Un soir de canicule, en août à Paris, deux couples se  rejoignent pour dîner. La soirée aura lieu chez Étienne. Claudia, sa compagne, d’une timidité maladive, a cuisiné  toute la journée pour masquer son appréhension. Johar et Rémi, leurs invités, n’ont pas l’esprit tranquille non plus. Autour de la table, les uns nourrissent des intentions cachées tandis que les autres font tout pour garder leurs secrets. L’odeur épicée d’un curry, une veste qui glisse d’un fauteuil, il suffit d’un rien pour que tout bascule.
Avec ce huis-clos renversant, Cécile Tlili interroge la place des femmes dans la société et tisse, avec délicatesse, une ode à l’émancipation et à la liberté.

I couldn’t put down this book. I read it in one day and I haven’t stopped thinking about it.

This book was very relatable, and highlights how mundane life can truly be. The book is full of broken relationships, compulsive liars and dark truths about identity and undesirability.

The prose is stunning, yet the characters and their livelihoods are sticky, overwhelming and confusing, which also reflects reality, which is also a mess.

Even those we love and swore that we would could spend the rest of our lives with them will eventually drift away. Instead of time bringing you closer, time emphasises the distance between you.

Set in the hot sweltering Paris, ‘Just a Little Dinner’ follows two couples who meet for dinner in one of their apartments. However little do they know that this dinner will reveal their true identities, past traumatic experiences and the painful reality of their broken relationships.

Definitely give this one a read if you have the time, it’s translated from French by Katherine Gregor and she did a brilliant job translating this book into English. I’m obsessed with the writing!!

Il peut s'en passer des choses, le temps d'un dîner... Des vies bouleversées, des secrets dévoilés, des pensées enfouies depuis longtemps enfin révélées.

Trahisons, mensonges, secrets, remise en question... mais aussi beaucoup d'émotions, des prises de décisions et de la sororité.

Un huis clot addictif que j'ai lu d'une traite !

A very dull story of interactions between two couples at a dinner party in modern Paris, though I couldn’t help but compare it to the BBC Play for Today from the Seventies, Abigail’s Party. Here though, far less happens.

It maybe that it suffers in translation. I say that because it won the Prix Goncourt for a debut novel in 2023.

Je voelt het onheil naderen….! Doet een beetje denken aan ‘het diner’ van Herman Koch.

Read for Book Club.
Has some beautifully worded phrases/sentences & plenty of good sentiments to take from it. Overall, though, it still feels one-dimensional and surprisingly repetitive for such a short book.
I'm not sure if I'm supposed to dislike all of the characters but I find them all irritating for different reasons (maybe that was intentional, idk)

Vier mensen hebben een diner op een late zomeravond in Parijs. Aan het einde van de avond zien alle levens er anders uit, er worden beslissingen genomen en knopen doorgehakt. Dit boek heeft me aangenaam verrast en heel mooi hoe Cécile Tlili in een paar zinnen een relatie kan typeren, of een situatie duidelijk kan maken.

Leider verschenkt dieses Debut etwas, weil die Geschichte ihre Kraft erst auf den letzten 50 Seiten entfaltet und noch dazu etwas vorhersehbar ist. Die Charaktere sind gut gestrickt, aber deren Aufeinandertreffen bei besagtem Abendessen hätte für meinen Geschmack etwas bissiger ausfallen können bei mehr wörtlicher Rede. Viele interessante Gedanken verbleiben nur im Inneren der Personen, was den Verlauf der Ereignisse etwas träge macht.

An enjoyable read, like a piece of theatre. Two couples gathered in a Parisian apartment on an oppressive August evening. Etienne, old money, struggling at work as the initial glow of his posh boy image is waning leaving not much substance in its wake. Johar is from a modest Tunisian family and has had to claw her way to the top. Remi her husband, long-time supportive of his wife's career, but is now having an affair with a younger colleague and finally, Claudia, the almost pathologically shy partner of Etienne, who cannot quite understand how she has found herself in this relationship.

As the awkward dinner plays out, I could feel the oppressiveness of the fraught relationships, the too-tight corporate clothes, the drift between the characters and their conflicting interests.

However, one thing that narks me a little is the story arc of Johar. I am always a bit disappointed with these tales of women who have fought their way tooth and nail to get to the top only to realise they aren't really sure if they want it. I read the author's biography and noticed that she herself seemed to have had a successful corporate career before branching into something else, and I completely appreciate that this is a valid message, but I notice we rarely get these tales of overcoming woe to get to the top for men who subsequently think 'oh actually after all this work, I think I will do something else'. The message seems to be women really only try and get to the top of the corporate world to prove they can do it, but once there, well they finally realise what is important and move on to something else.

