Relentless is the second book in the Dark Prophecy series. I enjoyed the first book Reckoning, but I liked the second just a bit more. So many of the questions we were left with are answered, though not in an info dump sort of way.

Now that Kat has learned and accepted her destiny, she teams up with Lovell. He trains her in all forms of combat and reveals objects he has obtained to aid in her quest. While out in the wilderness consecrating these items, all hell breaks loose. What hell, you ask? Nope, I won't spoil it for you, you'll have to read it yourself.

Rick, the romantic interest is back, and wants to be with Kat even after she reveals the truth about everything. Opened minded guy, since he takes her word about it all almost immediately. Though he's present throughout the entire book, I still feel as though he is underdeveloped for such a main character. I suppose his background just isn't important to the story, yet if he is to be an important part of Kat's life, I want to know more about him. Instead he's just kind of there, like a vase or a lamp. Sorry, it's personal, I don't particularly like Rick...

We do learn much more about sexy, enigmatic Lovell in this book. Kat still feels that inexplicable attraction to him that drives her crazy. It bothers her even more now since she's involved with Rick. Lovell seems to feel the same pull toward Kat creating a little love triangle between the three characters.

It's inspiring the way Kat handles the obstacles placed before her. She's a strong character, eager to learn and very loyal to her friends. Kat learns much more about her ancestors including her namesake Katriona. The history of Kat's family is part of what makes this book interesting. We also learn more about Lovell's world, but much of that is rather confusing. I think we'd need an entire book to explain his world.

There were a couple plot turns that really surprised me, yet they seemed to work in the overall scheme of things. The ending is abrupt yet satisfying. I really liked the way this one ended. Though it's a prelude to the next book, it stops in a most intriguing place. Very smart way to end Relentless, Molly Hall. I'm dying for the next book just to finish the scene!

RECKONING

From so many Young Adult Fantasy / Paranormal books it becomes to be pretty hard to find something good and original. I do not refer just to the story itself, to the events that occur, but also to the feelings and reactions that the author induces. Well, I liked very much both Reckoning and Relentless. The proof is that despite shortages of time, I not resisted not to read the second volume. It was enough for the tour to read only one book, but at the end of the first volume I was restless to see what happens next. But first things first.

You will find in the Reckoning the school and its problems, and parental relationships and self discovery. But what do you want and how could they miss? It’s YA! and you assumed their presence from the moment you decided to read the book. What is important is that the author manages to convey the heroine’s feelings. I felt and understood them, and my curiosity was well stirred. Each element that appears, every detail that was introduced can change everything, nothing seems randomly. There are enough of these little details not yet used that can reverse the situation entirely and I am convinced that the author will use them in one way or another.

Since the volumes are connected (and this is obviously early enough from the first volume) the action does not seem train, boring, on the contrary. The author sets the stage for supernatural and she does it very well. The mundane problems blend wonderfully with the fantastic ones, they complement and motivate each other. There are plenty of interesting and enjoyable scenes.

Characters: you'll love them whatever role they will play and whatever changes may still occur. And once again the author will play with you and will leave sufficient open ways so that even a betrayal can come from where you least expect.

There is a love triangle! No matter what you think in general about this kind of dilemma I think you'll like this one. Why? Because so far you cannot not like both guys involved and Kat's motivations are understandable. I chose my favorite, but for the first time I have some emotions that he will not be “chosen one”. Again, details are very important and well used. New attractions and old love will face the picture (blurred yet) of "destiny VS free will." The author drew me into the game, I made plans and I was bothered when a certain relationship was going too well.

RELENTLESS

Volume two picks up the baton and continues the race successfully. If in the first volume we deal with the discovery of the “secret” and accepting fate, now the Kat's training for the supernatural, and the fights begin. Challenges, testing, rescues and travel through space and time will be take place in a sustained pace. The moments of rest are animated by visions and love triangle story which is now secondary. However, it is present and offers pleasant and exciting moments to the reader: dialogues and confrontations between rivals, and special interludes between lovers (improperly may use the term).

The villain character is more present and you start to ask yourself some questions about him. It is a cat-and-mouse game in which that poor little mouse can cause surprises. New details are brought in addition to those of the previous volume, and again, anything can happen. Betrayal, ways to survive, sacrifices, manipulation, assumed risks from love or devotion, you’ll find everything you would like and it is important that all these elements are properly used and at the right moment.

The ending takes you somehow by surprise, it leaves you on the edge and eager for the next volume.

I warmly recommended to you.

“He wishes he could forget about her. Ignore her existence. But he can’t. Because his future is irrevocably tied to hers.
Maybe he should just kill her now.”

