"If I tell you to run, you go as fast as you can into the house and you lock the door. You don't open it for nobody, not even me...not you Poppa?...I've got my key, but something else that looks like me won't...." When I read this passage I knew this was going to be an adventure like no other. Arjay has a way to intertwine you within his monster filled world. He takes mythical creatures and brings them into a light we do not see them in too often and has them tangle with a great cast of characters. You feel like you are a fly within their world watching it unravel as they journey on. This was a great story to dig into and I can't not wait to read more!

Joshua Bennett is an African-American journalist who is drawn to the mystery surrounding his father’s death. His father raised him with stories about how he and his partner Digger would hunt preternatural creatures. When Joshua was seven, he witnessed his father in action with one of them. Now, his father has passed away with a mysterious wound on his neck. When a stranger shows up at the funeral to help bury him, Joshua’s interest is piqued. He believes it is Digger.

The man disappears before he can talk to him. Stepping into his role as a journalist, while he goes in search of answers, Joshua takes on more than he bargained for. When Digger shows up again, just in the nick of time to save him, Joshua decides to join him in his harrowing adventures while he searches for clues about what happened to his father. He vows to destroy whoever was responsible for his death. In doing so, Joshua enters a world full of nightmarish creatures who need to be annihilated before they accomplish their mission of destroying humanity.

Arjay Lewis has created an amazing horror novel that skillfully takes his readers into a world of psychological terror. He masterfully blends visceral horror, suspense, mythology, and even some romance into this story. He pays impeccable attention to detail, which in this case was often gruesome. This adds authenticity. His ability to vividly describe the scenes, especially as viewed through the eyes of the characters, really helped bring this tale to life.

I enjoyed watching the protagonist, Joshua, evolve into a man with amazing abilities, while he was discovering how to use his latent talents. While trying to find answers to what he was seeking, he also discovered long-buried secrets. The other characters added a great deal of depth to this story. They all had special talents, and by joining forces with him, they were able to make an incredible team. Despite the eerie atmosphere and underlying sense of doom, the relationships created help to give the reader hope that they will come through this together.

Once I started reading “Digger,” I could not put it down. Lewis immediately drew me into this horror. The novel is fast-paced, suspenseful, and full of well-timed shocks that kept me on the edge of my seat. I loved that he incorporated mythological beings that went beyond the usual vampires, werewolves, and ghosts. These creatures have a place in folklore around the world, and I am sure they have been visited in many nightmares. This is not your typical horror novel at all!

“Digger,” is an exceptionally written horror novel that will infiltrate readers’ nightmares, and yet still make them crave more writings by Arjay Lewis. His mastery of horror and suspense, along with his complex characters, including the mythological ones, make this a must-read for fans of horror. “Digger” will stay with you long after you read the last page.

Godlike.

This book showcases the power of a standalone novel and why it is important not to underestimate them. The narrative is crisp, sucking you in straight from the first chapter. It was captivating how the author omitted the typical prologue in fiction, and started straight from chapter one. The author richly portrays the characters. I felt like I was walking through a horror mausoleum as the writer shares his knowledge of frightening creatures, and his preference in creepy flicks. It was fascinating how Arjay Lewis gave the protagonist a handicap, but still made it work in the prose. This eerie chronicle will transport you into a world full of devilish, supernatural beings and will unravel the enigma behind the title. What I found alluring was the author's deft blending of mystery with mayhem. The wordsmith's well-formatted fabrication aided my reading experience. The yarn flowed well and continued to do so as the plot unwinded. I imagine the creator of this work made a detailed outline for this text, and I can envision him smiling as he developed this book. Arjay Lewis is a gifted writer, and he knows how to keep readers engaged. I thought it was cool how he separated the book into different parts, and I'm not referring to chapters. I like that Arjay Lewis offers readers freebies in this book.

I wish there were more illustrations planted in this outstandingly composed novel to immerse readers more into this provocative anecdote. I wish the story was a little shorter, as I felt myself become a little restless while digging into this novel. The editing wasn't perfect, but it was good enough to not impede my reading experience. Arjay Lewis should revamp the book cover because it could be better. Still, I would disagree with any other reviewer who rates this book less than four stars.