However, this is a personal issue, the book was otherwise a very fun read.

this was just rich people talking and moaning. sadly I found this incredibly cliche, the characters very irritating and overall nothing progressed until the last 30 pages. I appreciate the themes explored but it felt completely unrefined and jumbled that I couldn’t connect with any character nor their personal story. I enjoyed how it was set against the backdrop of a single evening which added to this suffocating feeling of tension the book was going for but unfortunately it fell flat for me.

Intrigerend verhaal over een diner van vier vrienden die meer voor elkaar verborgen houden dan dat ze elkaar kennen. Ideaal script voor een arthouse-film met topacteurs.

Aantekeningen voor mezelf gemaakt. Eén grote spoiler.

Vier mensen, veertigers, komen bij elkaar voor een diner. Étienne, succesvol advocaat, is de organisator. Zijn vriendin, Claudia, fysiotherapeute, kookt. Johar (vrouw), succesvol manager in een IT-bedrijf, en Rémi (man) zijn de genodigden. Claude komt uit een gezin met maatschappelijk succesvolle maar liefdeloze ouders die zich als psychiater en gynaecoloog als ondernemers in de gezondheidszorg gedroegen. Claude is fysiotherapie gaan studeren want “‘Ik wilde graag voor andere mensen zorgen. Ik vind het fijn om mensen beter te maken, en dat lukt me beter met mijn handen dan met mijn woorden.’” In haar relatie met Etienne is zij ook de dienstbare, en hij de baas. “Ze heeft een hekel aan haar eigen dienstbaarheid, hoe ze zich gewillig de rol van gastvrouw aanmeet.” Ze is een relatie met Étienne aangegaan om los te komen van haar achtergrond en toegang te krijgen tot het elitaire geprivilegieerde milieu van hem. Maar: “Étienne kijkt haar niet aan. Hij ziet haar niet. Ze is niets.”

Johar en Rémi zijn bij elkaar maar ook weer niet: “‘Naar wie typt ze zo?’, zucht Rémi. ‘Het is lachwekkend hoe we van de ene op de andere dag gestopt zijn met elkaar te praten. Gestopt zijn elkaar te begrijpen. Als we elkaar ooit begrepen hebben.’” Dit zegt Rémi tegen Claudia, maar wacht haar reactie niet af en loopt weg; van communicatie lijkt geen sprake, alleen van statements. Misschien één van de redenen voor het door hem gesignaleerde probleem?

Johar is geboren en getogen in Frankrijk maar van Tunesische ouders. Ze heeft zich opgewerkt tot succesvolle, rijke en altijd werkende manager in IT. Ze leidt een bedrijfsovername waarin zijn een nog verantwoordelijker baan zal krijgen. Étienne wil de klus om haar juridisch bij te staan in dat proces. Zij heeft dat snel en kickt op de macht die ze over hem heeft. “Maar de waarheid is dat aan deze promotie de kwaadaardige geur van wraak kleeft.” Wraak omdat mensen eerder in har carrière niet in haar geloofden omdat ze vrouw is en van Tunesische afkomst. Ze heeft zich omhoog gevochten met keihard werken en de kloteklussen te doen: gesprekken met woedende klanten, medewerkers ontslaan, contracten corrigeren, software herschrijven, het wegpoetsen van het accent en taalfouten van haar opvoeding… Johar heeft het verlangen “om in de ogen van haar collega’s een zekere onderdanigheid te lezen.” Haar carrière is eenzaam: “dit kale, eenzame pad, dat haar stap voor stap heeft weggeleid van haar vrienden, haar ouders en Rémi. Dit pad waarop geen kinderstemmetje de stilte doorbreekt.”

Étienne heeft het als advocaat moeilijk op zijn kantoor; hij verliest klanten en daarmee aanzien. “Dit boekjaar stevent af op en catastrofe , als hij niet snel een paar nieuwe zaken binnenhaalt. Vanavond vecht hij voor zijn voortbestaan.” Étienne heeft een grote nieuwe deal nodig, zoals de bedrijfsovername van Johar. “(…) het zit in zijn aard om steeds maar meer te willen: steeds nog groter, steeds nog mooier.” Hij is voor Claudia gevallen omdat ze mooi is en hij haar verlegenheid als een uitdaging zag, “Maar ook, of misschien vooral, omdat hij wist dat zijn superioriteit over haar nooit ter discussie zou staan. Vanavond wordt hij misselijk bij de gedachte dat zij op een dag weleens medelijden met hem zou kunnen krijgen.”

