About the author

Mannu Bhandari was born on April 3, 1931, in Bhanpura, Madhya Pradesh, India. She attended school in Ajmer and later she graduated from Calcutta University in 1949, followed by an M.A. degree in Hindi from the Banaras Hindu University in 1953.
She is wife of famous Hindi writer Rajendra Yadav, with whom she co-wrote the book, Ek Inch Muskaan (A Little Smile).

In post independent Hindi literature many new women writers emerged
and attracted the attention of readers and critics but after initial shining some
of them did not make writing of their successful career. Many women writers
have entered the arena of literary writing. Several highly talented writers have
enriched Hindi literature with their creative writings. To name a few Usha
Priyamvada, Malti Joshi, Dipti Khandelwal, Mridila Garg, Mannu Bhandari,
Shubha Verma are some of the most accomplished contemporary Hindi
women writers. Their writing reflect how modernism, contemporary social
situations and currents and cross currents at life have molded their writing and
subject matter as well as impact on them. Moreover these women writers
have written about Indian women, their pains, conflicts, predicaments against
the background of contemporary India. They have focused their attention not
only on the outer situation and conflict but also on inner turmoil of modern
women. In this reference writer like Mannu Bhandari deserves special
attention. Her contribution to the world of fiction dates to the 6os. She has
written in and experimented with varieties of genres of literature like the short
story novel, political novel, literature for children, drama, screen play, and
dialogues for film etc. Mannu Bhandari has also chaired the directorship of
Premchand Srujanpith in Vikram University, Ujjian. In 2008 Mannu Bhandari
was given for her autobiography Ek Kahani Yah Bhi the prestigious Vyas
Sanmaan for year 2008, which is instituted by the K.K. Birala Foundation and
given every year for outstanding literary work in Hindi authored by Indian citizens.

मन्नू भंडारी द्वारा लिखित यह आत्मकथ्य उनके संस्मरणों का पुलिंदा कहा जा सकता है. न की संपूर्ण आत्मकथा. जिसे पढ़ने के बाद हमें उनके बचपने के कई चित्र मिलते है जिनमें पिता सुखसम्पतराय भंडारी से कई मसलों में असहमति के बावजूद लेखन-संस्कार उनसे ही मिला. आगे उनकी जीवन यात्रा में कलकत्ता का वर्णन एवं क्रम से आए वह लोग जो उनके इर्द-गिर्द आते है एवं जीवन में अभिन्न अंग है. और अन्ततः राजेन्द्र यादव से उनकी मुलाकात का सिलसिला.

मन्नू भंडारी के लेखकीय जीवन के अनेक पहलू का चित्रण इसमें मिलता है साथ ही साथ कहानी बनने और उसके पीछे के अंतर्दशा को भी हम जान पाते है. एक प्रतिष्ठित लेखक राजेन्द्र यादव के बीच उनके निजी जिंदगी का आंकलन वह बेबाकी से करती है. और विवाह के बीच आए गेप को बचाने एवं भरने के क्रम में उनकी जो मनोदशा का चित्रण उन्होंंने किया है, उससे उनके आत्मकथ्य के साथ-साथ राजेन्द्र यादव के जीवन की भी झांकी हमें देखने को मिलती है. जिसमें उनके असंवेदनशील रवैये से हमें खुद चिड़ होती है. और कई सवाल मन में उठते है.

उनके रचना संसार के साथ-साथ उस दरम्यान राजनीतिक और साहित्यिक हलचलों को भी मन्नू जी ने बखूबी उकेरा है. जिसमें नई कहानी आंदोलन का दौर और अन्ततः उसका हश्र, भारत में इमरजेंसी का समय आदि.

'आपका बंंटी' एवं 'महाभोज' जैसी रचना की लेखिका का आत्मकथ्य पठनीय है. जो हमें उनके जीवन के साथ-साथ साहित्यिक यात्रा को समझने में मदद करेगी. हालांकि यह किताब मुझे पूर्ण नहीं लगती. कई बार लेखिका बहुत से बातों एंव संदर्भों का हिंट देते हुए बच के आगे निकल जाती है उसे विस्तार दिए बिना. बजाय उसे खुलकर व्यक्त करने की. बावजूद इसे एकबार अवश्य पढ़ा जाना चाहिए.

