Juliette or, the Ghosts Return in the Spring
A vibrant tableau of small-town life as seen through the eyes of a woman returning home from Paris.
Juliette boards a train from Paris and comes back to her hometown hoping for a low-key visit with family and old friends. What she finds is anything but. Her sister, a caregiver and mother of two, is carrying on an elaborate affair with a man from a costume shop. Her parents, separated, are now estranged. Father is sure he’s coming down with Alzheimer’s, though it’s more likely that he’s simply getting old. Mother, on the other hand, revels in the second act of her life as a free woman, an artist with a show at their local gallery to prove it. Slowly, Juliette finds herself entangled with the unlikely Georges, a dyspeptic alcoholic who is stuck in his life. These divergent paths inevitably cross one another against a gloriously painted backdrop of eccentric small-town living.
Jourdy’s beautiful watercolor pages provide an unfeigned mileu for the subtle dramedy at hand. All too real human emotions, bittersweet and relatable in their rawness come together to form a poetic realism.

October 27, 2023Juliette é um livro com uma história tão simples que o seu poderoso efeito choca o leitor.
À espera de voltar a casa para uma visita calma e aconchegante, Juliette embarca no comboio de Paris rumo às periferias. Mas aquilo que encontra, ao chegar, está longe de ser o que ela esperava.
A vida familiar, os mal entendidos, segredos e paixões que habitam o lar são abordados por Jourdy com naturalidade e realismo através de um belíssimo conjunto de aguarelas que evoca a corrente impressionista, e fazem de Juliette uma obra de arte madura, emotiva, divertida e sensível.
Acabou por ser uma leitura inesperada e que vale realmente a pena.

Me declaro fan incondicional de Camille Jourdy. Estaba convencida de que nada de lo que publicase posteriormente se acercaría a la maravilla que es Rosalie Blum, y aunque esta Juliette no me ha gustado tantísimo, quizás porque el impacto de lo novedoso se pierde, me parece también una obra genial.
De nuevo tenemos una historia del día a día, cotidiana, con detalles que recuerdan a Rosalie quizás, por el tono, por el humor, por las situaciones surrealistas que hacen prácticamente imposible no soltar alguna sonrisa, con personajes cercanos con los que es fácil encariñarse a las pocas viñetas, que necesitan un giro de 180º en sus vidas, algo perdidos.
Y luego está ese dibujo algo naif que le va como anillo al dedo a la historia y me encanta, lleno de detalles y color.

De Camille Jourdy me interesa muchísimo cómo, al contrario que la mayoría de autores de cómics, decide que sus historias no traten sobre hechos o personajes extraordinarios sino sobre la suma de vivencias cotidianas que constituyen las vidas anodinadas y costumbristas de la inmensísima mayoría de la humanidad. Me gusta que sus historias incluyan rifirrafes familiares; que sus personajes sean del montón (bajo); que en las conversaciones se hable sobre dinero o cuidados; que la soledad, la mediocridad y la infelicidad planeen sobre sus protagonistas como también planean sobre cualquiera de nosotros, sus lectores. Y todo esto lo cuenta con unos colores vibrantes, preciosos, de una intensidad casi de cuento infantil: y esta dicotomía enriquece mucho la obra porque la vida también es un poco así.
Juliette es una joven prometedora aunque frágil que vuelve a su pueblo porque necesita un respiro. Y allí se encuentra con un padre cada vez más huraño, una hermana con su vida patas arriba y una madre disfrutando de lo que siempre se le había negado. Y conoce a un hombre, claro. El problema que le veo a este libro es que, mientras que todas las historias secundarias son interesantes, de la propia Juliette no sabemos casi nada: que es un poco hipocondriaca, que no encuentra su sitio y que es bastante infeliz. Pero desconocemos los motivos que le llevan a esas sensaciones o las razones que le han hecho volver a la casa familiar. A mí el cómic me ha gustado, pero me ha parecido que la timidez o la antipatía de la protagonista le ha restado interés. Y que ese es uno de los elementos que hace que, en mi opinión, no sea tan redondo como Rosalie Blum.

