Kara Louise has been writing "Pride and Prejudice" novels since 2001. She has published 8 novels, 2 that were published by Sourcebooks Publications. She was born in the San Fernando Valley, just north of Los Angeles, but moved to Kansas in 1991. She lives just outside Wichita with her husband, sharing their 10 acres with an ever changing menagerie of animals. They have one married son who lives in St. Louis..
I LOVE this book! I can't believe I missed out on this for so long! I'll be honest, I avoided this book because I couldn't see how Darcy as a pirate—or at least Darcy as someone who's impersonating a pirate—would work out. I'm so glad I finally took a chance on this.
Pirates and Prejudice starts after Elizabeth turned down Mr. Darcy's proposal. The rejection leaves Darcy despondent, a little intimate with liquor, and uncaring of his physical appearance. Because of his unruly appearance and wobbly gait, he gets mistaken for a hunted man—the infamous pirate Lockerly. His name gets cleared, but somehow, he is roped in into impersonating the pirate to finally catch him.
So, there's no reunion at Pemberley since Darcy wouldn't even be there. He'll be busy pretending to be someone he's not, while Elizabeth—along with her father—unexpectedly travels to the Isles of Scilly to visit Mr. Bennet's ill sister.
There's a bit of a Darcy makeover to make him look and talk the part. That was pretty entertaining. I couldn't stop giggling because of Darcy's pirate talk. I could almost feel how awkward it was for him! Adorable man. He managed to portray the pirate quite well, but Darcy was pretty much still "Darcy". There are some things he just can't shake off.
Obviously, the story deviated from Pride and Prejudice, but Kara Louise managed to weave the story in a way similar to the original; just with the elements of the sea, pirates, and disguise. I loved seeing how Elizabeth and Darcy came to an understanding, and I was left in a puddle of feels with how sweet he was. I swear, you guys, I was giggling in my room like an idiot thanks to Darcy. Their flirtations and interactions were so sweet and adorable and ahhh. I love it. Haha!
And the proposal!!!!!!!!
Pirates and Prejudice is one of the most fun variations I've ever read, and if you're looking for a fun, action-packed, yet romantic P&P read, this is the book you'll enjoy.
What was the first thought I had when finishing this novel? This story should come with a bag of popcorn and a package of Twizzlers.
Pirates and Prejudice takes Austen's beloved characters and sets them on the high seas. Darcy has let himself go after Lizzy's refusal of his marriage proposal. No, seriously...he's let himself go. So much, that he's mistaken for a ruthless pirate. Darcy agrees to help the authorities capture the pirate by impersonating him. Soon, his path crosses Elizabeth and her father. She doesn't recognize him, but he sure reminds her of someone with which she once had mistaken impressions.
The author at times seems more like a cinematographer and screenwriter. I stopped in the middle of the book to look up the Isle of Scilly, because I wanted to see the sunrise David, Elizabeth, and Melanie saw. This isn't so much a Pride and Prejudice variation as much as a summer popcorn movie. Does the premise seem a bit silly? Yes! Do we care? Heck, NO! Just pass the popcorn and watch Darcy/Errol Flynn sweep Elizabeth/Olivia de Havilland off of her feet.
It's a good thing that I don't have to wait till the novel comes out on DVD to 'see' it again!
What if an extremely disheartened Darcy spent the months after his disastrous proposal to Elizabeth Bennet in a state of neglect, self-pity, and inebriation? What if Darcy's unkept and unrecognizable appearance led to him being mistaken for a wanted pirate? What if Darcy agreed to impersonate this wanted pirate (even though disguise of every sort is his abhorrence) in order to help the authorities capture him?
In an attempt to move on and forget his pain, Darcy agrees to this duplicitous charade. He ends up spending a tolerably enjoyable week impersonating Lockerly - his natural ability to take command and his just treatment of his subordinates win him the loyalty and respect of his makeshift crew. But Darcy becomes much more embroiled in this masquerade when he is unexpectedly taken out to sea and finds his ship heading straight towards Lockerly's alleged hideout...
What ensues next is a swashbuckling adventure filled with threatening storms, daring rescues, and crossing swords with real pirates!
