This story is mainly about one of the twins, Layla. From book 1, The Athena Effect I was quite curious of her. Moreover when she met Ramon in The Mackenzie Legacy and there is a connection between them. So I was happy knowing she is the focus in this book, though I have to admit that I couldn't get enough of Cali and Cal, either.

Since it's about Layla, now I feel I know and understand her better, about her feeling and the way she thinks. She, along with Michael weren't raised in an isolated place, unlike her cousin, Cali yet she is as naive and innocent as Cali. In some part I more pitied her because she once lived in what most people think sophisticated live. She drives sophisticated car and knows well about winery but has never been to a drive-through, she doesn't even understand simple jokes. Just like Cali, she is a walking contradiction but lived in a limited sophisticated live style. On the other part, her naiveté were quite annoyed me. I just couldn't believe . I understand her reason, I really do but didn't she curious and afraid of him?

However, I liked the antagonists in this series getting more evil in each book, from the crazy scientist to a greedy bodyguard and then the creepy evil senator. We knew from end of book 2, The Mackenzie Legacy, Senator Reed wants to have revenge to Layla, his obsession to Layla continues in this book. But I think this book was slower that its prequel, therefore his creepiness didn't feel as creepy as book 2. While I read, I kept waiting what will happen to her and then when it happened I feel it was too easy, though I still felt the tension when . As the third book in the series I want it has more tension, action and drama in this book. .

It seemed most things happened way too easy because of Layla and Cali's ability which didn't explain more either, at least I didn't feel I know more about the synesthesia. I also kind of questioning.

As for the romance, I love Layla and Ramon relationship. I was looking forward to it since they first met in book 2. Ramon is so sweet and kind to Layla and they have funny awkward meetings before they trust each other. I can’t help to not love them as I love Cali and Cal.

All in all I enjoyed and liked reading it. I hope The Redcastle Redemption can describe a lot of things that are still unclear in first three books.

This must be Lyla on the cover, she's so pretty here and I love the new cover for The Athena Effect (The Athena Effect, #1) by Derrolyn Anderson & The Mackenzie Legacy (The Athena Effect #2) by Derrolyn Anderson . I can see the similarity and look great for the series. I bet it'll look awesome on my book shelf. Wish Derrolyn has it on paperback edition.

After reading:

There's only one reason that this book didn't get 5 stars, and that is the first half. It was slow, and mostly consisted of what I guess can be called a love triangle. During that time I did get to know Layla though, and she's definitely developed into a much better character since the last books!
As I said, the beginning was slow, but as soon as it started to pick up, which was somewhere around the halfway mark, it was really good! The pages went by as fast as I can snap my fingers, and I found myself completely immersed in the story: especially after the epilogue, which sounded really promising! The one thing that annoys me slightly though, is how I don't really get into the story before the end, because of the slow start.
The action and intense/exciting moments didn't show up for a long time, which is too bad. They are most definitely one of the strengths in these books, along with the character development! It wasn't just Layla who had developed a lot, but Michael and Caledonia too! Michael is a lot nicer and smarter, for one. He worries about Layla and doesn't put himself above everyone else. All together he's more likable; the same with Caledonia, who has become a lot stronger!

3.5 stars!

You can read this review and more on my blog:

I received a free copy of this book from the author

I have to admit that I wasn't the biggest Layla fan before this book. She can be a little spoiled and childish, but now I like her almost as much as Cali! She is still childish at times, but that is really a part of her charm. She is so full of life and joy and she really just wants to be free to live her life with the people she loves. She and Cali, have a lot in common Like their shared ability to see and effect people's moods and the fact that are both have an endearing innocence about them, but I think that it is the differences between Layla nad Cali that I enjoy the most. Cali is more likely to be mature and realistic than Layla and she is a bit of a tomboy, but Layla is very spirited and 100% girly girl. Calie would be the woman you want to have your back in a fight, and layla is the girl you call up when you're in the mood to power shop. they are both very strong in different ways, and I like that the author managed to make two very different but equally likeable characters.

Now, for the portion of the review that is always the easiest for me to write, the part where I talk about the romance. The relationship between Layla and Ramon was as well-developed and almost as enjoyable to read about as Cali and Cal's relationship. I say "almost" because no one can really top the two Cals. (I mean come one? they are so meant for each other that they share the same nickname!) Besides, I liked them first, and everyone knows that the first always holds a special place in your heart. It didn't feel like the author was trying to top or copy the relationship that Cal and Cali have. Why would she? We already have their story. No, Layla and Ramon have their own brand of cuteness.

One thing that really stood out for me with their relationship was how comfortable Layla was with her attraction for Ramon. I am all for the virginal heroine, but I feel like virgins get a bad rap in books. Just because a woman has never had sex, that doesn't mean she is afraid of it! Layla was neither a prude nor promiscuous, and I like that just fine.

