Satyajit Ray (Bengali: সত্যজিৎ রায়) was an Indian filmmaker and author of Bengali fiction and regarded as one of the greatest auteurs of world cinema. Ray was born in the city of Calcutta into a Bengali family prominent in the world of arts and literature. Starting his career as a commercial artist, Ray was drawn into independent filmmaking after meeting French filmmaker Jean Renoir and watching Vittorio De Sica's Italian neorealist 1948 film, Bicycle Thieves.

Ray directed 36 films, including feature films, documentaries and shorts. He was also a fiction writer, publisher, illustrator, calligrapher, graphic designer and film critic. He authored several short stories and novels, primarily aimed at children and adolescents.

Ray's first film, Pather Panchali (1955), won eleven international prizes, including Best Human Documentary at the Cannes Film Festival. This film, Aparajito (1956) and Apur Sansar (1959) form The Apu Trilogy. Ray did the scripting, casting, scoring, and editing, and designed his own credit titles and publicity material. Ray received many major awards in his career, including 32 Indian National Film Awards, a number of awards at international film festivals and award ceremonies, and an Academy Award in 1992. The Government of India honoured him with the Bharat Ratna in 1992.

Early Life and Background:
Ray's grandfather, Upendrakishore Ray Chowdhury was a writer, illustrator, philosopher, publisher, amateur astronomer and a leader of the Brahmo Samaj, a religious and social movement in nineteenth century Bengal. Sukumar Ray, Upendrakishore's son and father of Satyajit, was a pioneering Bengali author and poet of nonsense rhyme and children's literature, an illustrator and a critic. Ray was born to Sukumar and Suprabha Ray in Calcutta.

Ray completed his B.A. (Hons.) in Economics at Presidency College of the University of Calcutta, though his interest was always in Fine Arts. In 1940, he went to study in Santiniketan where Ray came to appreciate Oriental Art. In 1949, Ray married Bijoya Das and the couple had a son, Sandip ray, who is now a famous film director.

Literary Works:
Ray created two of the most famous fictional characters ever in Bengali children's literature—Feluda, a sleuth in Holmesian tradition, and Professor Shonku, a genius scientist. Ray also wrote many short stories mostly centered on Macabre, Thriller and Paranormal which were published as collections of 12 stories. Ray wrote an autobiography about his childhood years, Jakhan Choto Chilam (1982). He also wrote essays on film, published as the collections: Our Films, Their Films (1976), Bishoy Chalachchitra (1976), and Ekei Bole Shooting (1979).

Awards, Honors and Recognitions:
Ray received many awards, including 32 National Film Awards by the Government of India. At the Moscow Film Festival in 1979, he was awarded for the contribution to cinema. At the Berlin Film Festival, he was one of only three to win the Silver Bear for Best Director more than once and holds the record for the most Golden Bear nominations, with seven. At the Venice Film Festival, he won a Golden Lion for Aparajito(1956), and awarded the Golden Lion Honorary Award in 1982. In 1992 he was posthumously awarded the Akira Kurosawa Award for Lifetime Achievement in Directing at the San Francisco International Film Festival.

এ গল্পটির ভূমিকা হিসেবে খানিকটা ইতিহাস বলি –

জাহাঙ্গীর যখন মুঘল সাম্রাজ্যের সিংহাসনে, তখন নিজ রাজত্বের স্মারক হিসেবে তিনি বেশ কিছু মুদ্রার প্রচলন ঘটান। কালক্রমে সেগুলোর বেশিরভাগই হারিয়ে গেলেও অল্প কিছু মুদ্রা আজ পর্যন্ত টিকে গিয়ে অত্যন্ত মূল্যবান হয়ে দাঁড়িয়েছে।

'জাহাঙ্গীরের স্বর্ণমুদ্রা' লেখা তেমনই কিছু মুদ্রাকে ঘিরে। – কলকাতার একটি বনেদি পরিবারের সংগ্রহে ছিল রাশিমালার উপর ভিত্তি করে তৈরী জাহাঙ্গীর আমলের বারটি স্বর্ণমুদ্রা – যা আর্থিক ও ঐতিহাসিক, দুই দিক দিয়েই অমূল্য। কিন্তু সেই বাড়িতে একটি পারিবারিক অনুষ্ঠান চলাকালে রহস্যজনকভাবে সেই মুদ্রাগুলির একটি চুরি হয়ে যায়। ঘটনা ঠিক এক বছর পরে বাড়ির কর্তা ফেলুদার শরণাপন্ন হন। তাঁর ইচ্ছে, আরেকবার সেই অনুষ্ঠানটি আয়োজন করে তিনি একই অতিথিদের আবার আমন্ত্রণ করবেন।

