Ugh! I hate this book. I REALLY hate everything about this book.

No matter how many times this genre has been written, I will always enjoy reading about Detectives, Investigators, Profilers and anyone related to Police and crime scenes, but Hunted got under my skin and irked the sh*t out of me. Omg. The main character is one of the most annoying, self-absorbed and incompetent characters I’ve ever come across and I hated her the entire time.

Evelyn Baine is a criminal profiler for the FBI. She is on the hunt for the Bakersville Burier who hunts young women and buries them deep in the woods. Blah blah. This plot would easily get me to read this book but damn, a whole day wasted reading about this supposed-heroine who’s totally full of herself, uncooperative and without an ounce of camaraderie. Her lack of willingness to work with her team jeopardised the whole operation and the lives of her colleagues and I hated her more because of that.

The sad part is; This could’ve have been one of the best thrillers out there. The writing is impeccable, the plot is really promising but was blemished by Evelyn and the lack of depth of the supporting characters.

I would suggest watching an Episode of Criminal Minds rather than waste your time with this one. Just awful.

Evelyn Baine is a criminal profiler with the FBI. The job is her life. She was raised by her now elderly grandmother, as her mother was an abusive alcoholic. What has steered her throughout her life was the abduction of her best friend when she was 12 years old.

Evelyn is hunting evil personified. He abducts women, tortures them, and then buries them vertically with only their heads showing above ground.

After being called in to put together a profile, she is , herself, targeted .... but Evelyn is not a Federal Agent for nothing. She maneuvers and escapes, but as he has injected her with some kind of drug, all she can remember is his blue eyes.

The suspense part of this book begins with several men, mostly other agents or law enforcement personnel, who all have blue eyes and are attracted to Evelyn. Of course, there are such things as contacts, so it's really difficult in discovering who-dun-it.

At first I thought this was a Romantic Suspense but there is very little romance until the very end (no sex) and lots and lots of suspense and action.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. I love the character of Evelyn. She has trust issues and takes herself far too seriously, but her inner self wants what most of us want .. to be normal and live a normal life. Being almost the only woman working among a bunch of men, most of them older, maybe wiser, she is determined to prove that she can hold her own.

This is first of a series. The next one is Vanished .. and the 3rd one, not slated to be out until later this year, is Seized. I already have Vanished ordered ... that should take care of my recommendation.

Fans of Tana French and Gillian Flynn will love Elizabeth Heiter's HUNTED! This taut suspense thriller kept me on the edge of my seat and flipping pages as fast as my eyes could race over the lines. The clever plot was full of twists and turns and had a great deal of authentic detail about the work of FBI profilers. I felt immersed in the world of local and federal detectives and their work to unravel the identity of a masterful serial killer. Evelyn Baines, the novel's heroine, is a fascinating, nuanced character with a haunting past that's driven her to bring the most despicable criminals to justice. I love that she's a biracial character as we don't see enough women of color in novels! She's brave, tough, professional, brilliant, and gifted at her job. She's a match for the insane genius's she hunts, such as the killer in this novel whose gruesome murders paralyze the local community with fear. Heiter also gives us the killer's point of view from time to time and it's gripping reading to get inside the head of a murderer. The book is never predictable and kept me guessing throughout. If you love well-written, action-backed, intelligent suspense novels, you've found a great one here! Heiter is a rising star and I can't wait to read her next novel in The Profiler series!

A very good read by a new author. This is Elizabeth Heiter's first book and well worth the read. Her main character is a troubled soul - a profiler with the BAU of the FBI. A bit of a creep factor starts things out, a bit of background, and then immersion into the story. A serial killer has emerged in a small town where everyone knows everyone's business and everyone knows everyone - or do they? The main character, "Evelyn Baine" is in her first year of profiling and has been very successful, but is not really being respected for her skills - yet. A lot of her background is given throughout the novel - at times I found that tedious, but I understand what they author was doing - laying out the ground work for what is to come. Evelyn is in the serial killer's sights and she knows it!

A little bit of romance starting to develop in this first book and from the sounds of it will continue to grow into the next book - which isn't being released until 2015!!!!

Do I recommend this book, certainly it is well worth the read.

Two thumbs up and 4 stars!

