A lovely story between two people that have to confront the demons from the past…

description

Lindsay at the age of 17, was abused by her friend, and for that reason she is trying to hide. She ends up in Hawaii. She signed up to the University and she found a job in a bar…

description

where she met Nick. Nick was a soldier to Afganistan and he went to Hawaii because he has his own reasons to looking for a hide out…Something happened to Afganistan that couldn’t let him feel calm again. He is studying to the same university with Lindsay, and he is trying to start a new life...

description

description

He is not ready for any relationship but when he is meeting the cute waitress Lindsay…WOW!He is willing to do everything for her.He needs her next to him and he is doing many efforts to make her his girlfriend and to meet her better..

description

He is teaching her how to surf and they both are volunteers in a group campus Students Against Domestic Abuse (SOADA).

For Lindsay wasn’t so easy at the beginning to trust him.It was so hard and painful for her, even to try.

“I could hear my heartbeat drumming in my ears and it made me hate Nick. Hate that he did this to me. Hate that I couldn’t control how I felt when he was near”.

So when they eventually become a couple, and they start to spent many hours together, and to live with passion,

description

Lindsay has some issues..and she is leaving…something that I didn't found it smart at all...

But of course Nick regrets this decision and he is going to find her...

“ I am going to find her, and make sure she’s alright because I do love her”.

Another very interesting character was Gabe…he is funny, charming and fabulous friend. He is advising Nick for many things. Raoul and Ieesa, the bar owners are fantastic. Raoul was like a father for Lindsay.

Can't wait for the next book :))

Hidden is a summer read since the events are taking place on
Hawaii. It wasnt a mindblowing book for me as I found it a little predictable and too sugared up for my taste. It's not that I dont like sweet guys but he was trying so hard and sometimes I was bored.Maybe it's the heroine's fault because her character wasn't dynamic. She was so shy and often pathetic.

Lyndsey

Nick

Both of them have come to this place in order to forget their pasts and start their lives from the beginning. They have secrets that wont't let them move on.Nick used to be a soldier so you can guess that the things he had seen weren't pretty. In fact he is blaming himself for an incident that happened there and I have to agree that it was partly his fault.I only forgive him because he was young and sellfish so he was acting only with his heart and not with his mind.

Lyndsey had a difficult life. She was abandoned by everyone except from her boyfriend. As time was passing she became more and more attached to him.Sadly, her boyfriend started to change his attitude towards her and things didn't end up well.

When these two meet each other at the restaurant where Lynds is working we can see that the attraction is obvious. She is a challenge for him and he feels the urge to protect her.

I'm really not a violent guy , Lyndsey , but I'd have to kill anyone who ever hurt you.

Ummm yeah that quote was not the best choice.Dont worry he is not dangerous ;)

Ok these two have the hots for each other and Nick is trying so hard to be with her but Lynds doesnt feel good enough so she shuts him down many times.Let alone that she wont even open up while he says everything to her.

The MCs are trying hard to make a new start but Lynds is kind of messing it up.It's not her fault but after all those things that happened to her she had to tell someone and I'm mad at her because she didnt.Of course I'm not going to talk about the part.I found it too childish. She is 23 years old and she shouldnt be acting like this.

The ending...

It wasnt necessary!
Let them get their HEA and just stop it there , okay?
No need for and blah blah blah....

Overall Hidden is a light summer read which in many parts is quite enjoyable.I'm rating this with three stars for the reasons that I have already stated and because I thought that something was missing(I could use more humor). There was a point where I thought "Why so many tragedies here?" but these tragedies actually made it somehow interesting.Dont expect to read only a summer romance story , it has a few twists too. Finally,I have to admit that I liked the authors writiting style. It was descriptive and thank god I didnt have to use my dictionary.

The next book is about Nick's best friend.I'm looking forward to reading his story since he was the one that made me laugh.
He is the cocky character and I hope the author manages to write a good book about him.

Hidden is delightful summer read, that will take you on a sweet journey to Hawaii and warm your heart with charming romance. So if you are looking for pleasant beach read Hidden has your name on it!

Reading Hidden moved me from my green walled bedroom to romantic Hawaiian beach. In a matter of seconds I totally forgot about the fact that it’s raining outside and that I probably won’t see real sea in a long time. I was so captivated by this spectacular setting that everything else didn’t matter as long as I was reading Nick and Lynsdey story.