ne kadar hayatın içinden hikâyeler… dünyanın her yerinde olduğu gibi kardeşlik ilişkileri, annelik, babalık…
juliette’in zayıf diye her şeyden sakınılması, ablası marylou’nun ise herkesin ablası olmak zorunda kalması öyle tatlı anlatılmış ki. güçlü olmak zorunda kalana “ama sen güçlüsün” denmesi kadar insanı sinir eden bir şey yok, (daha dün bunu bürkemciğimle konuşmuştuk,) burada iki kızkardeşin de kendi durumlarından şikayeti hatta sık sık diğerinin yerinde olmak istemesi anlatılıyor.
ve elbette benim kalbim güçlü olmak zorunda kaldığı için 2 çocuğu, kocası, boşanmış ana babası, alzheimerli nenesi ve kendisine aşık olmaktan men ettiği ama pek de laf anlamayan manitasıyla uğraşan marylou’dan yana.
garip ve konuşmayan aile problemi fransız romanlarında sık rastlanan bir şey. burada dikkati en çok çeken şeylerden biri marylou’nun çaresiz ev kadınlığıyla etrafındaki herkesi de mutsuz etmesi. kabalaşması hatta. neyse spoiler olmasın ama dünyanın en dümdüz babası olabilecek babası bu konuya el attı sanki.
özür dileyemeyen, teşekkür edemeyen, özel şeyleri konuşmakta zorlanan, sevgisini gösteremeyen bu donyağı aile bana bizim aileyi anımsattı biraz :)) ama her şey değişebilir, unutmayalım.

4 de 5 estrellas⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (me ha encantado)
Es una auténtica maravilla esta novela gráfica, la calidad de los dibujos es impresionante, las tonalidades muy agradables y perfectamente ajustadas al texto.
Ha sido de esos libros que lees con pena porque se acaba rápido y encima te encanta tanto que no quieres llegar a la última página.
No le he dado cinco estrellas porque el final no ha quedado cerrado pero tengo la esperanza que eso sea porque hay Segunda parte, de ser así sin duda le daré 5 estrellazas porque las merece.
No os la perdáis aunque no sea precisamente barata, aún así, cuando la lees y disfrutas de las ilustraciones se entiende perfectamente porque tiene ese precio.
Es ideal para este verano.

A graphic novel for grown ups that actually feels like a novel, and in fact it's the first time I've put the "fiction" label on such a book (the memoir tag, on the other hand, I've put on many a graphic novel).
Juliette, a young woman suffering from anxiety, runs away from her life in Paris to return to her home town where she sleeps in her childhood bedroom at her father's house, roams the neighborhood and forms an unlikely friendship with a guy who hangs out all day at the local bar. Despite Juliette getting top billing, the book is as much about her older sister Mary Lou, who has stayed in the town, works part time as a house cleaner, is married with two children, and is carrying out a passionate affair with the proprietor of a costume store. The doings of the sisters' separated parents, and their grandmother who has dementia also complicate things. The story is bittersweet and sometimes funny. The art is lovely, and the book feels very French, in a nice way. even a small town which I think is meant to seem boring and provincial looks charming in these illustrations. Perhaps it's just because of the Frenchiness and because I recently rewatched Amélie for the first time in many years, but it reminded me a bit of that movie -- especially the bar/cafe scenes -- but with the zaniness dialed down to far more realistic levels. A garden gnome, as in Amélie, also features in the story -- coincidence? There was a brief Tintin reference which amused me.
Off to see if any other of Camille Jourdy's books have been translated into English....

This domestic drama is a bit mild but kept me reading along eagerly enough.
Juliette, an anxious and introverted young woman, visits her family in her hometown. Her parents are divorced and a bit acrimonious. Her outgoing sister is having an affair. And she meets a loser slob who she doesn't mind hanging out with. Bickering, slapstick and flirting ensue.
Side note: This is the third book I've read in the last month that has an out-of-nowhere cameo of the Pink Panther, and I'm not sure what the universe is trying to tell me with this weird confluence.

