A wealthy Irish girl rescuing children in India? An English maid preaching the gospel in China? An American pilot serving missionaries in Ecuador? Christian Heroes: Then & Now chronicles the exciting, challenging, and deeply touching true stories of ordinary men and women whose trust in God accomplished extraordinary exploits for His kingdom and glory.

Wow! What a testimony and what an adventure! So many things happen in the story that I got tired reading it. Alward's testimony and faith are inspiring and encouraging. Her God was big and he kept her strong and faithful. I would recommend this as a biography and also a great adventure.
After the first few chapters, things really picked up and the book became hard to put down. Before reading it, I'd never heard of Gladys Aylward and only sought out the book upon the recommendation of a homeschool curriculum. Wow, she was quite a lady! Her life was full of scary adventures which she endured with faith and extreme courage. Because of her obedience to God and a burning desire to reach the Chinese people, she accomplished more than I'd ever imagined one person could.
This book offers more than an epic tale of a Christian hero- it also provides a rich history lesson on how the Chinese Communist Party came to power and it was GRUESOME. As a former EFL teacher for Chinese students, I found this part of the book particularly gut-wrenching. It really put into perspective current events.
I highly recommend this book if you are Christian, if you like stories full of action and adventure, and/or you want to learn more about wars happening in the east in the 20th century. This has been the second book of the "Christian Heroes: Then and Now" series that I've read (the first being Corrie ten Boom) and I'm excited to read more of it!
I have read these through twice to my children and we enjoyed them so much. Beautiful stories full of adventure, courage, love and faith. These stories are etched on my heart.
Her story kept me on the edge of my seat the whole time! God called her to a life a true bravery. I think about her story almost daily- she was truly amazing
My favorite movie of all time is The Inn of the Sixth Happiness, which is loosely based on the life of Gladys Aylward (I didn't realize how loosely until I read this book). The movie version of her was always an inspiration to me and I think it did capture her spirit and dedication to the calling she felt to serve the people of China. Many of the most harrowing adventures in her real life were not covered in the movie and some of the ones in the movie were a twist on her actual life. Still, it was nice to read this very basic explanation of all that she did and her great service to others.
This was an incredible story of a young girl who wanted to be a missionary in China. She went thru so many difficult things and made such a huge impact. It was amazing that she bared it all and had such a huge and last impact for the whole world. She was the mustard seed and God used her to make miraculous things happen. Everyone she came into contact with was better for having met and known her. The determination and courage she showed and how she trusted God so completely is awe inspiring.

We love these books from the YWAM series-me, just as much as my kids. Such great examples of where faith in God may take you, and how we are called to suffer for Christ's sake...so much to be thankful for, and yet a call to support those who do their mission work in areas that so desperately need the gospel.
I read this out loud to Tanner during home-school. The story of Gladys Aylward is amazing. I hope to read a non-juvinal version of the book at some point.
it was a good book. very inspiring and full of action and faith on aylward's part. great read for pre-teens especially those who are Christian or looking into the missionary field.
