BTW I Love You

Rate this book
When Aidan logs onto the Internet one night during winter break, he hardly expects to meet tall, dark, and handsome Jake - let alone discover over the course of their chats and emails that Jake may actually be...well...pretty much perfect. However, with Jake studying abroad 8,000 miles away, Aidan soon finds himself struggling with the intense feelings that he's developed for a man he's never actually met.

With an ocean between them and all of the doubts and questions that come with the distance, will their relationship ever find wings? And when they finally meet in person, can their online romance become an IRL happily ever after?

This story was written as a part of the M/M Romance Group's "Love Has No Boundaries" event. Group members were asked to write a story prompt inspired by a photo of their choice. Authors of the group selected a photo and prompt that spoke to them and wrote a short story.

Nico Jaye is a fan of all things HEA and has dragged her romance collection along for her moves from San Francisco to Los Angeles to Chicago to New York and back. She thinks reading is awesome and loves that she can hang out night after night with crinoline-wearing debutantes, brawny firemen in suspenders, and werewolf shifters with Scottish brogues. An overall feline enthusiast, Nico secretly (or not so secretly?) adores Hello Kitty, cat GIFs, spontaneous traveling, pretending to be crafty, emoticons, hot menfolk, and parenthetical statements (not necessarily in that order). Her favorite stories are those that marry smut and fluff (a.k.a. smuff) into a gooey ball of HEA and fuzzies.

You can find Nico chit chatting about cats, popcorn for dinner, impulse trips to Iceland, and crocheting four scarves in one night at any of the following:

Attend to me, for this will be one of my rare and baffling Affectionately Bad Reviews.

This was sweet.

Sweet like candy.

Like a lot of candy.

I was delighted by the techno-dating plot point. The story begins by asking a fun question about a modern idea: is it possible to feel so much for someone you've never met?

Yes, in my case.

Oh, fuck yes.

But as adorable as the main characters are, and as engaging as the author's sense of humor was, other parts of this story were not as successful for me, and mostly because I am really, really crazy.

Jake is beautiful, rich, smart, sexy, patient, thoughtful, kind, loving, athletic, and pierced.

He also drives his awkwardly chaste, ginger-kid internet-boyfriend Aiden to his palatial and tastefully-decorated abode in a $200,000 SUV—and yet the one and only thing to drive me nuts in that whole big bag o'coolstorybro was the idea that a 21-year-old man would happily have next to no sex life for seven months and calmly expect the same from his painfully naive lover.

On account of high-speed internet access and Skype.

*closes eyes and pinches bridge of nose, plainly waiting for Xanax to take effect*

But.

If the worst you can say about an otherwise sweet-natured and pleasant romance novella is that the main characters are just too wholesome to suit you and your bitter, bitter, cat-infested, 8-years-friendless-and-romantically-barren life, you should probably just eat a fucking cupcake and settle in to wait for El Señor to take you away from this place on the wings of angels who all bear a marked resemblance to a young Rob Lowe.

Alternatively, you can be a normal person and enjoy the hell out of it, while the poisonously ranty and clearly unhinged Spinster Dominican awaits the onset of his diabetic coma.

Up to you.

You thought a cynical bastard like me would throw this super sweet story away with a disgusted snort? But what people tend to forget is that even I was young once, and played with stuffed Care Bears and watched Rainbow Brite.

Anyway, Jane! Nico! How about the picture above for next year's event? Isn't it perfectly adorable? ^^

So BTW I love you is sugary sweet and will definitely put a smile on your face (unless you're Dr. Claw aka Joolz from Inspector Gadget). The young men in this short story meet over the Internet and fall in love. Their ears get a little pink when they chat, they dare not tell each other for long celibate months that they want to hook up and have hot monkey love, one of them sends the other a drawing of pink roses for his bd, neither of them takes antidepressants, Ritalin, Adderall or even secretly plans on kidnapping the other.

In other words, I'm a little out of my element here.

In fact, when I read this scene:
Aidan had turned his attention back to the package. Underneath a few layers of bubble wrap, he found a box, and inside that box, he found a smooth leather billfold in an unusual burgundy color.