This might have been one of my favorite experiences of reading a graphic novel ever? It was the slowest I’ve ever moved through one which I think is to its credit. The plot content is arguably mundane but I was really pulled in to the lives of the characters. I loved the illustrations, from the tiny little details of people’s homes to the really beautiful full page watercolor pieces.

Rosalie Blum serisine bayıldığım Camille Jourdy yine muazzam sulu boya çizimleri, absürt karakteriyle kalbimi çaldı. Birkaç yerde kahkaha attım ki ben bir şey okurken çok zor gülen biriyimdir. İlişkilere, endişelere, hayatın saçma sapan tuhaf ve komik yönlerine dair nefis bir çizgi roman. Bayılıyorum kız sana Camille ❤️

Karakterler, mekanlar, planlar ve detaylar için de müthiş bir emek verildiği belli.
Gelgelelim, kitabın özellikle ilk yarısında konu akmıyor. Karakterleri tanıyor ve atmosferi özümsüyoruz tamam ama bu kısım bence sıkıcı ve fazlasıyla uzun. Girizgahtaki bu problemi aşmak için kostüm fantezileri ve ördek var aslında ama en azından benim için akıcılığı sağlayacak absürd/komik vb. unsurlar değildi bunlar.
İkinci yarıda bir şeyler yaşandıktan sonra hikaye az çok tahmin edilir ve gerçekçi bir şekilde sonlanıyor.

Ce fut vraiment un joli voyage dans un monde de poésie dans lequel on perçoit presque le chant des oiseaux. C’est ce mélange entre réalisme et poésie qui est si charmant chez Camille Jourdy et qui nous assure à chaque lecture une évasion et un doux plaisir teinté d’une touché de mélancolie.

Juliette tiene una depresión y en su entorno la hacen un poco de menos. Sin embargo, sabe que lo que necesita es volver a su tierra durante una época para desconectar.
Lo más gracioso es ver cómo toda su familia está incluso peor que ella pero no se permiten estar en la mierda.

Konusu, çizimleri, tiplemeleri, ince dokunuşları ile muhteşem bir çizgi roman. Bölüm arası sayfaları çerçeveletip duvara asmak istedim. Rosalie Blum'u da çok sevmiştim ama Juliette bambaşkaydı...

Aslında bir tavsiye üzerine yazarın Rosalie Blum kitabını arıyordum ama kütüphanede karşıma Juliette çıktı. İyi ki de tesadüfen bu kitabı buldum. Okuduğum en güzel grafik romanlardan biri olarak aklımda kalacak. Çizimler, diyaloglar, olay örgüsü, her şeyiyle çok güzeldi. Ana karakter Juliette'in ailesini ziyarete gitmesiyle başlayan hikaye, aile fertleri arasındaki sorunlara ve karakterlerin kendi hayatlarına odaklanarak muazzam bir hikayeye dönüşüyor. Bir grafik romandan beklemeyeceğiniz ince detaylarından, an'ların muhteşem anlatımıdan, karakterlerin iç dünyasına odaklanabilme becerisinden çok etkilendim. Hikaye başlarken trene binen yaşlı çifti hikayenin sonunda tekrar görmek gülümsetti. Rosalie Blum'ı da en kısa zamanda okuma şansım olur umarım.

Bu kitabı seyrederken (evet okurken değil, çünkü resmen seyirlik) kafamda “tumblr kızı” kelimeleri neon bir tabela şeklinde yanıp sönüyor. Öyle bir estetiği var. Hikayenin uzunluğu ve metinlerin fazlalığı, kurgusu biraz yorucu. Akışkan sayılmaz. Biraz karikatürize biraz mizahi biraz hüzünlü… Tam bir avrupa “slice of life”ı. Öneriler listesinde değil.