An autobiography is but one’s own story written in one’s own words. Story of one’s successes and failures- in writing, in relationships and in life.

It is also the story of significant ‘others’, in one’s life- atleast to the extent they share their lives with the protagonist. And that’s where it gets tricky. How does one bring objectivity in painting those characters, who are real people and often well known, when one was so much a part of the events being narrated. How does one see beyond one’s own viewpoint, how does one remain objective, particularly when those events were emotive and life changing.

In writing her autobiography ‘EK KAHAANI YEH BHI’, apart from her dated notes, diaries and memories, the author Mannu Bhandari relies on news reports and extracts of speeches, articles, literary works and forewords published by other contemporary authors for corroboration and evidence.

Credit is due to Mannu ji for presenting the other possible perspective, wherever it was known to her. And on other occasions, for frankly confessing to her lack of knowledge of the other perspective and giving the benefit of doubt to the person in question.

Credit is also due to her for being non-malicious in her intentions. This, I believe is a critical tenet for any author. As a reader, I felt that the objective of the author was to share her life with the readers, rather than to take a morally high ground or to castigate anyone else.

The biggest evidence of this is the deliberate omission of a key person from the story in order to protect privacy and reputation of two key people.

The glimpses of the world of litterateurs- the machinations, the challenges, the disappointments, the motivations and most importantly, the sheer power of talent, make the book very interesting. While Rajendra Yadav, Mohan Rakesh and Kamleshwar were prominently present, other authors like Mahasweta Devi also find a mention.

It singularly struck me how Mannu ji remains aloof of all the politics in which her (male) contemporary authors were so entrenched; yet establishes herself as an acclaimed as well as successful writer. Also, how she bears family and job responsibilities along with her writing work. It was admirable and inspiring.

Readers get a clear image of the woman in her- instances of her tough decision as well as lack of them; the latter representing the ‘feminine’ side of hers and the former the ‘masculine’. In the words of Virginia Woolf, “One is not born a woman, but becomes one.”

The most prominent emotion that I experienced as a reader, was that of pain and anguish that the author went through in her personal life. ‘WHY’ was the single most piercing question raised by the book in my mind. Did she suffer for being a woman, besides being a professor and an author? The question will continue to resonate in my mind, for times to come.

While picking up this book, I was also looking for inspiration to write. How did Mannu ji take to writing, why would she write, where did she find her characters, what was her journey of being a writer, mistakes she made, rules of language and grammar that she followed, how did she switch from one genre to another and how did she receive praise and criticism of her works. I found answers to many of these and that was the part I enjoyed most.

Writing about ‘_Apka Banti’_, her novel that I have relished the most, she says that the reactions of readers took her by surprise. While _Banti_ received all the love and sympathy, _Shakun_ did not receive her share of empathy. She was treated with contempt and apathy for being a woman who chose to remarry and struggled between parenthood and responsibilities of a new marriage. The author also saw her own dilemmas in this character.

The book has stirred me as well as inspired me. It would be no exaggeration to say that I am a changed person.