If you're reading this review and wondering if you should read this horror chronicle, yes, you should. The first sentence of this novel hits hard, and chapter one does not disappoint. While this tale concludes well, I like how the author made it so that he can choose to turn it into a series if he wanted to. The Wizard of Odd has showed why every author should include a few standalone yarns in their arsenal. If you haven't figured it out already, what I'm saying is I'm a fan of this tale, and I would be interested in reading other works by this talented novelist.

In Digger by Arjay Lewis, readers meet Joshua Bennet, a young reporter grappling with his father’s mysterious and sudden death. Raised on his father's stories of nocturnal horrors and having witnessed inexplicable events himself, Joshua doubts the official explanation of his father's demise. Determined to uncover the truth, he sets out to find his father’s old ally, known only as Digger. Armed with nothing but an alias, Joshua's journalistic skills are put to the test in a quest that proves more daunting than expected.

Throughout the novel, Joshua relies on childhood notes about his father's escapades as a demon hunter, using his journalism career not only as a means to investigate but also as a disguise to deflect suspicion in the small, tight-knit communities he explores. These settings are vividly portrayed, with residents' wariness adding a layer of authenticity to each encounter. Joshua’s pretense of researching articles lends him just enough credibility to continue his inquiries, gradually peeling back layers of mystery with each reluctant source he persuades.

Fans of supernatural dramas like "Supernatural" or "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" will find Digger a novel take on the demon hunter narrative. Lewis refreshes a familiar genre by shifting the perspective to an outsider, adding a layer of intrigue and novelty. Without revealing too much, the narrative excels in drawing readers into Joshua’s relentless pursuit of the enigmatic Digger. The pacing of the book is deliberate, with early chapters setting a measured tempo that crescendos into a gripping, sleep-defying conclusion.

For those drawn to supernatural thrillers and horror, Digger promises a compelling blend of suspense and the unexplained.

I didn't know what to expect from this book and author and was a bit surprised. This book had a little of everything in it from vampires, ghouls, zombies, voodoo, a little romance, family secrets and so much more. The characters were well-rounded and likable. I think my favorites were "Digger" and Josh's characters. Imagine watching your dad kill a monster when you were seven and listening to all his stories about other monsters he helped kill. When Josh's dad dies from an apparent monster attack, Josh is determined to find and kill that monster. He sets out to find Digger (his dad's monster fighting partner) to help him identify what killed his father. This decision leads Josh into a world just like the stories his dad told. Will he survive while helping Digger rid the world of more monsters? Will he find the monster responsible for the death of his father? This is a well rounded and very entertaining story. It ties in the past and present nicely. A true tale of evil versus good.

I received an ARC copy of this book and this is my honest review.

I contemplated giving this book 3 stars because the overall writing and the premise was great. What annoyed the Hell out of me was the main character, Josh. All he did was bitch, moan and ask stupid, rude questions anytime he spoke. By the middle of the book I was no longer rooting for him but kinda hoping he would die. As soon as he met the person he was looking for he became a total douche. The dialogue for the women struck me as odd, either too formal or almost child like. There were pockets of exciting scenes or interesting backstory but besides that it was just boring. This book didn't pull me in, I had to make myself finish it because I hate to quit a book after making it to the halfway point. Oh yeah, and the ritualistic mani/pedi was totally cringey. Obviously I understand the supposed reasoning but it was just weird.

Digger, my third from author Arjay Lewis. In my first read from him, The Vanishing, I commented that his writings are reminiscent of the writing of Ted Dekker, Stephen King & now I add C. Dennis Moore. The best book I've read this year and hands down hid best I've read yet. A captivating, page-turning, well-written thriller with more than a touch of supernatural suspense leaving you panting for more. “I received a free review copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review." The gifting of this book did not affect my opinion of it. I eagerly look forward to reading more from this author. (RIP Marley January 20, 2014 - July 24, 2018).

This was my summer holiday reading this year, and it was a good choice. This novel isn't part of one of Arjay Lewis's supernatural horror series, this is is a standalone story featuring a new protagonist. As ever, Mr Lewis draws us adroitly into the world he creates; I get the impression that a lot of research goes into the lore and mythology of the world his characters inhabit, and this helps make it seem real and immediate. A cracking read, as ever, with some rip-roaring scenes of undead combat.