Oh my!! A dashing and valiant pirate Darcy! I can easily say that my most favorite aspect of this novel was Kara Louise's portrayal of Mr. Darcy (and the fact that he is masquerading as a pirate! SQUEEE!) His unwillingness to take part in this deception, his adorable pirate "talk," his honorable and brave actions to protect everyone in his care, and his unwavering devotion for Elizabeth just liquefied my heart. Darcy is one sexy pirate!! While the idea of Mr. Darcy acting like a pirate may at first sound a little far-fetched, Kara Louise fashions together a well-constructed and believable premise that does not feel fantastical or forced. I appreciated how, even though he is impersonating a criminal and far away from the society and sphere he is accustomed to, Kara Louise's Mr. Darcy, in essentials "is very much what he ever was."
What else do I love about this novel? The fact that it is chock-full of exhilarating action - no calm or still waters for these characters! Between navigating through dangerous and unpredictable weather, repairing damages to a ship, and fending off real-live pirate attacks - this story was a succession of exciting escapades and obstacles. And the emotional journey that Darcy AND Elizabeth experience on this voyage is as turbulent as a stormy sea! Kara Louise does a brilliant job of taking our beloved couple through a myriad of emotions - fear, deception, admiration, trust, misapprehension, doubt, and hope. I simply loved witnessing the change and progression of Darcy and Elizabeth's relationship. Especially because Elizabeth is traveling with her father and an amiable cousin with whom she seems to share a mutual attraction.
Looking for an epic and grand adventure? With Pirates and Prejudice, Kara Louise delivers a sweeping tale that is thrilling, bold, and beautifully crafted! Brava, Kara! Thank you for bringing Darcy and Elizabeth into the world of pirates, buried treasure, bandanas, and billowy white shirts!
To borrow and alter a phrase from Captain Jack Sparrow: "Read on, me hearties, yo ho!"
When I first read the blurb for this story I thought it sounded very... improbable. The idea of Darcy being brought so low by Lizzy’s rejection and abandoning all care for his personal appearance and to sprawl around London, rather drunk, and then to be mistaken for a pirate all seemed a little... far-fetched. However, once I got past that and thought ‘why not’, I really rather enjoyed this story, much more than I was expecting to. It was a story full of fast-paced adventure, amusing comedy and passionate romance.
Having Mr Fitzwilliam Darcy of Pemberley mistaken as the infamous pirate Lockerley, with his long beard and curly hair, and consequently thrown into jail was funny in itself, but then to have Darcy agree to impersonate this pirate in the hopes to catch the real Lockerley was even funnier! Imagining Mr Darcy agreeing to something like that is difficult, I grant you (especially given that disguise of every sort is his abhorrence), but it soon seemed like a perfectly normal adventure for Darcy to get involved with! It was a lot of fun, once he had agreed to this impersonation, to see Darcy trying to ‘forget’ how to be a gentleman (and his “gentleman-like manner”!), walk with a much less graceful posture and learn to talk like a commoner!
Once Darcy was able to drop the Lockerley act, he still couldn’t reveal his true identity (well, didn’t want to – it would be a little embarrassing wouldn’t it?) he adopted the character of a rather heroic and dashing Captain Smith. And it falls to this Captain Smith to rescue a certain Miss Elizabeth Bennet who has been taken hostage by pirates (three guesses which pirate!) who very quickly falls for this mysterious captain, whom she seems to recognise (I wonder why?). I can easily see why Lizzy would fall for Captain Smith; Darcy makes a rather magnificent pirate and there are some rather impressive sword fights (where Darcy's fencing skills finally come in useful!)
There were many clever quotes and scenes which are recognisable from the original story but put into a completely different context (such as Lady Catherine’s disapproval of Darcy’s actions (and not because of his choice of bride this time!)). As Lizzy does not recognise Darcy straightway (understandably!) there are a few scenes where previous meetings and conversations are referred to (such as the conversations at Netherfield and their dance at the ball) which was rather amusing to read and very clever at times.
And never fear Wickham was still in the story but the way in which Darcy comes to the rescue of Lydia is in a completely different way to the original and was a clever way to bring Wickham into the story I thought. Georgiana also makes an appearance and her relationship with Lizzy was sweet, if little seen and explored in this variation.