मन्नू भंडारी की आत्मकथा "एक कहानी यह भी" बहुत ईमानदारी से लिखी हुई आत्मकथा है।वैसे आत्मकथा मेरी अब तक पढ़ी किताबों की सूची में बहुत कम हैं..लेकिन अब तक जितनी भी पढ़ी हैं उनमें ये सबसे अलग रही है..आमतौर पर मैंने आत्मकथाओं में लेखकों को जीवन के अच्छे,रोचक पलों को ज़्यादा महत्व देते देखा है और साथ ही वे ऐसे संघर्षों का उल्लेख भी करते हैं जिनसे वो किसी ख़ास मंज़िल तक पहुँचने के अपने सफ़र को और महत्वपूर्ण बता सकें..निजी जीवन की कई ऐसी बातें जो उनकी किसी कमी को उजागर करें..उन्हें आत्मकथाओं में स्थान कम ही मिलता है,लेकिन इस आत्मकथा में अपनी हर कमी को मन्नू भंडारी ने ज़्यादा स्थान दिया है।आत्मकथाएँ पढ़ना मतलब किसी के जीवन में झाँकना..किसी के जीवन को उसी के नज़रिए से समझना..आत्मकथा ईमानदारी से लिखना जितना मुश्किल है,उतना ही मुश्किल है उसे समझना..सो इसे पढ़ते हुए ये मुश्किल समय-समय पर सामने आयी।

शुरुआत एक नोट से करता हूँ।

Note : इस बहुचर्चित लेखक दम्पति के बारे में अब के समय में लगभग सारी जानकारियां और पक्ष-विपक्ष में लेख बस एक क्लिक पर उपलब्ध है। हिंदी साहित्य में रूचि रखने वाले लोग मसालेदार इंटरव्यूज तथा आत्मकथा टाइप की पुस्तकों के माध्यम से सबकुछ जान चुके हैं। इसलिए "कहानी" पर यहाँ कुछ नहीं लिख रहा हूँ।

लेखिका ने स्पष्ट रूप से कहा है कि यह उनकी आत्मकथा नहीं है; यह उनके लेखकीय व्यक्तित्व और लेखन-यात्रा पर केंद्रित है।

लेकिन क्या ऐसा संभव है कि जीवन का एक पहलू दूसरे पहलुओं से अनछुआ रह सके !!

लेखिका ने इसमें अपने बचपन, स्कूल, कॉलेज, नौकरी, विवाह, वैवाहिक जीवन, मित्र-मंडली, भाई-बहनों से सम्बन्ध, दाम्पत्य जीवन का टूटना आदि का ज़िक्र किया है। वे कहती हैं कि इनसब ने लेखन को प्रभावित किया ही है, अतः उतना ही ज़िक्र है जितने से मेरे लेखकीय यात्रा पर इनके प्रभाव को जाना जा सके।

एक स्त्री का वैवाहिक जीवन शुरू होते ही टूटने लगे तो फिर जीवन के किसी भी पहलू पर लिखना चाहेगी तो इस टॉपिक पर घुसेगी ही और बार-बार घुसेगी। न चाहते हुए भी कई पहलू को छेड़ेगी। कुछ ऐसा ही इसमें भी है। राजेन्द्र यादव पर काफी फोकस किया गया है लेकिन कहीं भी इस फोकस में लिचड़पन नहीं है। सब कुछ ढँक कर ही लिखा गया है। लेखिका कहती भी हैं कि अगर कभी राजेन्द्र यादव अपना आत्मकथ्य लिखेंगे तो उनका पक्ष भी क्लियर होगा और तब शायद लेखिका कटघरे में खड़ी होंगी। लेकिन लेखिका मानती है कि राजेन्द्र यादव "घुन्ना" है इसलिए शायद कभी लिखे ही नहीं।

लेकिन लेखिका पर आर्थिक रूप से निर्भर और खुद के लेखकीय यात्रा में संघर्षरत राजेन्द्र यादव "हंस" पत्रिका के माध्यम से सफलता की बुलंदियों को छूने के बाद अपनी आत्मकथा लिखते हैं। इस आत्मकथा में लेखिका पर लगाये आक्षेपों या खुद की सफाई पर दिए वक्तव्यों के जवाब स्वरुप लेखिका भी एक लेख छपवाती हैं और बाद में उसे इस पुस्तक में "पूरक प्रसंग" के रूप में जोड़ती भी हैं। इस 'पूरक प्रसंग' पर किये गए खुलासे पर कहती हैं ― समय और स्थितियों ने जिन घावों पर पपड़ियाँ जमा दी थीं, उन्हें खुरचने की पहल तो राजेन्द्र ने ही की। वे शायद भूल गए कि खुरचे हुए घावों से तो केवल मवाद ही बहेगा !

