Sister Wendy Beckett was a South African-born British art expert, Roman Catholic nun, and contemplative hermit who became an unlikely celebrity during the 1990s, presenting a series of acclaimed art history documentaries for the BBC.
having watched sister wendy on tv last night (christmas day 2012) I fond this little time on our shelves. there is a disconnect here since her views of chastity go beyond simply celibacy (go on, look 'em up), and yet her thoughts on love encompassing respect, reverence, choice, repentance, obsession, attention are a distillation of what love can be and should be. true eros is always tempered with philo and most importantly agape.
Sister Wendy writes about various aspects of love, using paintings as a springboard. Some of the paintings seemed odd choices. Especially affecting were the essay on Christian unconditional love, and an essay on Gainesborough's daughters and love despite flaws, an an Impressionist painter's wife bathing in which he never sees her as aging.
