Well since I enjoyed book 1 of this series Burning (Brotherhood of the Blade Trilogy #1) I grabbed this second book the day it came out and finally got around to reading it today.

It has a bit of everything you usually want from a book, the hero (humble and heroic all at once) , the heroine (strong and soft all at once), the tragedy to motivate the characters and emotionally grab the reader and let us not forget the "big evil thing". Then you throw in some romance and poof, you got the great book that Afterglow was for me.

Rand has finally got a hint of where to find one of 3 vampires he needs to kill, the story to get to that point is great, the lady on the train was a nice touch (you got to read it to understand). The romance was a good way to soften the book a bit BUT I hate endings like this. It is and is not a cliffhanger since the main thrust of this book was accomplished but to leave us like that was evil :)

I guess I will just have to wait like everyone else and grab book #3 soon as it comes out. 5 Stars even though I want to hit something about now LOL

With phrases like "my man's heart was alive" and "it was time [to claim our love]," the 'romance' of this book was cringe-worthy. I'm glad most of the plot was focused on the vampire hunting and even a werewolf fight. But the scenes flew by and I felt confused. Granted, I didn't read the first book so I knew I wouldn't know everything, but the backstory was woven in well enough that that wasn't where most of my confusion was. It just fell flat for me.

Ok

The story was good. I didn't like the voice. At first I thought the voice was feminine, then I really it was Rand. The attitude was not make it was wrong.

This book takes Rand into the fortress of the Brotherhood of the Blade. He finds there is also a Sisterhood of the Scythe, comprised of the women vampire hunters who use a unique weapon fashioned into a piece of jewelry that becomes a scythe. He meets and teams up with Ambra, an ex-Olympic skier and mighty warrior.

There are too many twists and turns in this book to list them all. However, there is a guest appearance by Samantha Moon, a good vampire who works with the Brotherhood. She comes to help test a vampire trap - only with safety measures in place for the test. During her stay she convinces the group that there are such things as good vampires and shouldn't be killed off indiscriminately.

Rand comes to see the value of her words as he grows in skill and aptitude for the training. He also comes to discover that even though he loved his wife dearly and is heart broken over her death by vampires, his heart is not dead as he thought. He and Ambra discover a blossoming closeness, made even stronger by the losses they each have suffered.

This book picked up the story begun in Burning only minutes after that first book in the series ends. The novella length story then follows three plot lines, Gabby, Vlad and Rand’s relationship with Ambra. Also, the search for Rand’s daughter, Kristen, continues as an undercurrent to the three major events.

This book felt like the typical middle book in a trilogy – basically plodding along, ending a few things begun earlier, advancing some others, starting some things anew. And yes, there is a cliffhanger ending. Often the dialog, as well as Rand’s internal monologues, felt stilted and unnatural. Also, the actual novella occupied only 80% of the actual download, according to the Kindle location counter. The remaining 20% was used by previews of two other books currently in publication by the author.

In summary, the first book in the trilogy was far better than this one and I sincerely hope the next, Radiance, will return to that level.

Sharp and well written Just as the word Afterglow has many definitions (and all of them fit this story), this book has a lot of levels. It is a little bit fantasy, a little bit science, a little bit romance and a whole lot of story. Building on the story line started in the first Brotherhood of the Blade book, this book takes the characters deeper. There are vampires, werewolves, and humans all working to bring down Vlad the Impaler from the Swiss Alps to Transylvania. You will enjoy the trip

I enjoyed this book much better than the original.. I guess having more action did it for me. I've got to say tho, Rand whines like a woman. Maybe not whines... but he analyzes everything. I feel as though he is more feminine than he should be as a vampire Hunter.

This book is terrible. Not even sure I can finish it, and that's against my religion. The story lines are all over the place. There is no follow through on any of them. Just BAM , that scene is over. No depth of characters. I am not sure I have ever disliked a book more. No wonder it was free!

This book has a lot of potential and I hope that it gets more plot building and character building added to the story because it could use a lot of fleshing out. It wasn't bad but it could use a lot of improvement.

Intriguing and beautifully written

Great details and the story seemed to come alive to me. I was more than intrigued by the characters and flow of the story. I can't wait to read the next installment

Interesting premise

It rambles a bit and has a few repetitious spots, but is interesting. Paludan/Rain stuffs a bit more philosophy and introspection into this book than the first, especially for action-oriented characters, but not so much that it brings the book to a halt.

As usual when it gets really really really good, you have to wait until the next book. Please hurry, I need to know what happened to Corbin.

This book was great. I could not put it down. The only thing I did not like was the cliff hanger at the end of the book. It definitely ensures that I buy the next book.
