Rate this book
The world as we know it doesn’t exist anymore. Humanity has retreated to the skies after being almost obliterated by the deadly Ghost Virus. Man-made islands floating in the troposphere house those that survived. The System, a new form of government, now controls and regulates everyone’s lives in an effort to preserve the human race.

Skyla Deep is not your average orphan in this sky born world; abused, neglected and in need of something the System doesn’t offer…freedom. Desperate to live instead of merely exist, Skyla runs away. She aligns herself with one of the notorious sects who control the outer edges of the islands. There’s just one problem. On an island this small you can only run from the System for so long.

As events escalate, Skyla will come to question all that she’s been taught to believe. She’s always felt the System wasn’t what it claimed to be, but wonders just how deep their treachery runs? And with the Ghost Virus making a reappearance on the islands, will humanity survive?

I received this book as a gift. My sister searched for the perfect book to fuel my literary addiction and I have to say she did not disappoint, nor did A.E. Field. I will admit, I’m not a big fan of dystopian novels however, this is one that I would recommend and not just because I share its name.

When I first started Skyla I really didn't think that I would like it. The blurb was interesting enough and the concept was something that really fascinated me, but I had been getting tired of these dystopian/sci-fi/romance YA books and really just wanted to read it and review it as fast as I could.

However, the moment that I began the book I was hooked. It turned out to be one of the most rivetting, dramatic and inspiring books I had read all summer.

The story is about a colourful character named Skyla who is quite a tough girl and rebels against every rule she comes across. She grows up in an orphanage on one of the island in the sky (made of sandstone and suspended using hover craft technology) that were established after a vicious disease called the Ghost Virus ravages the earth and kills a large percentage of the population. The survivors live on these islands in the sky called Atrium, ruled over by a harsh government called The System, whose laws are enforced by a brutal police force called the Sky Police, Sips for short.

Skyla eventually escapes from her orphanage prison where her life was controlled by The System and evades the Sips by moving to the Edges; the literal edge of the sandstone island she lives on where those that want to escape the law live. There, she meets 'sects', which are basically like gangs.

After being attacked a few times, she joins a sect called the Fray, led by a boy called Ranger, who she falls in love with.

After a few dramatic plot twists that left me in a pool of tears, the book finishes on a cliff-hanger that leaves you wanting more.

I loved 'Skyla' and I feel so privileged that I was able to read it for free in return for an honest review. It surpassed all the expectations I had for it and became one of my favourite books.

The only reason I am giving it four stars is because there were a few grammatical errors (which will most likely be edited out) and I did start to dislike Skyla after the main plot twist because I feel that she moved on too fast.

However, I loved the relationship she had with Jey, so maybe I'm glad of that.

Either way, I would strongly recommend this book to any YA reader....it is quite fantastic.

Skyla is a brutal dystopian tale that takes place in the distant future following the aftermath of a deadly virus that has decimated the population. The remaining peoples are removed from the Earth to man-made islands in the Earth's troposphere and a new government called The System is implemented in effort to preserve the remaining human population. The story follows a young woman named Skyla Deep who was dropped off at an orphanage following her birth and raised from infancy in a very abusive environment until the day she decides enough is enough and she escapes. She subsequently takes up with one of the sects, or street gangs, and learns to survive on the fringe of society.

The tale is full to the brim with conspiracy, brutality, treachery, love, and heartache keeping me turning the pages to find out what was going on and how the story would unfold. The writing was clean with the world building ongoing throughout the tale and there is a great prologue that sets the scene. The characters were memorable and I found myself really liking Skyla who was a very strong and determined young woman. This was an emotional roller-coaster ride of a story and just my kind of tale. I do have to mention that the ending, while satisfying in part, is a cliffhanger thus the four star rating, so be aware of that going in; however, it is a tale worth reading for the darker dystopian fans. I did a bit of research into the availability of a second book in the series and as of yet have not found any information, but I certainly hope it's on the way as I cannot wait to read more about this world and Skyla's journey. I received this book from the author with a request for my honest review without any compensation whatsoever, other than the joy of reading a new book.

*I received this book for free as part of a goodreads R&R program.

An interesting imagining of life after earth.

Characters: Skyla
Setting: Post-apocalyptic Earth
Sexual Themes: Minor themes

After the world is infected with a deadly virus the last chosen of humanity must ascend to the skies to fight for their survival high above the Earth's surface. Skyla follows a young woman, born a orphan, and abused by the government she grows up hating. After many hardships she must decide who is on her side and just how corrupt the government she fears has become.

With the writing style being the way it was and the minimal adult themes, this would be a great book for a YA. There is a fair bit of violence and brutality from both governmental bodies and civilians, so parents be aware of that. Skyla is a broken and beaten youth, who learns the world is not as she once believed it to be, she grows and matures as the story progresses, and even with her occasional temper tantrums she is an interesting character to read.

Recommendation: This is not a difficult read, the light romances and interesting conspiracies wrapped up in adventure is a fun read that is great for an afternoon.

Disclaimer: I received a copy of this book in exchange for my honest opinion.

I liked the flow of the story, thoughI thought there could have been more story. I feel like I read a lot of pages but nothing happened.

Skyla was a decent heroine, but I could have used more insight to her. She would declare something about not taking any more crap from XYZ, take action, get beaten, and then promptly change her course of action. It found it a little confusing, since I didn't really understand her mentality.

The premise is interesting and more or less believable. I'm hoping because this is the first book, the second book will be better. I think the narration would have benefitted from a 1st person POV.

I was given this book by the author for my honest review.
“Everything is hazy, like fog has settled over my eyes. Ranger stands in front of me, his eyes wide with fear. His expression confuses me. Ranger is never scared.”
My favorite quote from this book. I love the fact that A.E. Field jumped right into action right off the bat. Starting off in an orphanage and having a tracking device in your body. Running away and never looking back. Meeting Ranger and falls in love, then to more action and being thrown into The Nothing. I really don’t want to put out too many spoilers so you definitely need to read this. Can’t wait to continue the journey with Skyla!!!!!

The world Skyla lives in is not the stuff dreams are made of. Growing up in an orphanage and desperate to escape. One night she makes exactly that happen using her wits and determination. She flees to the outer edges of the island and joins up with a group of others who also have their own reasons for escape. This story is full of suspense. It will engage you to the end and leave you wanting more of this story. Find out for yourself what is the ghost virus and how did it reappear again on the man- made islands that were created for the survival of the human race. A well thought out story and it grabbed me from the first page. I can't wait to read more!
