Three months and hundreds of years later, I finished this pocket history of the United States. I literally found in a trash can. It was first published in 1942, and was renewed at various times since then; the edition I read is 1986, with Carter and Reagan getting scant coverage (although Carter's place in history already seemed to be firmly set in 1986). If you are looking for a modern history of the United States, this probably shouldn't be the book you pick up. What's interesting about this book is the study of history itself, and how over time, what's important to historians changes. The pro-labor slant of this book is evident again and again; the entire progressive era is one big chapter on the push Labor made against the Gilded Age plutocracy. If you are looking for diversity, you're going to be disappointed; there is much "red man" terminology when referring to Native Americans, also the empty new world concept (See1491: New Revelations of the Americas Before Columbus for a look how the world was neither new nor particularly empty). African Americans and civil rights get scant attention until the 1960s, and even then it's not as in depth as I think a modern history (or text book) would make. All that said, there is some beautiful passages here, particularly the beginning. These authors - Allan Nevins, Henry Steele Commager, Jeffery Morris (whoever they may be) clearly love the United States in that old fashioned, flag waving, admirable patriotic sort of way. You know they dressed up in tricorns and muskets in 1976 (and probably before). The writing becomes more factual and dryer as the book progresses, but there are still some stirring phrases every so often (democracy verses totalitarianism is one such passage). I would not recommend this to anyone other than a student of history, and perhaps I should say a student of historians. But if you want to see how writing about the United States has changed over the last 75 years or so, pop this in your pocket for some fun reading.

This book is one the best reading choices i've made in a long while. I had not read any American history since i was in high school, and i could not have cared less about it then (sorry H.S. teachers, it was not your fault). Re-reading history as a grown adult is a whole different experience. The relevance of persons, events and policies is much clearer after living the majority of your adult life interacting with the results and consequences of them. I have come up with a list of presidents i want to read more about: Jefferson, Wilson, FDR. And as dysfunctional as things seem at this moment of our history, i have learned that we have been there before and somehow survived. Therefore, i come away with a sense of hope that somehow, once again, the American spirit that created this amalgamation of peoples will show the path out of this, yet another, dark chapter in our history. Moving on from this book, i'll read Howard Zinn's classic "A People's History of the United States" next, then some books related to my favorite president list. Here's hoping we are not too far gone to survive.

Writing a pocket history of any nation is a tremendous task I'm sure, but I think a better title would involve "brick" and not "pocket." The only pocket thing about this book is the surface area of the front and back covers. Without including the suggested reading lists and the index, this puppy's page count is 656. That being said, it is about 50% interesting reading and about 50% grinding out the pages so you can finish it and call it done. But I find this to be true of many large histories that cover large swaths of time and are not as niche-focused.
This book was assigned reading in my college, which I did not even come close to finishing in my school days because of extracurricular activities (preparing for marriage and life after graduation). But I decided recently to pick it up and finish my assignment, albeit 22 years too late. I'm glad I did.
There are numerous nuggets of insight and wisdom scattered throughout, and even though the authors are political liberals and I am not, I did find that I agreed with many of their conclusions.
Near the end of the book is written: "As late as the Progressive Era, most, if not all, leading men in public life could deal with ideas, compose grammatical sentences, and speak articulately. An election such as that in 1912 brought forth as presidential candidates in the general election a leading political scientist and educator (Woodrow Wilson), an able historian and naturalist (Theodore Roosevelt), and a good jurist and first-rate administrator (William Howard Taft). Today elections are characterized by negative advertising and sound bites; the "presidential debates" by the rote recitation of 60-to-120 second memorized statements that don't always bear a close relation to the question propounded."
The words were written around 1992, and they are even more true today. It truly is tragic that a nation of such wealth and opportunity is witnessing the extinction of the noble statesman - a creature whose death is perpetrated by a blood-thirsty media, a myopic public, a narcissistic upper class, a desperate right, and a witch-hunting left.
It is dangerous to read history with rose-colored glasses, but it is equally dangerous to cashier the giants upon whose shoulders we stand. It is dangerous to be so focused on the sins of our fathers that we cannot see - will not see - the veritable treasury of virtues and admirable qualities that furnished them the vision and fortitude they needed to found a nation and lead it into better days. We may congratulate ourselves for not having stained our mittens with the moral deficiencies of previous generations, but in reality we have only switched the mittens around. We've traded prejudice for pride, bigotry for indulgence, exploitation for entitlement. We are more educated but less enlightened, more blessed but less grateful, and more accoutred but less industrious.
After finishing this tome about American history, I can't help but think of that slogan made famous by the Virginia Slims cigarette company: "You've come a long way, baby!" We have come a long way - in good ways and bad ways. But during this election season, it's hard not to focus on the bad ways.

