Fire and Desire #2

The Flame King's Bride

Rate this book
His desire for me burns hotter than flames, but unseen forces threaten to tear us apart.

I was the Flame King’s reluctant mate, a bride he snatched from another man’s funeral pyre. Zabriel was chosen for me by fate, and I fought my craving for him every step of the way.

At seven feet tall and riding the biggest, meanest dragon in the flare, Zabriel is an Alpha who can take whatever he wants and burn those who stand in his way. Yet he healed my wounded heart with coaxing words and fiery kisses until I craved no one but him.

In the midst of war, I found love in the arms of the Flame King.

My first heat is drawing closer and soon Zabriel will finally claim me and make me his. I’m his Omega and his bride, but I’m also a witch. There are many in Maledin who would rather see me burn than become Zabriel’s bride, or even kill their king before he can marry me.

Friends wear masks that conceal their blood-soaked intentions. Enemies past and present are sharpening their knives. Dragons hunt for prey, and protecting the man I love could leave my heart bleeding on ashes.

Author’s note: The Flame King’s Bride is a steamy, non-shifter MF romance set in a fantasy world of magic and dragonriders. Zabriel is a possessive hero, and Isavelle is a strong but sweet heroine. This is the second book in the Fire and Desire trilogy and ends on a cliffhanger.

Read if you like :

Oh I’m sorry but I love these books. It puts you in a weird place where you LOVE it but you don’t know why. I don’t know what Chloe puts in her books but I couldn’t put it down. I read it in a day 💀

In this second book you’ll have more plot and just as much smut as the first one.
And this smut… I don’t know WHY it turned me on but it did. I was ashamed to like it, dude they talked about knot and nest for 40% of the book and I was cringed but I wanted more 😮‍💨
The plot twists at the end didn’t really shocked me, they were kinda obvious but in the good way. Like I expected them but if they didn’t happen I would have been disappointed. Hope it makes sense ?

-spoilers ahead-
I have a few suppositions on Zenevieve and Stesha 👀 I think Emmeric ‘cursed’ them. When they started feeling the Alpha/Omega thing, he made it stop and now they really are important for each other but without the A/O level of devotion.

I think that book 3 will be about our main character’s baby(ies) and maybe they will give their mom (while still in belly) the magic she needs to find Zabriel again

Oh and I don’t think for a second that Stesha will hurt Isavelle. They made us think so with the writing style but he made an oath to Zabriel and he’ll never break it. I trust him, I love Stesha really much 🥺🫶🏼

Anyways, these books aren’t for everyone and check the TW. It’s -18

While I enjoyed the first book in the series I'm not a huge fan of the sequel, unfortunately. I don't feel like there was much character growth and, at least for me, the plot twists weren't twisting.

The few turning points felt shallow, situations that were life-or-deathing to begin with becoming increasingly dangerous, deadly, and devastating just to resolve without any real consequences soon after. Didn't work for me.

At the end we get a relatively common cliffhanger that worked nonetheless. I'm low-key invested again and want to know how the story continues. Considering how checked out I was before the last 5% happening and how frustrated I feel about parts of the book, I don't plan on finishing the trilogy atm.

Where is my MATE?!?!?!?!

📖 Bookish Moments
This was such a fun mix of magic, dragons, and omegaverse goodness — right up my alley. I love a fantasy world full of dragon and dragon riders and this book delivered on the tropes I was hoping for.

Isavelle was my favorite part of this book. I loved how she always spoke her mind. Zabriel, on the other hand… not my fave. His character just didn’t hit the same emotional depth for me!

My biggest critique is that the plot got a little lost in the middle. There were a few scenes where the spice kind of interrupted key story moments — and not always in a way that felt natural. Some felt repetitive, especially when they happened so close together.
But I still really enjoyed this world and the overall story arc. I’m definitely continuing the series!

"Where is my MATE?!?!?!?!"

