Lisette Marshall is a fantasy romance author, language nerd and cartography enthusiast. Having grown up on a steady diet of epic fantasy, regency romance and cosy mysteries, she now writes steamy, swoony stories with a generous sprinkle of murder.

Lisette lives in the Netherlands (yes, below sea level) with her boyfriend and the few house plants that miraculously survive her highly irregular watering regime. 4.5 unexpected stars!

What the hell did I just read? An exciting, intriguing and well-developed steamy story of spies and subterfuge with just a hint of darkness, and a unique romance that is full of chemistry. It’s the first in a brand new series by new author, Lisette Marshall, and I loved it!

19-year-old Viviette is the crown princess of the Peaks. She has just returned from three years away where she suffered through a vapid existence of balls, gowns, gossip, and ‘training’ to be a lady. Now she’s home and desperate to become a valued part of her kingdom’s future, if only her father would stop looking at her as if she’s still a little girl. Her return home coincides with a visit from representatives of two neighbouring countries threatening war; there are secret plots and dangerous games unfolding, and she is determined to get to the bottom of what is going on.

Broody and enigmatic Jaghar is the king’s Spymaster, and he knows all that goes on within the kingdom. The return of the princess means he’s responsible for the security and protection of the girl, and it’s the last thing he needs as he tries to uncover the latest threat to his king. Vivi and Jaghar do not get along. He is around ten years older than her, and still thinks of her as the irritating little girl who used to constantly ask him questions – something he does not have the time or patience for. But his eyes are very quickly opened to the fact that she’s all grown up, and as she throws herself into the court intrigue, right into the path of danger, he figures the best way to protect her is to work with her.

Copper Coast might have perfected the surface of the meek, polite lady, but underneath that mask it had crafted something far more dangerous, something angry and determined – she had learned to recognize her limitations and, worse, to work around them.

And so the stage is set for all that is to come. But don’t go into this book expecting a hearts and flowers romance, because this book is not that. It’s a dark world where sex isn’t sacred, it’s for pleasure, and it’s a weapon, used to elicit secrets and information, and none do it better than the Spymaster and his service of loyal spies who essentially whore themselves out to specific targets, before coercing them into talking in the quiet of night.

Vivi is thrilled to join Jaghar’s service – not only to finally be useful as something other than decoration, but to give her the opportunity to openly (yet secretly) explore her sexuality, which is something she’s been desperate for. And who better to show her the way than the Spymaster himself who, in all of his broody intensity, is sexy as all hell and all too willing to personally introduce her to his world.

“I don’t think I’ll ever find the words to tell you how much I want you.”

It may sound heartless, but the chemistry is there, and we all know that more is slowly brewing between the two of them. But Jaghar and Vivi both have jobs to do, and they do it without question. For those who want details - . It may not be your conventional romance, but just know that I’m a mad fan of swoony, all-consuming romance, and I was completely ok with everything that went down with them. It’s a different world, they’re both consenting adults and they’re both accepting of everything that happens, and oh, holy God, it’s hot! But I was still thrilled when we start to see things shift between them as those feelings start to emerge.

“What do you feel, Spymaster?”
“Too much.”

But in the meantime, there is a plot to uncover, and when the king himself becomes the target, they’ll need to work hard and fast to find the bad guy and bring them down.

I really enjoyed this book. It’s fast paced, exciting and intriguing, and Vivi and Jaghar are wonderful characters. She is bold and brave, with a thirst to experience everything and truly live, which is a great contract to Jaghar who is cold and ruthless. He has been emotionally scarred by his past, and he has some issues to overcome, but when Vivi comes into his life, she pretty much turns it upside down. Both are intelligent and witty, their banter is fantastic, I loved seeing them clash, argue and tease, and those moments where Vivi made Jaghar smile, and even laugh, felt like a small triumph. It was gorgeous watching them come together, and I’m really excited for the possibilities of this potential powerhouse couple.

This book is ‘historical fantasy romance’. There’s no fantasy yet, except for some vague mention of witches, magic and dragons, but it has that historical, distant feel of a fantasy series with the story taking place in a different world, and the names all hinting at the fantastical. I look forward to seeing how it all develops.

It’s clever, and so well written, and I was hooked from start to finish. The book ends in a good place, though there is definitely more story to be told, and I can’t wait for more!

4.5 stars.

4 - ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Velvet is the first installment in the Princess and the Spy, a steamy fantasy romance trilogy following a sizzling forbidden romance between a Princess and a Spymaster.

This is the perfect treat if you're in the mood for a quick spicy fantasy romance!

What to expect from this book?