Claudia is zwanger van Étienne maar heeft het hem nog niet verteld. Het kind is haar vlucht uit de eenzaamheid van haar ongelijkwaardige relatie.

Étienne is Franse middenklasse-bourgeois, opgegroeid in een winkeliersgezin in Reims. Hij kreeg het appartement van zijn ouders toen die in Normandië gingen wonen.

Rémi heeft een maîtresse, Manon. Als compensatie voor zijn gevoel van minderwaardigheid naast Johar en haar onthouding van liefde naar hem. “Rémi merkte dat hij hunkerde naar liefde. De onthouding daarvan, die Johar hem had aangedaan, was verschrikkelijk en de terugval duizelingwekkend.” Rémi merkt dat Manon ook gevoelens ontwikkelt voor hem. “Samenwonen met haar leek uitgesloten, maar het idee van een leven zonder haar scheen hem tegenwoordig ook volkomen absurd.”

“Meestal wordt er in de wereld van Étienne niet over geld gesproken, ook al is het overal aanwezig, weliswaar verborgen: in de perfecte pasvorm van een overhemd, het katachtige silhouet van een auto, de fluweelzachte afdronk van een wijn. Étienne heft Rémi zelf de kunst van de suggestie bijgebracht, zonder iets te hoeven zeggen, als het gaat om geld. (…) Uiteindelijk had Rémi begrepen dat wie ten volste van de luxe wil genieten een publiek nodig heeft.” Rémi vraagt zich af of hij Johar zou kunnen verlaten voor zijn maîtresse Manon: “Hij weet niet zeker of zijn liefde voor haar groot genoeg is om afstand te doen van alle comfort waar hij zo aan hecht.” Daarnaast betwijfelt Rémi if Manin nog wel in hem geïnteresseerd is als hij zijn maatschappelijke status en welvaart kwijtraakt.

Als Claudia tussen het afruimen van het hoofdgerecht en het dessert een miskraam krijgt, is de enige bij wie ze steun kan zoeken haar gynaecoloog. Die heeft op dat moment nachtdienst en kan haar in het ziekenhuis ontvangen. Ze besluit om Étienne te verlaten, pakt haar tas en vertrekt nog dezelfde avond. Nadat ook Rémi en Johar naar huis zijn, is Étienne alleen met zijn zelfbeklag over de ondankbare Claudia: “Ze had een interessante, beschaafde, rijke vrouw kunnen worden. Hij zou Claudia willen bellen om zijn woede uit te schreeuwen. (…) Claudia is vervangbaar en zal vervangen worden, besluit Étienne. (…) Étienne behoort niet tot het soort mensen dat gevoelig is voor spijt. Hij behoort tot de klasse die de hele wereld in hun schoot geworpen krijgt.”

Onderweg naar huis bekent Rémi aan Johar zijn nieuwe liefde. Johar bekent dat zij naar Tunesië vertrekt om zich in haar familieachtergrond te verdiepen in plaats van directeur te worden van het grote fusiebedrijf.

In de laatste scene staat Claudia op de stoep van het ziekenhuis. Het is bijna dag. Ze is er klaar voor.

Une déception.
Un huis clos qui aurait pu être plus réussi si le personnage principal n'était pas aussi stéréotypé et s'il renvoyait à une représentation véridique et vérifiée de la réalité :
Dans la famille tunisienne de Johar (Jawaher? Diamants?)les femmes attendent pour manger après les hommes, pratique révolue depuis de longues décennies. La femme tunisienne d'aujourd'hui s'est émancipée sur ts les plans pour être dans les premiers rangs de ts les domaines technologiques, éducatifs, médicaux, etc...
Pensant au 'Dîner à Montréal' de Besson, je me préparais à une lecture tellement plus profonde.
Dommage. Un premier roman d'une autrice dont je ne lirai pas les romans à venir.

Piccola tragicommedia parigina. Bella l'ambientazione, seppur breve fatta di piccoli pochi dettagli, il racconto mi ha subito immerso in una Parigi contemporanea, di fine estate, tra Boulevard e palazzi eleganti dell'alta borghesia urbana.
Un racconto che esalta la forza e la solidarietà che può nascere improvvisamente tra due semi sconosciute, un racconto che è forse satira e critica di un genere maschile un po' ottuso ed egoista, che posso si accorge di ciò che gli gira intorno, preso troppo dalle proprie meschinità e dai propri interessi.

