Kate Bloomfield’s werewolves were an unexpected favourite of mine last year, and I was really hoping that this sequel would prove to be just as shockingly wonderful as ALPHA GIRL. Rose now finds herself on the run with Tom, a man who’s not only twice her age, but also a convicted sex offender, and a recent jail escapee. The first couple of chapters were a rush with police chases, car theft, shoot-outs, and helped to further reinforce the taboo-ness of the protagonists’ love story. The plot could have gone in so many directions after that what with Stone having possibly turned a prison guard, and the rumours surrounding an Alaskan pack. Instead, the author decided to split the duo up because of a rookie mistake that any eighteen year old with a smartphone should be aware of, and then a government conspiracy thread surfaced which has become so predictable in this genre that it’s practically a cliché.

Rose and Tom’s student / teacher relationship was disturbingly irresistible in book 1, and readers had to come to terms with its many prohibited facets; however in LONE GIRL Bloomfield pushed things too far in my opinion. I’ve reluctantly accepted the age difference and weird power dynamics, but in this installment Stone mentioned that they have yet to use a condom. I realize that this series isn’t intended for younger audiences, and that the author enjoys pushing all kinds of no-no buttons, but why go there? I was ok with all-of-the-above, yet the blatant disregard of practicing safe sex, especially given the circumstances, was just plain irresponsible and unnecessary. Not to mention both of the characters’ blasé attitude towards teenage pregnancy. It certainly didn’t add anything to the story, and only succeeded in pissing me off.

The cops uncover their whereabouts because Rose ignores Tom’s warning about the authorities being able to track them via her phone, and after the whole condom thing, this pushed the heroine into too stupid to live territory. I understand that she's young and naive, but what teenager doesn’t know this? Then Stone gets pissed at Goldman for being a kid—newsflash she IS a kid—and then abandons her on the side of the road. Now we have not one, but two TSTL characters. Crappy parental figures is a personal hang-up of mine in the Young / New Adult genres, and Rose’s mom and dad were real winners in book 1, and continued to impress in 2. The poor girl gets into a car crash while hitchhiking home after her lover ditches her, ends up in a coma for sixteen days, and her mother refuses to take her back. So, Goldman moves to California with her father, things go horribly awry during the full moon; her dad buys a one-way plane ticket to Alaska, and wishes her good luck finding the pack. Wow.

I have yet to say anything positive about this novel, and you’re probably wondering why I gave it 2.5 stars. Well, it wasn’t all bad, we learn some interesting things about this universe’s werewolves including that they don’t all share the same abilities, and that heightened senses aren’t necessarily a guarantee. Also, born wolves can’t change others, and only 2% of those bitten actually survive their first shift. So yeah, the mythology’s original, the plot had no major holes, and the writing/editing was good. You’ve most likely already guessed at what awaited Rose in Alaska because as I mentioned, the government angle was foreseeable to a fault. There was however, a couple of curve balls thrown in towards the end, and the story concluded on a cliffhanger. URGH! I’m undecided as to whether I’ll be continuing this series, but if it’s slated to be a trilogy I just might because I’ve made it this far.

LONE GIRL fell victim to the dreaded sequel syndrome, so here’s hoping that WILD GIRL will be the cure.

4-4.5 Stars!

A lovely read! It unfortunately fell short of the level of enjoyment I was hoping for in the 2nd book, but it doesn't mean I didn't enjoy it at all! Let's go into a shortish review about my take on the story:

Characters
If you haven't guessed already (or read the synopsis for that matter), we, of course, focus on Tom and Rose. We're still only in Rose's POV, but we also still have a generally good idea about Tom's intentions and whatnot. I disliked Rose a bit more here than in the 1st book because, as someone mentioned earlier in the review, or her choices during their escape. Just for the record, my dislike for her doesn't affect this book's rating as Rose's decisions are for just purely subjective than objective reasons. In fact, even though I wasn't a too big of a fan of how it was demonstrated, I think the poor decisions (or at least the huge major bad decision she made) was a good way to remind us that she's still a only 18. Yeah she's seen and been through a lot of things that have made her older, but she will inevitably make mistakes like the innocent young girl that she truly is. Despite her moments of ignorance, I still very much enjoyed her as much as book 1 (if not more). She's certainly gotten a lot more bolder and braver when Tom is involved. It's those little moments that remind us that she's more than an Alpha by technicality of who turned who.

As for Tom, I loved that he still fiercely loves Rose. His love for her doesn't turn him into someone exactly braver and bolder in the same way Rose was, but rather braver and bolder in a chivalrous kind of way that I unfortunately can't directly say without spoiling it for those who haven't read it yet. There were tiny glimmers of him being in charge, but, for the most part, I'd say he was the beta to Rose's alpha. Specifically when it came to making the big decisions between the two (at least until one major turning point). Like Rose, you too want to smack him on the head for a bad decision he's made, but what's done is done. At the end of the day, you're still on both of their sides, rooting for their metaphorical HEA.

Plot
Loved the ideas, but iffy on the execution. My only gripe is that it was too short...or rather just shorter than what book 2 deserved. I think the plot map of this story is fantastic (I certainly enjoyed the twist), but was disappointed at the speed it was given to us.

Romance
I really enjoyed it! Probably a lot more than the 1st book. Not to say that book 1's wasn't good at all, just that it was even better than book 1. Kind of like book 1's romance being a delicious chocolate chip cookie and book 2's romance being a delicious chocolate chip cookie with the fantastic addition of M&Ms...if that even makes sense? ANYWAYS, I enjoyed the relationship. It didn't develop as much as I hoped it would, but there are some issues that are addressed (though not exactly resolved) that certainly tested their relationship. When the two weren't having their doubts, their easy going relationship was, for the most part evident. Their passion for each other was also evident and I certainly enjoyed that part ;) The hots they have for each other could certainly light a candle!

