This book started out good but it gradually devolved into a convoluted mess; even though volume 14 is my first foray into this franchise I believe every sequel should be able to stand on its own and be treated like the first and last entry in the series. I liked how even though each issue appeared to be drawn by a different artist it didn't really screw up the continuity; the art style of the first story was my personal favorite. Issue #88 - Cover B is so adorably drawn that it's hard to take The Dark Queen seriously as a threatening villain. This book appears to un-ironically make reference to actually sitting down and watching 2 Broke Girls, and I gotta say, if nothing else, that was extremely memorable because of how out of left field that was; maybe I'll actually sit down one day and give that show my full, undivided attention and maybe I'll actually like it. Even though I gave this book three stars I will probably read and buy more if and when I find more in the wild. I'm seriously confused by the ending of the first story though, was that girl r*ped, was she murdered, was she turned into a carpet, was she turned into a sex slave or was she all of the above-ed? Cost: -$8 Tier list: C
I had always heard great things about this series but had never actually read one until now, so forgive me if I am a little ignorant to events that have happened earlier. But that aside I liked this issue. The big thing with these issues is the more adult theme, but I found that the sexuality portrayed in the artwork is done in a responsible manner. Each female character is drawn sexually, but not without purpose. Each time the story embraced a more sensual feel, that feel had a reason and a purpose, and wasn't just thrown out there for sensationalism's sake.
But on to the stories. This issue covers six stories, two of which are two-parters. The first story is the classic Seal Skin tale that tells the story of a kind of hunter of women of the sea. The second is my favorite of the issue and retells the Jack Frost story. The third is Phoenix Rising and is a great action packed story. The forth is The Dark Queen. Each story has that appeal that only this series can do, and each story is heavily based on the classic tales that preceded them.
The artwork in each issue is bold and colorful. The dialogue is pretty good, and the storytelling is fun to read. The only problem I had with the issue is with the first tale that was a little disconnected from what I remember of the original tale. For me the first story didn't feel like the old tale until the very end. But that aside the book was pretty good and quite fun to read.
Not sure if I'll read further issues, as they don't exactly fit into my reading genre, but I don't regret reading this issue in any way.
*I received this issue in exchange for an honest review.
This collects issues 82-84 and 86-87 from the comic Grimm Fairy Tales. It continues a storyline that has to do with Sela and Melena and has a twist to it.
The second story has to do with Sela being summoned to a school that has had a bullying death. The school's Lacrosse team seem to be involved and Sela soon finds herself toe to toe with Jack Frost.
The book finishes with the Dark Horde and their attempts to resurrect the Dark Queen. The art in this segment is pretty gruesome, unlike the good girl art in the rest of the book. The volume concludes with a cover gallery of pin-ups, er, alternate covers.
It is volume 14, so that should be a tip off that this might not be the place to start. New readers to the series should start elsewhere as the first story is a continuation and the last story arc is left on a bit of a cliffhanger. The art falls into the "good girl" school, so women are beautiful and scantily clad throughout the book. There are also beautiful men, but they stay clothed for the most part. The cover should be a tip off to what you are in for with this series.
I was given a review copy of this graphic novel by Diamond Book Distributors and Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. thank you for letting me review this graphic novel.
Grimm's Fairy Tales Volume 14 combines several interesting stories with decent if predictably hyper-sexualized art. This is my first experience with the series so I am not solid on the back-story but it appears that a number of people are looking individuals who are manifesting powers (sort of like Professor Xavier searched for mutants I suppose). The four stories included all deal with people with powers and the efforts taken to identify and protect these folks from their own powers and in some ways the temptation to abuse them.
I had not heard of this series but being a fairy tale fanatic I was eager to read this .Despite the fact that there is extensive T& A I really loved the dark twists on familiar fairy tales. the stories are well executed and compelling to read. I am interested enough to pick up the other issues in the series.
This volume carries forward the Sela storyline and intersects that with the Dark One storyline. We finally get to see what he and the Dark Horde are up to with the return of the Dark Queen setting the stage for further stories.
