مع تعاقب الأجيال, ووصولنا لعالم تحتل فيه سلاسل الأفلام السينمائية من الأهمية بمكان أن يصبح لها جيوش من المراهقين المهووسين بها
فكان لابد من ظهور طبقة ما من شّراح وممجدين لهذه الأعمال, يقومون بشرح المشروح والمفهوم بديهيا, يبحثون عن العمق في القصص ليملئوا صفحات الصحافة ويكسبون قوتهم
ثم تطور الأمر ليقوم بالمهمة جيل ممن يسمون نفسهم "فلاسفة" بتقديم "شروحات فلسفية" و محاضرات عن كتب مثل "هاري بوتر" و "سيد الخواتم" بل وحتى "تويلايت"
ومنهم مؤلفين هذا الكتاب, فلاسفة لهم تجارب في الكتابة عن الأفلام الأكثر مبيعاً
يعلل محرر الكتاب هذا الفعل بأنه توصيل الفلسفة للثقافة الشعبية عن طريق هذه الشروحات, وهو ما نجح فيه المؤلفون في معظم أجزاء الكتاب, رغم أنه في بعض الأجزاء قام أحدهم بالنزول بمستوى الفلسفة لتوافق المعتقدات الشعبية, فصار يحوّر أراء تولكين ليصير كاثوليكيا مؤمنا لا يهرطق في أي شيء طوال الرواية !!

"حين اختار تولكين « ذهابًا وعودة » بصفته عنوانًا فرعيًّا لكتابه ، كان يدرك بشكل شبه مؤكَّد أنه يحاكي الكلمة اليونانية nostos ، التي عادةً ما تُترجَم « العودة إلى الوطن » . كان اليونانيون يرون العودة إلى الوطن سببًا للاحتفال ، وتأتي كلمتهم في اللغة الإنجليزية باعتبارها أصلًا لكلمة nostalgia ( بمعنى الحنين ) ، غير أنه بوسعنا أن نرى في ذلك غموضًا أكثر كآبة . بمعنى أن مشكلة الحنين أنه يحتفي بما « كان » على حساب ما هو « كائن » . إنه شكل من أشكال الحزن ، ثمنٌ غالبًا ما ندفعه لقاء إقدامنا على المغامرة والمجازفة من الأساس .
إن بيلبو الذي يقضي أيامه في الكتابة في منزل إلروند يغلبه الحنين ، حتى إنه — وللمفارقة — لا يستطيع أن يرى ، ولو بطريقة واحدة حاسمة ، أنه لم يَعُدْ إلى الوطن الذي غادَرَه . لقد غيَّرَتْه خبراته ، التي أبرزها عبء حمل الخاتم في العقود التي تلَتْ مغامراته مع الأقزام . لقد جرَّدَتْه من الحكمة الطفولية البريئة التي أدركها فيه ثورين ، البراءة التي جعلته ، على الأقل خلال فترة أحداث « الهوبيت » ، يتخيَّل أنه قد استطاع العودة
إن منازلنا الأولى تُحقِّق لنا الرضا والإشباع لأنها تحافظ علينا بكل مشاعرنا وأحاسيسنا الطفولية البريئة . وحين نغادرها نخاطر ببراءتنا ؛ فنحن نقايض شيئًا لا يمكننا استعادته قط بعدم اليقين .
فثمة مكافآت لترك المرء وطنه ثم العودة إليه ، ولكن هناك ثمنًا باهظًا لذلك أيضًا"

رحلة عقلية ممتعة، وإعادة اكتشاف لرحلة الهوبيت بيلبو باجنز في ضوء الفلسفة. الفصول منفصلة والمؤلفون متعددون، كلٌّ يتناول رواية الهوبيت (وأحيانًا كثيرة يتعدى إلى سيد الخواتم) من منظور فكرة فلسفية مختلفة. الترجمة بها الكثير من الأخطاء العامة والفنية لكنها لم تؤثر كثيرًا على الاستمتاع بالقراءة. بعض الفصول كان أكثر متعة من غيره، ومنها:

