From the author of the Welcome to Satanville series comes a short story that is not for the squeamish Billions of years ago, before the galaxies, there was only them. some call them gods. others call them demons. Mr. Stevens will come to call them his tormentors. over his next several reincarnations, Mr. Stevens will answer the only question that matters, how much can one soul take? confessions is the result of his first life, that of a local farmer with a dark and twisted habit. ***Trigger warning***
If you have any issues with the following subjects, this book may not be for you. -Murder -Cannibalism -Necrophilia -Dismemberment
Ancient beings have chosen a mortal soul to experiment on and it starts with a gentleman arrested for the death of a one man. But this takes them down a path they didn't expect.
TW: Cannibalism, necrophilism
Boy, Mr. Stevens is a predatory fellow, taking advantage of people he believes will not be missed. He's cold-hearted, brutal, and not only uses his position to inflict horror but finds a way to use it to make money. The premise for this is interesting, I wanted to find out how the four different beings played into this soul's life.
Unfortunately though, the concept isn't really explored. Nor are the other concepts. The short story doesn't really feel like a short story. It reads like we were dropped into the beginning of the book and got a couple of chapters but no conclusion. It was explained that this is being used to introduce a serial killer series, which is intriguing but even as an introduction, there should be some resolution to the short story.
I was left with questions, like why were the ancient beings introduced when the story could have rolled out without them at all? Why did the killer confess to anything without even remotely being asked? I have more but I feel like they're spoiler questions and I don't want to detract from the readers.
I think that the idea of a larger series suits this tale. There's just too much of an introduction feel to this. I wouldn't mind reading more about the idea of these entities and what the ultimate result is.
As a short story read, I found it very frustrating. But as the first few chapters of a larger story, it would work and I'd like to read the rest of it.
This was a quick read and well done at that. And the sneak peek at the end.....I am thoroughly excited for Mason's Jars to be released! However that's neither here nor there. What if everything you thought you knew about the universe's creation was a flat out lie? What if all we're all just space fillers and really only one person matters? Now what if you got to hear the confessions of the only person who mattered in all of this chaotic world....would you want to? Could you? Don't be shy take a chance and find out for yourself. This was another brilliantly written book by Jimi Peranteau (check out Satanville if you need further proof)... I will say though I think Jimi realllllly has a thing for legs....if you know you know!
Quick, disturbing read that will make you never want to buy food from a flea market. Favourite line: “How much can one soul endure before it’s very sanity is stripped away”
The book also includes the set up for a serial killer novel which is super intriguing and I definitely want to continue reading.