Something which always annoyed me when I read Pride and Prejudice in my English class at school was the number of cynics among my class who said the only reason (and I emphasise only) Lizzy changed her mind and married Darcy was because of Pemberley, which is nonsense. (Yes she says ‘And of this place I might have been mistress’ and yes she jokes that she first in love with Darcy after ‘my first seeing his beautiful grounds at Pemberley’ but no, she was not being serious!) Anyway, in most other variations I have read (if not all other) Lizzy does see Pemberley before they marry. However, (I am finally coming to my point now!) Lizzy never actually sees Pemberley till after the marriage; so there, cynics in my class! It was quite nice to have a story where she fell for Darcy without seeing him in his own environment contributing at all, as it does play an important part in many variations as well as, of course, the original story.
As for the romance, you will not be disappointed. It was, without giving anything away, a perfect ending. For the story, the set up for the ending was ... well, perfect. It cleverly linked back to important scenes earlier in the story when Darcy was disguised as Captain Smith. In fact, throughout the final few chapters when Darcy was once again the clean-shaven, well dressed gentleman we all know, there were many links and references back to the pirating adventure. The ending was also not abrupt, as it sometimes can be, as we see some sweet little scenes of the wedding day and there is a short epilogue where we see what became of some of the characters we met earlier in the story, which is always a nice touch.
Although this is the most far-fetched variation I have read, it has easily been one of the most enjoyable Pride and Prejudice variations, without a doubt! It is such a lot of fun, full of adventure and breathtaking romance! I stayed up rather late into the night to finish this one, which has to be a good sign. Mr Fitzwilliam Darcy now has some stiff competition from Captain Fitzwilliam Darcy!
This was such a fun variation on Pride and Prejudice! We pick up with Darcy after his failed proposal at Hunsford. He has let himself go and is wallowing in his misery; he's rented a room near the docks so nobody of his acquaintance sees him in this state because his hair is a mess, he hasn't shaved in ages, and he spends his days boozing to forget. He is almost unrecognisable, and he gets mistaken for the pirate Lockerly. Luckily, due to the fact that Lockerly has a scar that Darcy doesn't, Darcy doesn't get hung as a pirate but due to his uncanny resemblance to the pirate he is asked to pose as him in hopes that the real Lockerly will be tempted out of hiding. Although disguise of every sort is his abhorrence, Darcy is persuaded to comply, dressing as Lockerly and learning some less gentlemanly lingo. He hopes that having this deception to focus on will take his mind off the lovely Miss Bennet that found him so lacking as a gentleman.
Unbeknown to him, the same Miss Elizabeth Bennet is accompanying her father to visit his sister on the Isles of Scilly. On their return trip their vessel gets into difficulties and the ladies get taken ashore to an island but when the sailors try to get the men to shore they run into the real pirates. Luckily, there is a fake Lockerly nearby who is on hand to help....
What follows involves mistaken identity, sword fighting, swashbuckling, rope swinging, pirate treasure, changed viewpoints and some lovely, lovely romance. If you are looking for something that Jane Austen herself may have written, then this probably isn't it; but if you are willing to have a bit of fun with your Austenesque variations then I'd certainly recommend this one! I thoroughly enjoyed it.
Although I have other of Kara's books, when I read this title I was skeptical that it could be true to our P&P characters. (I had that exact same thought about Pemberley's Promise aka Darcy's Voyage.) And now I find myself having read it more than once and enjoying it ever so much as the first time with this the most recent re-reading. It drew me in, it caused me to stay up late, it caused angst and sexual tension (although no bedroom scenes), brought tears to my eyes and sighs from my soul. Well done, Ms. Louise!
I thought her characters remained true to JA's version...even with Darcy's condition at the beginning during which he allows himself to sink to the depths of despair. The author does a good job of taking us inside both Darcy's and Elizabeth's minds but doesn't allow it to drag by overdoing such. The scene during which they swing from one ship to the other is sooooo full of sexual tension! I kept waiting for Mr. Bennet or David to object. But Ms. Louise handles that by allowing that David has an injured arm while Mr. Bennet has neither the strength nor the know-how to handle that type of calisthenics. The plot moved right along and gave us lots of twists, causing me to smile at the author's cleverness. My favorite scenes are the ballroom in which Darcy surprises Elizabeth by showing up (of course) as a pirate and the following morning's proposal...sigh, sigh, sigh. Lovely. Highly recommend this book and will re-read again and again as I do with Pemberley's Promise.