— Enemies to Lovers
— Forbidden Romance
— Princess x Spymaster
— A curious, rebellious heroine in control of her sexuality
— A brooding and experienced hero
— Steamy fantasy romance
— Adult Fairytale
— Political intrigue
— Spies
— Secret passages
— Witty characters
— Banter
— Generous amount of sexy times and seduction

Crown Princess Viviette returns home from a foreign court, ready to take on her duties and do what she must to protect her father and Kingdom, even if it means she must enter into a partnership with the enigmatic and cold Spymaster, Jaghar.

There is a looming war on the horizon and the last thing Jaghar needs is to deal with a rebellious Crown Princess determined to tangle herself up in deadly political schemes. She is no longer the little girl he remembers and can simply ignore, for Viviette is prepared to join his network of spies to uncover any threats and evil schemes made to kill her father—even if it means becoming a spy will require her honing the deadliest weapon known to man—seduction.

I enjoyed the story for what it offered: a forbidden partnership and a sexually charged chemistry between an unlikely duo and lots of political intrigue. It's also always refreshing to see a heroine taking control of her sexuality.

I definitely look forward to continue this trilogy!

Trigger Warnings: attempted sexual assault, child abuser and implied ped*philia, explicit content.

This story has all the elements I love in a fantasy romance - fascinating characters, political intrigue, and excellent sexytimes! The premise is unusual with a princess who takes control of her sexuality and an enigmatic spymaster who is tortured and heroic. Very much enjoyed and recommend!

The perfect balance of pleasure and plot.

I devoured this book in six hours. A sincere thank you to the author who offered me an ARC in exchange for an honest review. It was such an easy, enjoyable read – exactly what I needed.

Honestly, I thought it was going to be too young for me - it is about a princess after all. But I couldn’t have been more wrong. There is lots of adult content (that is very well written).

In fact, the whole book is well written with very little mistakes. The prologue is the only part that felt a little flat to me. And I wouldn’t say no to more drama.

Viviette is such a likeable character. She is passionate, intelligent, and independent. She is a princess with a purpose, and no way is she letting anyone stop her.

I hated Jaghar the first two times we were introduced to him. He just seemed so cold and judgemental. But it seems I judged him too quick - he gets interesting, I promise!

The romance between them is great, I think I’m just a little disappointed that I'll definitely be reading book two though ❤️❤️❤️

Also, TRIGGER WARNING for chapter 15 >

Oh for crying out loud.

Viviette is a 19 year old super bright princess of a kingdom where the supposedly amazingly great spymaster has decided that the best and right and only way to conduct spycraft is to start and run a brothel in the royal palace. Everyone except the king knows about this.

Seriously. Everyone.

All of the kingdom's enemies, certainly. And somehow, they tell state secrets when they fuck people. Because they are also idiots.

The princess ends up wanting to join in, so she ends up being a literal prostitute for her kingdom, but really the story is about her sex with the spymaster dude. The sex is unrealistic and frothy and... weirdly uncompelling.

All the sex, all the time. The sex scenes are very clearly the focus of the story.

aayyooooo why the fuck is no one talking about the fact that this book is literally named after the FMCs coochie???

you know how books will name drop the title somewhere in the prose?? got me pointing at my kindle going “oh!!! there it is!!!” except this time, when the author title dropped, i GASPED. the first use of the word velvet is when the FMC asks the MMC what she feels like *wink wink* and he audibly says “like velvet.” Oh, but IM NOT DONE! he then proceeds to give her a stupid nickname (as all romance books do nowadays) and guess what it is!!!?? ding ding ding!!!! he calls her fucking VELVET. HUHH?????!!!! HELLLOOO??? 🚓🚨💢🚨💢🚨💢🚨
idk like that is criminal behavior to me ✨personally✨

still enjoyed the book tho lmao

I finished this book in 4 hours, but I'll be thinking about it for the next 4 weeks. Usually, when I read ebooks I have to take frequent breaks to avoid headaches, but I couldn't tear my eyes away from the screen the whole time I was reading this book.

The sizzling chemistry between the lead characters and the steamy scenes had me all hot and bothered. I couldn't decide if I should swoon or try to focus on the mystery.

The characters had depth, which helped me connect with them. Viviette was a strong and level-headed person, who knew what she wanted and was determined to get it. I was relieved that her personality did not change after she fell for Jaghar. Many books portray women as badasses in the beginning, but when the male lead comes into the picture, they become damsels in distress. Luckily, that wasn't the case here.

Jaghar was perfect! I love my tortured heroes, and I can happily say that I have a new book boyfriend. He was stern, but at the same time could be vulnerable when he wanted to be.