🎧 Narration Style: Dual
⭐️ Audio Score: 3.5 stars
The audiobook didn’t totally work for me. The female narrator was a lot better. I struggled with the male narrator’s tone.
💭 Final Thoughts:
📚 Book Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️🫶 Would still recommend this to fantasy romance lovers who enjoy omega dynamics, and dragons!!

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the audiobook!

UGAHAJAKKAA THAT CLIFFHANGER!!!!

Let's start from the beginning, shall we lol this baby picks up right where book 2 leaves off. Our babies are separated. Zabriel is injured and looking for his mate, and Isavelle is taken by Zab brother and an enemy from her past. She is beaten, and she learns more about why Zab brother is doing what he is doing, but she does escape and is returned with her mate Zabirel.. BOYYY, that man almost lost her is going ALPHA now when he has her back in his arms. He is 10x more protective of her. I love it! I swear he makes me melt at how much he cares for her.

We do get many fake and real heat moments, and boy, the spice was 💦💦💦💦💦 like for a fake heat lord. I was fanning myself, hehee.
We get some more info on the backstory and some snips of side charas. Along with trust issues because honest I can't trust anyone.
Honest, I think Zab and Isa can only trust each other and their dragons because I'm side eyeing everyone and everything.

And that cliffhanger like I said above!!! I need book 3 asap!!!

Genre: Fantasy Romance
Type: Book 2 of 3 from Fire and Desire series
POV: First Person - Dual
Rating:

After a distressing incident with the Shadow King, Isavelle Harrow’s escape provided only temporary relief for her mate Zabriel. With the fate of the kingdom on a precipice, they must be vigilant as more enemies emerge in a way they least expected.

While Book 1 was a slow-burn introduction to the world, this book focused more on burning desires. I felt the story was slow until about 70% of the book. I enjoyed discovering Zabriel’s past and the dynamics with the people close to him. The new characters added intrigue to the plot, and I’m looking forward to learning more about them.

Holding me in his arms, he leans down and growls into my ear, “Who’s Alpha’s good girl?”

The Flame King's Bride is a story of ambition and betrayal. It would appeal to readers who enjoy sexy fantasy romance.

Man, did I not like this book. This is my first omegaverse series and probably my last as the omega designation seems to be inherently sexist and the author really struggled to spin it into a feminist tale. Generally, I try to lighten my feminist lens when reading romance/erotica novels because then I would simply never be able to read them at all, but about halfway through The Flame King's Bride, I just couldn't let some things go. I hate that this book is carrying so much weight in my brain so I will keep it short as to what I had real issues with. The first book had less of these problems and everything I mention below is for the 2nd book in the series.

Omegas being fated to alphas who abuse them. I am not against dark themes in books, nor am I against unhappy endings. However, it seems like the author didn't have the time or the skill to actually delve deeper into what it means for omegas (shown generally to be women, but we do see a male omega late into book #2) to be soulmates with the alphas who abuse them. There could be a very good book about Ravenna attempting to navigate both internally and externally a life in which she is fated to a man that abuses her. The author tells us many times that separating Alphas and Omegas is painful and torturous, so Ravenna's attempts to leave him while still feeling devoted to a man that both hates and craves her could make for a nuanced story about abuse. But the author would have to be willing to delve deep into heavier topics, which she doesn't really seem to do. Many dark themes/plots are brought up with no weight behind them and not really handled at all.

Isavelle being mad that Stesha isn't (as far as we know) romantically interested in Zenevieve. A girl he raised after her parents died. We saw a scene of him gifting her her dragon when she was thirteen. Even if you want to argue that this fantasy world has a different culture and different values of the modern day, I just don't accept that. Possibly mating with someone that you've known since they were a child, and you were not, especially in addition to the fact that he raised her for so long is gross. Even after the cliffhanger makes this actually less likely to happen, Isavelle's attitude annoyed me so much I have a whole paragraph about it.