Overall, I really enjoyed the story! A very VERY minor gripe is that some parts were a bit predictable. I'm not sure if it's because I've read enough fiction stories that I know what to look for, but some parts that hinted at what was to come felt like a clear wink wink to me. Another minor gripe is that there are things left unanswered . Normally unanswered questions are a big gripe for me, but I'm giving Ms. Bloomfield the benefit of the doubt in that some of the ones I pointed out aren't essential in being answered or will be answered in the next book. That's right. The next book. Which I absolutely CAN'T wait for!

For those who've read the 1st one and loved it, I definitely recommend picking this one up! Again, my only huge gripe is that is was shorter that what the story needed, but I think you'll at the very least like it for the most part. If you don't do well with cliffhangers, I still recommend you read it...but just wait to read it once book 3 comes out. Just get book 2 now, put it on your glorious e-book shelf, and admire it until book 3 comes out where you can dive into book 2 and not have to wait for the suspenseful conclusion for one long year (or however long Ms. Bloomfield will take to craft #3).

That being said, thank you Ms. Bloomfield for another wonderful book that will have me tearing my hair out in suspense until the next release! I will be praying to the Book Gods for a speedy book 3 release.

....What happened with this book?

I really wanted Lone girl to be amazing but it just...I don't know...

Listen. I very much enjoyed the first part of the book with our good old Rose and Thomas tandem. It's the second half that wasn't really up to par.

The first story was unique not only because of the love they shared (Ohh the feels ^^) but also because of the fact that having a pack leader who's not only female but also considerably younger, brought forth a rarely explored dynamic in werewolf fictions. This book could have been wholly original and I just feel like she lost that thread in the second part. Seriously. The plot could have gone in so many directions...So why? Whyyy Bloomfield? That whole (BIG SPOILER ALERT!!!) only works if it's done skillfully. This was a half-assed attempt at best and an unnecessary one in the grand scheme of things.

Plus, the fact that Rose kept making unbelievably stupid choices didn't help either.

Oh, and did I mention that the book ended on a...wait, drum roll please...CLIFFHANGER?

Yep, when it rains, it pours.

I really hope the next book gets better.

Update 1:

Finally a new release date! It's vague but still...I'm excited and more than willing to wait :)
______

It's the 2nd of november and yet there's no sign of the book being sold anywhere ????

Arghhh!!! It's driving me nuts! Please I need my Rose and Thomas fix!!

I'm done with this series! The first book was interesting and nice to read. But didn't work me, reading the "Lone Girl". Rose is still too immature, her actions are really childish and i can't stand how naive she is during moments that are totally dangerous and suspicious! And Thomas is so weak and he has no action! All the time he is feeling bad about everything! And both just make things get worse! The lab thing was such a cliché! It was such a dragging and boring reading!

La historia da un giro que no esperaba, quizás en otras circunstancias no me hubiese gustado, pero considero que está bien redactado. Dan ganas reales de saber que viene.

Really liked the first one, this one had some extreme scenes which there was a warning so I knew but was left a little uncomfortable and disappointed with the unknown at the end.

Rose ran away from home with her lover Tom. being her formal teacher and almost twice her age, Tom was being hunted by the law for kidnapping his student. the duo was initially determined to make their relationship work despite being on the run, but when Rose secretly kept a smart phone in her possession, she ruined the trust Tom had for her. after a painful decision, Tom decided to leave Rose, freed her from the danger he put her in. the duo later met at the Silver Moon facility. It was originally advertised to be a free environment for all werewolves to live. but upon arrival, they realized that it was a facility that experimented on the werewolves.

having loved the first instalment, I was slightly disappointed the moment the story ended up in a facility. while being on the run presented potentially interesting happenings, the labs often went down one path. after the introductions of different groups of werewolves, I allowed myself to hope. different interactions could create different outcomes, but unfortunately, that aspect wasn’t explored and I was led down the exact hallway that a typical plot usually ended up in when it came to labs and experiments. despite the lack of surprises, the book remained a fast read and had me interested in the coming instalment nonetheless.

Eagerly waiting for the next one !!!!!

I love your writing Kate because I really can get into it... this book had me wanting more, like any book should do but... in this case it felt like a passing through. Although silver moon real intentions have been partially reveal... it felt like a lot happen and at the same time nothing did. It felt choppy sometimes and rushed. I still recommend this reading and I'm certainly waiting for the next installment of this book... still hope that what Dr. Kent was saying about Tom was a lie!!!

I wanted this book to be better, but it fell short every time. Even the author didn't seem to be paying attention, at one point she completely forgets that Rose played volleyball in gym class previously. At the end it just seems to cut off, I get cliffhanger endings, but this was like a chapter ended.

An improvement from the 1st book, it wasn't as predictable as Alpha Girl, but it was still hard for me to like the characters and to understand the principles behind their actions. Curious to see how the 3rd book will impact the series and juggle the consequences of Rose's actions at the ending of Lone Girl.

I know rose is young but she is a little annoying. Maybe its an alpha thing. Good second book full of love, dead battery, police, trucker's, crazy people!!! And an ending I didn't like but when #3 comes out I will read

What is the first thing in you think of when you think about love?

I can't believe how fast I read this story. I was enthralled. The story pulled me in and I was there with her till the end. It was well worth my time and I can't wait for the next one to come out.

To čo bol za koniec! Potrebujem pokračovanie a to hneď teraz. Príbeh bol rozhodne lepší ako prvá kniha, ale ten epilóg... Niekto vie, ako sa píšu vražedné konce.

All I am going to say is that there better be a Tom again. Either he is so badass he is immortal or they are lying to her. You better had not gone Divergent on our asses...