I enjoyed the suspense, the twists, and the revelations throughout the book. I like that even though the story would be continued in the next book, this one did not end in a cliffhanger. I was immensely satisfied with the way everything turned out, and I'm eager to see what challenges the characters face in the next book.

I recommend this book to readers who love the enemies-to-lovers trope, broken male leads, lots of spice, and some mystery. Don't miss out on this gem!

I don't usually read historical romances but I love this author and wanted a light quick read .

Met Viviette, the princess from the Peaks, she comes back after being away 3 years in another Kingdom to perfect her skills to someday become a Queen .

She has to again endure the Spymaster from the Kingdom , who after 3 years continues to be a bastard with no feelings who still treats her like a child.

The book takes place in the stuart era, not totally historical because is a fantasy world, so maybe we can call it a fantasy historical 😅 But yes there are no faes, wings or whatsoever. ( they mention dragons🐉 thou!!)

This is a very dirrrty and spicy book . If you are a fantasy romance reader you may be out of your comfort zone with this one, but if you are used to reading dark romance and trigger warning is your second name you will enjoy it 😁.

It is a quick read, with only 217 pages , I was afraid being spicy the plot and worldbuilding was going to be weak but I liked it and the story was intriguing !

Court politics, betrayals , mystery and an easter egg for people who read her other series "Iron" . I didn't know both were placed in the same universe and was a nice surprise !

I loved that Viviette wasn't afraid of taking matters in her own hand and she clearly knows what she wants 💅

As usual with this author, her female characters are bossy, badass and totally in control of the situation..until they aren't 🤣

I love how she balances this between the love interest and the MC.

( She is not afraid of ORDERING Jaghar and is so funny seeying him go crazy about her .🤭 )

If you are looking for an extra spicy historical/fantasy romance with a lot of TW this is the book for you 🥰

It wasn't bad ! The characters are great, especially Viviette. But Jaghar changed so suddenly it was hard to follow his train of thoughts.

Also, we get no world building at all. It took me until 40% to figure out if there is magic in the world and what was Jaghar's age (I swear I had to do math).

Also, can we talk about the first smutty when the FMC looses her v*rginity ? The MMC literally says " I won't hurt you. That's the excuse of lazy man". Like I guess he's not entirely wrong but also it's supposed to hurt unless the h*men already teared up (gym, tampons) ? But nooooooo, the FMC wants it rough and never feel any pain and has like two big O's 😒

I HATE it when books do that.

The premise looked great, sadly the execution lacked a bit. I will not be continuing with this series.

DNF at 36%. Tried to read this last winter! But something about this truly grates. I'm finding the tone of the story not jiving with what I want as a romance reader. A little too seriously and navel-gazing n areas Idc about it while not having fun with the opportunities the plot presents itself.

I honestly can't remember the last time I devoured a book so fast.

Velvet was such a delightful mix of everything I love in a story: secrets, snark, romance, castles, political intrigue, and I'm sure I could go on. The main couple, Viviette and Jaghar, were perfectly balanced for one another, and I really enjoyed being in each of their heads: they were equally interesting and each brought their own strengths to the table. The pacing was fast, but it worked great in such a short novel, and also helped to drive home my personal favorite aspect...

The stakes felt real. I read lots of romance and it's often painfully obvious to me how much plot armor the main couple wears (because they have to in order for there to be a HEA)...but not so with Velvet! With all the tension and mystery shrouding the enemy, there was never a single point where I felt like Viviette or Jaghar couldn't potentially fall prey.

I'd give more than 5 stars if I could and wish to read the rest immediately please!

What a sexy read! Enemies to lovers, historical romantic fantasy that hooked me from the start. This is the sort of book that makes you wish you didn't have other responsibilities in life. I couldn't put it down, especially when our cunning Princess shared a scene with the dark, broody, sexually experienced spymaster Jaghar. Buckets of steam in this read not for the faint of heart (I loved it but maybe explicit steam is not for you). Marshall built us a world full of intrigue, secret passageways, and clandestine meetings between two forbidden lovers who have partnered together to uncover a plot against their king. I picked this book up as an ARC reader and now I'm a squealing fan-girl for Marshall. Can't wait for Leather.

The spy thing is so ridiculous... Spymaster deciding that the princess should work as prostitute only because he saw her kiss a dude and get from him some vague and super obvious intel. Everyone doing the deed without any protection. Eh. Expected more from this story, looked so promising. DNF

A quick "enemies to lovers" novel set in a medievalesque fantasy world. Princess Viviette teams up with the Spymaster, Jaghar, in order to learn more about the plot to assassinate her father and the assassin behind this plot. As they work together, they slowly fall for one another as they learn more about one another.