Zabriel constantly distracting Isavelle with sex. My god, there's a whole subplot in here about Isavelle trying not to take the "mindless sex-obsessed omega" delineation to heart and believe that she is more than just a sex object. But she tells Zabriel it's important to get to her magic lessons on time and he pretty much commands her to have sex with him instead. She wants to talk about Maledin while in her false heat and he starts having sex with her. She wants to talk about the amulet and he starts having sex with her. She's trying to gain power, knowledge, and independence and he's always distracting her. I know this is an erotic novel so we expect sex scenes but the specific timing of them comes off as disrespectful.

My last point is not really related to the others, but most of this book has flowery language with a slight medieval dialect/syntax that authors use when trying to show that characters are in the past without actually speaking Old English. This is perfectly fine. But Zabriel imagining the names Emmeric could have called Isavelle to insult her with the phrases "stupid omega fucktoy" and "brainless doll" like some modern day incel really took me out.

1 star for Isavelle being thicc and 1 star for the dragons.

I’m disappointed to say I think this book tried to do too much, and as a result, did very few things well. There are two plot developments that make no sense whatsoever.

1. Isavelle is in Emmeric’s evil lair and he’s having her beaten and threatens to rape her. But then he explicitly prevents the High Priest from assaulting her and they get into a fight, leading her to make a run for it. She find a room with a dragon in it, and Emmeric gets so freaked out that he hands her a key to leave. What? Why would he let her go? A flimsy excuse is provided (he can get her any time), but what was the purpose of this?

2. The ritual. Okay, so half the book is building up to Isabelle’s first real heat. Then all of the sudden, the crone from the dragon-magic faith starts insisting they should do a long dropped ritual where the alpha and omega spend her first heat apart to prove how strong they are. Make it make sense, please! The reasoning is this will help the population learn about alphas and omegas. But it’s unclear how this “ritual” will accomplish that. For some reason, Isavelle and Zabrial agree, and (to the surprise of no one) it was all a trap to try to kill Isavelle because apparently some of them suddenly really hate witches. Even the method of trying to kill her doesn’t make sense. They succeed in isolating her from her mate, friends, and dragon. And then they leave her to her endure her heat alone, without any of the comforts an omega needs. But why wouldn’t they just slit her throat? Seems a lot more efficient.

Add in the confusion about Zenevieve, the whole brief side thing with Ravenna, Kane, and the wild dragons, the quest to find the missing humans, and the really sudden shift of opinions on witches (seriously, witches didn’t cause any of the mess for anyone, but somehow they are to blame or everything and can’t be trusted?), the plot just turned too messy and incomplete for me.

It’s well over a year until the next book comes out and I doubt I will read it. I’m bummed, because I think this could have been a great story.

She is still my mate no matter what, and I won’t let her leave me. I will hold her close and adore her even more than I ever did. I won’t allow anyone or anything to make my mate feel like she is broken or used or tarnished.

🔥 Non-shifter omegaverse
🔥 Dragon riders
🔥 Fan-worthy spice
🔥 Sweet, innocent and feisty fmc
🔥 Dragons that you want to protect at all cost
🔥 Mates
🔥 Evil villains and despicable males

I always love it when sequels take off where the previous book left off, especially when it left off with such a big cliffhanger as the first book did (spoiler alert: this book will do the same and broke my heart in the process). The story progressed through all the false and true heats and the main characters slowly find out more and more about what the hell is going on under those mountains and how to possibly stop them. Some side characters get more attention this book and I loved that Isavelle came more into her own whilst at the same time accepting everything that comes with this whole omegaverse thing. 👀 Luckily, Zabriel - our favourite himbo - is still swoon worthy but also just really funny.

The past few minutes have been hazy. Have I been saying and doing some very stupid things? Surely not.

