In Mastering the Mental Game of Trading, Steven Goldstein shares his insights and experience as a renowned trading performance coach to help traders achieve success in the markets.
Through personal anecdotes and relatable stories of real traders, Goldstein explores the inner world of trading and reveals how our attitudes and misconceptions can prevent us from achieving our full potential.
Goldstein introduces his powerful model, the Performance Process Cycle, which teaches traders how to overcome their emotions and biases, improve self-awareness, and make sense of how they are impacted by their interactions with markets and uncertainty. By applying this model, traders can develop an unparalleled level of calm and objectivity, enabling them to navigate the treacherous terrain of financial markets with ease.
With Goldstein’s guidance, traders will be inspired to reflect on their own behaviours, beliefs, and actions as they work towards mastering the mental game of trading.
A very worthy addition to the psychology of trading
I like Steven's take on becoming a consistently profitable trader. It's all about learning self-control and to operate in a world without certainty, which makes most uncomfortable. Applying his approach should offer a viable solution; one many should strongly consider.
Up there with Market Wizards (Schwager) Alpha Trader (Donnelley) and Mark Douglass books as the best trading books of all time. I loved how he started each chapter with a quote. Great book
I liked this book. It's well written and it presents a very well thought-out methodology of improving ones trading practice. I plan to re-read the book and highlight it to make it a personal notebook. Of course, the usefulness of a book like this still depends on discipline of the trader. He has many fresh ideas. Among them, he argues for being truly present, having purpose (real focus), and journaling. That's the one that still trips me up. I know if we don't journal, and study our own notes, we simply repeat our mistakes. This is especially important as we get older. I really appreciated how he emphasized the difference between focusing on results vs. process. That carries over to sports and many aspects of life. In the end, I'm only going 4 stars because the book is very good but it didn't wow me. Perhaps because I've read so many other trading books.
A book written by an accomplished trader and coach, which tells the readers on how to improve their performance in trading. The author has laid out a detailed framework to guide traders through various stages that are in the trading lifecycle. He explains the 3P framework that is essential for success in trading. The author has given multiple examples of traders, both successful and unsuccessful, and highlighted the reasons behind their performance.
The book is easy to read and I found it interesting in most parts. Being a trader myself I could relate to almost all the pitfalls that are described in the book. I will recommend it to everyone who is involved in trading in financial markets.
This sits firmly in the trading psychology camp, but with a slightly more structured and coaching-oriented feel than books like Trading in the Zone.
The authors draws on experience as a performance coach, and that shows, the book is less philosophical and more about practical self-improvement. There is a strong emphasis on journaling, feedback loops, and identifying behavioural patterns. This is more of a book designed to be worked through, not just read.
There are some great nuggets of wisdom in Mastering the Mental Game of Trading, but they're presented at such a high level that I often found myself wanting more practical, detailed guidance on how to actually implement the ideas and improve. Much of the book felt like fluff, and it could have conveyed the same message in far fewer pages. Worth reading for the insights, but I was hoping for something more actionable.
Hammers the point that trading is a performance activity, and as such, requires the trader to be in a optimal state to performer. Elite performers don't leave this to chance. They have a process, and Goldstein's performance process cycle provides the framework for the trader to develop theirs, in alignment with their true self.
Great book on the process every trader follows and how to navigate through it successfully. Working on putting your ego on your side is part of the Way to mastery.