Main characters moved to Hawaii to escape. Both of them have serious problems and issues that make them isolated and scared of life.

Nick came back from Afghanistan, a terrible place which had changed him forever. Now, he’s trying to pick up the shattered pieces of his heart and mind as well as find a place to live.

Lynsdey is running from her past and struggles with choices she has made. Working as a waitress and going to college is her way to escape. She alienates herself from people and is avoiding commitment.

But when the two of them meets everything changes. Hawaii only gets hotter.

Overall, Hidden is highly recommend for fans of light summer reads with enjoyable plot, funny characters and steamy scenes.

I was given an Advance Reader Copy (ARC) of Hidden and asked to write an honest review and I am so glad that I accepted! Selena Laurence has written a beautiful love story that encompasses forgiveness and healing. Her characters are real. They have flaws and hurts and pasts that suck you in. The Hero in Hidden, Nick, is an Alpha with a hero complex but actions in his past keep him from trying to pursue Lyndsey. Lyndsey is alone in her pain and does not want to make connections with people that could hurt her or expose her secrets. When Nick and Lyndsey meet, the tension and the desire between them is palpable. Despite both of their reservations, love ensues, but not without some pain and heartbreak along the way.
This book was so well written. The characters were so normal. There wasn't any over the top drama or confusion. No nail biting angst, but plenty of strong characters making smart decisions. It was a sweet love story about two people trying to hide from their pasts and coming to terms with the decisions needed to heal and move forward with their futures. The story had a great pace and the events unfolded in a way that was both believable and enjoyable. This book is the perfect summer read and with a setting like Hawaii, it makes for great day dreams, too.
Hidden will be available July 23, 2013 and you shouldn't miss out on this sweet and sexy book. Hidden is the first in a new series called Hiding from Love by Selena Laurence and the next book, Camouflaged, will be released in October of this year. It’s actually a prequel to Hidden and will be Nick’s friend, Gabe's story. I, for one, will be watching and waiting for it after thoroughly enjoying Hidden.

Just loved this one. Absolutely my cup of tea. Good storyline, great lovestory, great characters and free of pointless angst and drama scenes. I was totally hooked from start to finish and had a hard time putting it down to take care of other thing that needed to be taken care of!
There is another story out already with a side character from this story, hope it will be as good.

Hidden is an engrossing, quick, and easy read. Nick and Lyndsey are both in Hawaii escaping from their pasts. Both of whom are hiding from their pasts rather than living in the present. They are hesitant of each other in the beginning because of what they're hiding but neither can deny the connection they feel. Nick and Lyndsey are easy to fall in love with; they're funny and honest, guarded yet full of heart. Nick's patience with Lyndsey is one of his best qualities. Lyndsey's vulnerability was hers. When they both start to let go and feel the chemistry is explosive. The moments where it's just the two of them learning about each other are very intimate. Hidden is not as steamy as others in the genre but it's just enough that you feel their passion and their pain. The secondary characters are great too. Gabe is funny and Raoul and Leesa are fantastic. All the story lines happening with their pasts and futures made for an interesting dynamic between all of the characters. I was especially happy with the turn of the events stemming from Lyndsey's past. This book is very well written, alternating between both Nick and Lyndsey's POV's. I enjoy the alternating POV, hearing Nick's feelings about Lyndsey and knowing first hand of his struggles made the story that much more interesting for me. Overall, I really enjoyed Hidden. The characters are great and the story was compelling. I'm excited to read the next installment in the Hiding From Love series.

The story was emotional and had me chuckling at times but at other times I was infuriated. I'm so glad they get the HEA

My Rating: ❤❤❤½
GOOD: The characteristics of a 3 heart book include: interesting characters, a decent storyline, and unique story elements; there was something about the story that I didn’t completely connect with; the book is a solid read. I would recommend it to a friend.
This book was provided by the author for an honest review.

My Thoughts:
Hidden was about Lyndsey Anderson and her journey to find healing for her mind, acceptance of her past, and love in her future.