Really, the sass of Isavelle and Zabriel being so unserious and good-hearted really made me so happy. Even when this book didn't make me giggle and kick my feet as much as the first, I still really enjoyed it. That ending though ... CRUEL.

Spoilers for literally the last paragraph:

Safe to say I am very impatient for the release of the third book.

Really struggled with this one, the writing at times I found painfully lacking. The premise is a 4 - 5* with the Dragons, locked away Kings and omegaverse but the writing, and structuring just drags it down to a 2*.

The lack of personalities beyond 'touch her and you die' trope makes the characters boring and blend into one another. The constant spice in this seems to become a way to distract the FMC. It's constant spice scenes over plot and world-building, to the point where I started skipping them.

It sometimes felt like the author threw plot points suddenly at you, with no real introduction or fleshing it out. As an example, one plot point I felt this for was the These plot lines needed a lot more filling out and strength to them to get me to buy into them. All of these weak plot points just suddenly carried the plot, and became a huge driver for the entirety of the conflict within the second book. It just felt thrown in there to pad the book out.

I am conflicted whether to read the next book just to finish the series since I got this on Kindle Unlimited, but the writing is just painful.

God bro, it’s always ‘Alpha, give me your knot’-this and ‘Alpha, ride me like your dragon’-that. How about we consider ‘Alpha, stop infantilising me’-this. Or perhaps even ‘Alpha, you’re as dumb as you are tall and your ability to govern a kingdom is seriously lacking’-that. Honestly bro, I guess what I really want to see is any semblance of a plot that doesn’t revolve around gratuitous banging, nonsensical world building, or the alarmingly high rate of sexual violence. But I dunno bro, maybe that’s just too much to ask for.

Are you fucking kidding me right now? You end a book like that???? I fucking hate cliff hangers and now you’re telling me I got to wait at least another year or half to get the last book. Mother fuck…………!!!!!

Anywho I am a horrible liar. The next book I will try to finish quickly will be a serial killer romance and then I will finish off As Good As Dead by Holly Jackson - Edda is doubtful and I want to prove her wrong 😑

After a brief spell with the Shadow King, Isavelle returns to Zabriel with intense fervor to find her village and to find a way to break the barrier. With Zabriel being her Alpha, he continues to protect his Omega and fight for his kingdom.

“When you beg me in that pretty voice, you know I crave to give you everything you want.“

Narrated in dual POV, Zabriel and Isavelle combine their strengths while simultaneously waiting for Isavelle to come into her first heat. The intensely innate need to knot is palpable and the focus of much of this book. However, when the stakes are raised, the plot surges with adventure, chaos, deception and avarice. I continued to love the dragons as characters and the entire world in which this story occurs. With a cliffhanger ending, I look forward to reading the conclusion of Zabriel and Isavelle.

The Flame King’s Bride is essentially a good versus evil theme. This book would appeal to those seeking a steamy Omegaverse romance.

This book picks up right where book 1 finishes and I was so excited to get back into this story. I found it interesting hearing and learning more about the big bad in this book but I especially enjoyed Isavelle (FMC) and Zabriel (MMC). Seeing Isavelle grow into herself and her designation whilst also seeing her relationship with Zabriel blossom was *chef's kiss*. Can't forget the dragons!!! I love them and I LOVED Isavelle's relationship with her dragon, Esmeral 🥺🥺

There were some characters in this book on some BULLSHIT; I was in shock. From the first heat ritual to how this ended I couldn't believe the way some of these characters were acting. I cannot wait to see what happens in the next book because it is VERY clear that some people need to be put in their place...

The ending gagged me omfg??? I can't wait for the next book!

Thank you, NetGalley, for the ALC of The Flame King’s Bride!

This audiobook had a lot going for it, especially with the dual narration. Both narrators did a fantastic job bringing the characters to life, adding depth and emotion that made the listening experience engaging. Their performances truly elevated the story, making it easy to sink into the world Chloe Chastaine created.