Claudia and Étienne, a young couple are entertaining for dinner Étienne’s old friend Remi and his wife, Johar. By the end of the evening, lives, relationships, and their own self-opinion will have changed.
Any more than that, and there’s spoilers, but this delightful little novel, translated from the original French, swirls around their relationships with each other, their dependence on each other, and the web that this creates.

Recommandation du club de lecture et, si les avis que j'ai entendus ont fini par m'intriguer, je suis restée déstabilisée par ma lecture. Encore aujourd'hui, je ne sais pas si j'ai aimé ou pas 🤔

L'autrice nous propose ici deux couples qui vont se retrouver le temps d'une soirée autour d'un repas. Claudia, Étienne, Johar, Rémi. Claudia est en couple avec Étienne, lui-même ami avec Rémi, lui-même marié à Johar. Ils ont chacun quelque chose à cacher, une carte à jouer et ce dîner ne va pas se révéler si simple... 😬

Je suis complètement sortie de ma zone de confort avec ce livre. Premier roman de l'autrice, je peux d'ores et déjà dire que j'ai beaucoup aimé sa plume que j'ai trouvée parfois poétique, parfois mordante mais toujours juste. Elle m'a emportée à travers ce dîner singulier, autour de ses personnages tout en nuances. C'était déroutant mais terriblement addictif 😨 Moi qui suis habituée à l'action, au sang et à la violence, j'ai été surprise qu'avec si peu de rebondissements, mon attention tout entière ait été retenue 😅

Le rythme n'est pas lent, les chapitres sont courts et l'autrice nous offre tous les points de vue des quatre personnages. Le lecteur assiste à la mascarade, absolument scotché et dans l'expectative. Ce dîner somme toute innocent va changer leur vie à tous les quatre. Claudia, kinésithérapeute, est issue de parents tous deux médecins et membre d'une grande fratrie. D'une timidité maladive, elle vit dans l'ombre de son compagnon Étienne. Pendant les trois quarts du roman, je me suis identifiée à elle. Elle m'a rappelé celle que j'étais et j'ai éprouvé de la peine pour elle. Et j'ai forcément détesté Étienne : manipulateur, très porté sur le paraître, antipathique... Quel mari idéal, n'est-ce pas ? 🙄

À l'inverse, j'ai beaucoup aimé Rémi. Toujours joyeux malgré ses blessures, intelligent et qui, pourtant, est en mal d'amour. Celle qui me laisse une impression plus mitigée est la dernière des quatre : Johar. L'autrice nous la décrit tantôt froide, tantôt chaleureuse et humaine. À deux doigts d'être à la tête d'une entreprise cotée, elle se sera battue longuement pour en arriver là. Sa détermination est incroyable. Mais... n'en est-elle pas venue à oublier l'essentiel ? 🤨

On assiste à ce huis-clos étouffant et, à la fin, avec l'impression que tout s'effondre. L'autrice aborde plusieurs sujets importants sans pour autant s'y attarder vraiment. Des personnages crédibles, une scène tout à fait réaliste. Il m'a semblé que le cœur de cette histoire est le courage et à mon sens, trois d'entre eux ont eu le courage de retrouver leur liberté 🕊

C'est un roman court (moins de 200 pages) et à mes yeux, c'est la longueur parfaite. Ça n'a pas manqué de développement, tout est très bien raconté. Et arrivée à la fin de ma chronique, je me rends bien compte qu'elle est vraiment positive. Je suis pourtant déroutée mais je dois me rendre à l'évidence : je crois que j'ai globalement aimé. Ça m'a permis de souffler après l'énorme pavé d'Iron Flame. Je devrais faire ça plus souvent ! 😂

En conclusion, une découverte que je ne regrette pas mais qui m'a quand même bien chamboulée. Est-ce que ça vous est déjà arrivé de sortir de votre zone de confort et d'en être décontenancé.e ? 👀

Es gibt Tage, an denen wacht man morgens in einer Welt auf, die am Abend eine ganz andere ist. Manchmal hängen die Parameter von einem selber ab. Manchmal liefern andere die Gründe. Ein Sommerabend in einer Wohnung am Boulevard Raspail und 4 Protagonist*innen stehen in diesem Kammerspiel auf der Bühne.