Lyndsey Anderson was existing, not living, in one of the most scenic places on the planet, beautiful Hawaii. She works and goes to school...rinse and repeat. She has no friends and shuns all romantic entanglements because of her dark and troubled past. The reader doesn't find out about Lyndsey's past until her home is broken into and her past invades upon her present. But, before that happens, Lyndsey meets the handsome and equally troubled Nick Carlisle. Nick has returned from Afghanistan on the heels of the death of the woman he loved. He goes to therapy to try to recover from the crushing loss but he still cannot get over feeling as he is dangerous to everyone because he caused her death. When Nick and Lyndsey meet the attraction is palpable but both keep a discreet barrier between them. Well, mostly it's Lyndsey but Nick does not take no for an answer. He makes it his business to be where Lyndsey is and the restaurant where she works becomes his second home. Nick and Lyndsey settle into a comfortable friendship which slowly grows into more and Nick's steady presence whittle away at Lyndsey's resistance.

I enjoyed the easy progression of Lyndsey and Nick's relationship. Although there was a strong physical attraction between them, their relationship was more about their burgeoning emotional bond. At least that's how I read it. :) Both characters had issues and they kept things hidden from each other. Hidden because they didn't want to lose the chance at "normal" that they felt with each other. However, in Lyndsey's case, her hidden things almost cost her her life.

The secondary characters in Hidden were also very well done. I absolutely adored Leesa and Raoul. The small side story about Raoul was so sad and the end of that story was unexpected and highly emotional *sigh*. Raoul's situation only added to the overall heartbreaking feeling of the story. But Nick was steadfast and ever present for Lyndsey through it all. He was so sweet! I cried a little bit during their period of separation because they both tried so hard to be better. But the distance served them well because they learned how to be better separately and were even stronger as a couple when they came back together again.

The sweetest part of the book for me was when Nick and Lyndsey made love for the first time. Nick told her:

Although I rounded up my overall ranking for this book. The true rating is 3½ hearts and that is solely for one reason. The characters were a bit too angsty for my liking. I know that you often find angst in young adult and new adult reads but I just don't enjoy it very much when I'm reading. It fit within the story and it wasn't over the top but it was noticeable enough for me. Now, with that said, I did enjoy the story overall. At the end of the story the reader glimpses the setup for Gabe's story and I truly look forward to seeing what Laurence does with him.

I adored this book! It was sweet, sexy and best of all, believable. I loved Lyndsey and Nick and their friends. The author handled the tough issues in a tasteful, classy way. I don't want to give too much away but Nick is a returning war veteran who has witnessed some pretty terrible stuff and Lyndsey has a lifetime of heartbreak and trauma in her past as well. I loved seeing these two heal and fall in love.

Above all, this was a fun and enjoyable, sexy read, and had great themes of family, redemption, self-reliance, and hope. This book is a favorite!

"Sometimes love means forgiving people"

Lyndsey is running from her past. She has a new name, social security number, and new life. How long can she stay hidden without someone finding out her true identity ?

Nick is trying to move on from an experience in Afghanistan that has left him feeling responsible for the death of an innocent woman.

Lyndsey has been let down by everyone that was suppose to love her. When Nick enters the restaurant where she works instant heat is in the air. Both are broken souls trying to mend. With the urging from Gabe, Nick's best friend, Nick takes a chance and asks Lyndsey out on a date. Lyndsey hasn't dated anyone in three years and her fears keep her from accepting for a while. Lyndsey is attracted to Nick and the loneliness she feels and his persistence pays off.

Lyndsey and Nick's relationship is perfect until one day when Lyndsey's past catches up to her. The only way Lyndsey will be able to survive is to leave Nick and everything she has worked for the last three years.

Will Lyndsey be able to leave Nick and keep everyone safe ? Will Nick just let Lyndsey walk out of his life ?

This is a touching story about two broken people who need to Heal themselves before they are able to help each other. "If you love yourself--and you should--then you forgive yourself too"

Thank you for allowing me to read this story.

With the big craze at the moment of New Adult novels, it's great for those who love them as you are never at a shortage. Hidden by Selena Laurence , is the type that would if it was a movie, I would go for Safe Haven by Nicholas Sparks. In Hidden, we meet Lynsey who is a waitress studying at College and Nick - an ex-military man who is suffering from PTSD and has enrolled in classes at the University to get his life back on track. Lynsey we discover is on the run from a life she has hoped to leave behind and thought that settling in Hawaii would be the thing to do, get away as far as possible where no-one would look for her. She has managed to keep a low profile until now , Nick is back from the war and he seems to be attracted to Lynsey despite his reservations of getting close to anyone ever again. What starts out as a friendship and maybe a little more , will be destroyed when Lynsey's past catches up on her . Will Lynsey be able to escape and start fresh or will she realise that this time around she has finally found a family and friends who care and would do anything and absolutely everything for her ?