I admit that I didn't quite know what I was picking up when I opened The Hobbit and Philosophy: For When You've Lost Your Dwarves, Your Wizard, and Your Way.
At the time, I was three quarters of the way through The Hobbit for the umpteenth time, but because I was reading it to my daughters, the book felt both new and familiar. The Hobbit is not a novel that would have survived today's publishing world and the attention span of children is even shorter than that of adults. Even with a cast of dwarves, goblins, wizards, elves, a dragon and, yes, a hobbit, it's hard not to find something that is interesting to a child. Bring the story to a child’s level isn’t a stretch, though translating it into bite size portions for bedtime reading does help. The story feels written for children (despite the gravity that Peter Jackson seems to imbue on the story with dark and violent scenes of giant spiders, murderous goblins, and deadly orcs).
My girls are young: only 3 and 6. Even though both are children, they are at different stages of development and maturity. The 6-year old understands most of the plot, the character development, and remembers who is who (though sometimes the sheer number of dwarves and the paucity of development of any besides a few of them does confuse her when their names pop up). On the other hand, my 3-year old latches on only a few things, requiring that I “spice” the story up, so to speak, in order to keep her attention. For example, she stays interested when I create voices for the different characters, speaking deep and powerful for Thorin, meek but courageous for Bilbo, and confident but gravelly for Gandalf.
For a while, her favorite voice was Gollum’s. Only after her older sister explained that Gollum was the "bad guy" did she stop asking me when Bilbo was going to see Gollum again.
Pictures help, too, and that’s how we get to The Hobbit and Philosophy: For When You've Lost Your Dwarves, Your Wizard, and Your Way (after that protracted detour). After repeated questions on the distinctions between elves, dwarves, and hobbits (I dodged the “orcs versus goblins” question altogether), I headed over to the library to find a book of art inspired by the novel. Not a set of promotional photographs for Peter Jackson's movies, mind you, but art from the last sixty year or so years since the novel was published.
While looking for the art (perhaps I should review that one, too?) I found sitting on the shelf The Hobbit and Philosophy: For When You've Lost Your Dwarves, Your Wizard, and Your Way. I’ve read The Hobbit dozens of times, but somehow I’ve never spent much time thinking about the philosophy behind it. I’ve read more and thought more about The Lord of the Rings in that regards, mostly, I think because it comes across as a weightier book. The parallels with J.R.R.Tolkien’s experience and view of World War II are obvious, while The Hobbit was published prior to the war and was primarily aimed at a juvenile market. Like juvenile fiction in the modern era, though, The Hobbit is perhaps a far more interesting and deep book than it is often given credit for. In that regard, The Hobbit and Philosophy, which is a collection of essays by various contributors, approaches what is perhaps the most popular fantasy novel of the last century with a serious and, occasionally at least, playful eye.
Here you will essays on Tao, enlightenment, man’s place in society, greed, humility, glory, art and beauty, and more. Some are dry (after all, it is philosophy, right?), and others are light, playful, or inspirational. All are interesting and insightful.
I’ve already burned 600 plus words talking about how I even found the book, and I’ve not said much about the essays other than this: it’s worth reading.
I’m not really the philosophical type and I don’t think it helped me make The Hobbit more interesting to my daughters. But it did make the book more interesting to me, which is saying something about a book I already love and enjoy.

كتاب رائع أشبه بمقالات وربط بين ما يدور في عقل تولكين وما يدور في عقل الفلاسفة
أعطيته 3 نجمات لأني لم أقرأ بعد كتاب الهوبيت، وهناك بعض المواقف التي لم أعرفها من قبل لأنه لم يتم ذكرها في ثلاثية الهوبيت، على اعتبار أن الكتاب أغنى من الأفلام
عندما أنتهي من كتاب الهوبيت سأعيد قرائته وأنا متأكد من أنه سيأخذ اكثر من ثلاث نجمات عندها
أعطيته 3 نجمات لأني لم أقرأ بعد كتاب الهوبيت، وهناك بعض المواقف التي لم أعرفها من قبل لأنه لم يتم ذكرها في ثلاثية الهوبيت، على اعتبار أن الكتاب أغنى من الأفلام

قد لا يعجب هذا الكتاب تولكين نظرًا لأنو رأى أن الفن يطلب لذاته ولا يجب أن تكون الرواية كمن يحاول أن يعظ. وصحيح أن بعض المقالات كانت أشبه بكتب مساعدة الذات، لكن هذه المحاولة لانزال الفلسفة من البرج الأكاديمي الذي وصلت إليه ووضعها مجددًا بين يدي الجميع كما كان حلم أوئل الفلاسفة محاولة يجب أن تحمد
كما أني أود إهداء هذا الكتاب لكل شخص اعتقد أن الهوبيت عبارة عن قصة خيالية لا تمت للواقع بشكل ولا تقدم أي فائدة وحري بالناس قراءة ما هو أفيد. أهديه لهم وأقول الأمور أعمق كثيرًا مما تبدو في فلم أو قراءة سريعة

