Just when we are warming up to “mindfulness”, here is a new jargon: Supermindfulness. But look beyond the jargon and the fancy terminology in the book, and you will find elements—both cerebral and playful—that can help with shifting your perspectives.

In Supermindful: 52 Ways to Connect with Your Genius, Eliza Lay Ryan talks about how to navigate through a “VUCA” world: Volatile, Uncertain, Complex, and Ambiguous. We certainly live in a world where we are forced to deal with unforeseen complexities and make more decisions than we would like to or ever had to. Although we are social beings, we are pushed to be individualistic. So, how do we cope with all this? Eliza Lay Ryan says that Supermindfulness is the answer.

The author defines the term as the ability to be present in a moment as it is, as we are, while also being able to see that moment in new ways—to mine it for more possibilities. As I understand, she has added another layer to mindfulness, which usually focuses on being present, with the idea of “possibilities”. Any why, the exploration of possibilities? Because it’s the way to put yourself in others’ shoes, to understand your fears and anxieties, look at them with a different lens, explore your biases, and so on. Because if we remain static and fixated on what we think is right, if we always position ourselves as the “good guy”, we’ll find it overwhelming to navigate this VUCA world.

So, how do we achieve this? How do we shift our perspectives? How do we explore the alternate possibilities? Here, she brings in her experience of teaching acting with the concept of imaginary immersion. In simple words, role play. The book is split into two parts: in the first half, we are introduced to supermindfulness and its benefits, and in the second, we are handed 52 techniques to practice both “presence” and “possibilities”.

For instance, a presence practice would be something like: “Today, from time to time, become present to the why of what you are doing.”