Juliette est le prénom de la fille cadette d’une famille. Elle est introvertie et angoissée et, pour essayer d’aller mieux, elle revient passer quelques jours chez son père dans une ville où elle a grandi et où réside le reste de sa famille proche, sa soeur et sa mère. Ce séjour sera l’occasion de faire de nouvelles rencontres, mais au sein de cet environnement dans lequel elle a vécu et qui a beaucoup changé, des souvenirs vont immanquablement remonter à la surface. Quant au sous-titre, Les fantômes reviennent au printemps, il a un double sens, mais je n’en dirai pas plus.
Cette histoire, qui pourrait sembler toute simple, est l’occasion pour Camille Jourdy d’évoquer plusieurs aspects de la famille et du lien avec elle qui évolue et se transforme lorsque les enfants grandissent et deviennent adultes. La famille est alors vue avec un regard différent, l’enfant devenu adulte réalise certaines choses qui n’étaient au mieux qu’implicites lorsqu’il était plus jeune. Il est alors amené à se demander quelle part de cet héritage il tend à reproduire. Il l’a voit donc vieillie, transformée et c’est à ce moment que s’opère la transposition, les enfants d’hier sont les adultes d’aujourd’hui qui ont fondé, ou vont à leur tour fonder, une famille. Ce que je décris ici semble évident, mais ça n’en reste pas moins un processus fondamental qui est évoqué dans ce livre avec beaucoup de sensibilité, un certain décalage et parfois un zeste d’humour pour dédramatiser le propos comme dans ce dialogue entre les parents divorcés de Juliette.
En ce qui concerne l’aspect graphique, j’en ai déjà parlé dans l’article consacré à Rosalie Blum et ce livre est en tout point similaire sur ce plan. C’est-à-dire, pour résumer, un style original doux et sensible qui s’accorde parfaitement avec cette histoire.

Cette histoire, qui pourrait sembler toute simple, est l’occasion pour Camille Jourdy d’évoquer plusieurs aspects de la famille et du lien avec elle qui évolue et se transforme lorsque les enfants grandissent et deviennent adultes. La famille est alors vue avec un regard différent, l’enfant devenu adulte réalise certaines choses qui n’étaient au mieux qu’implicites lorsqu’il était plus jeune. Il est alors amené à se demander quelle part de cet héritage il tend à reproduire. Il l’a voit donc vieillie, transformée et c’est à ce moment que s’opère la transposition, les enfants d’hier sont les adultes d’aujourd’hui qui ont fondé, ou vont à leur tour fonder, une famille. Ce que je décris ici semble évident, mais ça n’en reste pas moins un processus fondamental qui est évoqué dans ce livre avec beaucoup de sensibilité, un certain décalage et parfois un zeste d’humour pour dédramatiser le propos comme dans ce dialogue entre les parents divorcés de Juliette.

– Écoute je te trouve pourtant pas mal du tout en pédophile des années 80.
En ce qui concerne l’aspect graphique, j’en ai déjà parlé dans l’article consacré à Rosalie Blum et ce livre est en tout point similaire sur ce plan. C’est-à-dire, pour résumer, un style original doux et sensible qui s’accorde parfaitement avec cette histoire.

"Juliette" is a low-key family drama focusing on the intersecting stories of sisters Juliette (single, anxiety-ridden, and recently returned to her home town from Paris) and Marylou (unhappily married with kids and having an affair with a man who works at a costume shop), as well as Georges (AKA Polux), a depressive man who spends his time at the local pub. Juliette’s return brings her back into her family’s circle and the low-key but still emotional conflicts that are going on, involving her estranged parents, her sister’s increasingly complicated extramarital affair, and a budding friendship/romance with Georges.
I really liked this book, maybe even loved it. I found it to be a totally charming and low-key family/relationship dramady, which reminded me of a good indie film (perhaps like the work of Mike Mills, "Beginners" and "20th Century Women"). I see that the author Camille Jourdy’s previous book "Rosalie Blum" was already adapted into a film and I wouldn’t be surprised if this one is too. The art is beautiful, switching between a more light and and airy style (reminiscent of Pascal Girard) and more lush and warm painted scenes. The pacing is patient and the author allows time for silent passages that reward multiple readings, there is room to breathe and think. Small details in rooms and silent cityscapes abound.
The book is funny, heartfelt, and bittersweet, with complicated but not overly dramatic relationships that don’t go as might be expected. There are many moments that are genuinely sad and the cumulative effect is quite moving, I found. Highly reccomended.