This book often referred to Native Americans as "savages". It also glosses over the gruesome genocide of the indigenous peoples inhabiting the continent as well as the absolute atrocity that was slavery in the United States. The authors seem to want to paint genocide and slavery as necessary steps in the pursuit of liberty and justice. They bend over backwards and then back around again in order to make excuses for some of the most blatant acts of aggression and racism. Skip this book and read Howard Zinn's A People's History of The United States.

This is a great wrap up of the American History from 1776 to the 1960's. It gives you a brief summary of the events in the perspctive of a historian. It also shows you the different perspectives of the different sides of the conflicts. I reallly enjoyed the book for all of the information packed into such a samll looking book. I found it really practical to any student. I recommend this to any student.

Hatta zencilere oy hakkı verilmesini “eğitimsiz afrika vahşilerine böyle bir hak verilmesinin dehşete düşürücü” olduğu gibi bir yorum da vardı ancak açık fikirli olmak için kendimi zorlayarak birkaç sayfa daha devam ettim.

Bir film ile değil de, o akıcılıkta, ayrıntıları gözardı etmeden ve öykü okur gibi Amerika Tarihi öğrenilmek isteniyorsa, bu kitap pek uygun. uzun tasvirler ve subjektif değerlendirmeler sıkıcı olmaktan uzak. hatta bazen pek eğlenceli:)

Kitabın bütüncül bir şekilde ABD tarihini vermesi güzel ancak bazı bölümlerde fazlaca yanlı yorumların bulunması beni biraz rahatsız etti.

Kitap ABD tarihini ilk kolonilerin yerleşmesinden alıp Japonya'nın 2.DS sonunda atom bombalarının küllerinden beyaz bayrak çekmesine kadar anlatıyor. Çok derine inmeden, akademik amaçlarla yazılmamış bir kitap. Bu yüzden çoğu bölümü rahat ve keyifli bir şekilde okunuyor. Yüzeysel olsa da tüm Amerikan tarihini kronolojik bir biçimde ve Türkçe olarak okumak gerçekten güzel ve değerli. Zira ABD tarihindeki olayları farklı kaynaklardan az çok biliyor olsam da aradaki bağlantıları kurmakta zorlandığım yerler bolca mevcuttu. Bu kitap tam da bu eksiği gideriyor. Kaynakça bulunmaması biraz düşündürse de yazarların ve çevirmeni Halil İnalcık'ın dönemlerinin saygın tarihçileri olması bu durumu kendi adıma kabul edilebilir kılıyor.
Kitabı Amerikan emperyalizmi eleştirisi okumak amacıyla eline alanlar ziyadesiyle hayal kırıklığı yaşayacak, bunu da belirtmek gerek. Her ne kadar yazarlar ABD'nin hatalı kararlarını zaman zaman irdelese ve bazı eleştirilerde bulunsa da yayılmacı politikasına ve katıldığı savaşlara karşı çıkmıyor, zencilerin ve yerlilerin çilelerine neredeyse değinilmiyor (Doğu Batı yayınlarının Amerikan yerlisi bulunan kötü kapak seçimi de değinmeye değer. Ne alakası var bu kitapla, Amerikan Devrimi'ni koy, iç savaştan bir şey koy. Bu hali sadece yanıltıcı). Ancak burada kitabın 1950'lerin Soğuk Savaş atmosferinde yazıldığı ve ABD'nin o yıla kadar katıldığı savaşlarda daha kuvvetli bir meşru zemin sahibi olduğunu hatırlamakta fayda var. ABD'nin mazlum halklarının hak arama mücadelelerine de yazım yılı itibariyle hala vakit var. Bu yüzden kitaba yeterince "PC" değil diye burun kıvırmak biraz işin özünü kaçırmak gibi olacaktır diye düşünüyorum.
Sonuç olarak bu görece genç devlet onları beğenip beğenmememizden bağımsız bir biçimde son birkaç yüzyıldır dünyanın gidişatını değiştiriyor. Buna rağmen onlar hakkında ülkemizde hayret verici azlıkta okuma yapılıyor, çok az popüler tarih kitabı basılıyor, başarılarının sebepleri yeterince irdelenmiyor diye düşünüyorum. Tarihçilerin Kutbu sayılan Halil İnalcık Hoca’nın çevirisi olması sebebiyle aldığım bir kitap.Halil İnalcık önsözü kitaba okuyucuyu hazırlıyor.
Özellikle kitabın yarısına kadar çok fazla isim geçiyor. Coğrafi ad isimleri, politikacıların isimler, o döneme etki etmiş kişilerin isimleri…vs. Biraz aşina olmak gerekli tam randıman alabilmek için. Olaylar o kadar hızlı bir akış halide aktarılıyor ki kitap tarihsel akışı, kronolojiyi yakalamak hiç kolay değil. Sadece ABD Tarihi değil hatta İngiltere Tarihi’ni bile az çok bilmek gerekiyor.
Özellikle ilave bir coğrafi bilgi de gerekiyor Amerika kıtasının dağlarına, ovalarına, vadilerine kadar uzanan bilgi dağarcığıyla yapılan bir okuma daha faydalı olur. Çünkü bir süre sonra bu kadar coğrafi bölge …vs isimleri bilinmediği için bıktırmaya başlıyor.
Kitabın yarısından sonra daha akıcı bir hal alıyor kitap. Özellikle 1800 lü yılların sonu ile okuma kolaylaşıyor. Büyük Buhran (The Great Depression) kısmı özellikle çok iyi tasvir edilmiş. Canlı bir aktarım yaşatıyor kitap.
Bu kitap bildiğim kadarıyla ABD Tarihi’ni kendi liselerinde öğrencilerine okutulan müfredatta olan bir kitap diye biliyorum. Tarafsız bir tarih kitabı olmasını umarken maalesef oldukça taraflı yazılmış olduğu ayan beyan bir kitap okudum. Yarı Tarih-Yarı Propaganda kitabı olarak nitelendirilebilir. ABD’de liselerde okutulması, kitabın devlet eliyle de desteklenmiş olması kanısını da güçlendiriyor. Örneğin; tarafsız bir tarih kitabından beklentimiz ‘’Kızılderili’’ lerin de tarihini hatta Afrika’dan getirilen kölelerin hikayelerini de tarafsız bir şekilde aktarabiliyor olması idi. Ancak kapaktaki Kızılderili resminden başka Kızılderililerin tarihi ile ilgili düzgün bir bilgi kitapta yok. Kapak resmi ise Türkiye’de satışları arttırmak için kullanılan bir taktik olduğu kanısı uyandırıyor. Kitapta esamesi okunmayan Kızılderili resmini kitabın kapağı yapmak?!?...
Sonuç olarak; ABD Tarihi için kült kitap olarak nitelendirilen bir kitap ve okunması gereken bir kitap. ABD Tarihi’ni kronolojik sıraya göre aktarmayı başarmış. Ancak yukarıda yazdıklarımı da göz önünde bulundurunuz.