I swear I read blindfold. I didn't even know what a billfold was until the MC mentioned what a great replacement it would be for his old wallet! That's when I realized my mistake too. I might be beyond help.

Also, when the two boys finally meet up, Jake gives Aidan THIS present.

"Thank you," Aidan said, otherwise at a loss for words. (...) Nobody had ever been so incredibly thoughtful as to bring him a gift like Jake's, either. (..) He rocked Aidan's world.

It's a basil plant in a pot, yes.

OMG, scoop me the fuck up and hand me the oxygen! I think I just died and went to Fluff Heaven. And you wouldn't expect it after the author had the guts to skip right over the cyber sex scenes and then went on and happily skipped their highly anticipated first meeting, only to return to it in the form of a freaking flashback, but there's actually a moderately explicit sex scene included in BTW I Love You.

Long story short, I just adored this lovely, pure and amusing story for what it was. I somehow feel more wholesome now, if you know what I mean? It reminded me of my first love and the insecurities that came with it. And it reminded me of those precious first days of the Internet. When my girlfriends and I pretended to be 18 in chat rooms, while we were anything but, and giggled when men wanted to hook up and made gagging noises when we were suddenly confronted with pictures of their dicks. O happy, innocent days!

After one year of anticipation and longing, Aidan and Jake finally meet in person... Will the reality live up to their expectations?

It was a sweet and uncomplicated story, but I was bored. It seemed much longer than it was actually.

Lovely story, but nothing special or unforgettable.

I will join in on the cute and cuddly band wagon, its a sweet and lovely story. Jake and Aiden's slow and easy relationship feels good, the weekly chats and texts are great for developing a long lasting friendship and romance. A very lovable couple, uncomplicated, happy and a definite feel good read.

Totally sweet read. I feel like I just ate a bucket of sugar and I love it. Ever need a break from all the angsty books out there? Here's your break. Its a quick FREE read that will satisfy your need for something sweet and loving.
Also it's about the start of an online romance, and god knows I'm an automatic sucker for online romances.

Great job Nico, just what the doctor ordered. I feel warm and happy on the inside now.

This! This is exactly what I was looking for. I am a hopeless romantic. I needed a good read that would help heal my heart after all the darkness and turmoil it had recently been through and this was the perfect. This short story did in fact heal my heart and made me fall in love with boys who love boys...again.

Is it possible to have a crush on someone you've never met before?

Aiden and Jake...what can I say about these two aside from I freaking love them. From Aiden talking about making sure he does not walk into a tree...again (I feel ya boy!) to Jake and his understanding of Aiden and his insecurities. These boys have earned a spot in my heart as the super sweet couple. They are perfect and they were perfect for me today. I needed their first online meeting, their chats, their emails, their Skype sessions...I just needed them.

As someone who is much more comfortable making "friends" online behind the safety of my internet bubble I "got" Aiden. Even through Skype sessions you have that barrier to protect yourself though you may want to jump in with both feet and do a cannonball into the current situation. I loved that we felt that right along with him. The worry and possible failure that you are perfect with each other, for each other online but what happens when you are face to face?

He and Jake had already shared so much through the powers of modern technology; now they just needed to translate that connection to the physical, real world.

I have to add that I LOVE that Aiden is a redhead. Being one myself, I have always loved the nickname of Red (it is mine after all) and this was the first time I heard it between boyfriends. My reaction to that? Let's just say my husband is still mopping up the puddle after each time Jake used the endearment for Aiden. Did I mention I am a hopeless romantic?

BTW I Love You is another great read I have found from the M/M Romance group. I adore each story and thank the group and the authors who commit and give their time for free for us thirty readers.

An Internet meeting of mr perfect, leading to a perfect union. Sigh, yes I'm a total sap, liking this proves that.

Jakes is gorgeous, fit, nice, has sexy piercings, has an expensive car and designer apartment.
Aiden is a clumsy likeable red-head.

