(1923– 2003) was one of the popular Hindi magazine story writers of the 20th century and a pioneer in writing Indian women based fiction. She was awarded the Padma Shri for her contribution to Hindi literature in 1982. Almost all of her works are in print today and widely available across India.

She garnered a massive following in the pre-television 60s and 70s, as her literary works were serialised in Hindi magazines like Dharmayug and Saptahik Hindustan, and in TV serials n films.

Upon her death in 2003, Government of India described her contributions to Hindi literature as, “…in the death of Shivani the Hindi literature world has lost a popular and eminent novelist and the void is difficult to fill”

शिवानी जी की जादूई कलम से उकेरी गई हैं यह मर्मस्पर्शी कथाएं। इसमें चार छोटी कहानियां संग्रहीत हैं।
१. 'पूतोंवाली' एक ऐसी स्त्री की विडम्बना भरी गाथा है, जो पांच-पांच पुत्रों की मां होकर भी अंत तक निपूती रही।
२. दूसरी कहानी 'कैंजा' है। 'कैंजा' यानी सौतेली मां, यह एक ऐसी युवती की मार्मिक कथा है जो जन्मदात्री मां न होने पर भी अपने सौतेले बेटे से सच्चा प्रेम करती है।
३. 'विषकन्या' इस संग्रह की तीसरी कहानी है जो दो यकसाँ जुड़वाँ बहनों की मार्मिक कहानी और उनमें से एक के ईर्ष्या से सुलगते जीवन की केंद्रीय विडंबना, जो स्पर्शमात्र से ही किसी के जीवन में कोलाहल मचा देती है।
४. चौथी और अंतिम कहानी है 'तीसरा बेटा'। इस कहानी में बताया गया है कैसे सावित्री(जिसके दोनों बेटे विदेश चले जाते हैं और वहां बस गए हैं), को एक यात्रा के दौरान ट्रेन में लावारिस बच्चा मिलता है और(पुत्रों के मना करने के बाद भी उसे अपने साथ रखती है, उसका लालन-पालन करती है) और वही बेटा सावित्री के अन्तिम दिनों में उसके साथ रहता है।
लोकप्रिय लेखिका की कलम से यह एक और मार्मिक कथा है।

In my opinion, even if common people never get to write autobiographies their stories will still be found in the pages of hindi writing. This is written for generations that are older than me by atleast 20-30 years. It is an insight into their life and thoughts as they go through life alone with their partner, have kids, make them what they are today, help them stand up on their on two feet and watch them leave their nest, thus eventually ending up all alone again. This is a beautiful piece of writing that makes me a little sad. My generation is just the arrogant and ungrateful one in these books and I can understand where the older generations are coming from. I missed my grandfather and grandmother so much while reading this book. I wish we could have read more books together.

शिवानी जी कुछ लिखें और वो अच्छा ना हो, ऐसा हो ही नहीं सकता. काफ़ी लंबे समय से ये कथा-संग्रह पढ़ना चाह रहे थे, परंतु मौका नहीं लग रहा था. इस पुस्तक में 4 कहानियाँ हैं जो अपने आप में एक समीक्षा मांगती हैं. अगर आपको अपने मन के गहनतम घाटों तक पहुँचना है, इस भाग-दौड़ भरी ज़िंदगी में कुछ पलों के लिए ही सही पर भावनाओं को ख़ुद पर हावी होने देना है, और स्वयं के मनुष्य होने का प्रमाण पाना है तो शिवानी जी की रचनाओं को ज़रूर पढ़िए.