लेखकों के जीवन या यूँ कहें कि मानव मन में झाँकने और जानने समझने को मिलता है इस 'आत्मकथ्य' में। उस वक्त के चोटी के लेखकों की आपसी दोस्ती, जलन, मनमुटाव आदि की भी एक झांकी मिल जाती है। लेखिका की प्रसिद्ध रचनाओं के पीछे का scene भी जानने समझने को मिलता है। इनकी सबसे प्रसिद्ध कृति है ― आपका बंटी। इसे छपवाने से पहले एक बहुत ही फेमस लेखक की अनुमति भी ली गई थी क्योंकि इस कहानी में कहीं-न-कहीं उनका व्यक्तिगत जीवन भी लिखा गया था। ऐसी ही कई बातों को जानना रोचक लगता है।

P. S. : मेरी इस धारणा को भी मज़बूती मिलती है कि लेखकों के लेख से मतलब रखना चाहिए, उनके निजी जीवन या चरित्र से नहीं।

Ek kahanki Yah Bhai – autobiography- Mannu Bhandari- born 03 rd April, 1931- Author is popular Hindi author of Nai Kahani movement along with Krishna Sobti, Rajendra Yadav, Bhisham Sahani, Kamaleshwar, Nirmal Verma. For her autobiography, she has been awarded the prestigious Vyas Samman by K K Birla Foundation. This book describes her life in Bhanpura, Indore and Ajmer up to her secondary education, 1946. This was a period when Indians were fighting the British for independence of the nation. Her father Sukhsampat rai Bhandari was a freedom fighter and had prepared an English to Hindi to English to Marathi dictionary. She describes that she was not of fair complexion as her sister, therefore, her father considered her more beautiful. She was the youngest daughter among 5 – 2 sisters- 2 brother family. Her teacher encouraged her write in Hindi language about the problems faced by women post- independence. In the book, she has described her life as a teacher at Rani Birla College, Kolkata. Later, she taught at Miranda House College, Delhi. Along with her teaching duties, she has written books on issues related to women related topics. Her style of writing is simple and effective. One chapter of this autobiography has been included in Secondary School Hindi language syllabus. It is a good read book for all.

Having read this book, I can say it is one of the most challenging works by Manu Bhandari that I have read so far. It demands a rare perseverance—both to witness her acts of forgiveness and to follow the immense grit with which she holds her personal conflicts while fulfilling the responsibilities of work and writing. In her signature style, she lays it all bare, negotiating the emotional turbulence a writer negotiates while living an ordinary life. Through her honesty, I finally understood what it means to write from the heart.

The critical reflections on her marriage (which covers most of the content) is debatable but I could see an unmistakable tenderness. They reveal just how deeply she cared, and one has to read the book to understand the full weight of that truth.

A difficult read—yes. Because here she is neither ideal nor idealised. She is simply Mannu, unguarded and unembellished. And once again, I found myself falling in love with her.

Mannu Bhandari's autobiography takes us through her life which conceivably shaped her writings: the childhood that left her filled with insecurities, everyday cafe' meetings with the contemporary writers in Delhi dwindled by personal politics, her struggles to sustain a career within the bounds of a difficult marriage and selfless friendships which kept her from breaking apart.