Desde que vi este libro en las redes sociales quedé absolutamente prendida. Y cuando lo vi en la Feria, no pude evitar comprarlo (a pesar de que el precio se salía de mi presupuesto). El hobbit y la filosofía es una compilación de reflexiones acerca de ciertos asuntillos como la suerte, las diferencias entre las razas, la guerra, el arte, los juegos, etc.
"Si hay alguna referencia contemporánea (en mis relatos de la Tierra Media) es aquello que me parece la presunción más difundida de nuestro tiempo: si una cosa puede ser hecha, debe ser hecha. Esto me parece completamente falso. Los ejemplos más importantes de la acción del espíritu y de la razón están en la abnegación."
La edición es preciosa, el libro está dividido en cuatro partes y las caratulas llevan mapas impresionantes de nuestra querida Tierra Media. En fin, es un libro para fans únicamente (del libro o de las películas).
Para evitar malentendidos, les aclaro que el libro no contiene material nuevo ni exclusivo acerca de la saga de Tolkien. No. Esto es una recompilación de ensayos de diversos autores que han leído El Hobbit y El Señor de los Anillos y opinan sobre temas puntuales dejando su lado filosófico.
De una manera muy entretenida y para nada pesada, los autores dejan caer conceptos básicos (y no tan básicos) de la filosofía en sus análisis. Así veremos citas de Platón, la hermenéutica, William Blake, Martha Nussbaum, Immanuel Kant, entre otros.
En total son diecisiete capítulos, cada uno dedicado a una temática diferente, pero totalmente divertidos. Ya que los conceptos de filosofía están tan bien explicados (y de una manera tan sencilla y cercana al lector) que cualquiera podría leerlo.
El Hobbit y la filosofía es un libro muy lindo, totalmente de colección, que hará reflexionar al lector de Tolkien y ayudará a comprender o unir cosas que tal vez no te habías parado a pensar. A mí me encantó. Recomendado para todos los fans de El Señor de los Anillos.

I'm really liking this book. The essays range from 'good' to 'very good' to 'made me stop and t.h.i.n.k.' Most of the authors - Bassham and Bronson, the book's editors in particular - are spot on with their philosophical explorations.

The Hobbit and Philosophy: For When You've Lost Your Dwarves, Your Wizard, and Your Way is part of the Blackwell Philosophy and Pop Culture series.
Many, many years ago I discovered the Tao of Pooh by Benjamin Hoff, which is when I realised that it was possible to explain ancient philosophy through the lens of popular literature and culture. It was fun, enlightening and thought-provoking.
Therefore, I was very open, to exploring The Hobbit in the same vain.
There was a lot to ponder as the various authors expounded on the issues of wisdom, the nature of Tao, enlightenment, suffering, mercy, glory, pride, materialism & greed, war, beauty, play, magic, pity, interpretation, luck, consolation, courage, risk-taking and the idea of homecoming.
Some of the essays were drier than others, but most of them were engaging and insightful looks at the various moral lessons embedded within The Hobbit.

ho amato alla follia questo approfondimento sul capitolo della Terra di Mezzo che apre le avventure a seguire.
naturalmente non é una lettura leggerissima, dal momento che, soprattutto in alcuni tratti, si presenta particolarmente complessa.
in piú punti ho avuto bisogno di rileggere paragrafi e spiegazioni per riuscire a capire al meglio.
ho amato particolarmente i riferimenti ad alcuni studiosi di sociologia e psicologia e naturalmente ad Aristotele.

naturalmente non é una lettura leggerissima, dal momento che, soprattutto in alcuni tratti, si presenta particolarmente complessa.
in piú punti ho avuto bisogno di rileggere paragrafi e spiegazioni per riuscire a capire al meglio.

I wish I could give this book more than 5 stars!! My first book about Philosophy. It's a very complicated science, but the concept of the book is amazing, to merge the Philosophy, and pop culture, makes you understand Philosophy through what you love. The book takes you on an adventure to explore Philosophy through the Hobbit, discussing Adventures, Ideas, Cosmopolitan, Glory, Pride, Possession, Just War, Art, Playing, Technology, Luck, Hermeneutics, Divine providence, Courage , and Innocence. Jumping through all of them was so smooth. I can't wait to read another book about Philosophy and Pop culture.

