The Christmas Basket

More than ten years ago, high-school sweethearts Noelle McDowell and Thomas Sutton planned to elope--but then he jilted her. This Christmas, Noelle is home to celebrate the holidays, and she and Thom discover they are still in love. Now only the decades-old rivalry between their mothers stands in the way of a second chance together.

The Snow Bride

Practical Jenna Campbell has done something impractical. She's met a man on the Internet and now, a month before Christmas, she's going to Alaska to marry him. Dalton Gray seems to be everything she wants in a husband -- sensitive, gallant, romantic....

On the flight to Fairbanks, she has the misfortune to sit beside Reid Jamison, who obviously isn't sensitive, gallant or romantic. However, he's not impressed with her plan to marry Dalton, a man he detests (for good reason, as Jenna later finds out). So Reid takes it upon himself to change her destination -- and her marriage plans.

Which is why Jenna ends up at Reid's cabin in tiny Snowbound, Alaska. It's currently a one-woman town (and the other woman's out of town). That leaves Reid, a bunch of eccentric old men, a few grizzly bears -- and Jenna. Kidnapped! And then there's a blizzard. The two of them alone, stranded in Snowbound...

Two stories for the price of one:

The Christmas Basket
10 years ago Noelle McDowell was jilted by Thomas Sutton, her high school sweetheart. Now she’s come home for Christmas and finds out that the both still have feeling for each other. The problem? Their moms don’t get along.

This was your typical Christmas romance story with some pretty funny scenes between the 2 moms. Their quarrel made the story enjoyable. Noelle and Thom’s relationship issues were settled quickly once they started to talk and the outcome was predictable. The story was fun though and I enjoyed it.

The Snow Bride
Jenna Campbell quits her job and flies to Alaska to meet and hopefully marry a man she met online. Her trip is sidelined by Reid Jamison when he refuses to take her to see Dalton Gray and takes her to his hometown of Snowbound instead.

This was my favorite of the 2 stories. Jenna and Reid are so perfect for each other right from the start. They have no issues expressing their dislike for each other and yet they are able to make the situation work out. Snowbound is a 1 woman town (Reid’s sister) and the men folk of the town are delightful characters that make you smile. They are a playful and happy bunch of old men. The reader knows who Jenna is going to end up with, but I loved how it all came about. Jenna’s mother is a handful, but has taught her daughter well. I truly enjoyed this light Christmas read.

First let me say that I love Debbie's books, but this book just did not do it for me. The first story The Christmas basket was about high school sweethearts that are no longer high school sweet hearts because he jilted her at the alter. But come to find out she jilted him, or so he thinks for all these years. On top of that their mothers HATE each other. The story is cute and an easy read. I don't know maybe having a migraine is what turned me off

The second story I thing is the kicker
Who in there right mind runs off to marry a man they have yet to meet well this is what one girl is doing but in the flight to Alaska she falls for a different guy. Oh the drama.

For people who like contrived plots and unmemorable, cliche, irritating characters then Macomber's romance novels are the way to go. For the rest of us, skip them and save some time.

This book had two different books in one. The first one the Christmas Basket was about two families who were best friends but an incident caused friction between them that lasted for years. But when they had to work together to make Christmas baskets they came to an understanding and they became friends again and spent the holidays together again. The second one was The Snow Bride. About a young woman who worked as an assistant for 7 years and had a crush on her boss who only thought of her as an exceptional coworker. She did everything for him but felt her path was at a stand still. She met a man on the internet so she decided to quit her job and move to Alaska to meet him. At the airport there he did not meet her there so a man she met on the plane tried to help her by flying her to the town where the man lived. When the pilot heard who she was meeting, he decided to take her to his hometown; the man she was meeting did not have a good reputation with women. He felt he should come there to meet her.

The first book The Christmas Basket was just okay to me. I really liked the second story The Snow Bride much more. I only gave it three stars because of The Snow Bride which I did enjoy.

Thus book had two stories. I'm giving it 5 stars because of the first story - The Christmas Basket. I loved the characters and laughed out loud at the feud between the mothers. So much fun!

This book actually contains two stories that were originally published individually as gift hardbacks - The Christmas Basket and The Snow Bride.

