Adair Bartlett was always a good girl. A devoted daughter, a straight A student, and a future graduate of one of the most prestigious medical schools in the South, she has more going for her than she'd ever dared dream.
So why, then, does her life still feel so empty?
She doubts she'll ever find an answer to that question. Even a once-in-a-lifetime trip to Italy can't dispel the bleakness that tugs at her soul. Still, she presses on, determined to live up to the standards set by her family and friends.
Only one man understands what she needs.
When she stumbles inside a hole-in-the-wall leather shop in the back alleys of Florence, Adair never expects its shopkeeper to take such an interest in her. He swears to help her find the happiness she so sorely craves, and when he straps an exquisitely crafted necklace around her more-than-willing neck, she finds herself helpless to say no.
Little does she know the future he has in store for her is just as dark as the priceless black pearl hanging from her neck.
Kidnapped and sold to a man who's language she can't even understand, Adair's life becomes a lesson in submission. Collars and chains are her new clothing. Her every waking moment is spent learning to become the perfect pet and plaything to a man whose touch she both fears...and craves.
She has to escape. Freedom is all that matters. But as time passes and the man she knows only as Master opens her eyes to the pure joy of total submission, she's left to wonder whether true happiness lies in the life she left behind or rather at the end of her master's leash.
HIS BLACK PEARL is an erotic novel featuring BDSM themes including slavery, bondage, pet play, pony play, male on female, and female on female sexual interactions. This is a work of fiction meant for an adult audience.
JENA CRYER is a true Southern girl who loves grits, cornbread, and lots and lots of leather. Originally from Mississippi, she and her husband now live in Texas. HIS BLACK PEARL is her debut novel. When not writing, Jena enjoys reading, traveling, and getting tied up by her husband.
After Milked by Royalty story, I decided to read more by this author. This is another totally dark and twisted story that involves kidnapping and forcing and pet-play. No experiments this time, but a completely forcing in changing of the main character's way of life. Towards the end the reality and the fantasy are totally distorted and unclear. The story is given by the girl's POV. I wish we had also master's POV, because I felt he was watered down and he was lacking a strong personality.
There were elements of this books I quite liked and I would have given it a higher rating except for a few VERY disturbing things in it that crossed the line from dark erotica to just upsetting.
Wow, this was a really good debut novel. Jena Cryer is a name to watch and I loved her story though would be horrified if it was reality. I read through the night and couldn't put it down.
Main character Adair finds herself in receipt of a beautiful black pearl courtesy of a seemingly caring kind shopkeeper. However, a sequence of events finds her abducted and taken to live in a place where everything including language is alien. She finds herself treated as a pet, a puppy, with a strict trainer and loving caring Master. Will she escape her slavery? Does she really want to escape? What is this place she finds herself at?
Without giving too much away, I like the way Jena leads the reader and shows them what a mindfuck this place is. It horrified me by consequences and geography as much as attracted me, by some very erotic play scenes with Adair as Master's pet. I like the way the writer looks at the psyche of Adair, her crisis and what happens through and after, and how nothing is how you thought it would be or would end. I think we shall see a lot more of this place Thrall that Jena Cryer has created.
Thrall, meaning captive, slave, controlled, being in someone's control and power...in every aspect, yet there's a love story too, for the right submissive, of course.
Has to be 5 stars from me. Good standard of English, and has been edited. Look out for it being in next years BDSM BOM list:)
My my. What a deep, dark and utterly depraved story did I just finish? I am slightly stunned by the raw, unyielding, in your face elements of this book. I felt something very primal, very real and annoyingly plausible taking over me while I ate up the pages. I was never one for pony play, but I know my place as a pet a little too well... and realizing how easily I could see myself in Adair's place just flat out crept me out!
Have you ever felt like every single thing you have done in your life has been to make someone else happy, and told yourself their happiness is more important than whatever you felt while performing the act? What if your whole life has been lived for someone else? Adair feels something is off in her life, but dares not search further... until a twisted shopkeeper shows her what lies beyond her gaze. Master's eyes are always soft, caring and deeply understanding. Like a puppy taken away from its mother and introduced into a new family, Adair finds herself completely conflicted. She is not a dog, damn it, she is a human being...
How would you feel if someone you didn't know forced on you the choice you always wanted but never knew how to make? Did they just deprive you of your free will, or exercise it for you, effectively taking you down the road you would have walked yourself, if you were truly free?