Great Supernatural Horror Novel

Digger is truly a great read. It’s a page-turning, unputdownable book. Arjay Lewis is a wonderful storyteller in this supernatural horror novel featuring vampires, zombies, and ghouls. The pace of the novel is perfect. The twists and turns had me wondering what would happen next, only to have the answers revealed at the exact right time.

Put this book at the top of your list as a must read.

Poppa's death left unanswered questions for Josh. They could only be answered by the mysterious and elusive Digger... Finding and connecting with Digger sets off shocking revelations.
Digger is an intoxicating and thrilling read, from start to finish! My pet peeve was Josh's steady questioning about being paid for services rendered. However, there's no doubt this is a must read!!!! Looking forward to more adventures with Josh, Widelene, Digger and hopefully Marie! Enjoy!

This was a great read for an afternoon. While the definite monsters and paranormal are part of the book it is not so farfetched that it can be enjoyed by readers of all ages. The author's storyline and character development are richly done that as a reader you feel you know them personally. I feel if I say too much it can give away the book, so with that said I urge readers to add this to their bookshelves.

Son picks up the torch - almost literally - from his monster hunting father and, with the help of a grizzled veteran battles all the things that go bump in the night.
Like, all of them.
A fun idea, but done much better elsewhere. [Dresden Files, Supernatural, etc.].
This book would have been so much better if it focused on one monster type instead of kitchen sink, find, fight, move on cycles.

Joshua grew up listening to the tales his father told, grave and dangerous stories of monsters, featuring his father and a man known as Digger. Joshua is a skeptic, but he can't deny the things he has seen: a snake-like woman and the flaming sword that defeated her. After his father's mysterious death, Joshua is bequeathed the flaming sword and a lot of questions because the death was far from common or straightforward. So, he goes on a quest to find the Digger and get some answers for himself. I cannot tell you the pure delight I felt when I got to the part where they traveled to New Orleans. Because I have so desperately wanted a book that features voodoo. There is so much general paganism and Christianity in horror. I was just craving some good voodoo because it is so powerful, fascinating, and formidable. You just don't mess with it, as Joshua was soon to learn. What were there? Zombies, lwa, vampires, ghouls, and more. Mixed in with some mysticism, blood, and, yes, an appearance with the Great Papa Legba. I was so happy when he was summoned that I could have melted. I can't gush enough about it. Joshua finds love along the way, which was just so sweet. But the more he travels with Digger, the more the mysteries grow and the danger to him. He must learn to channel his power to save the people he cares most about. The "final" scene at the paranormal convention was great fun because I imagine all the spectators were just amazed at the "show" that was put on. Tons of little twists and turns keep the plot vibrant and fast-paced. Definitely a great time and a fun read.

Please note: I was given a copy of this book and have voluntarily decided to give it this honest review.

Joshua Bennet was raised by his father, who used to tell him incredible stories about his battles with supernatural creatures that he had with his partner, Digger, before he was born. These stories were so entertaining that he wrote them all in journals and kept them. When he is seven years old, he is attacked by a shape shifting monster that he father kills with a flaming sword. His father warns him that he will have to battle monsters when he becomes a man and enrolls him in martial arts classes. When Joshua graduates college and moves to Philadelphia he learns about his father’s death. At the funeral he decides to find his father’s mysterious partner, Digger, and travels to Connecticut, Maine and New York, where he finally meets Digger. Digger tells him that his father’s incredible stories really happened. They team up and investigate an unusual sighting of zombies in New Orleans. I enjoyed reading this book and looked forward to the next city that Digger and Joshua would go to. During these adventures, Joshua discovers the interaction of the supernatural with the real world as well as unexpected information about his parents.

Following Josh from his childhood encounter with a supernatural creature to his adulthood following his father’s footsteps in fighting such beings totally showcases Arjay Lewis's ability to spin a story that's hard to put down. We see Josh grow from a partially doubting young man to someone you want to have at your back. He tracks down his father's old partner, Digger, who schools him in the reality of his father's legacy and whew. What a schooling! His characters are very believable and relatable (as usual) and I'm looking forward to what's next for them.

Bizarre journey into the unknown

When Joshua loses his father mysteriously, he is on a mission. Who is his father's friend and why is he called the Digger? The Digger is not easy to find and Joshua must find him as he has all the answers. The answers are too horrifying and Joshua almost loses his life encountering malevolent entities. A page turner with jaw dropping suspense and good world building. I was totally captivated.