I don't know if this was really that bad or I'm just that picky. Either way, I really didn't like this. If I ever need FBI skills or investigation, I'd demand Barney Fife or the squad from Reno 911 before I'd let Evelyn, the main criminal profiler in this one, investigate for me. I've rarely liked a main character less.
This book is definitely in my wheel house. Strong female protagonist, in this case an FBI profiler, goes after dangerous serial killer and gets her man in the end. I'm all in, usually. Yet, this was just not that good. Evelyn routinely makes terrible mistakes in the case, putting the investigation and lives including her own at risk, but then gets incredibly whiney when her boss (with decades of experience) or her training officer (7 years experience to her 1 year experience) call her on it. Then, she's the only one who finds some obvious clues while at the same time missing huge clues she's been tripping over for several chapters. She's awful and rude to her friends, co-workers, witnesses - pretty much everyone, but the guy still wants her and her friends still want to hang out with her. The writing is full of clichés. I wanted to DNF about 30% in, but kept going as this has been on my TBR pile forever. I felt an obligation. Obligation complete. No more.

Haunted, hunted, completed.

The Bakersville Burier definitely gave Evelyn Baine, an FBI profiler, a run for the money. The BAKBURY case as it was called and as he was called was a master at abducting his victims as well as avoiding the police. The Bakersville Burier had a grudge against women and a background that made him dangerous along with a background that fed his horrible desire to hurt.

HUNTED will keep you turning the pages as the "hunted" and the "hunter" keep eluding each other. HUNTED is an excellent thriller and a great debut novel for Ms. Heiter.

HUNTED kept me awake reading to find out what happened and also kept me awake with every light on because of the fright factor.

You will love Evelyn but want to tell her to lighten up and take care of her personal life as well as her professional life. Evelyn had a piece of herself in every murderer she profiled because of something that happened in her own life when she was younger.

I haven't read a thriller for a while and enjoyed the chase and the tension of HUNTED. You will be tempted to leave the lights on as you read and look behind you and around you when you are out. There is also a sweet romance hidden in all of this terror.

HUNTED is a book you will want to read if you like to delve into a criminal's past and try to figure out what caused him to want to murder and harm others.

Don't miss reading HUNTED. 4/5

This book was given to me free of charge and without compensation by the publisher in return for an honest review.

Weak on character motivations, but it kept my interest.

This is a solid police procedural about FBI profiler Evelyn searching for a serial killer. We slowly discover clues during the book - which I like. It’s not a tell all at the end.

A lot of the tension in the story is from cops and other FBI agents who don’t want Evelyn working on the case. She frequently goes off alone to investigate which angers them. She puts herself in danger going off alone. She does not have a partner because she’s a profiler.

I would have liked more done with character motivations for several characters. For example: I’m not sure what is going on with Evelyn’s boss Dan. He appears not to like her. She thinks he doesn’t trust her. But something changed about him later.

Since this is a Harlequin, I should mention there is no development of a romantic relationship, although there is a coworker would like that. There is a happy ending for the good guys.

Elizabeth Heiter introduces her suspenseful debut HUNTED, #1 Profiler, a new series and FBI criminal profiler, Evelyn Baine—one tough cookie!

Evelyn Baine is with the BAU (Behavior Analysis Unit) with the FBI and gets called in for an assignment in a small Virginia town. She is not a rookie anymore and she has earned her spot; however, she is the youngest in the group.

She is sent to a small town in Bakersville, Virginia where women are being tortured and raped and buried up to their neck with heads exposed. Being a profiler, she has to deal with the local authorities and their resistance--which is always trying, especially in small towns, when they do not like outsiders.

Evelyn becomes almost obsessed with solving the murders; however, this time, instead of being the hunter, she becomes the hunted.

A gripping debut—I actually read Vanished first #2 Profiler; was so intrigued, purchased the audio to find out more about Evelyn—smart, dedicated and driven. Janina Edwards delivered a suspenseful tension filled performance.

Heiter does an outstanding job with the crime scene, office politics, cop procedures, and delivers fast paced action. The Bakersville Burier was evil personified! What sets the thriller apart is the main protagonist—Evelyn –you will root for her.

Highly recommend Hunted, Vanished and Seized! An author to follow.

