நித்ய கன்னி அன்றாடம் நாம் காண்கிற காதற் கதையோ, கற்புக் கதையோ, கற்பு கேட்ட கதையோ அல்ல. மனிதன் உயர்வை நோக்கி நடத்தும் இயற்கைப் போராட்டங்களைச் சில விசித்திரப் பாத்திரங்களின் மூலம் இந்நூல் சித்தரிக்கிறது. காலம் காலமாகப் பெண்மையின் எதிர்க்க முடியாத ஆட்சியை அடக்கி வைக்க ஆண் பலவித அணிவகுப்புகளை மாற்றி மாற்றி அமைத்து வருகிறான். ஆனால் உண்மையாகவே ஆளப்பிறந்த பெண் எப்படியோ அவற்றை மீறிக்கொண்டுதான் ஓங்கி நிற்கிறாள். வெங்கடராமன் நம் முன் நிறுத்திய பாத்திரங்களை உருவகப் பாத்திரங்களாகப் பார்த்தால் நமக்கு இந்த உண்மை புலப்படும்.

About the author

Venkatram was born in Kumbakonam in a Sourashtra family. He obtained a B.A degree in Economics and was involved in silk Zari business. He first started publishing in the literary magazine Manikodi in the 1930s, while he was still a college student. He was influenced by Ku. Pa. Rajagopalan and was part of a literary circle that included Karichan Kunju (R. Narayanaswami), Thi. Janakiraman, Thiruloka Seetaram, Dhenuka, Thanjai Prakash, Na.Vichuvanathan, C.M.Muthu and Podhikaiverkpan. His works have been published in magazines like Kaalamohini, Grama Ooozhiyan and Sivaji. He also ran a literary magazine named Thenee briefly. He has written over two hundred short stories and novels. Nithyakanni Kathukal and Velivithee are his most noted works. He also wrote more than 60 short biographies for Palaniappa Brothers and translated over 10 books for the National Book Trust of India. In 1993, he was awarded the Sahitya Akademi Award for Tamil for novel Kathukal (lit. Ears).

சென்ற ஆண்டு எம்.வி.வெங்கட்ராமனின் நூற்றாண்டு விழாவை முன்னிட்டு ஸ்ருதிடிவியில் நடந்த ஒரு கலந்துரையாடலில் லக்ஷ்மி சரவணகுமார் எம்.வி.வியின் எழுத்தையும் இந்நூலின் சிறப்புப் பற்றியும் கூறியபோதே இந்நூலை வாசிக்கும் எண்ணம் இருந்தது.
ஆனால் இப்பொழுதுதான் இந்நூலை வாசிக்க முடிந்தது.
மகாபாரதத்தின் ஒரு சிறு கிளைக்கதையாக வரும் யயாதியின் மகள் மாதவியின் கதை.
என்றும் நித்தியகன்னியாகவே இருக்கும் அவளின் வரமே அவள் வாழ்வில் குறுக்கிடும் ஆண்களால் சாபமாக மாறும்போது ஏற்படும் விளைவுகளே இப்புதினம்.
பெண்களின் அடிமைத்தனத்தை மையமாக வைத்து மகாபாரதத்தின் பின்புலமாக வைத்து புனையப்பட்டதே இந்நூலின் சிறப்பு.
ஆசிரியர் இப்புதினத்தின் ஒரு கதாப்பாத்திரமான போஜ நாட்டின் மன்னனான உசிநரனாக உலா வருகிறார்.
லௌகீக வாழ்வில் இருந்து விலகிய துறவியான விசுவாமித்திரரையும் பகடி செய்துள்ளார்.மேலும்
சமீபகாலங்களில் பெண் அடிமை மற்றும் பல சமூக சீரழிவுகளுக்குக் காரணமான மனுதர்மம் பெரும் விவாதங்களை உருவாக்கியுள்ளது.அதனையே இந்நூலிலும் ஆசிரியர் கேள்விக்கு உட்படுத்தியுள்ளார்.
இலக்கிய வளமிக்க மொழிநடை வாசகர்களுக்கு சிறிதும் அயர்ச்சி தராதவண்ணம் அமைந்துள்ளது.