Lyndsay left her old life behind an escaped to Hawaii in hopes of being able to start over. She made a mistake, a big mistake, and has been running ever since. She refuses to let anyone in, aside from her fatherly boss and his wife at the diner she works at. She fears no one would want her if they had any idea what she had done.

Nick has been discharged from the military for almost a year now. He and his battle buddy and long time best friend, Gabe, pack up and move to Hawaii. While deployed in Afghanistan, Nick witnessed a horrible event and blames himself for it everyday. He's consumed by pain and guilt and fears that if he lets anyone too close, he'd also get them hurt as well.

I really like this book, it had a nice story line and kept me interested. However, I do feel that lyndsay's past took forever to come out. It was such a build up that I felt it had to be a bigger secret, but it was what I had expected.
Anyways, I did enjoy it and Nick is quite dreamy ;)

Lyndsey came to Hawaii to escape from her past. Nick is trying to pick up the pieces left from his horrible past and hopes Hawaii is the place to do it. When he sees Lyndsey for the first time he's drawn to her, even though she keeps rebuffing him he keeps at it trying to break down her barriers. As time goes by and they learn more about reach other the past catches up. Can they go through it and still be together or will it tear them apart?

Great story dealing with some difficult issues. Loved how they learn that they need to heal themselves not just each other. This is a stand alone the next book in the series is a companion novel.

I received an arc in exchange for an honest review.

This was a sweet story of love and forgiveness. From the very beginning I thought, what are they both hiding? What's going to happen? But there were no tears or huge reveals.
Although filled with secrets, drama, loss, abuse.. it was somewhat subdued for me.
Still, I thought it was a good easy going read.

Great quotes from the book..
"love is something you don't throw away, because you'll never know when you'll see it again."
"saving them won't save you." "the only person you can save is yourself."

I received this ARC for an honest review. This book made it impossible for me to put it down. I read it in 2 days. I loved it. Lyndsey and Nick just have a realistic love. The things nick was facing are things I've seen friends face. Lyndsey being strong and over coming a horrible life and ex boyfriend and moved and started over. Even when she thought she couldn't. It's totally an inspiring love story that no matter what happens, it can always get better with time and love. I loooooved this story!

When Nick , who was struggling with his military past, meets Lyndsey, who was running from hers, meet in Hawaii and find they can't be just friends they have to decide if they can be honest with each other. When Lyndsey's past catches up with her she decides to run again until fate steps in. Will Lyndsey and Nick trust each other and their new relationship enough to find a way to be safe and to love?

Perfect mix of action, description, and backstory

I escape from the reality of being elderly and past the probability of having another love by reading your stories. Your story and characters are endearing, the vocabulary appropriate, editing good. I will never experience Hawaii in person but you brought a little of it to me.

Review: Surj Harvey

For me, "Hidden" was a book of two halves. In one breath, I found it a "kick back and relax" Sunday read which had me feeling all warm and fuzzy because of the romance. But in another breath, certain aspects of the book really took me by surprise and left me feeling completely shocked and upset. Yup, difficult to sum this one up.

"Hidden" tells the story of Nick and Lyndsey, two individuals who moved to Hawaii to escape their demons, neither was looking for love but surprise surprise because that's exactly what they found. Although their pasts were very different, both suffered from a guilt complex and the last thing either wanted was a relationship:

Every choice you make, every moment you spend alone, every relationship you avoid is because of this. Right here. You don't deserve love. You don't deserve happiness. Not after what you've done.

Having read the synopsis, I knew Lyndsey had been abused by her partner so I was completely intrigued as to why she felt this way about herself. Where did the guilt come from and why did she feel unworthy of love? As for Nick, again, I thought I had sussed the reasoning for his behaviour.... I mean serving in Afghanistan, I could only think of one reason why there was guilt. Had he made a wrong decision and got some of his men killed?

"You're not dangerous, Nick. You're a guy who made a mistake and all of us do every single day, so you're not alone."

"Yeah, but you're mistakes never got anyone killed."

I was so off the mark on this one!!!!

