This book is one of the best guides for writing clear, concise, coherent and cohesive English, Academic or otherwise. It is useful for both teachers and students. The information is presented logically and clearly. The summaries at the back are especially helpful for students and can work as a checklist for their writing. I recommend this book to everyone and it is even useful for high school students.
This was a nice book to review writing skills, even though I have finished their college years of writing essays. There were a lot of pieces of information in this book about academic writing that I knew how to do, but didn't know exactly how to explain.
There are a lot of practice exercises in here that would be good for an ESL student to try. As for a native speaker, the exercises probably aren't that much of a challenge, though a practicing a couple of questions do provide a quick refresher.
Really enjoyed the structure and progression into writing. A good balance of pragmatics, motivations of the author, and and scope of influence and purpose.
I hated it. There are too many excercises in this book. I felt like a child in the first grade while reading it. But the theory in the book is good and I've learned from it, which is always something :).
As a reference for beginners in academic writing, this book is excellent. I did not even finish it, however, because I studied only certain kinds of essays this year. I would strongly recommend it to writing beginners.