And I don't blame her for wanting some kisses from Ramon. Not only is he a cop (I loves me a man in uniform!), but he was a reformed bad boy by the time she met him. Tha means that he is all the fun of the guy that you know you should stay away from and all the safety of the guy who you should marry. It's a win win situation, and Layla is a lucky girl. Even Cali wasn't luck enough to meet Cal after he decided to grow up and be a good man. She met him right when he was choosing what type of person he wanted to be and inspired him to become a great guy, but he was a bit of a dog when she met him. Ramon was all grown up before he knew Layla existed and chose to be a good man without any influence from her at all. Gotta love a reformed bad boy!

This book is my second favorite in the series, and I love the way this author writes about new love. She captures the intensity, nervousness, and passion so well, and she does it all without ever being crass.

There was a cliffhanger at the end of this book, but the characters are all in a good place right now so I am happy. I think I can wait until the next one comes out, but you better bet that I will read it as soon as possible!

Because of mild language, violence, and sexual content, I would recommend this book for ages 14 and up.

This is killing me. I hate cliff hanger endings with books/series I like because then I'm just dying to know what happens and of course I don't get to know. Especially since there was this giant buildup during the entire book! We know that something is going to happen.

I really enjoyed how Layla was the emphasis in this book, which is pretty easy to figure out based on the cover. Cali and Cal take a backseat to her story, and her growth. She's very much like Cali; she's extremely knowledgeable and sophisticated in somethings, utterly ignorant in others. I cracked up laughing when we find out she has never been through a drive-thru! Because really, for kids like me that was a staple of any childhood, how could you not have ever ordered off that big plastic screen?

We didn't really learn anything new in this book, and that's maybe the only thing I wasn't satisfied with. There was progression as far as Teddy and Blackwell both coming close to getting their hands on Layla, but we're no further to discovering anything that we didn't know before, like Layla's father's identity. That being said though, I was happy with the book. It moved along and kept me entertained throughout. The other guy's part didn't really seem necessary, although I'll admit I thought Blackwell hired him at first. But I loved Layla's development from starting with the shallow (yet sophisticated) guy to the down-to-earth, real guy. Derrolyn has a gift at making relationships flow naturally and seem unhurried, which I love. Generally my tastes veer away from the love stories because they're so damn predictable and over the top. You meet someone once and you're soulmates!? No. With this series, with Cali and Cal and with Layla and Ramon, it felt natural. They were hesitating at first, but followed the natural flow of events. It's not like in other romance novels where the guy says something like "you have beautiful eyes" and the girl goes "oh no will he ever like me!?" I hate that. You obviously know the guy's interested, stop being difficult! But that's not an issue here, and I can't stress enough how much I truly appreciate that about this novel/series.

I'm curious to see how Agent Kim's part will play out. It's easy to see she's a love interest for Michael, but I do hope she has a larger part to play in the end for the entire group, particularly Cali and Layla. I've come to really like and care about these characters, so I can't deny I want a happy ending for all involved. Not including Blackwell or Teddy, of course.

The author has done a fantastic job with this book. Layla is the main focus in The Caledonian Inheritance and I have enjoyed watching her change into the woman she finally becomes. Cal and Cali are as much in love as ever and Michael, well Michael is feeling very badly about not believing Layla about Max and is feeling a bit guilty about that. The four of them have settled into their new lives but there are still obstacles in their way. I am happy the Layla found herself a love as true as Caledonia and Calvin's, she never expected that for herself. I am now very frustrated....I get to the end of the book and find out there is one more in the series....good grief!! Please don't do this to me, LOL. I can't wait to get my hands on the next book. I highly recommend the entire series for adults as well as YA readers.

I really enjoyed Layla. She is so put together and yet so childish from her years of captivity. She might take advantage of people because she doesn't know better, but I liked the way she seized life. Y'know, at least, Cali grew up with loving parents, Layla is totally screwed up. She's high maintenance and she knows it. But there's definitely more to her than her luxurious tastes. Her story is so sad.

What was she supposed to say? What could she say? That she’d witnessed every perversion known to mankind but she’d never been asked to a dance? That she’d been trained to manipulate people and steal their money from the time she was old enough to speak? That with one glance she could make him laugh, or cry, or maybe even… fall madly in love with her?

Layla really has to reevaluate her life and values. Manipulating people is like breathing to her.

Layla replied, trying to understand why giving the girl a little extra sense of urgency would be so wrong. Layla had seen plenty of real wrongdoing, and it looked very different to her. Completely different.

She's got to sort through what she believes in.
Layla and Michael are both 21 but they seem like children compared to 18 year olds Cal and Cali. Especially with Cal taking on the Dad role since he's the only “normal” one. Their new living arrangements have the four of them staying together.

Layla is a bit fancy but I like that she never really crosses into snobby or uppity territory. And I love that she is so loyal to her new family. She's unfamiliar with colloquialisms which is one idiosyncrasy that never fails to get me giggling.