Juliette offers a simple story, gentle pacing, and gorgeous art. It's a nice read to sink into, viewing Juliette's family as they slowly coalesce around her return home from Paris. Some secrets come out, but nothing dramatically revelatory. Life goes on. Juliette's small romance with a local man is sweet and honest, .
Don't come to Juliette looking for big swings. Come to it for cozy comfort reading on a cold night when its brightly colored art will make all the difference.

Instantanément devenu un de mes livres préférés. J'adorais déjà la plume de Camille Jourdy depuis Rosalie Blum mais j'ai encore mieux aimé ce dernier livre. Dessins superbes, personnages justes et poésie sensible du quotidien.

juliette’in hikâyesi ilk bakışta basit gibi: köklerinden kaçmış, kendi hayatına tutunmaya çalışan bir kadının memleketine geri dönüşü ama aslında bu sadece fiziksel bir dönüş olmayacak. :'') geçmişle, aileyle ve en çok da kendiyle yüzleşme yolculuğu. özellikle babasıyla olan ilişkisi beni derinden etkiledi. juliette’in babasına sürekli "raf al" demesi, aslında evde kendine bir yer arayışının sembolü gibi ama babası buna pek anlam vermez, "benim eşyalarıma yetiyor o plastik raf hehe", juliette tam paris’e dönerken babasının fısıldadığı "raf aldım" cümlesiyse beni 5 dakika önce zırıl zırıl ağlattı. zaten bizi bu detaylar mahvetmedi mi.... yine de seviyorum.

Juliette bir süredir listemde yer alan bir grafik romandı ve İngilizce okudum. Ben grafik roman, çizgi roman, manga, karikatür ve diğer çeşitlerde resimli, illüstrasyonlu artık ne demek isterseniz kitapları okumayı çok seviyorum. Özellikle farklı tarzlarda kendini gösteren kitapları da beğeniyorum. Juliette’nin kullandığı renkler oldukça canlı adeta bir bahar havası taşıyor özellikle çiçek desenleriyle. Ancak anlatımı tam tersi şekilde ağır aksak ilerliyor. Konusunu okumadan bodoslama dalmıştım kitaba bütün karakterler birbirine girdi kafamı karıştırdı. Sonra konusunu okudum ve bütün taşlar yerine oturdu 😄. Birbiriyle açık açık konuşmalara girmeyen bir ailenin üyelerinin hayatlarını anlatıyor. Bu ailenin hikayesindeki dram da kitap ilerledikçe kendini gösteriyor. Ben açıkçası çizimleri pek beğenmedim, hoşlanmadığım bir tarzı vardı kitabın. Kurgusuna da pek ısınamadım özellikle karakterler çok soğuk hissettirdi. Ancak yine de öneririm çünkü orijinal bir grafik romandı ve bir yerde de en önemlisi bu aslında.

3.5 stars. This quiet graphic novel has a simple premise: woman has mental breakdown and comes home to visit a family that is more complicated than she initially thought. I've definitely read graphic novels that do a better job of quickly conveying character, and that handle plot better. I did really enjoy the bright, cheery art style in contrast with the melancholy story, and I like the portrait this creates of slow, sleepy yet not entirely happy small-town life.

Gros coup de cœur pour ce roman graphique aux dessins doux et colorés.
Le message est beau, fort, un peu clichés des films français triste (la bd va d'ailleurs être adaptée au cinéma) mais à la fois réconfortant.
L'autrice à deux styles de dessins magnifique quelle adapte selon les situations. On découvre alors au fil des pages des dessins poétiques et divins qui suivent un texte qui fait monter les larmes à plusieurs reprises.

Dessins magnifiques, tout en simplicité. J'ai adoré me frayer un chemin dans ces épisodes de la vie quotidienne et de faire connaissance avec ces personnes attachants. Des scènes parfois très marrantes et qui nous font penser à des situations vécues. Mais un bémol pour la fin qui s'arrête net et nous laisse avec quelques questions.