“The photograph is obviously old, the edges cracked and torn. […] I look closer. Even though the photo is faded, the eyes still hold that intense, penetrating gaze. The gaze I’d seen in real life, just moments ago. My hand shakes and I feel slightly sick.”

“He smiled, remembering the look on Katriona’s face. Anger. Grief. Shock, mixed with horror and disbelief. Perfect.”

“There is one who will be with you, and one who will go. Do not lose faith.”

I was blown away by this 2nd book. I liked it a lot more than the first, and I loved that one. The thing with first books of a series is you have so much character building and just overall developing the story, so sometimes the story doesn’t take of as fast. Anyway, this was starts close to where the first ended, and after that cliffhanger, I was anxious to get into this one.

I found the main character Kat to grow a lot in this book, she did have times she was a bit irritating, but not near as much as Rick, who I didn’t come to like as much. He was way to jealous for no reason, and just clingy, I really loved Lovell, I sure am hoping Kat and Lovell get together, they would be a great couple I think.

I really should not say too much more, but will give you a few teasers of scenes I liked:

This one more of a tease, and shows some of Ricks aggravating ways, lol:

"We're going through the portal. We don't have a choice."
My eyes widen. "What? Now?"
"What are you talking about?" Rick asks. "What portal?"
Lovell turns to Rick. "I want you to stay here in the trees. Once Kat and I are gone, Li will leave, too. Then it will be safe for you to return to your truck."
"What the hell are you talking about? What do you mean 'when you and Kat are gone'?"
"Lovell," I say, the shakiness in my voice betraying my tension. "I'm not ready for this—"
"You don't have a choice," Lovell replies, taking my hand and moving us closer to the center of the trees. "This stops, right now!" Rick shouts. "I want answers!"
As the words leave Rick's mouth, his voice carries up the hill, and I know we've been spotted.

And this one I really like I won’t say who the guy is, lol

"Kat," he whispers.
Unable to stop myself, I rise on to the tips of my toes and bring my mouth to his. Electric fire spreads through my body, burning away the cold and chill. He wraps an arm around my waist, clasping me to his chest. My mouth opens beneath his, and I feel the energy surging through me. He spins and presses me against the wall, his hands running down my ribcage and over my hips. Everywhere he touches me is exquisite torture, igniting my skin with tingling heat that sinks all the way to my bones. I wrap my leg around his hip, pushing against him and pulling his face back down to mine. Our lips meet, hot and hungry. I run my tongue along his bottom lip, soft and smooth before he groans and his tongue catches mine. He tastes like salt and mint and the faintest trace of cinnamon.

Overall a great paranormal romance, with some magic, danger and some steam too, with some fantasy too. I highly recommend to anyone who likes these kinds of books.

This is book 2 in the ‘Dark Prophecy’ series, and kicks off where book 1 left off.
Kat is still reeling from news of what she is and the prophecy surrounding her, but Lovell wants to talk training, even if that means visiting the year 1977 in Scotland.
Where is Rachel though? Can Kat ever hope to save her? Who will Kat choose to be with – Lovell or Rick? Will the prophecy come true? And can Kat gain control of her powers?

I remember reading the first book of this series, and thinking that it was okay, but it did end on a bit of a cliff-hanger, so I wanted to read the second book to find out what happened, but unfortunately I just didn’t have the patience for ‘Relentless’.

Firstly we had the info dumps. Just loads and loads of information, all crammed together at the beginning of the story, as Lovell telling Kat about her heritage etc. This information was just incessant, and too much to take in at once, and it bored me a bit. While the information was probably necessary to move the story along, I just felt overwhelmed by the sheer volume of it, and got really bogged down.

Then we had Kat, who just came across as a bit whiney. Considering that Lovell was trying to teach her important stuff, she just moaned, and even when she got the sort-of chance to meet her great-great-grandmother, and visit Scotland, (which she had been moaning about in the previous book) it once again wasn’t good enough, which got old quick.

Then we had the dreaded love triangle. Both Rick and Lovell featured in this story, and while Lovell continued to teach Kat, he did have moments where he gave in to how he felt, and there was a bit of tension between the pair. Rick was jealous and whiney though. He felt the need to practically stalk Kat to keep an eye on the pair of them together, which also got old.

The ending was okay, although I thought Kat’s actions were a little rash and unadvised. She totally just went off and did something that she knew she shouldn’t be doing, and once again we were left with a cliff-hanger. I don’t think I’ll be reading the last part of this trilogy though, as much as I want to know what happens, I’ve kinda had enough.
Overall; an okay second instalment, but I won’t be continuing with the series.
5 out of 10.