পার্থক্য শুধু এই, যে এবার তাতে ফেলুদাও থাকবেন, পরিচয় গোপন করে। উদ্দেশ্য – চোর কে শনাক্ত করে তাঁর কাছ থেকে সেই মুদ্রা ফেরত আনা।

যাকে সবচে কম সন্দেহ হবে, সেই হয় কালপ্রিট। আর যার হাবভাবে চোর চোর ভাব, তাকে শুধু পাঠকের মনোযোগ সরানোর জন্য গল্পে যোগ করা হয়। বেশিরভাগ গোয়েন্দা গল্প এই সূত্র মেনেই চলে, আমরা জানি। তাও ভালোলাগে পড়তে। স্পেশালি সত্যজিৎ রায়ের লেখার গুণে ভ্রমণকাহিনীর মত হয়ে যায় ফেলুদার এডভেঞ্চার। থ্রিলিং।

বইয়ের নামটা শুনলেই চোখে ভেসে ওঠে একটা পুরনো সিন্দুক- যার ঢাকনা খুললে চকমক করে উঠবে মোঘল নবাবদের রত্ন-ভান্ডার। এর সঙ্গে গোয়েন্দা কাহিনী মিলিয়ে বেশ জমজমাট একটা রহস্য এক্সপেক্ট করছিলাম। তবে ফেলুদার সচরাচর বইগুলোর চেয়ে এটা বেশ পানসে লাগলো। প্রথমত, যেই জাহাঙ্গীরের স্বর্ণমুদ্রা তার কোনো ইতিহাস উঠে আসেনি রহস্যের সঙ্গে। দ্বিতীয়ত, রহস্য জমতে না জমতে মনে হলো ২/১ অংকে নাটকটা শেষ হয়ে গেলো। আর অডিও বইয়ে লালমোহনবাবুর চরিত্রে জগন্নাথ বসু এত পারদর্শী কণ্ঠ দেন, উনার রিপ্লেসমেন্ট শুনে মনে হল লালমোহনবাবু চরিত্রটাই অনুপস্থিত।

সবে মিলে বলবো, অল্প সময়ে উপভোগ করার মতো বই। তবে সত্যজিৎ রায় আরো খেল দেখাতে পারতেন।

সত্যজিৎ রায়ের লেখায় জাদু রয়েছে। তার উপস্থাপন শক্তি অসাধারণ।
একটা ভ্রমণ কাহিনীকে কিভাবে গোয়েন্দা কাহিনীতে রূপান্তর করা যায় এক সত্যজিৎ রায় ব্যতীত অন্য কেউ হয়তো করতেই পারবে না।

আফসোসের বিষয় হচ্ছে এখন অব্দি আমার ফেলুদার কোন মুভি দেখাই হয় নাই, ভাবছি এবার একে একে সবগুলো মুভি দেখে ফেলব।

প্রপিতামহ বানোয়ারীলালের সংগ্রহে থাকা বহুমূল্যবান সামগ্রীর মধ্যে একটি হল এক সেট স্বর্ণমুদ্রা। এটির বিশেষত্ব হচ্ছে বারটা রাশি দ্বারা খোদাই করা বার রকম মুদ্রার একটি সেট। এক রাত্রে এর মধ্যে একটি মুদ্রা খোয়া যাওয়ার ফলে ফেলুদা আসেন মঞ্চে।
গল্পটা খুব একটা রহস্যময় না। গল্পের মাঝেই কাহিনি ধরে ফেলেছিলাম।