There was a feeling of something eerie, almost supernatural, around the time Fury showed up. I won't say more so I don't spoil anything, but I was amazed by how I did not see that plot twist. I have to admit though, that was also the part where the book started going a little south for me. I don't know why, but I felt it lost its touch, its appeal or if you will, its glamour (as much glamour as a pet-in-captivity story could ever hold). I am not claiming that up to that point the book felt realistic (though I know it could very well be, I just choose to push that thought out of my pink cloud of safety), but that point kind of screwed it up for me.
However, the scene right after that, the reunion of Reunions, was so damn cute, and the addition that followed was heart-melting sweet. I felt so absolutely heart-broken about Priss though, and shed a tear for her. From intrigue to anger to humiliation to love to shock to fear and back to love, that was a wonderful journey. Well done, Ms. Cryer, I can't wait to read you again.
This was a pretty good book I thought that the pet play would be to much for me, but it wasn't. This was my first time reading this authors work and found rather hot. Adair is traveling in Italy when she is abducted and transported to an estate where she is forced to become a voiceless, puppy-like, pet girl for a particularly handsome, loving Master. The book was told from her POV she was a virgin who became addicted to the forced pleasure that she receives. The book took a weird turn for me when Adair ran away and she saw that all the women in that town are treated like pets walking with masters on leashes or as ponies. Adair found herself in a herd of women running in the woods naked pleasuring each other. Adair realized that she will never return to her old life and that her life with her master was better than she thought it was the book was a good read.
Got to give props to Ms. Cryer for writing a plot in which there is such wide scale subjugation of women AND doing it without the help of aliens, a dystopian theme, or changing the time period, future or past. The slavery was extreme to the point of being prohibited speech, walking upright and, most of the time, even using their hands. There's even a little side action pony play described. What's more amazing is that even with all that, the explanation for the 'how it's possible' is plausible. I loved this book. Adaire (Isa) has an amazing, though sometimes sad, journey from independent to slave with the help of White Coat and Master. I can't say much about the story w/o ruining it but I will say that I was surprised by a plot twist at least twice and that's a rare and beautiful thing. The hot factor is off the charts as well. 5 sinfully sexy yet subjugated stars
What a wonderful erotic, pet girl adventure this book is! I recommend it!
Adair is traveling in Italy when she is abducted and transported to a marvelous estate where she is forced to become a voiceless, puppy-like, pet girl for a particularly handsome, loving Master.
OK. I have a love/hate relationship with M/f TPE (Total Power Exchange) stories. I generally really love the submissives but develop a strong hatred for the domineering Masters. Often an author will try to make the Masters seem noble in some way, but most often it does not work at all. Somehow, though, this novel almost gets away with it… at least, it comes the closest of any book I’ve yet read.
After her abduction, Adair exists in a mysterious world. She does not speak the language; the geography is unfamiliar. She makes the same assumptions about her captivity that I, the reader, made. Over the course of the novel those assumptions start to be knocked down as things become almost surreal. I really enjoyed that trip! She goes through the “standard” pet training scenes, but the emphasis in this novel is her mental transformation - not a series of scenes where the character is set up to be punished. And sure! The sex is well written and explicit, but this book does not dwell endlessly on the mechanics of the sexual activity. The reader is propelled along by the plot. Awesome! And pet play aficionados will find the content erotic regardless.
Have no doubt! This is not a happy little tale. This is dark and disturbing. Even more so than most, I feel. Perhaps I am reading a little too much into the story, but there are an abundance of comparisons between Adair’s current pet girl circumstances and her Southern Baptist upbringing. Enough to make you wonder if the author is using this erotic fantasy to make a statement about the treatment of women in the real world. Be a good girl! Be subservient! Be domesticated! Are these not similar to many expectations that have traditionally been expected of women and enforced by certain religious communities? Like I said. Perhaps I’m reading too much into this, but still, the story is elevated in my eyes by the possibility.
I loved this novel and will happily spend more money on future works by this author!
Like many reviewers, I am very impressed with this debut novel. It isn't comfortable, but it is without a doubt riveting. On one hand I couldn't put it down, while on the other I was reluctant to keep reading for fear of what would come next. A rather odd combination, and something like trying to read with one eye closed.
We hear this story through Adair's point of view entirely, and for the majority of it through her thoughts. I'm not generally a big fan of first person narratives, but it really works in this case. The reader doesn't know what is going on because Adair doesn't know, and we learn the truth as she does. In my opinion, this added to the emotional impact of the story as it unfolds.
I read this book in large part because it will be a Book of the Month in March, and it was recommended by a good friend. I'm very much looking forward to this discussion, because this story is sticking with me - so many questions!