As I worked my way through the story, I was given little snippets of information and from these, I was able to put together the puzzle that was "Hidden." If wasn't difficult to work out but that didn't make it any less heart breaking. Lyndsey's trauma didn't stop when she escaped her ex husband. Unfortunately there was more to come and my heart hurt for her. Huge decisions were made on her part and I started to realise why  the past still haunted her and just how selfless a person she was.

And Nick's story was just horrific. When he finally opened up to Lyndsey, I was given an insight into the horrors of not only war but of religion and culture and it really did shock me to the core. It was graphic and left me feeling completely shattered:

... that was something she and I had in common - this aura of damage that floated around

our heels like cursed halos. Maybe it was one of those things that drew me to her; we

were both  trying so hard to be "normal" when we were anything but.

But you can't save someone until you save yourself and this was the realization both characters would have to come to.

The first half of the book was a walk in the park for me. It focused on the cat and mouse game Nick and Lyndsey were playing. He had decided to give in to temptation and she was trying desperately to run from it. Nick was relentless in his pursuit and I loved it. It gave me those heart fluttering moments when you see two people on the verge of finding happiness, where they have those intense moments where they almost do but they don't... and you're screaming inside for them to just get it on!!!! lol.

But the second half of the book was very different. The tone of the book seemed to change from a light read to a book that was quite heavy and that touched on some very serious subjects matters. To a degree I was expecting it but definitely not in the detail I got. It was definitely graphic is some parts but I guess that just made the reasons for their behaviour all the more understandable.

The secondary characters all added a little something to the story from Raoul and Leesa who were big supporters of Nick and Lyndsey's relationship but had heart breaking problems of their own to Gabe who had me chuckling at times. Another tortured soul who will be getting his own book!!!

Overall, I enjoyed this book. It gave me romance, sex (not that that's the be all and end all.... lol) and there was a good deal of drama in the second half which you'll need your put your big girl panties on for.

I rated this book 3.5 Hearts

5 AMAZING STARS!

I received an ARC copy of Hidden from the author in exchange for an honest review.

Hidden is the first book in the Hiding from Love series by Selena Laurence and I have to say, I thought it was fantastic! I definitely want to take a moment to say thank you to Selena Laurence for allowing me the opportunity to read and review this book! I was hooked from the start and had a hard time putting it down. From the very beginning I wanted to know more about these characters. What they’d been through, why they were hiding, and above everything else if they could work through their pain to be together. Thank goodness Hidden was written from alternating POVs so that I could get a glimpse of what both characters were thinking/feeling throughout the story.

I know I’ve said it time and time again but I love broken characters. Their flaws make them believable and real to me and that’s exactly what Selena Laurence delivered; real and believable characters. Hidden introduces us to Lyndsey and Nick; two broken souls who have both moved to Hawaii to escape the past and start over. Both of these characters are emotionally unavailable at the beginning of this story and have sworn off relationships due to their complicated nature…until a chance meeting at Lyndsey’s place of employment, The Grill. After Nick lays eyes on Lyndsey, he’s immediately drawn to her and wants to get to know her better. Lyndsey, however, continuously shoots him down. She won’t even go for a cup of coffee because she believes she doesn’t deserve love or happiness. Lucky for us, Nick isn’t the type to give up that easily.

“That’s all it takes Goldilocks,” he answered. “Just once.”

As time goes on, Lyndey’s walls start to crumble and I don’t think she knows she’s let Nick in until it’s already happened. When Lyndsey’s past suddenly crashes into the present, Hidden takes on a darker feel and we come face to face with the demons she’s been running away from.

Lyndsey moved to Hawaii three years ago with nothing but her dog Jack to start over. She’s not a very social person and has only allowed herself to get close to the couple she works for. From reading the book’s blurb I knew that Lyndsey had been abused, which ultimately led to her move to Hawaii. What I wasn’t prepared for were the additional sacrifices Lyndsey was forced to make in order to begin a new life and escape her past. Lyndsey was a very complex character and she had a very hard time coming to terms with her feelings for Nick. She continuously shoots him down believing that when he knows her secret, he won’t want her. That he won’t understand. At times I felt that Lyndsey was just plain stubborn and needed to give in already but I tried to remember that her past had a lot to do with her apprehension. Hidden follows her inner turmoil regarding Nick and the feelings that surface after meeting him.