الرحلة هذه المرة ليست في الأرض الوسطى، بل في عقل تولكين ذاته. مقالات مختلفة لمجموعة من الفلاسفة واساتذة الجامعة يحاولون تحليل الهوبيت من منظور فلسفي، واعتقد انهم نجحوا الي حد كبير في اضفاء بعد جديد لرواية الهوبيت. في المعتاد لا احب الكتب التي تتحدث عما كان يعنيه كاتب ما فيكتابه لانها غالبا ما تلوي عنق النص لصالح التأويل، ولكن هنا أحسست أنه يتناولون بعض القضايا الفلسفة التي تتطرق لها الرواية بدون التركيز عن المعنى الذي يقصده تولكين. بعض المقالات جيد وبعضها رائع وبعضها متوسط ولكن الكتاب بمجمله ممتع ويستحق القراءة.

تجربتي الأولى وكانت تجربة مبهرة لهذا النوع من الكتب .حيث أن الكتاب يخوض في المنظور الفلسفي لسلسلة أفلام الهوبيت ويربطها بالنظريات والآراء الفلسفية لكبار الفلاسفة .مما يعطيك منظور أوسع وفهم أكبر لأحداث الفلم ومن جانب آخر يسهل عليك النظريات الفلسفية بسبب ربطها بأحداث الفلم. كأنه يجسدها واقع حي ماثل أمامك .الكتاب كأنه صديق يشاهد ويناقش معك أحداث الفلم . يعيب الكتاب تكرار بعض أفكاره بين فصل وآخر
حتما سأعيد تجربة قراءة هذا النوع من الكتب .

Hobbit i filozofia jest zbiorem tekstów różnych osób, które pisały o różnych zagadnieniach filozoficznych. Każdy z autorów w mniejszym lub większym stopniu odwołuje się do prac Tolkiena, głównie Hobbita oraz poglądów samego autora Śródziemia.
W tym zbiorze można poczytać o podobieństwach między poglądami Tolkiena i taoistami, o kosmopolityzmie i jego umiarkowanej wersji w Hobbicie, o starożytnym i chrześcijańskim poglądzie na chwałę, o cnocie według Arystotelesa i św. Tomasza z Akwinu, chciwości, wojnie sprawiedliwej, sztuce, pięknie, o roli zabawy, o poglądach Arystotelesa na szczęście i pech, o paradoksie fikcji. Jest też esej poświęcony problemowi boskiej wszechwiedzy i propozycji rozwiązania przez Boecjusza oraz o motywach romantycznych w Hobbicie i twórczości Wiliama Blake (tracenie niewinności przez dorastanie). Jest też rozdział z pogranicza teorii gier związany z podejmowaniem decyzji.
W kilku esejach znajdziemy też informacje na temat poglądów Tolkiena na technologię i maszyny. Tolkien był sceptycznie nastawiony do technologii, ponieważ uważał, że pozwala ona robić wiele rzeczy szybko bez zastanawiania się nad dalekosiężnymi konsekwencjami. Uważał też, że daje ona władzę człowiekowi przez którą staje się on wyalienowany od wyższych wartości oraz natury.
To co w książce mocno razi, to wielokrotne powtórzenia tych samych cytatów w różnych pracach. Prace też w oczywisty sposób różnią się stylem, ponieważ ten zbiór był współtworzony przez wielu różnych autorów. Książkę można polecić, ale raczej głównie fanom Środziemia. Całość czyta się średnio.

قد نخرج بأشياء مختلفة من جراء قراءتنا لرواية معينة، وهي تختلف كليًا عن قراءة شخص آخر. وهذا ما يميز الأدب الروائي العظيم على أية حال.
على سبيل المثال قد تخرج بالكثير من الحبكة الجميلة في رواية البؤساء لو افترضت أنه حتى الأسقف ميريل لم يرحم فالجان، بل كانت الرواية لتنتهي لتوها. أو أن ماريوس ألتفت، لو مرة، لحب إيبونين. فينتظم الخيال بأشكاله المختلفة. غير القضايا المطروحة في الرواية ذاتها عن العدالة وفلسفة القانون والحب اللامشروط والتضحية...إلخ.
غير أن نظرتك، وفهمك قد تكون مغايرة تمامًا عن مقاصد الكاتب، وتخرج بنتائج جديدة عن الكتاب بذاته. وهذا لا يعني بالضرورة سوء الرواية أو سوء فهمك.
فبرأيّ، المتواضع جدًا، متى ما كان النصّ قادرًا على خلق المزيد من النقاشات والمحاورات ليظهر لنا فصل جديد عن أفكار جدردة، متى ما كان بالإمكان أننا نستطيع قياسه والحديث عنه بالأفكار الجديدة لعصرنا، يصبح النصّ ناجحًا وخرج من سطوة عصره. إنما النصوص التي ما تلبث أن تنتهي مع نهاية عصرها هي من تموت.
لذا، ليس شرطًا أن يكون في الكتاب مبالغة مفرطة حول تحليلاته عن رواية الهوبيت، بل على العكس، يرى كل باحث الشيء الذي وجده وأثاره في الرواية. وهو ربما لا يجادل قطعًا أنه هو رأيّ تولكين بالتمام.