Quite the Adventure! A case of mistaken identity results in Darcy being arrested as an escaped pirate. When his true identity is confirmed, he is asked to take part in a ruse to capture the real escapee. Learning not to act as a gentleman will be a challenge. As circumstances bring a traveling Elizabeth back into his life, keeping his true identity secret will test his still hurting heart to the max.
This engaging and well-written book, along with a very good performance and narration by Tiffany Halla Colonna provides hours of entertainment. This is a first-time listen of this narrator for me. Well done.
Second Listen - August 23-24, 2025 I wish JAFF authors would take note of this narrator. Her performance of all characters is top notch, and her Darcy is quite swoon worthy. Would love to hear more of her.
A fantastic and thrilling swashbuckling adventure out in the open seas-very well written-lots of angst-sweet romantic moments -a happy ever after and a great read that I'd highly recommend.
Sent into extreme depression after Miss Elizabeth Bennett refuses his proposal, Darcy lets his appearance go, and has taken to drink. It is not hard to see how he is mistakenly arrested as the pirate Captain Lockerly. Things get all sorted in the morning, but with such a resemblance between them the police see an opportunity to lay a trap for the real Captain Lockerly. Having Darcy impersonate him may draw the Captain out of hiding.
Elizabeth was to go on a tour of the lake country with her aunt and uncle, but unfortunately they had to cancel. However, Mr. Bennett's sister writes that she is ill and would like to see her brother one more time before she dies. She resides on the Isle of Scilly, and Mr. Bennett knows that his wife will never be able to make the journey, he decides to take his most adventurous daughter Elizabeth.
Loved this retelling. It was fun an adventurous. I loved seeing Darcy and Elizabeth interact in a different way. Even though it is not the description of him in the book it was fun picturing Darcy as Captain Jack Sparrow from Pirates of the Caribbean.
Dressed like a pirate, talked like a pirate, but was he a pirate?
Source: Google Play purchase:
Mr. Darcy needed time to regain his equilibrium and lick his wounds as he tried to forget and recover from Elizabeth Bennet’s harsh refusal to his marriage proposal. He drank himself into a stupor, neglected his appearance and found himself wondering the docks of London. Unfortunately, several men mistook him for the notorious pirate Lockerly and promptly nabbed and handcuffed him. Seeking the reward, they hauled him to the Thames River Police where he was thrown into a cell and informed he would promptly hang like the rest of his crew. That had a sobering effect on our poor hero.
Agents with the Thames River Police finally believed that Darcy was not Lockerly [as Darcy didn’t have a scar across his shoulder]. However, they needed Darcy to help them catch the pirate. When Darcy agreed, they went to a safe house where Darcy tried to overcome years of gentlemanly behavior, speech, and comportment. In its place, he had to learn how to walk, dress, speak and behave as a less educated, low-class pirate. This was hilarious. Darcy was aghast at the clothing he would have to wear. He stood and shook his head as he looked at his shirt with its billowing sleeves and ruffles down the front. It appeared that Lockerly was a bit of a dandy. The agents then took him to Lockerly’s captured ship the Devil’s Seamaiden. That too was a ploy to draw the pirate out of hiding, as he would want his ship back.
In the meantime, Elizabeth and her father were making plans for [how did Aunt Gardiner put it], a life changing adventure. Mr. Bennet’s sister was ill and requested that he come to her. Only Elizabeth was adventurous enough to go with him.
Elizabeth and her father enjoyed the nice weather and calm winds in their sea journey together. Aunt Viola lived on the Isles of Scilly and they enjoyed a good visit with her and the family they hadn’t seen in years. When time came to return home, their cousin David decided to travel back to London with them. He had had his eye on his cousin since she arrived and his attentions were not unwelcome by the lady.