***The Christmas Basket***

There has been a feud between the matriarchs of the McDowell and Sutton families for years, one that was made worse when Noelle McDowell and Thomas Sutton planned to elope ten years ago - before Thomas jilted her. Noelle has avoided returning to Rose, Oregon since then but now her younger sister is getting married she is returning for Christmas. Noelle thought her feelings for Thom were all in the past, but a chance meeting gives them a second chance at love.

I really enjoyed this story! The characters were well developed, and the past circumstances that gave rise to the story are gradually revealed which helps add tension to the story. The clashes between the two mothers, Sarah and Mary, are absolutely hilarious, and being able to see from both Noelle and Thom's perspectives helps the story flow. I also loved how the story doesn't always take the obvious path, giving rise to some twists and turns.

Plot: 10/10; Characters: 10/10; Ending: 10/10; Enjoyment: 10/10

***The Snow Bride***

Jenna Campbell has always been responsible, but after meeting Dalton Gray in a poetry chatroom she's decided to take a chance and fly up to Alaska to meet him. However her seatmate Reid Jamison decides to kidnap her in order to save her from herself, and the next thing Jenna knows she's stuck in tiny Snowbound, Alaska with a massive blizzard about to blow into town.

This is the story I brought the book for as it sounded like a cheesy but cheerful Christmas read. It's definitely cheerful and Christmassy, but not cheesy. The lead characters Jenna and Reid are amazing, but their story is given real depth by the supporting characters who also live in Snowbound and Jenna's scatty LA-based mother. The romance is well-developed and not of the standard leap-in-to-bed kind, and the gradual emotional developments between Reid and Jenna are sweet and well-paced.

Plot: 10/10; Characters: 10/10; Ending: 10/10; Enjoyment: 10/10

***********************************************************************

Both stories are short and sweet (the whole book is only 370 pages) and are perfect Christmas reads. The only thing that lets this book down is it's cover which just isn't up to the standard of the stories.

Cover: 6/10

Overall: 46/50

DNF at page 195, a couple of pages into the second novella.

I enjoyed the first novella well enough, but I was more interested in the history and friendship of the mothers than the romance in this novel, the writing was enjoyable but everytime the book came to the romance it's just like my eyes glossed over, and even though it is a short story, it began to drag for me at those points. I also started to ignore the diary entries, I don't feel like they really added anything. Loved the sheanigans the mothers got up to though and wouldn't be opposed to a novella of just the two of them.

A few pages into the the second novella I just had to put it down, a few lines into the male love interests head and I knew that I would not be able to stand that man. In the first chapter the main female character is going to Alaska to meet a man she met online and this guy is just a jerk to her on the plane for no reason and then in his chapter he calls her prissy when really she was fine, he was just a prick.

I didn't really like these two stories, but they were not hard to read. I feel that in both stories, the characters were two dimensional, their relationships sophomoric and the constant hateful bickering when they first meet (Or in the first story, The Christmas Basket, they reconnected) did get on my nerves.
I find it amazing that in both stories it was discussed how 'intelligent' the young woman is, while displaying no evidence of any intelligence. I was especially annoyed at this in the second story, 'The Snow Bride'. The young woman leaves her job, travels to Alaska to meet some guy she had connected with online, only to be waylaid when the guy she gets into a dispute with on the plane refuses to let her go to her online 'boyfriend' when he finds out who she is about to meet. So he basically kidnaps her. Nothing she did, either before or after leaving for Alaska, would indicate that she is intelligent. Give me a break.

I always love these little anthologies from Debbie Macomber because you get more bang for your buck. I just caution you to carefully read descriptions and story titles as they often are reprinted and have possibly undergone a title change. The two titles in thie one are available as individual titles and I have reviewed them individually.

As a collection, you get a taste of Debbie Macomber's classic ability to take some quirky and fun characters, throw in a little romance, and wrap it all in her trademark holiday magic. The Snow Bride gave me some laugh-out-loud moments. The Christmas Basket touched my heart and made my eyes a little misty. It's a fun way to enjoy Christmas at any time of year.