I waivered about reading this book several times but then when I say and read a glowing review by one of my fellow reader friends, I thought ok, I have to read this book. So reading the review and the fact that this book is in my favorite genre, I did not give a second thought to picking it up to read. The book started out good. The cops find the bodies of several women who had been buried in the ground. It set up the story. It was even explained as a little as to why the killer buried the women. The next scene was intense with Evelyn getting kidnapped and fighting her way to freedom. Then the action stopped and the story began. It seemed to move slow without much more happening from the killer or the police. In fact, it seemed like the only one giving any input was Evelyn. Everyone else was unforgettable. I got to chapter six and nothing new was happening in the story. It even was a struggle to get to chapter six. I was reading like 1 chapter at a time or trying to finish at least 1 chapter at a time. I finally could go no longer and have to put this book down.

This is a debut for Elizabeth Heiter. She brings us a FBI thriller that doesn't disappoint on any level. After the first few sentences, I was hooked. She brings us well developed characters that are not always perfect; their flaws make them human and accessible to the reader.
Evelyn Baine is a criminal profiler with the BAU (Behavior Analysis Unit) with the FBI in Virginia. She did not experience the idea childhood growing up and as a result tends to keep her feelings locked inside. Evelyn experienced a trauma in her childhood that haunts her to this day and is what lead her to become a profiler.
She moved to this position about a year ago and has made quiet an impression on the other agents. She is excellent at her job and has the ability to get into the suspects head which makes her sort of scary. She has been assigned a new case in Bakersville, which is a nearby town. Two female bodies were found in the woods by the property owner. Evelyn heads out to the crime scene so she can start a profile for the police. Of course, she meet resistance with the local law enforcement officers, this is nothing new though.
The autopsies reveal that both women have been tortured and raped. That is bad enough, but when the bodies are found, they are buried up to their neck with only their heads exposed. She develops a profile and preventative measures for the local police to use. The chief of police is skeptical of her abilities as a profiler and in particularly her role in this case. With the body count rising and finding herself back in the position of having to prove her profile is correct, Evelyn becomes deeply invested in solving these murders to the point of obsession. Her determination not only puts her career in jeopardy, but also her life. Suddenly instead of being the hunter, she becomes the hunted.
If you like reading mysteries by authors like Catherine Coulter, you will love this book. I am looking forward to the next book "Vanished" which will be release Jan. 2015.

My View:
Unbelievably good – this is my kind of read!

What a fantastic FBI procedural from debut author Elizabeth Heiter. I loved this book- the pace, the characters, the plot, the twists, the action, the tension...I loved it all.

Evelyn Baine is a great female protagonist – smart, dedicated, resourceful, a wonderful FBI profiler with a personal history that steers her life - personal and professional. Heiter sets a great crime scene and the office banter and politics adds a further dimension to the narrative. I can see a TV show waiting to explode onto our screens.

Heiter gets all the essential elements of a great crime read spot on. I cannot wait for her next book...due out in the New Year, “Vanished” which follows an important story line in Hunted.

Hunted

Evelyn Baine is criminal profiler with the FBI. Evelyn has wanted to work with the FBI for many years- and her star is rising and she’s making quite a reputation for herself. When called in to profile the Bakersville Burier, Evelyn knows she must work hard to create a profile before too many innocent people are killed. What Evelyn does not count on is how the Bakersville Burier will change her life- and how deeply it will affect her.

When Evelyn is abducted one night leaving a police bar, she doesn’t know if this is the Bakersville Burier or some other lunatic. What she does know is that if she does not get away- she will never live to find out what happened to her best friend, Cassie, when they were kids. Evelyn manages to get away- but then the chase is on- does Evelyn have 2 men after her or just 1?

Picking through clues, Evelyn finds a clue that takes her to Boston about a missing FBI agent. Slowly, the pieces of the puzzle begin to fall into place- and Evelyn knows the who, why, and how- but she does not know when he’ll strike again. The only card Evelyn has, the only card- is that she got away. And she knows that is killing this serial killer. Will the Bakersville Burier get caught? Or will he have the last laugh?

With mystery, thrills and intrigue- Hunted is a read that mystery/thriller fans will enjoy.

Traveling With T’s Thoughts:

Elizabeth Heiter debut novel, Hunted, is a story of a FBI profiler who has suffered from a loss in her past. Evelyn Baine is good at her job- in fact exceptional. While Evelyn is fairly well fleshed out (we know she suffered a loss when she was a kid, she did not come from the steadiest of family situations and her adult relationships are lacking), we don’t know everything about Evelyn. Being that this book is part of a series- I expect that in the next book, more will be revealed about Evelyn. I wanted a bit more of a connection with Evelyn in this book, though.