I was very surprised and APPALLED, and quite freaked out by this book to tell ya the truth! Is it a bad book? HELL NO! FAR FAR from it!! It was AMAZINGLY APPALLING!! A few years ago I am sure I would have read this very same book and HATED IT, but that just isn't the case anymore. I guess I have gotten a tougher skin. I would suggest this book to those who enjoy darker read. Those whom enjoy reading the hot naughty fantasies that every woman has but few truly desire! It's for sure worth a read!
Wow. This story was very hot. Once I started it, I couldn't put it down and finished it in one sitting. Loved the entire adventure of watching virginal Adair spiral from terrified kidnapped girl to becoming and loving her new identity as slave pet girl, to the point of actually craving the depravity seen around her by others. Some of these stories can be so ridiculous with the woman flipping too fast into sex craved monster in the first couple of chapters, but this story wasn't like that. It was a slow metamorphosis, and well worth the anticipation.
This is one of the best capture-fantasy books I have read. It was both terrifying and erotic at the same time. The pet-play was off the charts, panty melting hot! Who knew being treated like an animal could be such an erotic ride? Certainly not me.
The author does a nice job of fully painting each scene for the reader. I felt like I was right in the kennel with our little captive. Oh the humiliation and total erotic ride we go through in this book! What I liked so much was the relationship that develops between our captive and master. This made the story endearing and much more erotic for me.
I really liked the creative bondage in this book. Read it and you will know what I mean. Just wow! There is a little f/f sex play, but it didn't detract from the story and in fact was totally necessary for the story's development. Bottom-line, this is a well-written exotic ride that you may want to take more than once.
Wow, if this is a debut novel, I can't wait to see what Jena Cryer can do once she get's some experience! This book was fantastic and an interesting take on the genre of kidnapped girls made into slave-pets. It shows a very strong voice and, set in the 1st person perspective of the new slave, takes the reader along on her journey from an unhappy free woman to a treasured pet who must decide for herself if that is what she truly wants.
This one was recommended to me by a GR buddy. I read this one all the way through although I almost DNF'd a couple of times. Just didn't get into this one and I will not continue with the series. My honest thoughts? There are grammar issues and misuse of words in places. This is probably written by a guy in the "Thrall" of his own fantasy. 1.5 rounded stars.
"No woman would ever want this. It's slavery. It's vile. It's evil. It's the complete opposite of everything precious and wholesome in life."
Cover 4 stars
I would by this book looking at it's cover. I would have guessed BDSM romance, D/s type of thing. I don't like a few things after reading the book, her earing, her shirt and the lack of a pearl at her neck. I like the play with the black and white picture with the yellow of the title.
characters 5 stars
This book has one major character IMO, that is the female. The way the author take us inside Adair's mind is amazing. I can totally understand and connect with her, even though I could not relate, because this was so far out from my reality.
plot 5 stars
It's amazing. The best pet-play book that I've read. It totally dehumanize the person. The world built is rich, is well explained and we are not left with any holes.
It's very intense. It's breaking and reshaping a person. It's something so far away from my reality and belief that drew me in.
Pet-play is something that makes me really uncomfortable. It's not something that I can ever place in my fantasies. I've read many books on it, I've like many of them, but it's never something that I can relate or even connect with. So, this book was not an easy read for me, but it was so fascinating. I love to read things that make me uncomfortable, that takes me out of the ordinary. It kept me wanting more. It had the right amount of suspense and it kept me guessing and hating and loving. ;)
sex heat 4 stars
I'm not a big fan of f/f, but the scenes didn't made the book worst for me. It made sense in the story being portrayed. Some good scenes, no amazing heat, but good. I've missed a tail and some game back door.
originality 5 stars
Pet-play, dog-play, it's not original, but the way Ms. Cryer presented was. It was such a dehumanization without "real" body transformation that it was incredible.
editing 5 stars
I don't remember that many mistakes.
Impressions and Opinion
This is the kind of book that you finish and you are still uncomfortable. It's shocking!
It's something that I could never do. I would hate myself forever. But the author is such a GREAT writer that she made me understand and connect with Isa.
I'm really looking forward for Jane Cryer next book. If you like pet-play, you MUST read this!
HIS BLACK PEARL is the story of a young woman whose life is forever changed when she's abducted while vacationing in Italy. Prior to this trip, Adair had been content..... happy. But was she really?
Adair's abduction erases the future she'd planned for, forcing her instead to learn to live as her new Master's pet. As Adair transitions from her former self into this new, completely submissive role, she experiences feelings she'd never dreamed possible and is exposed to people, places and cultures so bizarre that some border on being fantastical. Through her experiences and adventures, she learns who she really is and what she truly wants.
