very good read. Would recommend this one. Hopefully no more cliffhangers in the future.
DNF @ 25%. The story concept is interesting, but while not awful, the prose is in need of an editor (“recked” instead of “wrecked”, “hurried quickly”, awkward phrasing, etc.).
I enjoyed reading this book and I recommend this book to anyone who like LitRPG and progression type of books with lots of action. Editing was not well done! Many errors.