यह किताब प्रसिद्ध हिन्दी लेखिका मन्नू भंडारी जी की आत्मकथा है । हालाँकि वे खुद इसे अपनी आत्मकथा नही मानतीं; बल्कि कहती हैं कि यह सिर्फ़ उनके लेखकीय जीवन और उससे जुड़े संबंधों की कहानी है और इसे पुख्ता करने के लिए वे कहती भी हैं कि “इसीलिए इसका शीर्षक भी ‘एक कहानी यह भी’ रखा मैंने !” पर हम यह नही मानते ! जैसै कि कहा जाता है और सच भी है कि कोई भी इंसान पूरी ईमानदारी से अपनी ज़िंदगी की सारी कहानी नही कह सकता, वह अपने श्वेत श्याम पक्षों को एक साथ बाहर नही ला सकता (कम से कम कागजों पर तो बिल्कुल नही) । तो इस नजरिए से देखें तो ‘एक कहानी यह भी’ एक मुकम्मल आत्मकथा है । मन्नू जी का इसे आत्मकथा न मानना शायद उनकी शालीनता ही है ! या फिर उनकी वह हीनता ग्रंथि (जिसका ज़िक्र वे बार बार किताब में करती हैं), जिसकी वजह से उन्हें अपना हर काम तुक्का लगता है ! शायद इसी वजह से उन्हें लगता होगा कि वे एक ‘अच्छी आत्मकथा’ नही लिख सकतीं ! पर लिखना उनका काम है और मूल्यांकन करना हमारा ! और जितने भी लोगों ने यह किताब पढ़ी होगी, सभी जानते होंगे कि यह एक बेमिसाल आत्मकथा है, जिसमें एक नौकरीपेशा-संघर्षरत लेखिका; जो घर और बाहर की सारी जिम्मेदारियों से लदी हैं, एक जिद्दी-कुंठित मगर प्रसिद्ध लेखक पति (राजेन्द्र यादव) के आचरणों से तंग हैं और फिर भी अपनी लेखकीय जरूरतें पूरी कर रही हैं - के जीवन का पूरा लेखा जोखा है । इस किताब में आप लेखिका को ज़िंदगी के कई पक्षों के बीच झूलते हुए तथा उससे उपजी समस्याओं से निपटने का उनका नायाब जुनून भी देख पाएंगे । राजेन्द्र यादव उनके पति थे । उनके ‘ना समझ आने वाले’ व्यक्तित्व को झेलते हुए मन्नू जी जिंदगी बिताती हैं । इस किताब में खासतौर से राजेन्द्र जी पर बहुत अधिक ध्यान है । उनके व्यक्तित्व के कई पक्षों को समझने की कवायद करती दिखती हैं लेखिका । एक लेखक से इतर अपनी पूर्व पत्नी की नजर में राजेन्द्र जी क्या थे, यह हमें दिख जाता है । खैर, बात अब किताब की लेखन शैली की - मन्नू जी ने इस किताब को अपनी चिर परिचित प्रवाहमयी शैली में लिखा है, जो पाठक को बाँधे रखता है । पूरी किताब में जिस तरह से मन्नू जी ने अपने विभिन्न संबंधों के बारे में और खुद के एक बेटी, फिर एक छात्रा, फिर एक शिक्षिका, फिर एक शिक्षिका-लेखिका, फिर एक शिक्षिका-पत्नी-लेखिका, फिर एक माँ-शिक्षिका-पत्नी-लेखिका बनने तक को सफर को लिखा है, वह प्रंशसनीय है । किताब की भाषा शैली के कारण ही आप इस पूरी किताब को अच्छे से ग्रहण कर सकेंगे । किताब मन्नू जी के इंसानी पक्ष को उन्हीं के शब्दों में बखूबी दर्शाती है । पढ़ते हुए हम उनके संघर्षों से जुड़ते हैं, उनकी उपलब्धियों पर खुश होते हैं और उनके साथ ही साथ चलते हैं। शब्दों का चयन खूबसूरत है । कहीं कहीं के व्यंग्यमयी वाक्य विन्यास किताब को एक मसखरा पुट देते हैं, जो अच्छा लगता है । कुल मिलाकर एक लेखिका, जो अपने पति के स्नेहमयी साथ के लिए तरसती हैं, नौकरी करते हुए भी लिखती हैं और ढेर सारे संबंधों को बहुत कुशलता से साथ लिए चलती हैं, का पूरा जीवन उतर आया है किताब में । हिन्दी का लेखक किन आर्थिक परिस्थितियों में जीवन गुजारता है, यह भी आप जान पाएँगे । एक लेखक कैसे अपने ही अनुभवों का इस्तेमाल अपने लिखने में करता है, यह बहुत विस्तार में मन्नू जी अपने अनुभवों के सहारे बताती हैं । इस किताब में मन्नू जी के बहुत अच्छे अच्छे वक्तव्य हैं, जो कहीं कहीं झकझोरते हैं, कहीं कहीं सच्चाई से रूबरू कराते हैं तो कहीं कहीं एक चुप्पी दे जाते हैं । वे अपने आप में बहुत बड़ी बात कह जाते हैं । कुछ उदाहरण हैं –
“स्वीकृति की सान पर चढ़कर ही शायद आत्मविश्वास को ऐसी धार मिलती है ।“
“सिर पर बैठे हुक्मरान सनक में लिपटे अपने अहं की तुष्टि के लिए सरहदों को जब जोड़ते-तोड़ते...घटाते-बढ़ाते रहते हैं तो क्या एक बार भी उन्हें अपनी जमीन से जुड़े...अपनी ज़मीन को जान से भी ज्यादा प्यार करने वाले लोगों का ध्यान नही आता ?”
“केवल बाहरी भिन्नता के आधार पर अपनी परंपराओं और पीढ़ियों को नकारने वालों को क्या सचमुच इस बात का बिलकुल अहसास नही होता कि उनका आसन्न अतीत किस कदर उनके भीतर जड़ जमाए बैठा रहता है ! समय का प्रवाह भले ही हमें विपरीत दिशाओं में बहाकर ले जाए....स्थितियों का दबाव भले ही हमारा र��प बदल दे, हमें पूरी तरह उससे मुक्त तो नही कर सकता !”
“..हर रचना एक पड़ाव, जिसमें यहां तक पहुँचने के सुख संतोष से ज्यादा आगे जाने का उत्साह भरा रहता है ।“