Nick is a discharged soldier who is trying to escape a tragedy he experienced in Afghanistan. He’s been unable to move on in life because he keeps blaming himself for the death of an innocent. He moves to Hawaii after his best friend Gabe suggests that he start over. I can’t say enough good things about Nick. I loved his character. He was a big, strong soldier yet he was gentle and kind. Yeah, he has his moments but overall I thought Nick was just an all around good guy. The only problem is, he doesn’t love himself. He can’t get past the guilt he feels for what happened in Afghanistan and this guilt plagues his present life in Hawaii as well. After meeting Lyndsey, Nick thinks he has finally found someone he can save. He wants to be the man she opens up to, the one she tells her secrets too. But can he save someone else if he can’t save himself? Hidden follows Nick’s struggle to let go of his past and move forward.

Overall, Hidden was a beautiful story between two characters I grew to love oh so much. I rooted for them, prayed for them and fought with them through this entire story. While some of the secrets in this book were a little predictable, others caught me by surprise which kept me on my toes. I was also a big fan of the side characters as well. Gabe, Leesa and Raoul all played a huge part in the growth of both Lyndsey and Nick. Their stories captivated me just as much and I can’t wait for the next book in this series, Camouflaged (Hiding from Love, #.5), to be released. Camouflaged is the prequel to Hidden and takes place after Nick is discharged from the military…it’s Gabe’s story!

I highly recommend this book as it was a very well written, enjoyable read that I could easily use to escape a rainy Sunday in DC and spend a few hours on a beautiful beach in Hawaii!

Review Copy from the Author

Hidden is the first volume in Hiding from love series. I don’t know how many books there will be, but the next hero is Nick’s best friend. The author is now working on his book.
The novel is part of the New Adult literary genre, which is actually trendy in North America. It’s also my third New Adult book from three different authors. I won’t say that I’m going to give up my traditional contemporary romances for NA stories, but since I loved the three that I read, I know I will read some more.
Hidden is also my first book from the author, Selena Laurence, and her first NA. In my opinion it’s a hit, because I loved it and read it without a pause. However Selena is not translated into French yet.
I loved the mix between humor and emotion. The two are well handled by Selena: we really laugh and we really cry while reading the novel.

The story takes place in Hawaii, which is not our heroes’ native island. The title of the book is very well chosen. Indeed, Nick Carlisle and Lyndsey Anderson end up in the island to start a new life. When they meet, Lyndsey has been there for three years and Nick just arrived. In addition to studying, the young woman works in a bar with a couple, Raoul and Leesa, who have a big influence on the story. I loved their story too.

I also loved the two main characters, even though I preferred Nick. Lyndsey is the one with the hardest past. But it’s tolerable for me; I’ve got strict standards about what I can stand in a book, in terms of hard past.
She rejects him repeatedly. However she’s never cruel, which is a very good thing, otherwise readers may not be happy. LOL We know quickly everything about her past and current life, that’s why readers are not very surprised when she reveals the truth. But it didn’t prevent me from shedding a tear.
Although it’s not obvious, Nick is sure about who he is, his feelings and what he wants for his future. He also tries not to succumb to his desire: even though he can’t stop pursuing Lyndsey, he does not give up the battle. Even though his past is less awful than our heroine’s, I can say that he had a hard time. However, we don’t know a lot about him until he talks about it himself. Well, chin up!

The main difference between a NA book and a YA one is the presence of sex scenes. I can certify that after three books. LOL Hidden doesn’t break this rule and contains a lot of sexual tension and hot sex scenes, which are well described, by the way. But the book also contains numerous moments of complicity and tenderness between the heroes. In my opinion, it’s a very complete story.

The only flaw is the way the author chose to resolve the last obstacle for our couple’s HEA. Generally, I’m not very fond of long separations but when the conflict is not resolved in a “natural” way, i.e. without exterior dramatic elements that force the heroes to finally change their mind, it makes my teeth grind and I seriously doubt that they can be happy together. Don’t be afraid, Nick and Lyndsey are separated for only a few months and the heroine had an excellent reason to act the way she did, so that prevented me from being very angry. And then, they stay in touch during their separation, so the reader can appreciate their ties. And when I closed the book (more accurately, when I turned off my kindle LOL), I believed in Nick and Lyndsey’s future.