Stories of forced sex slavery are common yet Adair's journey and the way Cryer tells this tale make this book quite unique. Because Adair is not permitted to speak and her Master speaks a language she does not understand, there is barely any dialogue in this book, another unique trait. Reading Adair's thoughts from a first person point of view made me feel as though I were literally with Adair.
Why I didn't give this book 5 stars: -Excessive use of the word God (used 100 times in the eBook I own) and repetitive use of terms such as, "Lord help me" and, "For God’s sake". -I was a bit confused about the major event that occurred towards the end of the book. Otherwise, I was impressed with Ms. Cryer's writing style and her creative story. I enjoyed this book and will definitely be reading more of her books in the future.
Wow This book is absolutely amazing. I couldn't put it down!, you watch as an intellectual woman is reduced/ compared to animal life. This book takes you to places you never feared to go...yet are compelled to go. I loved it..great stuff, can't wait to read more!
Liked but didn't love. Found it to be not as dark as I thought and actually quite a love-story. I will be reading further books about Thrall to see where it goes. At the moment it seems a very one-sided hetereo-sexual island in that I see no mention of male ponies or pets but that may change.
Having read several other works by Jena Cryer previously, including two in this series, A Calling To Thrall and Milked Into Thrall, I went into His Black Pearl with pretty high expectations! I had discovered through her other books, the world of Thrall to be a rich tapestry of conflicting emotions woven from a fabric of dark eroticism that is completely captivating! This book was every bit of that and more! One of those rare "I can't put it down" kind of works that has you enchanted from the very beginning all the way to the end!
His Black Pearl is the tale of a young woman that from all outward appearances has everything going for her in life. However, inside she is lost and empty as everything she is just happens to be the result of pleasing others not herself. On a chance encounter during a trip abroad to Italy, the young woman, Adair, happens into a small leather shop looking to buy a souvenir. Sensing her personal distress, the shopkeeper offers Adair a simple rough cut stone upon which he instructs her to make a wish. Wanting to pacify and humor the charming old gentleman, Adair complies and wishes to find happiness. The old man drops the stone into a potion of his creation and then pulls out a large black pearl which he affixes into a finely tooled leather collar and gifts it to the girl. Though she initially accepts the gift, she endeavors to return it after she learns that the pearl is real and of a tremendous value. While there returning the collar, Adair soon finds herself drugged, bound, stripped naked and soon to be shipped off to a destination unknown!
This is the start of Adair's journey of self-discovery which ultimately leads her to forced sexual servitude on the darkly erotic island of Thrall, where men rule absolutely and women are slaves stripped of their humanity and forced to serve the sexual needs of their Masters under the guise of being animals! Upon awaking, Adair finds she has been transformed into a leather clad "puppy girl" with no hope of escape. She learns she has been reduced to a piece of property with the only thing remaining of herself being her mind and that submission and compliance are not only her only means of avoiding harsh painful punishment, but are also the source of untold pleasures unlike she has ever known!
What I enjoyed most about this book was Adair's inner turmoil! No I am not a sadist reveling in this poor girl's suffering! There is an inner conflict in Adair that she must come to terms with as everything about this place both appalls and thrills her at the same time. She has a Master that has taken away her freedom, her life, but at the same time he is powerful and handsome and he showers her with affection and pushes her to the heights of ecstasy. Ultimately Adair must decide, does she want to return to the life others have created for her or does she desire the peace, freedom and pleasure that she has discovered through her complete submission?
All-in-all I think this book is absolutely brilliant! While there are clearly dark erotic elements which include abduction, forced sexual slavery, puppy play, harsh punishment, forced lesbianism and sexual acts of a dubiously consensual nature, there is also a very romantic side to this story that emerges as Adair comes to terms with what she truly wants. Throw in a plot twist or two and what you have is a really great read you will want to read again the second you finished!
Wow, this is the second book I read from this writer. (Or actually the third, but the first one was the introduction to the whole collection, so I count it as one.)
I couldn't stop reading in this book. Adair is on a trip in Italy after her graduation. A graduation from a medical school she choose to pleasure her parents, especially her mum, because she didn't know what else to choose. In Italy she asks herself if she is really happy with the way her life is. At that moment she walks into a leather shop and is offered a wishing stone. She wishes happiness and she gets it in an unexpected way.
The shopkeeper gives her a black pearl. When she finds out the pearl is real she goes back to the shop thinking she misunderstood the shopkeeper since she got it for free. He tells her it really is a present and he still wants to make her happy. She doesn't dare to say no when he invites her in and lets her smell something and rubs it in her skin. She can't move good after that and is kidnapped and brought to her master. A master with a language she doesn't understand. She learns quick some words during her training. A training to make her a good submissive for her master.
