This is a moving and engaging account of Bill’s perspectives as a lung cancer patient and clinical trial participant. Bill weaves his personal experiences together with a dramatic story of breakthrough targeted treatments for patients with terminal lung cancer. Bill’s account brings hope, inspiration, and important life lessons for patients, caregivers, doctors, other providers, and anyone working in the healthcare or life science industry.
DR. ALICE SHAW, M.D., Ph.D. Attending Physician in Center of Thoracic Cancers at Mass General Brigham Hospital
Only one who has heard those crushing words, “You have six months to two years to live!” can understand its devastating impact on one’s psychic.
For Bill, all travel plans were put on the proverbial “back burner” and sadly thrown into the trash—two years of hellacious chemo seemly nothing short of poison recked havoc throughout his body.
While lying on his sofa, too weak to climb the stairsteps to his bedroom, a voice from a lovely young lady on his T.V. quietly proclaimed; I have adenocarcinoma non-small cell lung cancer, and it’s melting away.
This led to a conversation with Dr. Alice Shaw and a chance for life. With the introduction to the wonderful world of ALK drugs, he now follows his dreams of world travel while “Living with Terminal Lung Cancer.”
The urge to see this big beautiful planet has returned as strong as ever as he calls to Connie, “Pack the bags!” Travel they have! All seven continents, including all 63 of our fantastic National Parks (including Pago Pago N.P.).
This book gets 5 stars not just because Bill Schuette is my neighbor, but also because reading his story is just like standing out in the yard chatting (for a really, really long time lol). I knew some of Bill's story but this in-depth account of his journey (pun intended) is eye opening. I've admired the Schuette's for years- their love of life & travel is inspirational. How much more so now! If you're looking for a technical report or a literary manuscript, this isn't the right choice. But if you want to walk in the shoes of an ordinary guy living an extraordinary life despite having stage IV lung cancer, you won't be disappointed.
This is very motivating for anyone diagnosed with lung cancer. He has the ALK positive mutation which is rare but he was able to be a pioneer clinical trials participant for three of the target drugs now approved by the FDA. He was always hopeful during all the ups and downs. I have suffered through many of the same situations. He gives me hope and I am so glad he shared his story. I am the same age with the same diagnosis for 2 years and on my first target drug hoping it does me as well. It is not easy but it will not define us.
Loved to hear the writers personal story of living with cancer along with the ups and downs. Gives me perspective of what those diagnosed are going through along with tremendous amount of gratitude for being the pin cushion and lab bunny to provide a better and extended life for others.