“Don’t you want to have sex with me?” she asked.
He nearly choked. “Uhm… uh… Of course I do.”

Michael still feels guilty about everything that happened to Layla so he's more than obliging. I also think he misses his close relationship with his twin. I wasn't quite impressed with the introduction of is love interest.

Cal and Cali continue to be boringly sweet like an old married couple. But it is a little more humorous through Layla's eyes since she can see every emotion and see what a colour fest it is.

Layla's love interest is the bumbling Ramon. I have to like him for the very fact that he's a little hard on Layla and doesn't worship at her feet. I was really happy and thrilled to go along for the ride of their hard-earned romance. So much more interesting than the Cals. Sorry!

She was a mystery that he knew he could spend a lifetime trying to solve.

Just a few questions I have...

First off I have to say that this series just keeps getting better with each installment.

The Caledonian Inheritance focuses mainly on Layla. We get some interaction with the others but the story is centered around Layla and what is going on with her. It was nice to learn more about her.

All four, Caledonia, Calvin, Michael and Layla are living in a house together while they make plans to build a big house on their property where their parents lived. In the previous books I had mixed feelings about Layla. I didn't like the way that she manipulated people all the time. But at the same time I felt bad for her with her upbringing and all. In this book though she has really started to come into her own. She is living life and has a great new boyfriend, Ramon. I am happy with this because when the last book ended I was hoping that they would end up together. He is a great guy and a police officer in the town where Layla now lives. I found myself laughing at times when they are out somewhere. Things that are so common to Ramon like going to a fast food drive-thru are all new to Layla.

Things are going great for Layla until she decides that she wants to see if she can find out who her father is. The one person that she thinks would know is Professor Reed. All he seems to do is cause more problems for Layla and her family and will do whatever it takes to finance his crazy projects. When he sets up a meeting with Layla this is where things go from bad to worse. Will Layla ever be able to get away from the Professor? What will happen when Ramon finds out about her powers? There is so much more great things that happen but I'm not going to give away any more.

This is a great series that I highly recommend reading. I can't wait to start reading the final installment, The Redcastle Redemption. This e-book was provided to me for review. This did not affect my review in any way.

Did I enjoy this book: I was actually a bit worried I’d have to read a third book about Cal and Cal being in love. I enjoy them, but it’s true: the part that happens AFTER the Happily Ever After isn’t usually very interesting. I was, then, pleasantly surprised when Anderson shifted the focus of the third book in her Athena Effect series to a different character. Layla isn’t my favorite of the bunch, and I’m not exactly sure why we needed the not-really-a-love-triangle bit in the first half of the book, but I still enjoyed the read. Reading about Ramon helped too. Yum.

Well, I’m on to the last book in the series. Wish me luck!

Would I recommend it: Yep! If you enjoyed the first two books in the series, keep reading!

This series is just so much fun! Every time it seems like our amazing aura-readers may be safe, the stupid, bad-penny professor screws them over again! Why haven't they killed that guy?

This book is dedicated to Layla's story. I don't like her even a tiny bit as much as Cali, or Cal, but she gets a bit better as we delve deeper into her character. She is a shopaholic, a prissy girl, high maintenance, and used to manipulating everyone around her. So, she meets one guy who seems like a Niles Crane kinda guy, and then a hottie latin cop. I'm on Team Latino Hot Stuff.

At the end of The Mackenzie Legacy, our new family unit of Calvin and Caledonia & twins Layla and Michael have escaped their enemies.
The Caledonian Inheritance starts not long after, with the quartet settled in a house and slowly rebuilding the missing pieces of their lives.
It was nice to see Michael come into his own instead of acting like the bitter and selfish character he has been so far. You really get a chance to see his love for his sister and his inner strength flourish outwardly.
Calvin mostly serves to support Cali and unlike the last novel, is now the primary voice of reason.
Caledonia finally gets the chance to work with animals instead of wasting her talents gambling. I loved watching the shift of emotions or colors she and Layla see in one another. Before we mostly had to rely on Cali's perspective without watching her. It was also fun watching her childhood skills come into play, particularly the moment she pulls a knife out of nowhere.
Layla's additional perspective continues to enrich and strengthen this series. Again I found her story the most intriguing, perhaps because she's such a flawed but fun character. She hides behind a polished, prissy exterior but is vulnerable after the events of Mackenzie Legacy. Her crusade to rebuild her grandmother's home was interesting, and teased us with hints of the cousins's ancestral origins in Scotland.
Officer Ruiz was a nice addition to the crew. Besides being delectable eye candy, he is an honorable guy and very interested three dimensional hero. His laid back, genuine approach was the perfect foil to Layla's A-type personality.
Looking forward to reading the next installment and learning more about these witchy women and their adventures.
Derrolyn Anderson continues to impress and draw the reader in with compelling characters, heartfelt romance and ingenuity.