This story is dark at some points, sexy and although the creature she is turned into is a bit of a weird fantasy but I think it is a hot one. The village is also a surprise to me, I didn't expect it to be the way it is. There were some more surprise in the story for me. Things I didn't see coming.
That was amazing - so happy when a book completely blows me away!
We a our heroine who is on a trip with her cousin following her graduation from college. They are supposed to stick together always, that is the conditions her strict parents, but of course they separated one afternoon. This is where things go awry for our heroine and her new journey in life begins
We start with her in a crate remembering the events that brought her to this moment. When she arrives at her destination, she meets her Master and White Coat. The Shopkeeper who brought her there is the only one who speaks English to her, but that is okay, because she isn't permitted to speak, stand or anything else human. Only her thoughts remind her who she is and what she is as she adjusts to her new surroundings
She has always been the good girl, doing what she is supposed to all the time, so she concedes to most things rather quickly. Not because she wants to, but because it is expected that she does and she wants to be good
The change from this mindset to wanting what is offered is the story of the book. It is not straightforward and there are some surprises and bumps along the way. That keeps it interesting and different, it doesn't follow a straight pattern that you would expect.
Definitely want more from the situation and the authour as this was a perfect gem that needs to be exposed for how good it is!
I was intrigued and curious after reading Belladonna's review, so I decided to give it a try. It was my first book ever with pet play...... surprisingly, unbelievable, strange, different... and I really liked it. Naar aanleiding van een review (Dark Erotic Pick it for me Challenge) dit boek opgesnorkeld. Apart verhaal. Absoluut intrigerend!
What did i just read. This book was an absolute mind f* . I would give it 5 stars for just being so mind blowing but I also want to give it 1 star for how much I hated every party of it. The book was so addicting that I binge read the whole thing but it out of horror not excitement. Thsi book is Literally my worst nightmare! I feel mislead buy the summary. The main character is captured and becomes a slave on an island. Thats not what bothers me. What bothers me is she literally becomes a pet (dare I say - a dog). Im not one to kink shame but it sickened me how extreme it was. Kennel/Loss of words/ no voice/ no standing only crawling and worst of all atrophy of digits due to lack of use. All very extreme to me and made my stomach turn, but wow was this book a thriller and just mind blowing. Never have i read a book like this. I really enjoy dark romance but this just was a whole other category that my mind can not wrap itself around. By no means was this a bad book like I said overall 5 stars but it was just sooo far from my tastes that I found myself feeling sick and cringing the whole time just praying for a different outcome. Read at your own risk.
This book is well written and I respect the fantasy. I respect every fantasy everyone ever has as long as she/he is not hurting anybody without their consent to hurt them. And this was crossing the line a lot for me.
Spoiler: I feel his grip on my own hands, and when he unbuckles my mittens, his smile widens as he sees how my fingers hang unresponsively from my palms, their muscles long since atrophied from all the months of being trapped beneath the pressure of those gloves. “Good girl.” He pats my head. “No need fingers now. Fingers just get in trouble.”
I could never ever and I would never ever forgive smn for ruining my fingers or any other part of me. I love my fingers. I love drawing, knitting, origami I love all the things for gentle fingerwork. And this is just something I would have never tolerated for anyone's fantasy. This is as the author herself wrote, sick. And I kinda liked the story even tho this is not my kink. But from this part I wanted to vomit so bad. Author did made me feel things. Reading this part I felt truly and terribly disgusted. Thank you for the book.

2.6 stars Nahhh fuck this dumbass adair bitch, she’s sick in the head.
I absolutely hated her, couldn’t stand her. Indecisive, although i do understand why and so on. But like bitch make ur mind already. And the AUDACITY to smack Fury in the jaw AFTER SHE SAVED U?!… nahnahnah i lost all the “sympathy” i had for her. Absolute savage :)🔫.
Flax deserved so much better than this manipulative whore. She used her love for her, to make her obedient and submit to her man and trainer. Not only that but the whole ass epilogue made me mad as hell, the way she talked about the new woman (slave) being kidnapped. And the thing with Flax usage of her legs (standing up) and if Fury was still alive —> if she submitted to one of the men and made into an animal like herself..
Fuck i fckn hate adair “the victim”…🔫🔫 nah fuck that.
+why the f did the pearl not be mentioned more often, i feel like it just got forgotten. “iT wAS a pArt oF hER” fuck that. And what about her cousin?? She must be worried sick. The trauma must have caused her to not travel at all. And why tf did she not report the pedo grandpa storekeeper, she knew adair talked about a leather shop before her disappearance…