It took me a bit over a week to read this book- and it wasn’t because of length. On the surface, it had everything I wanted in a book- mystery, suspense, perhaps a bit of romance, a strong female lead. It just did not completely comes together for me- I liked, but I didn’t LOVE.

I still think it’s worth a read- a debut novel should not be the only book you read by an author as they grow and change. There is quite a bit of good in Hunted- and I’m eager to see if Elizabeth Heiter’s next book, Vanished, will give me more of a connection to Evelyn or not.

Fans of mystery, FBI procedural books, and thrillers will definitely find something in Hunted to enjoy!

*Thanks to Harlequin Books for sending Hunted to Traveling With T for review. The above thoughts and opinion are mine alone.

I really did not enjoy this book. I read it to the end to give it a good chance, but I will not be reading any more of this series or this author.

This is the author's debut book, and it was definitely obvious. Much of the writing came across as juvenile (not badly written, just obviously written by an inexperienced author). Characters in the book had voices that "quivered with hope" 🙄, and that's an adult male supposed FBI agent.

The protagonist, Evelyn, had a chip on her shoulder a mile wide, and was constantly doing things like reeling off information about a person just to show how "amazing" she is at profiling. All it did was come across like a badly written cliche about how the author thinks profilers act. Evelyn lectures her female friends about psychopaths because they couldn't possibly tell if a person is off or not on their own. She also appears to be the only person who has an issue with the fact that she is female and short, and is constantly trying to prove that she can do anything the men can, instead of just DOING IT. Sigh. I was constantly sighing and rolling my eyes while reading this.

All the men in the book are either misogynistic assholes who are so suspicious of Evelyn (I mean I would be too, she's constantly acting weird and shuddering all over the place and attacking people when she falls asleep), or gorgeous hunks of love whose only role in the book is to worry about Evelyn and try to protect her. Barf. None of the characters are developed, there is no character development, and the book is predictable as shit. Sigh sigh sigh. Why did I waste my time on this?

I haven't finished the book yet, I have about three chapters to go, but I don't imagine that my opinion will change much. See you when I'm finally done...

Blah still not good. 2 stars.

A stunning debut from an excellent writer. HUNTED is technically the first in a three-book series but could easily stand on its own.

Author Elizabeth Heiter has clearly done her homework in this this crime-psychological thriller. What began as a somewhat bumpy read (at least for me), I quickly found myself engrossed in the backstory (although some reviewers will cringe on that), as well as the forward projection of the story.

Evelyn Baine is an up and coming criminal profiler with a past and spunky predisposition. She won't take no for an answer. Considering most profilers are men, this is quiet an attribute. When women go missing and are later found in a horrific burial scene, Evelyn Baine's pursuit for the killer is utterly relentless...until...well, you'll just have to read more.

At times, I felt I was reading something from a more seasoned author of the genre (Laura Lippman or Lisa Unger, perhaps) and look forward to more books by Ms. Heiter.

*My Thoughts*

Hunted is the first installment in The Profiler series by author Elizabeth Heiter. The Profiler series follows FBI Special Agent Evelyn Baine of the Behavioral Analysis Unit (BAU). Evelyn has an impressive record of closing cases that are assigned to her. She is currently the youngest agent in the BAU, which causes some resentments, and friction between her and other agents, but especially her boss Dan Moore. As I learned by reading the third book in the series, Hunted, Evelyn has spent the past 17 years totally focused on being the best she can possibly be.

I found this book shocking in that it is a debut novel. It was very well written and definitely entertaining.

An FBI profiler who is stalked by the serial killer she is trying to apprehend. He abducts her before he even knows she is with the FBI and she gets away. His fascination with her keeps him coming back for more. Definitely not one to be read at night. Definitely one to read. I can't wait to read more by Elizabeth Heiter!!

Once upon a time I was an avid lover of profiling. One of my fav shows is Criminal Minds. However, I grew up, I went to university and learned about human behaviour and now I’m anti-profiling. Really, it’s the equivalent of fortune telling!

That’s not the say that I didn’t enjoy this read because I did. The story was very well paced, the characters (while not spectacular) were interesting, and I did enjoy some aspects of the killer. However, the profiling the main character did was so ridiculously weak, it made me a touch angry. There’s no denying that the author did an awesome researching researching, blah. And I do have to say that the main character was hard to like. Her incident (I won’t say what so I don’t spoil it) was weak and not very believable. I’m usually the first to say, hey it’s fiction the author has the right to put in whatever she wants, but with so much ‘fact’ it just felt un-natural and would have been better to leave out I feel.