Étienne, Sohn, wohlhabender Eltern, gut aussehend und erfolgreich steckt in Schwierigkeiten. Seine Kanzlei läuft nicht mehr so gut, und er braucht Protektion von Johar, einer erfolgreichen Managerin, die gleichzeitig die Frau seines besten Freundes Rémi ist. Also lädt er beide zum Essen ein, dass seine etwas unscheinbare und sehr introvertierte Freundin Claudia zubereiten wird.

Es entspinnt sich ein Abend, in dem alle versuchen, ein Dinner hinter sich zu bringen und jeder mit unterschiedlichen Problemen kämpft. Die Beziehungen, die sich zur jeweils anderen Figur gestaltet, gilt, es zu entschlüsseln. Dabei wechseln wir die Positionen und lehnen uns am besten mit einer großen Tüte Popcorn zurück, um die Entwicklungen zu genießen. Man ahnt zwar schon, dass am Ende des Abends Risse tiefer und Gräben unüberwindbarer sein werden, doch der Weg ist hier, wie so oft das Ziel.

Tlili bringt ganz geschickt viele Themen auf den Tisch. Die Fragilität von Männern z.B., die mit beiden Beinen im Leben zu stehen scheinen und trotzdem mit ihrem Ego hadern. Dem gegenüber steht das Verlangen nach Familie auf unterschiedlichste Weise. Auch der Gap zwischen Karriere und der Suche nach sich selbst findet seinen Platz, genauso wie die allgegenwärtigen Themen Klassismus und Rassismus. Ich finde es sehr gut, dass die Autorin sich entschieden hat, dabei nicht im Klischee verhaftet zu bleiben. Jede Figur wirkt am Anfang eher befremdlich, wenn nicht sogar unsympathisch, doch kann man sich gut in ihre Lage hinein fühlen. Am Ende habe ich für jeden eine gewisse Empathie entwickelt. Die Autorin hat die große Gabe mit wenigen Worten vielschichtige Persönlichkeiten zu gestalten.

Den sinnlichen Rahmen den Tlili gewählt macht das Lesevergnügen zu einem wahren Genuss. Die Zubereitung und der Verzehr der Köstlichkeiten, lassen einem das Wasser im Mund zusammen laufen. Das Mahl bekommt zwar nicht so einen exponierten Platz, wie in Teresa Präauers „Kochen im falschen Jahrhundert“, doch fühlte ich mich das Öfteren an diesen Roman erinnert.

Wie ein Film lief das Wechselspiel von Dialogen und Gefühlen vor mir ab. Ich hab das Buch verschlungen und bin überrascht, wie gut und anspruchsvoll mich dieses Debüt unterhalten hat.

Ich empfehle es allen, die auf der Suche nach einem schnellen aber reichhaltigen, literarischen Kick sind und ein gutes Essen niemals ablehnen würden.

After what felt like a marathon of reading endurance (aka The Loneliness of Sonia & Sunny) I could not have taken a bigger 180 to this tightly told work in translation.

Just a Little Dinner is translated from the French, and impeccably so. Often with a translated work a reader will sense something that just feels off (which makes sense - not everything translates)! But not here - it’s perfectly rendered.

As I read this tiny book (just 155 pages) I felt as though I was watching a one act stage production. The set is really “just a little dinner” party given by Claudia and Etienne as they host friends Johar and Remi on a hot August night in Paris. There are secrets between the couples, (both husband and wife, and between “the” couples) and as Claudia dutifully cooks dinner for everyone amidst sweltering weather, the facades begin to crumble.

Just a Little Dinner is classified in French as a “Huis clos” meaning “closed door” and it is the perfect way to describe this tight book. It is also a little story with a lot to say. I imagined a snow globe...the scene is quiet and with just one little quake the entire setting topples.

Tlili wove the thin thread of tension throughout the story just tightly enough that by the end, nothing was as it seemed when the party began.

This won’t be for everyone by any stretch, but it’s a provocative read that puts a magnifying glass on two marriages and four people, with shattering consequences.

