Me, Mercedes Bennion? Working for the US Forest Service? I’ve never thought of myself as the outdoorsy, hard-working type. But one quick glance at those mouth-watering forest rangers and oh, baby, sign this seventeen-year-old up for a whole summer of fresh air, mountains and starry, starry nights!
My Life as a Lumberjack is one of the most entertaining books I have read this year. Mercedes “Benz” is just a hilarious, sarcastic narrator. I love watching all her adventures as part of the YCC through her eyes. I also loved watching her get a little boy crazy over some of the Forest Service leaders. It was just really enjoyable to read how Benz handle all the trouble she always seem to be in and or causing.
Benz is very confident and quite the flirt when she wants to be, and sometimes it comes back to bite her. Her best friend, Conor and her join the Forest Service Youth Conservation Corps for something to do with their summer. Their friendship goes through many changes as they grow and change throughout the course of the summer, as they get ready to enter their final year of high school.
My Life as a Lumberjack is really a book about a soon to be senior experiencing a summer in the woods working with friends, and developing a crush or two or three. It is just a fun and fast read that I thoroughly enjoyed. It is the perfect book to read to get into that summer feeling. Especially for those who enjoy spending their summer outside in the woods or camping. I even picked up a few new tricks I want to try next time we take a family camping trip.
My Life as a Lumberjack does not disappoint, and I could not be more ready to pack up and take off into the mountains for a few days. Benz is the fun and loveable character that I loved to watch stumble and fall before she picks herself up and realizes what she should have known all along.
**Unabridged Bookshelf recieved this book in exchange for an honest review**
"My pulse quickened to match his, and I realized that love wasn't about the movies. It wasn't about hoots of applause and heart-stopping fireworks. Those were great. Those were fun, but love, this love, my love, was quiet and secret and perfect."
WOW! I'm feeling quite giddy right now after reading this book. Sara V. Olds has just won me over with this YA contemporary.
From the first page, I adored Mercedes aka Benz. She's so funny and quirky and snarky. The fact that she made fun of her height just made her more endearing. (from one short person to another) Trouble seems to follow her everywhere.
The boys:
Can I just say "Swoon-Worthy" doesn't even begin to describe them?
The romance takes a while to build, but when it does, my oh my! It left my heart beating. It took Mercedes one summer to realise the one person who loves her for she was, was the one person she's known all her life. This is a wonderful friends-to-lovers story, one of my favourite tropes.
"You're mine, Mercedes. I've been waiting a long time for you to be ready and now I'm not going to wait any longer. I'm claiming what's mine." ~ Conor's words when he finally decides to tell Benz how he feels about her.
Er...uh..yeah, where was I? Yep. I adored this book, and highly recommend it.
I think this book is so much fun. I see a lot of YA about dystopias and death and depressing stuff, so this was a breath of fresh air in my inbox. The heroine, Benz, reminds me a bit of Cher from "Clueless" she's adorable and loveable, but doesn't notice some things that are right in front of her face.
Would recommend this for a light summer read, maybe on the beach, but especially if you're going to a US park like Yellowstone or something for your vacation!
This book had me laughing out loud by the time I neared the end. Overall, I loved the setting of the story, which placed the main character in an outdoor summer work program with the Forest Service for teens. The main character is definitely a young girl who easily falls for every good looking new man that enters her life while on the job, except of course, the one that matters most. As she works her way through one predicament after another, she is slow to realize what she truly wants. But the entertainment provided by her journey makes up for her shortfalls in falling for the wrong guys (as the subtitle suggests). The only thing that brought me pause while reading was the main character's word choice when she got frustrated or when things went terribly wrong. No, she didn't swear, which apparently is what my brain kept telling me was warranted by her situations. But no, she didn't. Not even one "darn" was uttered. However, I appreciate the author wanting to keep this book a clean read. This is what lends it to being a suitable read for both middle grade and young adult readers. I will definitely look forward to reading more stories from this author!
Funny, that would be my main thought on this book, witty would be my second. Mercedes and her best friend Conner join a forestry association for a summer job and spend three months cleaning campgrounds and blazing trails and other outdoor things. Merc is funny, clumsy and boy crazy but not in a way that was obnoxious to me. She also tries to be nice to others but is not perfect. Conner gets a lot of abuse from her and he features less in the book but you can tell he is nice and good looking. All the characters had such great chemistry together. Not every plot was taken advantage of but it was a good representation of a girls mind. I loved the vomit part and the kiss at the end. And I love the banter between the characters. No sex, One scene where an accident occurs and somebody has to go to the hospital with and injury. No language. I would buy this book and read it again.
Finally a romance novel that it's for wholesome teens. As a parent of teens I am offended by all the sex prevalent in movies, shows, and books geared towards teens. I think there are plenty of teens out there who believe in abstinence and more might if the popular culture didn't push sex onto our teens like drugs.
This book shows teens they can have romance and relationships without having sex.
It also has a great message for girls about being yourself and still getting the guy.
Mercedes has to be one of the quirkiest, silliest, and cute characters ever. She has a fun, mis-adventurous, crazy and gorgeous-boy-filled summer that you just have to read to believe.
I would rate this book a PG. It has some kissing and an accident that had blood. There are no swear words.
It was freakin funny!! I love it!! " This wasn't a love of movie but it was secret. Mine. Perfect " I love Conor and I love Benz and I love them together even when I also loved Dan-Dan the mountain man and Norm all along the story!! I loved the part of Bananas, or better say Norm carrying the bananas!! It was such an incredible book and I'm freakin in love with him! *You're not allowed to die if you haven't read it yet.
This was a very young book. I think Kassi wanted to read it. The author lives two doors down from me so it was fun to talk to her about the book at our book club. It is a very clean, good fun book. But it is for a younger audience.
Bought this earlier today, and I am sooo excited to pick this up once I finish a few review books! It sounds so good, oh and I am seriously in love with this title and cover. (:
Sweet, but very silly. MC was so boy crazy I was embarrassed for her, and really, how on earth can you be so dense as to not understand why a boy gets mad when he sees you flirt with another boy? Oi.