If you enjoy Criminal Minds and like shows, then you may just enjoy this one.

I *almost* didn’t want to finish this book. And as I have problems with NOT finishing books I’ve started, that’s saying a lot.

I’ll admit, writing a book from a FBI profiler perspective is pretty interesting. But for me, it wasn’t done well at all. Every other sentence was based on Evelyn being frustrated that she was under estimated, under appreciated, and that every man in her field automatically deemed she wasn’t fit to be in the job she has fought so hard to be in.....all save the one cliche agent with the bulging muscles and the flirty attitude she can’t help but fall for.

Also the words um, and swear words, a description does not make. And there are other ways to describe facial expressions other than “a smile tugged at the corner of his lips” and “the lines deepened with worry across his forehead”.

I’m not usually this harsh with book reviews, but this book didn’t hit me well at all.

Evelyn Baine decided that she was going to be a criminal profiler at age 12 after her best friend was abducted and never seen again. She has dedicated her life to studying the behaviour of criminals and is one of the rising stars in the FBI. However she’s never caught a case quite like this one before.

Nicknamed the Bakersville Burier, the killer hunts young women and the two victims they’ve found so far were buried deep in the woods with only their heads sticking out of the ground. Evelyn has to prepare a profile for the reluctant local police force and get them to implement some proactive measures before the body count climbs even higher. There’s no doubt that this killer will keep going until he is caught – and he’s smart, so catching him isn’t going to be easy. Especially when she faces skepticism and questioning of her own abilities, even from within her organisation.

The killer knows that Evelyn is hunting him. And not only that, she’s taunting him as well, questioning his intelligence. She’s just guaranteed that she’s going to be his next victim and he’s going to have very special plans for her.

Hunted is the first in a new series focusing on FBI criminal profiler Evelyn Baine and her determination to find the person who kidnapped and presumably murdered her childhood best friend Cassie who disappeared some seventeen years ago when both the girls were 12. Evelyn has studied a lot over the years and she knows that the perpetrator must’ve stalked the girls for days, learning their habits. It could’ve been her just as easily.

Although incredibly talented, one of the brightest stars in the FBI, Evelyn often faces condescension from her superiors and the cops on the murder case also have their moments in questioning her skills and even her relevance to their case. It doesn’t help that Evelyn isn’t exactly socially gifted either and often has trouble relating to other people and helping them get to know her. She comes off as stand-offish and awkward, remote and cold. Despite this however, she has one ally, her former mentor Greg who helped train her as well as the friendship of Greg’s cousin Gabe and Gabe’s friend Kyle, both of whom work for the FBI but in the bureau’s Hostage Rescue Team. Kyle has made his interest in Evelyn quite clear but so far she’s been unable or unwilling to take him seriously. A lot of people in her life have left her: her father died young, her mother was an alcoholic who bought home all unsuitable manner of boyfriends, some down right dangerous. Evelyn went to live with her grandparents, her grandfather died when she was a teenager and her grandmother is in a nursing home. Evelyn has also been dumped for someone else by a previous boyfriend and all of these things combined make it incredibly difficult for her to even contemplate trusting anyone. She lets very few people into her life and even those who are within her inner circle are often kept at arms length.

There’s no denying that Evelyn is very good at her job but I have to say if I have one criticism of this book, it’s where they place the protagonist in danger by using them as bait. It drives me nuts and it happens a lot of the time in these sorts of books where the protagonist not only steps outside of the boundaries of their job but also ends up being the way in which they catch the perpetrator. In this story, they deliberately taunt the killer by press conference, using details of something and parade Evelyn around to draw him out. Friends of Evelyn want to protect her, to give extra back-up but the FBI agent in charge of the case refuses, in the same manner that he got narky with Evelyn when she uncovered leads on her own. I know Evelyn’s friends were from a different division of the bureau and this wasn’t their job as such but it was reiterated over and over how smart and strong the killer was. He’d killed before without being caught, the two bodies had only been discovered by chance and he was able to blend in to his surroundings and change his appearance very skilfully. It was clear that they were going up against someone who would be a match and then not only did they refuse extra help but two of the four agents at Evelyn’s house left the scene in order to get coffee, leaving only half the manpower behind. And of course, that was when the killer took the bait.