No, non è affatto una cena tranquilla quella di cui ci parla Cécile Tlili in questo suo primo, convincentissimo romanzo. Claudia è una fisioterapista, estremamente timida e si sente molto inferiore al marito Etienne, un avvocato d'affari parigino, che l’ha sedotta soltanto perché non le facesse troppa ombra. Ha organizzato lui questa cena. Ha invitato una coppia di vecchi amici, Johar e Rémi, che Claudia ha visto solo una volta. È terrorizzata al pensiero di questa serata e di come gli amici dle marito potrebbero giudicarla. Rémi è un professore di economia, è stato lui a insistere perché venissero a questa cena. Johar è una brillante ingegnera a cui è stato appena offerto l'incarico di direttrice generale di un grande gruppo. In questa serata di fine estate, i padroni di casa, come gli ospiti, riveleranno molto di sé stessi.
Nello spazio di queste poche ore, infatti, tutto cambierà per questi quattro personaggi, ognuno dei quali ha dei segreti da proteggere, segreti che alla fine verranno a galla senza che nessuno possa impedirlo. Il romanzo diventa così per l'autrice un pretesto per affrontare diverse questioni scottanti: il posto della donna nella coppia, le motivazioni del successo professionale, l’importanza delle proprie origini familiari ed etniche ed altro ancora. E lo fa con profonda intuizione e grande finezza sia in relazione ai conflitti interiori dei personaggi che agli imbrogli in corso dietro quella che doveva essere solo una semplice cena. Uno di quei romanzi che una volta iniziati, è difficile mettere giù perché prevale il desiderio di sapere come andrà a finire. Esordio narrativo più che convincente, quindi, per l’autrice francese.

Questa lettura è statata una vera scoperta , mi ha affascinsta da subito. Mi è piaciuta molto la storia e la scrittura è molto scorrevole. Parla di una cena in cui i protagonisti dovrebbero essere un minimo amici , ma non è sempre così , perché , per tutta la sera , c'é una tensione che si può tagliare con il coltello. Sono a casa di Claudia e Etienne e l'altra coppia è quella di Johar e Remi. Fra loro ci sono forti segreti: tradimenti , una gravidanza non detta e una nomina non voluta. Durante la cena , ci sono i loro pensieri , che volano sulle loro teste e vorrebbero avere la voce , per dire finalmente la verità. Una cena può cambiare le vite delle persone? I segreti sono al centro di queste persone molto tristi , perché , alla fine , è così , tante menzogne , ma non per una vita migliore. Ho amato tantissimo questo libro e di questo devo ringraziare la mia libraia del cuore , della Libreria Fogola Pisa: infatti è diventato il lubro del mese del mio gruppo di lettura. Volevo fare i complimenti all'autrice per averlo scritto.

The Tea Ladies by Amanda Hampson is like a warm hug on a chilly day, heartwarming, with a touch of peril making this a thoroughly enjoyable read.

The story is set in Sydney during the sixties and follows the adventures of a delightful group of women who meet every week for tea and companionship. Pretty quickly, Hazel, Betty, and Irene become amateur sleuths, uncovering corruption and ruthless gangs willing to stop at nothing to get what they want. Hazel’s job in a fashionwear company is under threat as the swinging sixties herald cultural change, and the company needs to embrace change to stay in business. Hazel needs to save the business. I loved Betty and her haphazard notetaking; she was a wonderfully scatty lady, full of character and charm.

What I absolutely loved was the wit and humour woven throughout this twisty story. The author weaves the pace of a cosy mystery with a deep and kind-hearted exploration of women and the bonds of female friendship and companionship. The writing is warm and engaging, wrapping the reader in a world where laughter, tears, and tender moments of reflection flow as freely as the tea.

Tea ladies come from a bygone time in workplace history, they were often able to access all parts of an organisation and her witness to all sorts, and often became a listening ear to staff, treating everyone with the same respect.

If you enjoy stories that are gentle, enriching, and full of heart, The Tea Ladies is the perfect book to curl up with on a quiet afternoon.

Elles m’intriguaient, ces jambes dans l’escalier. Des billets enthousiastes, et je me décide à lire ce roman de la RL 2023.

J’ai aimé ce dîner dans un appartement cossu mais dont on découvre l’envers du décor petit à petit.

J’ai aimé Claudia la discrète et j’ai eu de la peine pour elle.

J’ai aimé Johar et sa remise en question, ses souvenirs de Tunisie enfant.

J’ai eu plus de mal avec Rémi, qui m’a paru bien fade, mais sans doute est-ce fait exprès.

J’ai détesté Etienne et son assurance inébranlable.

J’ai aimé les leitmotivs : les personnages qui tour à tour perdent l’équilibre, les personnages qui serrent le bras des autres, le balcon comme refuge.

J’ai aimé ce dîner qui va tout changer pour chacun d’une façon différente.

L’image que je retiendrai :

Celle du curry de poulet qu’a préparé Claudia pendant des heures et qu’elle ne mangera pas.