Nitya Kanni is MV Venkatram's reimagination of the story of Madhavi, a perpetual virgin, from Udyoga Parvam of Mahabharatha. While the original narrative is anecdotal and runs only for a few pages, MV Venkatram gives Madhavi an arc and adds a feminist undertone to blow her story up to a full-fledged novel. The novel begins by showing Madhavi as a young romantic princess who falls in love with Galavan at the first sight of him. While her father-king Yayati's decision to 'gift' his perpetually virgin daughter to needy Galavan initially seems like a win-win situation, Madhavi soon realizes that she is stuck in a complex Kafkaesque web of Dharmic demands weaved by respectable men around her (including her father Yayati and her lover Galavan). She is forced to withdraw her love for Galavan, she is made to bear children with three kings and a sage, she is called by foul names and is even refused drinking water - all in the name of Dharma. The loss of her pet deer Kalyani along the way marks the loss of Madhavi's youth and child-like innocence due to harsh experiences she faces in a short span of time. Towards the end of the novel, Madhavi comes to the realisation that the world she lives in, cannot but be a man's world run by heartless principles of Dharma created by men. She finally gets out of this man-made quagmire by becoming a deer among others, far into the vast expanse of freedom-filled wilderness. Deftly written in a poetic tone, MV Venkatram's Nitya Kanni is certainly one of the classics of modern Indian literature.

நித்ய கன்னி தமிழின் செம்மை நாவல்களில் ஒன்றென எனக்கு அறிமுகமான நூல். மேலும் இது மன்னர் கால கதை என்று அறிந்தபோது இதன்மீதான ஆர்வம் கூடியது. நடை முதலில் எனக்குச் சுஜாதாவைத் தான் நினைவுபடுத்தியது. ஆனால், அவர் எழுத்தில் இத்தனை மன ஆழங்கள் இருந்ததில்லை.

ஒரு பெண் - அவளுக்கு அரிதான ஒரு நிகழ்வு நடக்கிறது; ஒரு வரம் கிடைக்கிறது. அதை ஆண்கள் ஒரு வாய்ப்பாக எண்ணி அவர்களுக்கான தேவைகளைப் பூர்த்திச் செய்து கொள்கிறார்கள். இதன் களம், அதைச் சுற்றிய கதைக் கட்டமைப்பு இரண்டுமே சுவாரஸ்யமானவை. தொடர்ந்து வாசிக்கத் தூண்டுபவை.

மாதவி என்ற பெண்ணிற்கு, கரு கொண்டு பிள்ளை பெற்றபின் - கருவுக்கு முன்னான - கன்னி உடல் திரும்பிவிடுகிறது. இந்த அரிதின்மீது மனிதர்கள் அவரவர் அறங்களை ஏற்றுகிறார்கள், தங்களைத் திருப்தி செய்து கொள்கிறார்கள். யாரும்(ஒருவன் தவிர) மாதவியை உடல் தாண்டிச் சிந்திக்கவில்லை. பெண்ணை வெறும் ஒரு பொருளாகவே பாவிக்கும் குணத்தில் நின்று ஆண்கள் அணுகிகிறார்கள். ஆனால், இது எங்கும் ஒருதலைப்பட்சமாகத் தோன்றவில்லை. கதையின் போக்கு அப்படி தோன்ற செய்யவில்லை என்றும் கூடக் கூறலாம். அனைவருக்குமே அந்த வரம் ஒரு சாக்காக இருக்கிறது. அதனால அவர்களுக்கு ஏதேனும் ஆக வேண்டியிருக்கிறது. அப்படியான நிலையில் நாம் என்ன செய்திருப்போம்?

சுவாரஸ்யமான நாவல். புராணப் பாத்திரங்களைக் கொண்டு புனையப்பட்டது. நிறைய வடமொழி சொற்கள் உள்ளன. அந்தக் கால எழுத்து முறையின் வெளிப்பாடு. ஆனால் அது வாசிப்பை எங்கும் பெரியதாகத் தடை செய்யவில்லை. கண்டிப்பாக வாசிக்க வேண்டிய நூல்.

Nice and excellent narration..!!

Usually tamil novels ... I will quickly finish... But this story painfull.. My heart is not taking easy... Each and every pages deeply pain... That's why o take week... Finally i finished.... Narration and words are marvellous..! (My tamil keyboard is not working properly thats why i wrote english)

மகாபாரத கதையின் ஒரு பகுதியை தேர்ந்து அதில் நுட்பமான பல விசயங்களை சொல்லி செல்கிறார். பெண்ணை பெற்ற தந்தை முதல் அனைத்தையும் துறந்த முனிவர் வரை அனைவரும் ஒரு சேர ஒரு போகப்பொருளாக பார்க்கிறார்கள்.

நடுவில் நிறுத்திவிடலாம் என்றுகூட தோன்றியது அவ்வளவு மனத்தடைகள் வந்துகொண்டே இருக்கின்றன.

Very good fiction work by taking out a small story from Mahabharata. The author has given the view point from all characters involved, especially the lead character Madhavi.
