AN EROTIC DARK FANTASY FROM THE AUTHOR OF DRIFTER'S BLUES
WARNING: This book contains graphic depictions of sexual acts, and is for adults over the age of eighteen years only.
Rafaella "Rafe" Creed isn't your typical private investigator. She tracks down members of the undead. And sends them back where they came from.
When Letitia DeVane, a wealthy suburban housewife, hires Rafe to find out if her husband is a vampire, it looks like a straightforward case. Because Rafe has rules, three of them, which she uses to establish the humanity or otherwise of her targets. And the Rules never fail.
But Oscar DeVane is different. Trapping him with the Rules proves more problematic than usual. And at the same time, Rafe finds herself falling wildly, disconcertingly in lust with him...
By turns suspenseful, passionately erotic and blackly comic, RAFE'S RULES is a 10,000-word tale of sex, death and greed with an unexpected twist.
Because even vampires are subject to temptation...

Before I get into the meat of this review I would like to congratulate Ms. Tallis on writing a short story that has a beginning, middle and, wonders of all wonders, an ending. This should not be at all notable, but I have read SOOO many stories lately that don't end. They're either serials or just cliffhangers. Drives me nuts. So, thank you Ms. Tallis for ending this. It just proves that it can be done, even for stories that have sequels. Where I might otherwise have called this a 3 star read, I ADDED a star for the blessing of an ending.
As for the rest of the story I rather enjoyed Rafe as a character. She was a hard drinking, hardass of a woman who was willing to do whatever need be to get a job done. I thought some of her risks ridiculous, but it was still a fun read. I have to admit that her narrative style wore on me, however. There were just too many asides to the reader for my taste. For the most, though, part I don't consider my time to have been wasted.
I really only had one issue with this, but that issue kept me from giving this 4 stars, because it bothered me so much.
Over-explaining. The character likes to pause and address the reader, with awkward and captain obvious style explanations. It's just unnecessary, and the story would be better without. Just show it, dude. No need to tell.
For example on the first page:
"She looked up sharply, as if - forgive me if I sound crude, it's just my style - as if someone in a distant room had farted."
That line would have been much funnier without the middle part. I mean, I still laughed (because, come on) but it would have read so much better without, you know?
So yeah. Unfortunately, it hit one of my big pet peeves with books, otherwise this would have been 4 stars fo' sho. The MC is kick ass and not fucking around. Well, she does fuck around some in another way, but you know what I mean.
This book was a really quick read but didn't have enough depth to be considered good. I would have liked to know more about the main character and how she got started in the vampire killing game.
This was a very interesting short story. If you are into action filled short stories then this is one for you. I enjoyed it very much and I am sure you will also