Despite that little blip, I enjoyed this story and the way in which it was written. I always find books that showcase the careers of FBI or CIA or NSA agents really interesting perhaps because we don’t have such a presence here in Australia with organisations such as these. There’s lots that has been left unsaid here for future installments, such as what happened to Cassie and Evelyn’s attempts to finally find her as well as her friendship with Kyle which is moving at snail’s pace towards something else. I hope to see lots of progression with Evelyn’s character throughout this series – at the moment she’s a bit of a stereotype, the remote workaholic with the private pain that fuels it all. I think she has lots of room to grow.

For a debut author like Elizabeth Heiter to totally immerse me in the world of FBI Criminal profilers and the chase of a killer, was astounding. I literally lost track of time as the twists and turns in the book left me reeling even as I flipped the pages quickly to see what would happen next for Evelyn. This is an author who knows how to tease and torment her readers to the point of obsessing over what the killer would do next. I know I was one of those readers going ‘come on, you are so close’ to the pages. I have to point out that it is the characters that also contribute to the strong storyline as well. Evelyn is a flawed heroine which really drew me to her. She had secrets in her past she was determined to keep there and her drive in the FBI’s BAU division is almost to the obsessive point but you can’t help but feel for her as well. Especially when some secrets from her past come to light in the story that tells the reader just what makes Evelyn tick. The writing is very good and the story flows smoothly with enough twists to keep the reader glued to the pages till the very end.

Meet Evelyn Baine. One of the FBI’s rising stars in the BAU and a top notch criminal profiler. Her past has pushed her to where she is today and when she is chosen to give a profile on a killer called the ‘Bakersville Burier’, Evelyn will find the killer’s mind is a web of trails and she will need all her skills as a FBI Agent to beat this madman in his game. I really enjoyed meeting and getting to know Evelyn. She is a flawed yet vulnerable woman who pushes herself to do the best she can in her job, almost to the point where it becomes an obsession with her as she barely has a social life to speak of. I really think Evelyn is a woman you can’t help but fall a bit in love with as you read HUNTED. Her life has been chaotic and at times, very painful yet you get a sense that this is a person who knows what she wants to do in life and is determined to succeed no matter the cost. The author created some amazing secondary characters that I am hoping get more page time in the future books of this series. All the characters are well written and keep the story flowing smoothly.

HUNTED is a story that gripes you until the very end and doesn’t let up on the roller coaster ride at all. I loved every minute of HUNTED and can not wait for the next book to come out. I just wish it wasn’t a year away. If you enjoy a dose of suspense with a dash of character development and more in your books, then you might want to try this new author out. I was pleasantly surprised by this debut novel and have added this author as an auto-buy for me.

Hunted was narrated in a very straight forward manner. There is a serial killer preying on women. His gruesome display of his prey meant he is highly organized and intelligent. The local police are stretched to its limits in trying to catch him, and FBI assistance is badly needed.

Our protagonist is Special Agent Evelyn Baine, a profiler assigned in the Behavioral Analysis Unit in Virginia. She have always dream of getting this job. When she was a young girl, her best friend Cassie was abducted and was never found ever again. This experience and her repressed emotions after having an unsuccessful relationship drove her to be the best she wanted to be, unfeeling and determined.

This book suffers from the usual debut dilemma; authors sometimes gear their debut enthusiasm in the not so engaging direction. (1) I've always believed that for a mystery/ thriller series to succeed the protagonist must have good relationship with the reader. The reader should have a good latch on the hero, going through with him/her in every challenge, rooting for him/her to thrive. However, Evelyn Baine was fleshed out oddly in this story. Voicing out the notion that she is the best in her field was so redundant I felt no empathy for her. (2) The writing style was fussy in a way that it diminishes the thrill, making the narrative more dramatic than it needs to be. (3) Infodumping. The author doesn’t give the reader a chance to work on some of the information needed. Instead of interweaving particular information, she gets to explain them.

Even with my ruminations above, the story do have some really good points. (1) If you get through all the fuss, there is a very interesting plot. Ms. Heiter was successful in keeping my interest and looking forward as to how the much-awaited ending will be executed. (2) The enigma surrounding the antagonist was strong. I wish there were more from his POV. (3) Given how I criticize the character of the protagonist, I like how Ms. Heiter built her secondary characters. Their diversity was interesting. I hope to see more of them in the next installment.

