Still stinging a year after being dumped by her boyfriend for a fast-talking, black-clad, high-heeled New York writer, Dawn Lawson decides to leave her calm, predictable, obviously boring life behind and try life in the fast lane for awhile — and popular NASCAR driver Eric Davis is just the man to take her for a few laps around the track. She just wants some laughs with no commitment, but can she keep from falling in love with a man with an unexpected gentle side? Or will her heart hit the wall at two hundred miles an hour?

I’m an author who had a somewhat unorthodox upbringing. I was raised in South America and the Middle East, and wrote my first stories as a teenager in Kuwait, where my sister and I proved it really is hot enough to fry an egg on the sidewalk. I wrote my first novel in three months on a typewriter when I was 21, I used every romance cliché possible (including amnesia — need I say more?), and never rewrote anything, which is why it’s so much fun to pull it out occasionally when I need a good laugh. I wrote sporadically until my youngest child (who is now 18) was two, when I decided it was time to either actually start writing, or to stop saying I was a writer. So I took a class and started doing the scary things that writing requires. Now I’ve written about twelve novels and several children’s books.

Typical of this series. Although it is the third book it can be read as a stand-alone. Enough information is given on the characters from previous books that I never felt lost. I have read the series before, but I don’t remember a lot about the other books. As I said though, not knowing the other stories really isn’t much of a problem for this one.

This book lost a star because of the immaturity of the couple. True, they’d both been hurt before, but a bit more communication would have gone a long way. (Although having never been in the same place they both were, maybe it isn’t emotionally possible to open up more than they did.)

Ok, so I think this is the first romance that I've read where the heroine tells the hero, "I hate you, and I hope you die!" and it cracks me up. Especially in light of the response of a secondary character that follows.

The basic plot is not new and pretty predictable, and this being my 3rd book by the author, I'm starting to see some repetition in the characters & even a few of the lines they say, but the stories are still entertaining & a definite cut above the average. Recommended!

Clean romance level: almost kisses & sweet kisses

A wonderful, clean romance with an oil splattering of fun!

What does a first grade teacher and a successful race car driver have in common? Not much but a super ramped up romance with lots of conditions. Did I mention it's a lot of fun clean romance? Grab your favorite lawn chair and sun seeds as you drive into this little gem.

Beth Lawerence is tired of being the good girl. One year later, she's still smarting over being dumped for a fast-talking, exciting New Yorker. Beth cuts and colors her hair, gets a new sexier wardrobe, a flashy red Mustang, a new job at a race track, and a new dating philosophy. Beth is going to have fun!

Beth has never paid attention to professional racing, that's her cousin Angie's department! On her first day at her new job, Beth meets racing legend, Eric Davis, and for some reason he singles her out to be his professional tour guide/driver. Can Beth keep up her new "exciting persona"? Does she even want to give Eric a chance to race circles around her heart?

I loved this book! I found myself relating to Beth, I too, know nothing about racing, besides what I've learned watching Disney's Cars. The setting was fun. I loved Eric. He was like a little boy in his enthusiasm. I loved how he flirted with Beth. He had me laughing many times! This was a relationship I was definitely rooting for.

Besides the main characters, I loved the side characters. Beth's racing fanatic cousin, Angie, was a hoot. I hope we get a book or novella about her! Beth's mom was sweet, and I really loved Eric's dad because he called Eric on it when he was temporarily an idiot!

My Spare Lady is part of the Chick Flick Clique series. It takes place in the same town, Aspen Grove, California, that Pride and Precipitation and Royally Blonde were set in. That being said, I don't think you need to read the books in order. You catch a glimpse of the overlapping characters, but they weren't central to this story.

Content: clean (just some kissing and evasion of the long arm of the law)

Oh. My. Word. There are some interesting, entertaining characters in this book. Beth and her speedster ways were highly entertaining to me. Our hero, Eric Davis, was a well rounded. The other supporting characters were quite adept and enjoyable. I seriously don't know how Heather Horrocks thinks of all the laugh out loud moments in her novels. This book was no exception. There are also plots twists and settings that enrich this story, the makeover, the chase scene, the office girls and too many others to list.

I love this series of books. Each is a humorous stand-alone and also a great collection. Thank you Heather Horrocks for another great addition to the chick clique.

This was a fun, quick read. I've read several books by this author so it was pretty much what I expected it to be. A diversion, brain candy (no thinking involved). It was romantic and light. The characters were engaging. I'm about as clueless about car racing as Beth. Actually, maybe more. Eric was such a sweet guy, always thinking of Beth. The use of "darlin" every time he opened his mouth about drove me nuts but that may just be a personal peeve.

There were a few instances of mild swearing (I think). And a happily ever after ending. ;)

Light romance written clean and funny. Another reader on this site referred to My Spare Lady as "mind candy" which is an excellent description of reading that demands nothing intellectually other that a suspension of disbelief.

I am embarrassed to even admit I read books like this, but as long as I am confessing: I also occasionally indulge in reading People Magazine. Gasp! Behind every stuffy English teacher is a love for some fast food reading.....(Well, behind this teacher anyway. But come to think of it, no one accuses me of being stuffy.)

Heather does a really good job with light-hearted, clean, romantic fiction. This story, though not my favorite of hers, is a fun escape. Just the right thing for a weekend camping trip, which is exactly where I read it. I am disappointed that her books are not in my library. I have to buy all the ones I read of hers. At least on kindle they are not very expensive because they are fun when you want a few hours of relaxation.

Made my heart race!

Beth decides to change her speed from mellow to high on life. Her family doesn't know what to think of her. The champion racer likes what he sees! Will she give him the time of day? Definitely a book you can't put down until you reach the finish line!

A cute book with Beth as an introvert and Eric as an extrovert. Eric gets thrown in Beth's way because her mom wants him to stay at the house as a guest to take care of him with his broken leg from crashing his car in his car race. It all turns out great in the end.

Opposites attract?

I actually don't think they are really opposites, but that was a good start. It's the ways that you are compatible that matter.

Cute. But she drove me crazy. She thought the dude wouldn't like her if she wore jeans and a tshirt. Ugh. So shallow. It did get a little wordy for me.