**This review contains spoilers for book one*

Having re-read RECKONING just prior to reading RELENTLESS, I was expecting a much different story. The sequel focuses not on Kat in high school, but Kat training to become a more powerful witch. Many of the scenes involve her training with Lovell. The story feels linear and for a second book that is forgivable. Kat’s primary mission is to rescue her best friend from the demon that haunted her in RECKONING.

With the focus of the book so transparent, it lacked the gothic suspense of the first one, but adds a magical quality found typically in urban fantasies. The magic within RELENTLESS is believable and so is the history of Kat’s family.

Kat is a much more confident young woman in this book, although her blind eye to Rick’s behaviors made me think that she might make a better fit for Teen Mom 2. Their relationship reminded me of Chelsea and Adam. Speaking of Rick, I absolutely LOATHED him. It felt like he photobombed the book – I swear the book could of been written without him. He was possessive and out of line so many times. He stalked her to make sure that Lovell didn’t steal her. There was a little hint dropped from the demon that Kat didn’t pick up on, but I did…and I hope it means that things aren’t exactly how they appear.

But honestly, the only downside of the book was Rick. The descriptions and pace of the book were great. I love Kat’s character growth, the world-building (especially with Lovell’s home), and the unique magic sprinkled into every scene. This book is a solid 3 1/2 stars, but since I can’t have half-stars on Amazon or Goodreads, I’m rounding up to 4, because this series is worth reading.

Fans of the first book won’t be disappointed, and yes, book one has to be read in order to understand what’s happening.

Relentless is the second book in Molly M. Hall's A Dark Prophecy series. Relentless will probably be confusing for those who haven't read book #1 Reckoning, but in brief: In Reckoning we met teenager Kat, who can secretly see ghosts. Kat's new next door neighbour is the uber hot and mysterious Lovell. It turns out Lovell has his own secrets. Kat discovered a prophecy involving her ancestors, herself and her secret powers. Kat finally gets together with her long term crush Rick (although she has a connection with Lovell.) Kat's bestie Rachel is taken by the 'big bad' in the concluding cliffhanger. Relentless picks up with Rachel still missing and Kat well into her training with her watcher Lovell.

Relentless sees Kat, Lovell and Rick (who is now aware of Kat and Lovell's powers) travel to Scotland in the 1970s (yep it's magic thing). If you've read book #1 you'll be aware of Kat's desire to visit Scotland and to learn more about her family. I found all of the background info Lovell gives Kat on her family and the prophecy interesting (although there is a lot of it).

I have to say I found Rick irritating in the last book and really annoying in this one! After his somewhat shady actions in Reckoning I found his jealousy and obsessing over Kat and Lovell a bit hypocritical. I'm defo pro a Kat and Lovell romance! It was almost bittersweet seeing the hidden clues to Lovell's feelings and his connection to Kat.

I didn't like Kat as much this time around, but I think she was probably overwhelmed by all the information thrown at her and by recent events (poor Rachel).

I enjoyed Relentless (even with the cliffhanger). I just hope Kat grows into her role with a bit more ease in the next instalment!

For Lovell - 4 Stars in my Sky!

This is the second book in the Dark Prophecy series and I would recommend reading them in order. I read Reckoning yesterday(review is below) and was so happy that I had Relentless to start right afterwards. It was a seamless transition between the two books.

I really like Kat and Lovell. You know there is some history there somewhere - a past life or something. Lovell seems to be aware of a deeper relationship between them and while Kat feels the chemistry, she doesn't understand it. She is in a relationship with Rick and so tries to keep her distance from Lovell. He makes a great trainer for her though and she has learned a lot both physically and about her powers from him.

This book deals a lot with Kat's training and the search for some magical items that were hidden by her great-grandmother (or was it great-great grandmother?) Katriona, who is also her namesake. Along with the magical items, there are glowing orbs, portals, and visits from sylphs!

I don't know when the next book is due out, but I really can't wait to read what happens!

"Relentless" is the second book in the 'Dark Prophecy' series. Molly M. Hall continues the story of Kat, Lovell and Rick, which picks up where the first book "Reckoning' leaves off. The plot flows very nicely and answers the questions you had from the first book. The author's characters in the series so far have been very well written and developing as the plot goes on. You really need to read these books in order or you will be a bit lost in what is happening. Actually I think I liked this book far better than the first, but really can't wait to see what happens in the next. Highly recommended for both books and I promise you won't be disappointed.