On their return journey they endured… a violent storm, their ship ran aground, the group was set upon by the real pirate Lockerly and several of his men. I had endured the Bennet family dramatics, the sea travel to Aunt Violas, their family visit, the walks around the island, the cousins getting to know each other and all other banal attempts at their felicity. I wanted action and it was not happening. So I cheered when things finally started to roll.
On the island, we have a handful of pirates, Elizabeth with her pocket full of rocks, a Captain Smith to the rescue, sword fights, and skirmishes galore. Oh My!!! It was delicious. This was the part of the story that gave a nod to all those pirate movies we’ve watched over the years with Douglas Fairbanks and Errol Flynn. Ask your grandparents. The only way to get from one ship to the other was to swing on a rope to the other side. Yeah, those hero moments that we so love; it was so cool. Be still my heart.
Of course Lockerly tried to apprehend them while at sea, and there was a very good reason why. More swashbuckling sword fights and one mayhem after another. Are we done? No, the Thames River Police agent arrived at port and declared they needed one more thing from Darcy. They wanted to catch who ever helped Lockerly escape the last time he was in custody. Once again Darcy agreed to represent the dreaded pirate in order to see if someone will attempt to help him escape. While all this was going on Mr. Bennet, Elizabeth and David were headed toward Brighton to pick up Lydia on their way home. Big surprise when they arrived at Colonel Forster’s house.
This was a hilarious mess, full of misunderstandings galore, hidden treasures, pirates, violent storms at sea, shipwrecks, outrageous rescues that were just made for a quick read and a delightful epilogue. Our HEA was romantic, delicious, sensual, and downright Darcy and Elizabeth fan fiction. Yeah, it wasn’t canon, but [as Aunt Gardiner said], it was a life changing adventure.
Revised review on 7-11-16 as it was too much of a spoiler and I don't like spoilers. I apologize if I have given away the surprise or reveal for anyone. I hope you enjoy the book.
There is nothing so desperately monotonous as the sea, and I no longer wonder at the cruelty of pirates. ~James Russell Lowell
The Dread Pirate Darcy!
If it takes a thief to catch a thief, does it take a pirate to catch a pirate?
That is the rational of Edward Foster of the Thames River Police. Darcy has been mistaken for the pirate Lockerly and imprisoned. Foster realizes he is not Lockerly but asks that Darcy impersonate his double in an effort at re-capture.
Elizabeth and her father have sailed to visit his sister on the island of Scilly. On their return voyage, they encounter the real pirate Lockerly. It’s the fake Lockerly who must come to the rescue of his love.
How long before Elizabeth and Mr. Bennet recognize Darcy? How will they escape Lockerly and his crew? How can Lydia and Wickham be involved with a pirate?
This is a great tale of adventure on the seas and romance on the land. Anyone who likes JAFF would enjoy this story.
Long before we saw the sea, its spray was on our lips, and showered salt rain upon us. ~Charles Dickens, David Copperfield
Loved this alternate story! It starts out after Hunsford and the disastrous proposal. Darcy is feeling so low that he hides away in the seedier part of London where he tries to drown his sorrow. Unfortunately he is mistaken as a infamous pirate and because of this he gets drawn into an adventure. He agrees to pretend to be this pirate so that the authorities can arrest him. Anyway things never go as they should and the adventure in incredible , diverting and very romantic. I say romantic because picturing Darcy as a handsome swashbuckling pirate is swoon worthy and he of course in the course of this adventure will meet and somehow rescue Elizabeth! It was a wonderful journey and I highly recommend this book to everyone who loves adventure, romance and most especially Darcy and Elizabeth. Aye maties this book is not to be missed!
Kara Louise is one of my favorite authors and I was eager to read something else from her when Pirates and Prejudice was released.
But, just as to many other JAFF readers, this storyline appeared to be too weird for me.
Fortunately I read a review that gave me the courage to read it and I do not regret it. It’s a great book! It’s unbelievable, but Kara Louise did again! Once more she created a completely different scenario and managed to make us love it!
The story is indeed very different and difficult to believe in the beginning : After the Hunsford proposal, and rejection, Mr. Darcy wanders in the streets of London for a few days being mistaken by a wanted pirate. Once it is clear who he is, he is asked, and accepts to impersonate this pirate to help authorities capture him.
