LEGENDS ARE NOT BORN. THEY ARE FORGED BY COURAGE & STEEL.
When Dagr's kingdom and his wife are held ransom by an evil sorcerer, Dagr goes on a quest to give the sorcerer what he wants. But, at what cost is Dagr willing to go to save his kingdom?
Thus begins the first tale of Dagr Brightsword.
Excerpt:
King Dagr always prided himself on his strength. He was always able to use brute force and cunning to win his battles; but all of that was worthless right now, as cold sea water entered his lungs, and his muscles went weak.
He furtively tried to punch at the ice above him, to try and delay his inevitable demise.
But the ice didn’t respond or sympathize with his wishes. His lungs burned as his mind kept trying to succumb to the darkness of death.
On the clear ice, he could see two black boots above him. Dagr then started punching, kicking and tried screaming to get the man to help.
The man went on his knees, and stared at the King. Much to Dagr’s horror, it was a skull. The skull laughed at him, its red eyes glowed like a feral animal. It was death, come to claim his mortal soul…
Jake Scholl was born in Boise, ID in 1991. He has been writing ever since childhood, and has never stopped. He released his first novel "Blade of the Broken" in 2014.
He has also written short comics for local publishers in Idaho, including Mystery House Comics, and Idaho Comics Group.
When he isn't writing, he is gaming, going on long walks, listening to Heavy Metal, watching movies, and ingesting books like a madman.
Another sad book. I’d rather waste the couple dollars at the dollar tree then purchase any other books written by Jake scholl. This persons whole life seems to be a fantasy. From the two I’ve read this seems like a simple person who watches more anime and tries to write books to prey on simple folks who find the rudimentary dialogue in these fascinating. This is another poor attempt by a poor soul who probably lives with his parents fantasizing about a dream of being a reputation author when in reality he can’t accomplish the simplest tasks within his own life and dreams of being the hero in his own book while being the villian in his own life. Save yourself the hassle and time. Not worth the bargain book store price this will ultimately succumb to.
When King Dagr has visions of his own demise, he awakes only to find more horror. His restlessness leads him outside his room where he discovers the bodies of his men, stabbed with shards of ice. The sorcerer appears before him with claims that Dagr should recognize him. He soon makes the connection. His long lost and unwanted brother has returned, and he want's Dagr's birthright.
There is an object called the demon stone that Degr is ordered to deliver. The task will bestow Degr' birthright upon his brother, in exchange for the life or his beloved wife Anya. Degr has no choice. But can he allow such evil to be triumphant?
Jake Scholl has a vivid imagination. The scenes he creates in Demon Stone are vivid and often full of detail. Demon Stone sometimes lacks certain details that would make the story more powerful, but delivers an imaginative world and a solid main character that makes up for it. The ending of the short story suggests that there will be future tales of Dagr Brightsword and I do look forward to reading them. The short story comes in at around five thousand words and is well worth the .99 price tag.
This was an enjoyable short story. It is very imaginative. I liked the image of the beast. I think the beast could use a little more development. Some parts of the story could also use a few more details to really get a clear picture of what is going on, being felt, or being seen. Otherwise, fabulous book!
This is a great little Novella. Jake does a wonderful job at getting you to like the characters very quickly. I'm sure that the next in this series, which is a full length novel, will be just as engaging.