The interactions are sweet and funny, with hints of more though it's kept off screen. There is NO angst, a few minutes of self-doubt but no angst. Aiden's friends warn caution but it's the concern of good friends, not malicious and only casual.

Twenty something boys; communicating for over six months without initially addressing their feelings, both celibate. They meet have a lovely day together then snuggle up for a nap instead of instant energetic smexing! Ok they get to the smexing as soon as they wake up but snuggles first that is how sweet this is.

So many awwwww moments; the cute pics, the Basil plant! I caught myself cooing as I watered my Basil plants this morning!

What a fun “cotton candy” read that was… light, fluffy and so sugary sweet! I really enjoyed it. Aiden with his geekiness, nerves, and self doubt. And Jake with his Abercrombie & Fitch good looks, pierced nipples and sweet words to comfort Aiden. What a perfect pair! I loved it!!

Nico's boys always deliver. I'm not a big fan of the sweet, but Nico's stories always have the perfect mix of cute, dirty and witty that I love. This story was no exception. Aiden make me sigh and Jake made me swoon.

Highly recommended!!!

I just finished a darker story and this looked like just the thing to lighten my mood back up.

One random spin of the wheel, or rather click of the key landed Jake and Aiden together on a chat. And as they say that was the beginning of a beautiful friendship.
Although they go to college very close to each other, Jake is in Australia for the semester.
They start a online friendship that is hard to define, at least for Aiden, especially with his friends planting little seeds of doubt in his mind, but really that's about it as far as drama goes, thank goodness.
It's a sweet, cute, feel good story and I have a soft spot for redheads so that's a plus too.
I finished and was glad to have a quick little dose of happy put back in my day.

Very cute read about two college boys who meet over the Internet. I wish we could have gotten a some cyber sex scene though instead of just a mention of it.

This could have been so good! And while it was sweet and cute, I didn’t connect all that much with the characters.

I think it was because the writing style felt a bit distant. Like being told they had had cybersex, but not being there to witness it. And since we never got Jake’s POV he felt one dimensional to me.

Overall this was cute, but I was missing something to make this a real winner.

This is a sweet short story inspired by a great picture & story prompt for the LHNB event. I liked Aidan's insecurites and how Jake was persistent, without being overbearing, until Aidan took those leaps of faith. The slow buildup of their relationship was perfect and the author gave us a very romantic HFN ending.

Offered for FREE from the M/M Romance Group's Love Has No Boundaries Anthology: Volume 6. Thank you too all the amazing authors who participated!

So besides this scene taking place on a boardwalk instead of a tall-grassy field, the story stays true to the picture given, which I always appreciate. This was a sweet, angst-free story. As much as I bitch sometimes about drama, the lack of angst may have left me from getting too emotionally involved.

I have to admit I was pretty disappointed when they skipped over the cyber sex scenes. I think this definitely could have been made into a full length, the climax/halfway point being when they meet in IRL, with some great and sexy scenes in both halves. But we did get to see some real-life smexin, so I can't complain. And I think what the author was going for in the short length was for us to really feel the progression of their relationship IRL and therefor the lack of witnessed sex prior contributed to that connection.

This FREE read was the perfect accompaniment to my lazy afternoon. The editing was great, the length was just right and the writing was very engrossing. So much tender moments between Aidan and Jake melted my heart which automatically converted me to a Nico Jaye fan.

Who knew online interactions could be so romantic?

This was a wonderful little short from the LHNB event. I met Nico through an anthology we both have a story in, and I decided to read this story to support her. I'm always a little nervous when I read books written by friends of mine because what do I say if I hated it? I try really hard not to lie but...

Anyway, I didn't have to worry because this story is delightful. I was hooked right away by this romance about two wonderful guys meeting via social networking. I've heard of chatroulette but never used it and have never seen it in a story before. This was a delightful, original, and refreshing way of having strangers connect through the Internet. (Not that it's going to get me to try another new way to waste even more time in the binary universe.)

The story also appealed to me because my sister (and best friend) moved to Australia seven years ago and I've only seen her twice since. We really only have Skype and other techy ways of seeing each other. I smiled knowingly when the MC figured out the time differences.