In the meantime, Elizabeth and her father travel to the Isles of Scilly to visit Mr. Bennet’s sister and end up traped in a desert Island.
So it is in the middle of the ocean, and in a small island, that our beloved characters reunite.
There were 2 premises in the book that I found hard to belive before reading it. If like me you are still suspicious, let me tell you how Kara Louise pulled it of.
First premisse – Mr. Darcy portraying a pirate? Yes, it sounds strange, but the book explains how this could happen very well, and it is actually charming. It is not that strange as it might appear. Mr. Darcy is not actually a pirate, he is just impersonating one to help authorities capture him.
Second premisse – Elizabeth does not recognize the man who purposed to her only 2 months ago? Again, it sounds strange, but it is very easy to believe it. When she sees Mr. Darcy impersonating a pirate, he has long hair, long beard, and an injury above his eye which is completely covered. Apart from that, he speaks as a commoner (something he learned before) and is in an island, so it is not obvious that it could be Mr. Darcy.
Also, she always thinks something is wrong, that he appears to be familiar, and discovers his true identity only after a couple of days.
So if you’re thinking about not reading the book just because of these 2 premises, give it a shot. The author is very good and did a great job explaining everything.
The book is very well written, very romantic, intense without any lack of propriety, and witty. The characters are very true to themselves, and I loved the fact that Elizabeth realizes she is in love with Mr. Darcy in the middle of the book. I always like when I read a story where she is also in love with him in the book and not only in the end.
If you’re expecting a lot of sex scenes, this book is not for you. It does not have a single one. If you’re looking for something intense and romantic, then this is perfect.
It’s for sure one of the best JAFF books I’ve read…but then again, it is from Kara Louise, so that was expected :)
I decided to end my summer with a Austen and Austenesque jag. I reread P&P and re-watched the 1995 version, and then decided to bury myself in variations. I picked this up ages ago because the author's Darcy's Voyage is a favorite of mine, but hadn't yet gotten around to reading it yet.
The concept seemed a little silly, and in practice, it was a lot silly. I kept giving my suspension of disbelief more rope in hopes that somehow how I would get there, but it didn't really work, which in a way is too bad. The book is genuinely funny--Darcy acting like a pirate is comedy gold, but the whole effect is wildly out of character. I also found the writing more uneven in this one, which was disappointing.
This certainly isn't the worse variation I've read *cough, cough* , but I can't really recommend it either. 2.5/5.
I loved Darcy as a pirate. Swinging with Elizabeth in his arms from ship to ship was so romantic. Lizzie got to know Darcy a little better before she finds out his true identity. Can Darcy rescue her from the notorious pirate, Lockerly? I also love a great sword fight and Lizzie is as feisty as ever. I couldn't put the book down and lost a lot of sleep finishing it. Definitely worth reading.
I have to admit, I was not expecting much from this book. I thought the whole concept would be hard to do well. I am more than happy to have been wrong. I have not been on such an exciting adventure with my favourite characters since Jan Hahn's The Journey. Who would have thought… Mr. Darcy as a pirate…?
Fitzwilliam Darcy, tormented and haunted by the indignant words of Elizabeth Bennet’s refusal of his hand, is in the depths of despair. Living in a room near the docks of London, he hasn’t shaved or trimmed his beard in almost two months. Mistaken for an escaped pirate, Darcy is taken into custody and put in a cell. Unless he can convince someone of his true identity, he could be headed for the gallows. This does lead to some tense moments and is the beginning of Darcy’s adventure… and what an adventure it is!
Darcy agrees to impersonate the infamous pirate, Lockerly, to aid the police in his capture. True to character Darcy treats his crew fairly and with compassion. He inspires their respect, admiration and willingness to do anything he asks of them. Darcy hopes beyond hope that this impersonation will aid him in forgetting the woman he loves. Little does Darcy know that his wild adventure will take him directly into the path and arms of Miss Elizabeth Bennet.