I can’t talk about the themes in the story because it would reveal too much to the readers. Just know that they are sad and serious ones, but the story is never sorrowful. There are intense feelings, but they are all rightful. Selena never insists on the dramatic events of the past, so readers feel pain for the heroes, but they can move on quickly. And even if the themes could be dealt with in a traditional contemporary romance, the style of the author and the setting of the story make me think that the novel couldn’t be transposed with more mature heroes who have a comfortable life. I think that the originality of a NA book is the fact that readers know that if the heroes were older, the entire story would be different. You can’t just change the character’s age and say it’s a different literary genre, it’s more complicated than that.

In conclusion, Hidden is a very intense book which I encourage you to read. Unlike YA books, NA can be read and loved by a lot of romance readers. However, here is a little advice: Don’t read this book in public transports because people will think that you are crazy, either because you are laughing, or because you are crying. And if there is one thing to remember from this book, it’s Memento vivere (Remember to live).

Verdict: 4 Beautiful Letdown Stars!

Hidden gives a new and refreshing spin to the age old story of boy meets girl and they fall madly in love. I’ve always been curious to know what difficulties young war veterans face once they return home. Many develop PTSD and this book, though a work of fiction, sheds light on the disturbingly common disorder. The author does a great job on showcasing veterans not as violence-crazed individuals, but as humans who suffer greatly as a result of their served time. Everyone deserves to be forgiven and certainly a second chance at life and love.

Running from a dark past, Lindsey Anderson escapes from her hometown in Illinois in hopes of reinventing herself in beautiful Hawaii. At 21, the blonde dread-locked beauty works as a waitress at a popular bar & eatery, The Grill, while putting herself through college. In the three years since her arrival, Lindsey has established a strong connection with her employers Leesa and Raoul. The married couple has grown to love her as a daughter and look out for her well-being. Having survived a deeply troubled past, Lindsey is careful to keep her demons hidden and maintain a healthy distance from people (especially hot men). Although beautiful, she has convinced herself that allowing any man into her life would be a very bad idea. The only companion she’s happy to keep is that of her canine best friend, Jack.

Lindsey’s not the only one hiding on the lovely island…

Nick Carlisle (hot guy extraordinaire) is a 22 year old Afghanistan veteran also looking to rebuild his life. At 18, he enlisted in the army alongside his best friend Gabe, in search of adventure and instead got a heavy dose of reality followed by tremendous guilt. Nick is a surf enthusiast with a kind heart and a gentle soul. Afraid to love, he’s been avoiding intimacy for the sake of not having to relive the fearful past that haunts him. That all changes, the day he and Gabe set foot in The Grill and he lays his gorgeous eyes on Lindsey… sparks fly. Stricken by her beauty, and taunted by Gabe for forgetting how to use his male parts, Nick is determined to get to know Lindsey.

The journey they embark on is heartbreakingly beautiful. Both Nick and Lindsey don’t feel deserving of love, happiness and a “normal” life. Their struggle as individuals and a couple is something we could all learn from. In order to truly love anyone else, one must wholly accept themselves flaws and all. The universal theme of forgiveness is nicely addressed, becoming a key to unlocking the happiness these tragic ridden characters so badly need and desire. With the help of Nick’s therapist and Raoul and Leesa’s words of wisdom, our protagonists make strides towards their happily ever after. Not before encountering some major personal roadblocks along the way. Lindsey, while basking in the glory of Nick’s affections, makes a startling discovery. Her past finally catches up with her, jeopardizing not only her blissful present and hopeful future, but more importantly her precious secret. Revealing her secret to Nick may bring an end to her short lived happiness in paradise. Will she keep running from her demons or will they finally be put to rest?

So much happens in this book, various subplots working together to bring about The Beautiful Letdown.

“The Beautiful Letdown is where meaning and hope invade our greatest and worst moments. The Beautiful Letdown is where we live, who we are, and where the future begins.”-Jon Foreman (Switchfoot lead singer)

Hidden , is a wonderfully heartfelt and real story of three broken yet undefeated souls in search of new beginnings. I mention three, because towards the end we get a hint that Gabe has some soul searching of his own to do. I can’t wait to read his story and anxiously look forward to his novella. The character development was pretty solid, though I wished Lindsey wouldn’t have put Nick through so much emotional hardship. I feel like she took a bit longer than I would have preferred to let him back in and finally live her life…memento vivere. Overall I genuinely enjoyed this book and would certainly recommend it.