कुछ बातें तो खैर छिपी हुई लगती हैं, उन्हें शायद वे कह न सकी होंगी । पर फिर भी एक अवश्य-पठनीय साहित्यिक कृति तो है ही यह किताब । मेरे ख्याल में, इसे हर उस पाठक को पढ़ना चाहिए, जो ‘नई कहानी’ दौर का प्रशंसक है । मन्नू जी उस वक्त की अग्रणी लेखिका रही हैं और उनकी यह आत्मकथा आनंदित करती है ।

Sometimes,you are so intrigued by an author's work that you want to read everything about their life and which circumstances enabled them to write glorious pieces of literature..Mannu Bhandari is one of those great writers whose work on female psychology,feelings and the vibrant culture of India will always be remembered..Here is her life story.....

In her life story(mind you not autobiography as the writer says herself) Mannuji describes childhood,love life,life as a writer,life as a mother,political agitation in the country and broken marriage.It such vivid a portrayal that it will really move you to see the life of a writer growing from a girl to a lady while describing the inspirations for her stories and work and hence aptly named -Ek Kahani Yeh Bhi..Mannuji describes the real life people or incidents that have influenced her work so the book will become a huge burden for you if you are not really familiar with the author's work this BOOK IS NOT FOR YOU..I suggest you to first read some of her story collections preferably "mein haar gayi" for a better understanding of this book.

Also nearly midway into the book there is too much description of publishing houses and there it is when you will find it hard to concentrate but once that topic is over this is a great masterpiece about the richness and poverty of Indian culture-------The before and aftermath assassination of Indra Gandhi is so realistically described that it will compel you to think on unnecessary hatred and its effect on the common masses.The book is written in a free style with several episodes which makes it easier for the author to convey her thoughts.......A glimpse into a writer's life-one can easily find Mannuji as both a writer and social worker with so much sympathy and humanity in her you will easily admire her....

SO while a little offbeat in the middle the entire book is a treat to read.Mannu Bhandariji's respect for Hindi and the Indian culture easily makes her a living legend..:)...