This consisted of two novellas, I guess. Both were sweet, rather predictable stories, but nice for the holiday season.

The first, a love story of two high school sweethearts who see each other for the first time in ten years. Is the love still there? Come on, it is Debbie Macomber…of course the love is there.

The second story is a modern day tale of an e-mail ordered bride heading to Alaska. It is rather comical with her mother, a serial bride, and the all-male ( well, one other woman) town, set in the middle of nowhere Alaska. Of course, the town has the perfect name for the story, Snowbound. Think of Northern Exposure, if you are old enough to remember it and you have a decent idea of the characters.

I absolutely love this.

As soon as I seen it on sale on Amazon, I had to get it. Christmas Basket - Two former high school sweethearts whose mothers were enemies have a second chance to understand what happened the day they were supposed to elope. Snow Bride - A woman meets a man online and flies to Alaska to meet him only for him not to show up. Another guy named Reid promises to fly her to the man but diverts her when he learns whom she is supposed to meet.
Both are amazing stories by such a talented writer whom I always enjoyed her books. These stories are a particular favorite of mine. I recommend this book.

Debbie Macomber's books are cozy and fun. They are perfect for the end of the day when I need to just cuddle up with a blanket and read a book. These stories are very typical of her works. I did notice more - how can I put this? - of the soap opera-esque explanations of backgrounds or stating of the obvious in this book more than others I have read. I enjoy them as a guilty pleasure. I just hesitate to give 5 whole stars. Certainly 5 stars for Cozy Read! But, as a work of literature, 4 stars as it was pretty good but not what I would call - amazing. Either way, I will continue to read and enjoy more of her books until they disappoint, which I doubt they ever will. :)

Two novellas, both entirely predictable, and likely destined for Hallmark holiday movies. The first story, The Christmas Baskets, was annoying and I nearly skipped it. It starts with all of the characters arguing with each other. But you can guess what happens as they work out their differences. The second novella, The Snow Bride, grabbed my interest right away. Entirely predictable with a couple stuck in a cabin in Alaska at Christmas time. Still, a bit more fun than the first. Light fluffy reads all around.

When Noelle lost childhood sweetheart Thomas, who betrayed her by not turning up when they planned to elope, she was too distressed to return home. Years later, she is back for her sister's wedding. Feuding families, mothers who are best friends turned arch enemies, and a wedding to plan. Will the sweethearts let the past stay where it has to?

In the second novel, The Snow Bride, one woman has uprooted herself completely, leaving behind her job, family and life to find love in Alaska. What has she landed herself in?

Through a series of misunderstanding two friends are torn apart and starts a war between two families.

Years later more misunderstandings seperate their children from being together.

But that’s to a snow storm they realise what truly matters.

I liked the premise and the characters, but the end felt extremely rushed.

2 light Christmas stories. The first about a couple whose mothers used to be friends and are now sworn enemies. Their teenage romance went wrong - what will happen now they meet again. The second about a woman who is tired of her beige life and decides to go to Alaska to meet a man she met on the internet - but the man next to her on the plan is not keen on this idea.

There are 2 stories in On a Snowy Night. The first story was worse than the worst Hallmark movie. Those parts might have been funny in an "I Love Lucy" episode.
I finished the 1st story, hoping the next would be much better. It was! The Snow Bride was funny, interesting and had a story worth reading.

On a Snowy Night

What a wonderful story of Reid and Jenna who both had hard time sharing their feelings of love for each other. Realistic characters and fell in love with their quirkiness and the town despite the isolation and cold. S moved both of these older books by a favorite author, Debbie Macombsr. Highly recommend.

Honestly 2 1/2 stars for both stories.

Quick, easy read. Debbie Macomber's writing style has traditionally not worked out for me, but there's nothing wrong with these stories. Just not something I super-enjoy.

I didn't realize this would be two short stories and was slightly disappointed when the first one ended. However, in true Debbie Macomber fashion, I quickly moved on and got sucked into the second story.

This one was two books in one...The Christmas Basket and The Snow Bride. I did enjoy both though I felt as if I'd read them both before. I might have and just forgotten to record it here on goodreads or cross them off my list in my "to be read" notebook I have.