Yes, in spite of my lukewarm reception of the Hunted, I’ll be looking forward to the next book. So, Godspeed Ms. Elizabeth Heiter.

A fellow book club member recommended this book to me earlier this year. I purchased it on my Kindle along with Vanished, the second book in this trilogy. I'm not going to lie, I judged this book by it's Harlequin publisher and my dear Aunt Charlene's romance novels came to mind. I'm NOT into chick lit and that deterred me from reading.

Fast forward to last October and the same book club member gave me a link to personally contact Elizabeth Heiter. Come to find out, this Michigan author lives practically in my own "backyard" and frequently visits events. I reached out to Liz and she graciously replied she could indeed make my little book meeting.

I rushed out to a local book store and purchased a hard copy of Hunted, because my Kindle doesn't take autographs and quickly picked up this book and quickly discovered it's quite the page turner. WOW...I once again learned one should not judge a book by it's cover OR publisher. This amazingly constructed, well researched, awesome crime thriller did not disappoint!

Evelyn Baine is the petite little leading lady with spunk and the believable storyline was quite the ride. I cranked this book out the day before my book club and it was really cool having the author grace our group with our own personal Q & A about the book, details, and Liz provided research tidbits and told us how she actually visited the FBI shooting range and practiced using several types of guns so she could be knowledgeable and truthful with her writing.

Elizabeth Heiter is a humble, class act who impressed me with her drive and determination to publish her dream and did it in the Detroit burbs in Michigan. She is my second author I have met and I must honestly say she is a tough act to follow and patiently await her new book in this trilogy. I am lucky. I live close to the bookstore that will be having a book signing.

Evelyn Baine is an FBI expert profiler in the agency's Bahavior Analysis Unit, or BAU. She is a tenacious, driven investigator, who is gnawing her way up the career ladder, motivated by a need to prove herself as a woman in an unit where men predominate, and for her own personal reasons. Her best friend was abducted when the two girls were eleven years old, and she was never seen again.
She never knew what happened to her friend Cassie, but the serial killer she is chasing now has made the fate of his victims all too well-known, although that may not have been his intention. His gruesome method of displaying his victims' bodies gives Evelyn plenty of information to profile the killer, until it is clear he is stalking her as well.
Hunted is Elizabeth Heiter's debut novel, the first of a series. She provides a fascinating insight into the minds of killers, and the psychological profiling used by the FBI to identify criminals, as well as to eliminate the innocent. As well as being a tensely written crime story, Heiter shows that as technology and investigative techniques advance, it is becoming more and more difficult to commit the perfect crime, but the skills of trained, dedicated detectives are still needed to bring criminals to justice. At the same time, Heiter's character Evelyn Baines struggles with the discrimination women face in a male-dominated field. After the killer, an expert at disguises and at acting a part, has slipped through their fingers yet again, Evelyn talks an extraordinary risk to finally put a stop to the killing spree.
Author Heiter has created well-developed characters and a gripping story. I look forward to reading what happens next in The Profiler Series.

Hunted by Elizabeth Heiter
Profiler series Book #1
4 stars

From The Book:
Terror stalks a small Virginia town. FBI rising star, criminal profiler Evelyn Baine, knows how to think like a serial killer. But she's never chased anyone like the Bakersville Burier, who hunts young women and displays them, half-buried, deep in the woods. As the body count climbs, Evelyn's relentless pursuit of the killer puts her career—and her life—at risk. And the evil lurking in the Burier's mind may be more than even she can unravel.

Terror is closer than she thinks. The Bakersville Burier knows he's got an FBI profiler on his trail. He knows who she is and where to find her. And he's biding his time, because he's planned a special punishment for Evelyn. She may have tracked other killers, but he vows to make this her last chase. This time it's her turn to be hunted.

My Views:
You can tell that the author either had law enforcement experience or else did a great deal of excellent research. She has produced a clear and crisply written tale of a hunt for a serial killer that abducts, kills and buries the bodies with the heads above ground so that he can visit them.

The character of Evelyn Baine, the FBI profiler...the new gal in what has always been primarily a man's world...intelligent and professional...and being very careful to keep her guard up and not give in to her attraction to fellow agent, Kyle McKenzie, is a breath of fresh air in the world of Mystery & Suspense. I usually don't care for romance being mixed into this genre but in this case it's not overpowering the main plot and actually adds to it. This is the first book and I already have the second.
