The second issue of Elves series introduces us to the Sylvan Elves, or Wood Elves, and a new part of this superb fantasy world. Sylvan Elves and Humans were allies once, but when Druids were brutally killed, the relationship between them worsened, and Elves hid in the depths of their forest. Now, years later, Orcs are on the move, taking the Human world city by city. King's daughter decides to look for help from Sylvan Elves, but guided by one of the Sylvan Elves, she discovers long-forgotten secrets that could help rekindle the fire of elvish-human friendship. The story had its moments, more memorable than the previous issue, and it has gorgeous art, which is something we're already used to from these fantasy series from Humanoids. I liked how they used Peter Jackson's vision of Elves with those deer horns.
Excellent! A great story about the White Elves and their past partnesrship with the Humans. Once there used to be human druids, but now there are none. The Elves have withdrawn into their forest and none may enter. The humans of Eysine, City-State of the East, have always observed respect for the ancient laws between Elf and Man. Now, faced by a horde of Orcs, Llali, the daughter of the King of the city, decides to remind the Elves of the treaty that previously linked their two peoples.
She undertakes a journey to become a Druid and reminds the White Elves of their honor. Great art, great story. This French comic series is top-notch. Taking familiar aspects of fantasy settings and creating something new and good is always nice. Kudos to the French for creating a great series that may be under the radar of many in America.
Elves is a groundbreaking graphic novel created by Jean-Luc Istin and Kyko Duarte. The first volume consists of the first two issues of the Elves: The Crystal of the Blue Elves and The Honor of the Silvan Elves. The two stories are not connected even though they are happening in the same universe.
The Crystal of the Blue Elves
Blue Elves are elves closely connected to the element water. They build cities and live on islands. They build great fleets and are the primary rulers of the sea. On the other hand, there are also humans who resent the Blue Elves for their power and are quite bloodthirsty. After an Elven city of Ennlya has been massacred, a Blue Elf named Lanawyn and her human companion Turin must investigate who has caused this great tragedy leading them into many dangers and possibly even costing them their lives.
The Honor of the Silvan Elves
When the human city of Eysine has been attacked by orcs mercenaries, the king's daughter Llali endeavours into the forest ruled by the so-called Forest Spirits, who are actually Silvan Elves, to seek their help in driving the orcs away. There she meets a Silvan Elf who realises the power she carries and together they try to bring back the good that the world has almost completely lost.
I have immensely enjoyed this graphic novel! The art was astounding, what I liked the most about it is the fact that it was slightly different in both The Crystal of the Blue Elves and The Honor of the Silvan Elves, but at the same time it kept its beauty. The difference in the aesthetic of the art and the colour pallet only contributed to the story that was told. The only critique I have is that I wanted a bit more. Not because I feel the story was not well branched out, but because I wanted to dive into the presented world much, much deeper!
I must say I enjoyed the second issue, The Honor of the Silvan Elves a bit more. The characters were as if they were made out of flesh and blood. I could empathise with them and the end made my eyes water.
I simply loved traveling through this fantasy world filled with such magnificent beings. It felt like going home to Tolkiens Middle Earth, but also in the same time it felt like I was discovering a whole new world. I wholeheartedly recommend this graphic novel.
I received this book in exchange for an honest review.
Elves receive a special treatment at Soleil Productions, the French publisher of comic books; an entire universe is dedicated to these legendary creatures with five different writers and five different artists to tell their stories. I’m not sure if with the five teams behind the tales the intention of the publisher was to have five albums in this series, I am only certain that number was surpassed and we are talking of an ongoing series of comic books. But without getting ahead of myself, after the first volume, “The Blue Elves’ Crystal”, written by Jean-Luc Istin and illustrated by Kyko Duarte, here is the second, “The Sylvan Elves’ Honor”, with a script by Nicolas Jarry and art by Gianluca Maconi.
