For Wood, Fawn Island is not merely a charming wilderness hideaway. From its pine forests and rocky shores he contemplates the nature of neighborliness and independence, of community and solitude. Together with his stories, his original illustrations capture the poetry and mystery of the landscape. Through humor, reflection, and anecdotes, he shares the beauty and spirit of his beloved island sanctuary with all of us.
Composer, recording artist, wilderness guide, and self-taught naturalist-Douglas Wood is perhaps most widely known as the highly acclaimed author of OLD TURTLE, a 1993 ABBY Award winner and an International Reading Association Book of the Year. Author of several books for readers of all ages, Douglas says he is always seeking themes that are universally significant to both children and adults. His first book for Candlewick Press, GRANDAD'S PRAYERS OF THE EARTH-winner of the Christopher Medal for "affirming the highest value of the human spirit"-quietly explores the theme of grief and healing while celebrating a human connection to the natural world and the enduring spirit of love. Douglas Wood kept in mind someone very special to his own life when writing GRANDAD'S PRAYERS OF THE EARTH. "I feel I've been getting ready to write this book all my life, for it is about my wise and gentle hero, my Grandad. It's a prayer and a thank you, a walk in the woods, and a remembering smile; and it is for anyone who has ever had a woods to walk, a prayer to whisper, a hero to love."
Douglas Wood lives with his family in a log cabin on the banks of the Mississippi River in Minnesota.
This book feels like sitting in a canoe and feeling the world around you. It feels like swaying in a hammock in the shade of a tree with the breeze playing with your hair. It feels like laying in a sun beam listening to the birds sing.
I had this on my shelf for quite sometime. I purchased it at an Author's signing. I was interested in Douglas Wood because of the children's books he wrote, Old Turtle and Grandad's Prayers of the Earth. I had purchased both many times for gifts. I loved them because no matter what age you are those books can speak to you in a very special way. I certainly was not disappointed in Fawn Island. Although it takes place in heart of northern Minnesota, it reminded me so much of days spent at my sister's home on a lake in northern Wisconsin. Especially during long walks in the morning and treks out on the lake. After reading this book I will spend even more time thinking about life and it's purpose during those walks and time on the lake. Douglas Wood is indeed an awesome author whose words touch a person's soul!
I have read this aloud to Scott as we drive over hill and vale on our journey to the lake. It gets us excited with anticipation to commune with nature to PAUSE. A great start to my retirement. Then plan our trip into the BWCA. THANK YOU Douglas Wood for articulating the wonders of the North.