As fate would have it, Elizabeth Bennet and her father travel to the Isles of Scilly to visit Mr. Bennet’s ailing sister. Elizabeth enjoys visiting with her much loved cousin, Melanie, and meeting a new handsome cousin. Will David Adams be the man Elizabeth could love or will Captain Smith win her heart? But what is there about Captain Smith that seems so familiar?
Much to my delight Darcy and Lizzy spend much time in the company of one. Although they are not thrown together in the beginning, as the necessary events of the story are unfolding, their first meeting is well worth the wait. The dialog is excellent and the chemistry is electric.
This book has it all…adventure, intrigue, pretense, romance, betrayal, love, even Lydia and Wickham and much, much more. The masquerade ball toward the end is exquisite! There was nothing I did not like about Pirates and Prejudice. I have been eagerly anticipating its release since I first learned about it in September 2012. It is outstanding and lived up to my expectations. I will be reading this one again and again! Thank you, Kara Louise for another exceptional book!

After reading Falling for Mr. Darcy and loving it, I was encouraged to Pirates & Prejudice. Like many others I was slightly skeptical about the concept but I trusted my referrer so I got the book. It was a wise decision.
This is simply a wonderful P & P variation. Following his rejected proposal at Rosings Mr. Darcy falls into a funk, he sends his valet away and skulks the London waterfront avoiding human interaction while pondering the words Miss Bennet spat at him while naming him "the last man on earth". In this dismal state he is captured and hauled to the police mistaken for an escaped pirate.
Mr. Fitzwilliam Darcy of Pemberley is forced to spend a few days in a cell, accused of being a vile pirate who is late for a date with the hangman. Once his true identity is determined the police ask for his help to lure the real pirate by impersonating him. Darcy agrees to help. At first I thought that strange but upon consideration it is perfectly reasonable that Darcy would assist, he is nothing but generous in the source material.
While Darcy is preparing for his role of a life time in secret, Elizabeth is preparing for a visit with her father to a small group of islands in the English channel to see an aunt who is ailing.
During her visit Elizabeth meets a woman long regretting a declined proposal, a young man who seems to like her and Pirates. While Darcy is his role as a pirate is running a ship for young men of little skill but good intentions.
This is a book full of interesting detail, exciting twists and turns and lots of surprises. It is an enjoyable and compelling read. I really liked how both Darcy and Lizzy came to reconsider each other but examining their own behaviors and prejudices.
I have read all of Kara Louise's books and enjoyed each of them and I'm always pleased to see a new one published, but I could not understand how on earth she could wangle events for Darcy to become a pirate, however it was a clever idea, playing on his sense of honour and decency at a time of his life when in the depths of despair. This is not zombies or vampires or another fantastical scenario but a possible (even though improbable) event. It is pure fairy tale, but so is Pride and Prejudice. I love the romance in Kara Louise's books. Darcy and Lizzy stay true to their characters; Lizzy remains feisty in the face of adversity and Darcy is the true hero whilst still showing his vulnerable side where Lizzy is concerned. You can feel the passion without blushing! We don't see much of Georgiana but I like the relationship portrayed between the siblings. I will no doubt read this one again when I feel in need of a bit of fun.
I absolutely loved this book, seeing Darcy in a new light and the dynamics behind Darcy and Elizabeth'a budding relationship. A must read!! I could not put the book down until I finished reading it! I have read most of Kara Louise's other books so I knew the excellence I should expect, but she totally threw me off with having Darcy as a Pirate. But I fell so in love with Darcy as a pirate, and that he was able to she'd he well-ingrained 'polite society skin' to interact with Elizabeth and other below him to see another side of society. This definitely showed Darcy as the 'knight in shining armor' for me. Boy would I have been swooning if I was Elizabeth!!! It is a must read for any and all JAFF readers.