The romance between the characters was undermine by the undeniable amount of poor communication between them. While the romance drove the plot, the greatest conflict faced by Vivette and Jaghar was the miscommunication between them, which was ultimately caused by the lack of honest communication between them. You know the part where the characters confess their love for each other? Yeah, that would have saved our princess and spymaster a lot of trouble.

For a short book, this felt rather long for the first three quarters of the book. The last quarter was fast and intriguing though!

The only reason why I picked this book back up after a year was because I want to finish every book on my currently reading list. This book was fine, the concept is nice, but I really didn't like the last chapters and the rushed ending with the quick backstory of the MC which is actually awful and extremely traumatic. I think I would've liked the story better without the choice of backstory, other backstories could've been more impactful instead of just really emotionally heavy in the worst way.

"Velvet" is the first in a new romantic fantasy series by author Lisette Marshall. Actually, no dragons, monsters and fairies, but a lot of political intrigue, abundant doses of espionage and a love story that proves to be intense and, why not say, slightly dangerous. Viviette is the princess of Peaks, one of the five kingdoms that make up the world created by Lisette. As a princess, she must remain concerned only with amenities and prepare for an arranged marriage. But Viviette is not like other girls in her social class: she understands the political implications of royalty and wants to help her kingdom and her father, who is threatened with death by hidden enemies. Thus, Viviette convinces the chief spy of the kingdom, the relentless and seductive Jaghar, to let her infiltrate as a spy and investigate who is seeking the death of the King of Peaks.
With the investigations going on, Viviette and Jaghar get involved; she discovers that he is not the cold, insensitive guy he appears to be, and he realizes that she is a smart and adorable girl. The result is a passion that defies the rules of the world in which they live, but that they will be more than willing to experience.
I really fell in love with Viviette and Jaghar and the form like their relationship is building. They learn to trust each other, a confidence that is of their bodies and minds. The Jaghar’s lessons in seduction are very hot, but one can see he is totally devoted to the princess and could never hurt hers in any way.
I like the idea of an espionage’s brothel in the palace, it is very intriguing and adventurous. And I’m curious about the fantasy world created for Lisette, anxious to visit other places like Taavi and Andrough (these countries are ruled by women, what a chance for great stories!). Ah, maybe we will have some dragon in future tales, is what it seems.
In all, I recommend “Velvet” for all readers who wish to immerse themselves in adventures, intrigue and a spicy, sizzling romance, but be prepared and open-minded for an unconventional hero and heroine.
Can’wait for the sequel, we will have much more in Jaghar and Viviette’s tale.

At first I thought this was going to be the classic feisty sheltered Princess + Rogue who introduces her to Skulduggery romance, and it sort of was that.

What I did not see coming was the brothel.

Specifically, both the princess and the hero working in said brothel during the story.

Excellent use of ye olde classic trope of "I must de-virginise you to matter-of-factly initiate you into The Ways of Sex Workers but oh no I caught feelings". A classic for a reason.

The heat level caught me somewhat by surprise - it says steamy in the description, but the first part lulled me into a tropey light fantasy mood and the heroine is very inexperienced, so I assumed the steam would take the form of "euphemistic on-page sex after a long build up". But no! The steam rapidly escalates, going from . Good for you, intrepid heroine.

The characterisation is lovely, and the intrigue plot is really solid too. I was sold on the romance between these two badly wounded characters, and I do love me a good queen-and-knight dynamic.

Additional bonus points for the rogue being of the 'tightly buttoned up calculating' type and also for enemies-to-lovers romance, which I'm always a sucker for.

There's not much sense of the wider worldbuilding beyond the few details needed for the political intrigue plot, but the lack doesn't interfere with the story the book is trying to tell.

We end on a Happily For Now, with our lovers together but a clear path to Further Obstacles To Resolve. Looking forward to the next book!

I loved reading Velvet! Viviette is such a strong character, I like how she wants to be so much more than what everyone expects of her, and really make a difference as a future queen instead of just standing by. And the scenes between her and Jaghar were just pure fire!

So if you're looking for a book with lots of smut, with a strong female lead, this could be the book for you!

I like this author.
I like the princess/guard trope.
I like the political intrigue.
I even liked the steamy scenes.

But honestly, the brothel spy stuff ruined it for me. It was really sloppy and I don’t like J being a pimp and pimping V out. Also she’s a literal princess there’s no way in hell she would be doing that.

‘You’ll make one hell of a queen, Velvet.’