এই বড়োগল্পটার সঙ্গে আমার প্রথম পরিচয় ঘটেছিল অনেক আগে। পরে এটাকে পড়ি 'ফেলুদা ৩০' উপলক্ষ্যে হওয়া টিভি সিরিজে দেখার পর। তারপর আরও এক-আধবার— কারণ বাদশাহি আংটি-র পর এই আরেকটি গল্প ইতিহাসের রোমাঞ্চর সঙ্গে মিশিয়ে দিয়েছিল প্রাত্যহিক জীবনযাপনের গ্লানিকে। তবে এবার গল্পটা পড়তে গিয়ে আবারও মনে হল, বাস্তবে এমন ভয়ানক নারীবর্জিত আখ্যান কল্পনা করাও অসম্ভব— সে যতই সুলিখিত হোক না কেন।
জানি না আমাদের পরের প্রজন্ম একে কী চোখে দেখবে। আপাতত আমি নস্ট্যালজিয়ার চশমা পরে একে চারটি তারা দিলাম।

শঙ্করবাবুর কাছে ১২ টি জাহাঙ্গীর স্বর্ণমুদ্রা রয়েছে। তার জন্মদিনে সেই মুদ্রা সে তার বন্ধুদের দেখিয়েছিলো। সেখানে রয়েছে ভাই জয়ন্তবাবু, বিজনেস পার্টনার নরেশবাবু, ডাক্তার অর্ধেন্দুবাবু, কালীনাথবাবু। মুদ্রা দেখানোর সময় লোডশেডিং হয়। সেই সময় একটা মুদ্রা যে কোনো একজন চুরি করে। এই জন্মদিনে তাই ফেলুদাকে নিমন্ত্রন করেছে । এই জন্মদিনে আবার স্বর্নমুদ্রা বের করে আনতে যেয়ে জয়ন্তবাবু অজ্ঞান হয়ে যায়। তাকে হাসপাতালে নিয়ে যায় ডাক্তারবাবু। পরে তদন্তে বের হয় যে আসলে অর্ধেন্দুবাবু আর জয়ন্তবাবু মিলিতভাবে চুরি করেছিলো। আর সেই চুরির কথা জেনে তাদের ব্ল্যাকমেইল করতো কালীনাথবাবু। আর জয়ন্তবাবু অজ্ঞান হওয়ার ভান করে পুরো ১২ টা স্বর্ণমুদ্রা সরানোর প্ল্যান করেছিলো। কিন্তু ফেলুদা তা আগেই বুঝতে পেরে, রাতে সেই স্বর্ণমুদ্রা রাতেই সরিয়ে রেখেছিলো।

ইতিহাসের পাতায় জাহাঙ্গীরের নাম মানেই শিল্পরুচি, আভিজাত্য আর অনন্য মুদ্রাশিল্পের স্মৃতি। তাঁর শাসনামলে রাশিচক্রের প্রতীক খোদাই করা বারোটি স্বর্ণমুদ্রা আজ কেবল রাজকীয় ঐতিহ্যের নয়, ইতিহাসেরও দুর্লভ সাক্ষ্য।

কলকাতার এক বনেদি পরিবারের কাছে ছিল এমনই এক অমূল্য মুদ্রা��ংগ্রহ। কিন্তু এক পারিবারিক অনুষ্ঠানের ভিড়ে, হাসি-আড্ডার আড়ালে, হারিয়ে যায় একটি মুদ্রা। বছর ঘুরে ফিরে আসে সেই অস্থিরতা, এবার পরিবারের কর্তা ফেলুদার শরণাপন্ন। পরিকল্পনা, একই আয়োজন, একই অতিথি, কিন্তু এক অদৃশ্য অতিথি বাড়তি, ফেলুদা, ছদ্মবেশে।

ইতিহাসের ধুলো জমা ধন মেলে ধরবে না শুধু সৌন্দর্য, বরং উন্মোচন করবে মানুষের লোভ, বিশ্বাসঘাতকতা আর মনস্তত্ত্বের সূক্ষ্ম ফাঁদ।

গল্পটা ছোট সই, কিন্তু ভালো। গল্পের ক্যারেক্টারের সংখ্যা কম, কিন্তু তাতে গল্পের ফ্লো কিংবা সাসপেন্স কোনোটাই নষ্ট হয়নি। সাধাসিধে প্লট, কিন্তু বুদ্ধিদীপ্ত লেখা। পুরোটা কাহিনী একটা বাড়িকে কেন্দ্র করেই।
সত্যজিৎ রায়ের লেখার তুলনা হয়না।
