Beach House, A Flash Fiction Story by Chuck Grossart I received a free kindle copy of Beach House, A Flash Fiction Story by Chuck Grossart in an Amazon promotion.I gave this very short story five stars. Devin drove up to her property which was a small, two-story New England beach house. It was one of the nicer houses around Bransford Beach. When she walked toward the front porch she found the front door open just a crack."She slowly walked from room to room on the lower level...everything was in order. As she reached the top of the stairs leading to the upper level, however, she knew she wasn't alone."Great twist at the end of this story.
What irritates me about Chuck Grossart is that his stories are too short. (This is a good thing) Especially so in Beach House. In this great flash fiction story, Grossart writes about Devin, who is heading to the beach house she owns with her husband. As the story opens, the reader is informed trough a radio broadcast that four women have disappeared in the last month. As Devin arrives at the beach house, she notices the front door is open. Will she be the fifth woman to disappear? Any more of a synopsis would give away too much.
I enjoyed the story, but Beach House is not without its faults. Due to the shortness of the form, some things get left out. For instance, just where did Devin produce the Glock pistol from and why does she have it?
NOTE: I have not read, rated or reviewed "Beach House" yet. But it is somehow linked to another story by this author. When I run a search for that other story, "Beach House" is the one that appears. My rating also appears, but the review I posted on the other book's page does not appear here. Unfortunately, it DOES appear on a THIRD book's page!
The Beach House was my first taste of flash fiction and will not be my last. From the opening line I was hooked and could see the story playing in front of my eyes like a film. A great twist in so fewer pages. Will definitely read more of this authors work and urge you, if you have not, to take a read of The Beach House.