The Princess & The Spy was a seductive tale of mystery and intrigue!  I devoured this book way too quickly and can't wait to do that with the rest of this completed trilogy!  If you like your fantasy steamy, fun and with some grittiness to it too, then you definitely need to add this one to your tbr!
Her eyes were like bright stars even in the darkness, measuring him with so much interest that he suddenly started worrying what else she might see.

Viviette came back three years later, after studying in another court, so she would be more mature and act appropriately.  Truth be told, she was already wise above her years but her father and his spymaster always saw her as just a little girl.  And while her father still saw her that way, events led the spymaster to see her in a completely different light.  Viviette was strong, determined and wanted to learn to rule.  She could be so clever at times and I absolutely adored her!
‘You can always turn back, Princess,’ he muttered.
Viviette closed her eyes. She hadn’t expected such tenderness, not from a man like him.

The spymaster Jaghar, could be such a mask of indifference.  He was the king's right hand man and was to keep him and his daughter safe.  Yet the Viviette that returned after three years, wasn't the one he was familiar with anymore.  She shocked, surprised him and even got him to show his emotions time and again.  And as parts of the story unfolded and we were given a full picture of what truly went on behind the scenes at the castle, and how they obtained their secrets, it pushed Jaghar and Viviette closer together.  While there was a strong attraction there, they both thought that the other one couldn't want them.  All the while the stakes around them kept getting higher!
‘Look me in the eyes,’ she muttered, ‘and tell me you don’t want me to make you.’
He didn’t open his eyes. He would be lost if he opened them.
‘That is an order, Spymaster.’
Jaghar inhaled slowly, bracing himself, and looked up. Her face was close enough to kiss her, if kissing her wouldn’t violate every last limit between them.

With secret passages, seductive moments, and characters that were so easy to love, The Princess & The Spy was a spellbinding adventure!  While I guessed how one thing was going to play out, there were still so many other parts of it that were such an unknown.  This book kept me on my toes and was so fun to discover what was going to happen next.  Plus I loved that this story not only made me laugh but I also found myself gasping out loud quite a few times!  Such a huge hit, I can't wait to binge the next two books!
‘You – you won’t hurt me, will you?’
‘Princess,’ he said, kissing her neck as he lowered himself between her legs, ‘I would rather die than  hurt you.’

PS I didn't even see the title of this book coming at all lol!

The Princess & The Spy #1
Fantasy
Lisette Marshall
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.5

After reading Lisette Marshall's 'The Queen & The Assassin' series, I've been very curious about Viviette and Jaghar and their story so when I found out they had their own series, I just had to read it.

Viviette isn't the innocent, silly little girl that her father, King Trystan, seems to think she is. She has a desire to learn and prepare for the day that she becomes Queen and Jaghar is the perfect person to help her.

I really liked seeing Viviette and Jaghar develop individually. Viviette becomes more conniving, sneaky and more confident and Jaghar slowly starts to acknowledge his feelings for her. Their chemistry is great and their banter made me laugh.

This book has a lot more spice than any of the other books by Lisette Marshall that I've read, but it's done well. The plot doesn’t rely on the spicy scenes so it continued to develop and flow nicely.

I love Lisette's style of writing. She manages to create shorter reads while keeping everything essential to a good book and without rushing anything.

The only thing I wasn't keen on was the miscommunication trope but that's more my own preference than anything else so other people might love it.

I can't wait to continue reading this series and find out more about this couple.

I loved this book. It is steamy, action packed, and filled with a lot of court intrigue. Viviette is always left out when her father and Jaghar, the spymaster, discuss court politics and she is tired of being treated like a child when she is 19. So she starts to try and gather information on her country's enemies herself. She ends up getting Jaghar attention and he shows her how his spies get there information from their enemies, by seducing them. Viviette is intrigued and ends up wanting to learn all that Jaghar can teach her while they try not to fall for each other. This book is super interesting and I loved the romance and the plotting that was involved in this story. Can't wait for book 2.

Modern language and phrasing is used throughout, which spoils the medieval🏰 story effect the author was going for.

Eh, 3.25

Slight complaints such as the wording "on the courtyard."
"The crowd gathered on the courtyard" did they? Did they gather on the garden? Did they gather on the sparring ring? A courtyard is a defined space made of different bits. You don't gather upon it. You can gather on the grass IN the courtyard.

"Deep, dangerous cravings lurking in the depths of her."

"He could answer with less and less confidence the longer he mulled over hem."

"He might have enjoyed at that thought a week ago."

"Didn't look like he was in the mood to talk about anything than the subject of her lost virginity."

Apparently there is an editor. I hope she didn't get paid well.