un'accozzaglia di articoli sui temi più disparati, alcuni anche non direttamente collegati ai temi tolkeniani in se ma solo genericamente all'idea di racconto.
assieme al fatto che il libro presenta alcuni aspetti oggettivamente tiratissimi e buttati a caso e altri aspetti messi li con scopo speculativo* l'intera opera mi è sembrata una manovra commerciale piena di riempitivi per tirare fuori un libro completamente a caso da un tema recentemente venuta alla ribalta grazie ai film, spesso con parti che personalmente mi sono sembrate abbastanza qualunquiste e generaliste.
NOn mancano alcuni spunti che possono essere interessanti ma complessivamente leggerlo mi è sembrata più una perdita di tempo.
(* ad un certo punto si legge "Le tensioni tra i Nani e gli Elfi sono leggendarie. Credo che il problema vada in parte rintracciato nelle fondamentali differenze tra i loro stili di vita.". Ogni lettore appassionato di Tolkien sa perfettamente a cosa siano dovute tali tensioni. e tutto questo a che scopo? come argomento per far passare il tema del "cosmopolitismo" in Tolkien...).

I should start by stating that I'm no fan of philosophy in general. I thought this book would offer some philosophical insights into The Hobbit and in part I wasn't disappointed. This is where the book shined for me and provided some interesting observations regarding the story. For example, how the subtitle of 'There and Back Again' is misleading in a sense, as Bilbo never returned as the same 'unchanged' Hobbit. Where it did disappoint was when it tried to 'stiff-arm' some quite dry philosophy onto aspects of the story. When it tried to claim a philosophical paradox about how we can care about characters in a story, I instantly rejected the basis that the assertions were derived from as being flawed. It left me feeling how daft philosophy can be, rather than showing me something clever.
Overall, I took some interesting ideas away with me, so that's good.

I love this series (previous reads include The Matrix and Philosophy and The Simpsons and Philosophy [are these on my list? Must check]). They're good introductions to the big ideas in philosophy. In this book, the value of play, the definition of courage, the virtue of humility vs the vice of pride, luck, technology, just war, and the paradoxes of fiction. It borders on literary criticism, so I'm hoping to get some articles in the classroom when we read The Hobbit next fall. As far as quality, I think the articles are pretty basic, which fits as these are introductory, but I'm ready to bite into some more serious stuff. Or write some...

Un libro con diversi interventi, il cui valore è molto vario. Devo dire che rispetto alla scarsa aspettativa, il libro è sorprendentemente bello e profondo. Alcuni capitoli sono addirittura da essere meditati! Da 5 stelle. Altri sono da 1/2 stelle. Le tre stelle finali sono una media. Ma il libro vale ampiamente la pena! Sia che si conosca l’opera di Tolkien, sia che si siano visti i film di Peter Jackson, sia che non si sappia neppure chi sia uno Hobbit!
Un libro che complessivamente si rivela una piacevole e ricca sorpresa.

I must admit I enjoyed this one more than "Game of Thrones and Philosophy". Like in that book, the theories described in this one aren't really groundbreaking or something that one would miss after reading Hobbit several times, but it was still presented in an enjoyable form. I liked how it took also from Lord of the Rings and even Silmarillion, taking note of some characters changed and what consequences did the actions of Hobbit have.

.....mixed feelings on this one....
3/4ths of the book involved weak attempts to tie Eastern mysticism to Tolkien's work and inspiration (despite his staunch Christian faith). However, the remainder of the book explored fascinating concepts of free will vs. foreknowledge in Middle Earth and the role of the reader's emotions in fiction!
It is a collection of essays written by multiple people, and therefore slightly disappointing as it was not what I expected. :(

This book contains an interesting collection of essays that tackle various themes in J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit from various philosophical perspectives, eastern as well as western. I enjoyed looking at the text in this way and it gave me some fresh insight.

If you have the patience to read philosophy you'll enjoy this read. Quality work (if somewhat absurd at times) from reputable scholars that I can't find fault with. I disagreed here and there with some arguments but who wouldn't. All in all a good anthology