A couple of specific things I loved: calling Target "Tarjay." I thought that was a local thing! The sexy stuff was hot and adorable at the same time. Aiden's nervousness when they finally meet was hilarious and also adorable. Everything was freakin' adorable.

BTW, I Love You, is sweet and romantic, funny and charming, with wonderful characters that I would have liked to spend more time with. The secondary characters were interesting enough that I'd like to see their own story.

My only complaint is that I would have liked a little more conflict in the story, a little more worry and suspense. But it would have been difficult to do without messing it up. I don't like that miscommunication garbage, so less conflict rather than that, is better.

I docked half a point for having less conflict then I wanted but I rounded up so who cares. :)

Happy ending?

Gosh, this was so freaking sweet and made me so happy! I especially liked their first encounter on Chatroulette, it was funny and endearing and cute, and honestly I wish that scene was a bit longer cause I didn't want it to end.

Even though I wish I'd know a little more about Jake, both these characters were great and the relationship was fantastic.

Oh, the sweetness that kills!
Beautiful, wholesome story, to counteract all the sad and bad.
So sweet, indeed, it is almost bordering on too sweet. But I adored young Red and his Jake, and having done the internet meet thing myself, I admit, most of the situations I recognized.

Great little read. Totally great. Fluffy and good.

Wow, did I love this book, in fact I can't think of one thing I didn't like about it. But then I'm the first to admit I love me sweet romance and boy does this fit the bill.

Playing chatroulette one night Aiden and Jake met. Or should I say Batman and Wolverine met. Though they both actually go to college in the same town, Jake is currently studying in Australia. They become friends and keep in touch via the internet. Slowly Aiden realises that the chat sessions with Jake are the highlight of his week, but does Jake feel the same way and if he does where do they go from there?

Aiden and Jake were fantastic characters. I loved how you felt everything Aiden did, the uncertainty he had when posting comments, the doubts that niggled his mind. He knew things were getting more serious between the two of them - yet the logical part of him thought it wasn't possible to have such strong feelings for someone you've never met. I loved how both of them were so honest with each other - no mind games and unnecessary angst. Nico Jaye is also really funny and injects that sense of humour into the storyline.

The slow romance was amazing, it was one of those books that had your stomach clenching in anticipation. Nico Jaye wrote it so beautifully I could easily read it again (and no doubt will).

This book is a FREE short by Nico Jaye so there is no reason to stop anyone from reading it. If you like romance you'll love this - check it out.

4.5 stars. This story so perfectly nailed the eager nervousness of an unexpected new crush developing into a fantastic relationship. I loved Aidan and his leaps of faith so very much! <3 I'd love to read a sequel. The story felt totally complete but I want to spend more time with these guys! Either way, this was the first story I've read by this author but it definitely won't be the last. I'm looking forward to reading more of her writing.

Just one nitpick, I got pulled out of the story for a second when Aidan referred to going "up" to Muir Woods from what I presumed to be Calistoga. I paused to reconsider my sense of California geography, then wonder if I'd misunderstood that he grew up in Calistoga, and then I decided to just shrug it off and go with the flow of the awesome story.

Hitting it off in a chat room on their similar tastes in masks, Aidan and Jake begin their friendship. It quickly evolves into something serious the more they get to know each other. Even if they have some qualms getting involved in a long distance relationship, they realize their feelings are too fully vested not to give it a try. When the opportunity arises for them to be together, Aidan's transition from a virtual relationship to a physical one takes a little stumble. Yet Jake's feelings quickly dispel his doubts. A nice comfort read, these guys are sweet together.

This was cute. It also hit home for me since I met my husband online. I almost think it's better to "meet" online vs IRL. You tend to speak your mind more, you're more yourself, if you're just IMing there's no need to try and impress the other person with your looks. It's more natural in my opinion. Maybe I am bias?

Then the nervousness when actually meeting, even though you "know" the other person. ACK! Been there and totally understood Aidan's hesitation.

Jake was perfect, though. Reassuring, patient, calm. So sweet.