Kapak resmi ise Türkiye’de satışları arttırmak için kullanılan bir taktik olduğu kanısı uyandırıyor. Kitapta esamesi okunmayan Kızılderili resmini kitabın kapağı yapmak?!?...
Sonuç olarak; ABD Tarihi için kült kitap olarak nitelendirilen bir kitap ve okunması gereken bir kitap. ABD Tarihi’ni kronolojik sıraya göre aktarmayı başarmış. Ancak yukarıda yazdıklarımı da göz önünde bulundurunuz.

ABD tarihini ilk kolonilesme doneminden baslatip 1950 lere kadar Haalil Inalcik in harika cevirisiyle akici bir uslupta toparlayip onemli evrelerini ogrenebileceginiz ve daha sonraki arastirmalariniza bir giris olacak guzel bir tarih kitabi, genelde tarafsiz gibi gorunuyor fakat yerli halka ait bilgiler az ve ozellikle kitabin borkac bolumunda Afrika kokenlilere biraz onyargiyla olumsuz bir bakis var.

İkinci dünya savaşı ve sonrası (kitap yazılana kadar olan dönem) daha detaylı ele alınsa daha ilgi çekici olurdu benim açımdan. İlk kuruluş yıllarının fazlaca detaylı olması ve bu dönemde rol oynayan yüzlerce isim bir yerden sonra sıkıcı olmaya başlıyor.

I really, really, wanted to like this. I'm so bad at remembering any sort of history. I was looking for a book that would be more entertaining than all the awful history lectures I had to listen to in school, and this was not that. I'll keep looking.

The book is one of the most informative and educaitonal books I have ever read. The book features text from when the first settlers came to North America to Ronald Reagans Presidency and everything in between. Also at the end there is a list of biographies related to history. I love history and memorizing the presidents. I learned that Abe Lincoln was 6'4", the tallest president in history and James Buchannan was the only president to remain a bachelor his entire life. There are so many details in the book that you are garunteed to learn something! So grab the book at your nearest bookstore and start reading!

Se hace un recorrido muy breve de la historia de Estados Unidos de América hasta la administración de Einsenhower. La parte de la conformación de las trece colonias y la paulatina expansión hacia el oeste me pareció muy interesante y la mejor documentada del texto, con datos incluso de la cultura de los pobladores originarios que ya habitaban en lo que hoy es ese país (aunque se refiere a ellos con términos peyorativos, quizá como producto del entorno temporal de los autores). Haber leído sobre su historia me brindó información general de cómo llegó a ser lo que es hoy dicho país (desconocía muchos datos) y me deja con una apreciación distinta de dicha nación.

Exactly as the title suggests, this is a very compact history of our great country. It would be a great resource for anyone taking a general American history course.

After a couple of blatantly racist chapters--in which the authors are thankful for the fact that the "savages" are not very smart--this book picks up. In fact, I learned quite a bit.