Oh what a fn version! Darcy is so distraught over Lizzys rejection of his proposal that he takes to drinking, avoids shaving and cutting his hair and looks like a wanted pirate after two months. He is taken to prison and when the authorities are finally convinced he is who he says he is they ask him to continue to impersonate this pirate in the hopes of capturing the real one. At e same time Elizabeth and her father have travelled to the isles of Sicily for a family visit and on the return home are accosted by pirates. Darcy comes to the rescue and Elizabeth finds herself drawn to Darcy although she know him as Captain Smith. I loved this side of Darcy, I loved how certain things about Captain Smith were familiar to Elizabeth. I loved reading about the inner feelings of Darcy/Captain Smith and Elizabeth and wondering when she would realize who he really was. And when she realizes who he is what it will mean for both of them as there is now another suitor for Elizabeth's affection, Lydia still gets herself in trouble and you know that the real pirate will catch up with all of them! One of my favorite scenes was during a masquerade ball and that's all I will say! U have to read it yourself! Anyone who loves Pride & Prejudice variations will love this one! Written In a style true to Austen and always staying true to their original characters. Enjoy!
OK this book was a bit crazy. Putting Pride and Prejudice together with pirates!! But I really liked it. It kind of had Pirates of the Caribbean vibes to me and I love those movies.
The Pros: Its a different take on what happens after Elizabeth refuses Darcy's offer of marriage. You see a different side of Elizabeth's family, its her fathers side of the family, and there are Pirates.
The Cons: I can't really ever get behind the way some writers make Darcy sooo devastated from Elizabeth's words that he completely goes out of character. I know what she said hurt him but in this case he is like letting his hair grow out and stumbling around places to (no spoilers here because you learn this pretty fast) but to be confused with a pirate?!?!? Not sure I buy into that one.
However the rest of the story was fun. I really had to just go with the story. There were some cheesy parts but it was still a good read and that is why I'm giving it 4 stars.
This book was a great Pride & Prejudice Variation with lots of interesting characters and a very entertaining plot that grabbed my attention and made it difficult to put the book down. I also loved the epilogue at the end of the story. I look forward to reading more by this author.
This was indeed a fun little read! I only wish it wasn't Darcy and Elizabeth. At some points I simply wondered if Lizzy would really do what she did and if Darcy really would do what he did and it just felt so far away from Jane Austen. But then I just gave them different faces and said their names and situation are just coincidally the same as the ones from Pride and Prejudice and that's when the whole thing got so much more enjoyable.
When I read about the synopsis I had a wild Lizzy in mind, sailing the ship with a Captain Darcy that pretends to be some rough pirate for whatever reason. Let me tell you, that's not it. No wild Lizzy, no confident pirate Darcy. While it went totally different than I thought, I completely enjoyed reading this book! The story moved quick enough, the distress the characters were put in were understandable but not cringe worthy. And the romance is good, which is what I read it for. Darcy is as awesome as ever, Lizzy was a strong girl like we are used to, just that she was a bit more...feminine? I mean, she always was a lady, kind of, with good enough manners for her time. But her constant blushing and looking up shyly felt a bit out of place sometimes.
In the end for all my complaints there was something that made up for it and I knew that there would be things I wouldn't like completely because with a book like Pride and Prejudice, there will always be someone that doesn't like the way you see the book and characters and use them in your stories. Since I still enjoyed the book and story as they were, I can give it a solid 3* rating and a warm recommendation to everybody who just longs to read once again about Darcy and Lizzy and how they get together - in a new, different and exciting way. I do not recommend to read this if you do not at least know the movies of Pride and Prejudice, because there will be many things lost for you, things you could laugh about and also information about who some characters are.
Pirates and Prejudice is a rather unlikely but charming tale in which Darcy, wandering London desolate for months after Elizabeth's refusal of his proposal, is mistaken in his scruffiness for a infamous escaped pirate and is thrown into prison. The next day he is released on the condition that he impersonates said infamous escaped pirate in order to capture him so that he will hang at long last. He even learns to speak roughly and to walk with a swagger to his step.
Meanwhile, Mr. Bennet and Lizzy set off for the islands off the coast of England to visit Mr. Bennet's dying sister and her family. On their return trip with Elizabeth's cousin David (who seems to like her quite a lot), their ship runs aground on rocks during a storm, and Elizabeth and some other passengers are captured by the real escaped pirate, but they are soon rescued by "Captain Smith" (Darcy in disguise). Elizabeth likes the abrupt and roughly-spoken Captain Smith who seems familiar to her, but she can't place the resemblance. More adventures ensue, and I'll let you discover the rest. It's a wonderful tale of adventure and derring-do!