A group of city-states driven only by mercantile intentions seek to seize the rights of customs held by the city of Eysine, but when they refuse to wield under their pressure an army of mercenary orcs hired by the group besieges the citadel. With no allies left to stand by the city of Eysine Llali, the king’s daughter, decides to seek help from the sylvan elves, retired within the forests. Hoping to awaken an ancient alliance between the humans and the sylvan elves Llali meets Yfass, an elven hunter, who leads her to his people.
The second book in the Elves series is titled “The honor of Sylvan elves”, this is a French series translated into English. As the series say Elves, these are fantasy series, each volume is based on one of the different kind of elves species, this one introduces us to Sylvan Elves or the Wood Elves. Each of the volumes is standalone and can be ready as such.
This volume has a different author and illustrator from the previous one, it shows both in the content and the artwork and I for one fell it’s a better work this time around.
The plot (4/5) although it seems simple, there are enough intrigue and backstabbing in store to keep it interesting. The storytelling is a fast paced page turner.
The art (4/5) it is better than the previous volume which itself was good, still, I have read better work from the same publisher and author based on stories in the same world only with a different artist.
The Word building & Characters (4/5) I liked it, they explored different regions, got into the culture and history of the elves and best parts the characters are likable and complex. It’s very much a character-driven story.
The story and the characters seem like a prelude to some legends and mysteries. I like the setting so much. I like this story even better than the first one. The artwork is amazing and fits the story perfectly. I wish this graphic novel was more known and easier to get to the readers! I t certainly deserves more attention!
This is really new for me, out of my comfort zone let's say, but I really appreciate this and will continue. Still trying to fins my way between all these elfes and others. Drawings are very beautiful. I took some time to appreciate them before reading.

A human kingdom, abandoned by its allies, is besieged by orcs. Its princess sets out on a last-ditch mission to secure aid from the woodland elves, who centuries before had fought alongside humans.
The story begins with this princess unconscious, menaced by an orc. An elf named Yfass rescues her and we get intermittent flashbacks to fill in the backstory. Much of the political detail is dry and irrelevant. The bottom line is that the girl has magic ability which makes her a potential Druid. Yfass believes that if she can become a Druid, an alliance between humans and elves can be reforged, like in the old days, before the Druids were massacred. So the two set out on a diplomatic mission to convince the elves to train her as a druid.
SPOILER
But it doesnt go well. The other elves are hostile. Yfass forces his will and embarks with the princess for the high council, but the king elf has the girl assasinated. It turns out it was the elves who killed the Druids and broke the alliance centuries ago, because they feared the power of human Druids. It hasn’t worked out though, because the humans are more dangerous than ever. Yfass, enraged and disillusioned, vows to honor the memory of the princess by fighting alongside the humans, even if the struggle is hopeless.
Meanwhile the humans have been battling against the overwhelming tide of orcs. Hoping against hope for relief to arrive. The king has perished and his son has taken over. Yfass arrives and fights valiantly but he is also killed.
Meanwhile, shamed by Yfass’ valor and sacrifice, the wood elves decide to aid the humans. They arrive and destroy the orcs. A tree is planted to serve as Yfass’ grave, symbolizing the tentative new alliance between woodland elves and humans.
The story drags for long sections — too much talking and politics, but the ending redeems it, with a large battle against the orcs, heroic deaths, and improbable triumph. Everything is wrapped up nicely. Overall, the plot has many similarities with Romeo and Juliet, in that star-crossed lovers, by their doom, bring estranged families together.
A diplomatic mission to secure relief is a solid premise, but the plot would have benefitted from simplification. Give more room to the art, include more action sequences, more time to the main duo.
Art is inconsistent. There are some bad faces and weak expressions. The best drawn elements are the orcs and the large scale battle scenes.
I loved this graphic novel. It was all about druids and how the fells lost their connection to nature. The elf thought he discovered something special. He was willing to do anything for that opportunity...
He said the blame was with the fells, little did he know that the fells didn't murder their druids, others did. Even though she came with a purpose and she couldn't get it herself. She gave everything to help the fells...
Gorgeous artwork and engaging storytelling permeate this fantasy tale of romance, valor and tragic sacrifice. Lots of twists and turns and a thrilling conclusion.