That being said, the story itself felt a bit repetitive at times. While the premise was intriguing, certain elements seemed to cycle rather than progress, which slowed the pacing. I enjoyed the dynamic between the characters, but I found myself wishing for more development and fresh twists to keep things moving.

Overall, this was an enjoyable listen with strong narration, and fans of fantasy romance might appreciate its immersive world and character-driven moments. While it didn’t completely wow me, it had its strengths, and I’d be curious to see what Chastaine writes next!

I’m hopelessly in love with this series and now I must wait for the final book in the series. All the way til February of 2025, how will I survive from that cliffhanger.

This series is definitely in my top 10! Dragons, dragonriders, witches, warlocks and fated mates everything is magical and fun. Oh and the love in this book is to die for. I’m absolutely head over heels for the two M/Cs. For anyone that wants a romance fantasy and an Omegaverse in all its glory, I highly recommend this book to you!

Spicy

Wow. Ok this was really good. I had to go back and listen to the first book before listening to this. I hadn’t realized this was a second in series. The first book was slow burn material and about building the world and connection of the two main characters.

This book was everything that one wasn’t. This had the spicy spice sauce poured all over it.

Beware there is a heck of a cliffhanger! Need book three ASAP!

If you’re a fan of fantasy romance then this series is definitely for you.

This second installment of Chloe Chastaine’s Fire and Desire series is action packed with dragons and steamy Omega goodness, from page 1!

Isavelle and Zabriel have such great chemistry, and I enjoyed seeing their trust and commitment to one another develop into something truly special.
Book 2 sees a lot of new faces come into play, and some old enemies are re-introduced making this a very exciting and edge of your seat nail-biter of a story.

Once again, we’re left with one heck of a cliffhanger, but I’m so intrigued,& fully invested in these characters so I loved every minute. So ready for book 3 of this trilogy!

"In the midst of war, I found love in the arms of the Flame King."

After how book one finished off, I was eager to read this part and let me tell you that there are even more twists and turns in this compared to book one! I really loved this smart and powerful version of Isavelle and it showed that she had truly grown as compared to when she first met Zabriel and she definitely has a lot of potential which is waiting to be explored. Which is why I can't wait to read the next book to see how far her powers can go and how will she save Zabriel, herself and their kingdom from all the sufferings. Zabriel and his devotion and care for Isavelle was so cute! I really adored him and the way he always supported her and came to her rescue was commendable! I had a great time reading this part of the story and some chapters were really unpredictable which added to the thrill. Also, a certain character was introduced along with his omega and I cannot wait to find out more about them too! I'll be patiently waiting for the next book to come out because the ending in this one has me on the edge of my seat!

This is the sequel to The Flame King's Captive/the second book in the Fire and Desires series. What an amazing ride this book was. Just wow.

Once again, the writing was first-person dual POV through the perspective of Zabriel and Isavelle. It was cool to understand what these two were going through individually. It was just terrific.

Of course, the romance aspect of the book was the heaviest. I loved Zabriel and Isavelle together and can't wait to see more of them in the next book. I truly admired their deep loyalty and respect toward each other.

The story and characters were awesome. Dragons, curses, and magic were key parts once again. Speaking of dragons, I loved Scourge and Esmeral and everything to do with them and the other dragons. I also liked that this book expanded on the characters' backstories and issues of the last book, leading to new situations and plotlines. And what plot twists and cliffhangers! I am speechless. I NEED the next book. 🥲

✅Omegaverse/dark/paranormal romantasy
✅Dragons/dragon riders, curses, magic/witchcraft
✅Touch her & die/who did this to you?
✅Fated mates

I'm starting this review with the ending: what the heck happened on that last page?!

What a great addition to the story this book is. We finally get to see Isavelle and Zabriel happy and in love - and after all that angst and slow burn in the first book, it's well worth it.

The action, mystery, and loads of betrayel continue in the story with many new twists. It is all quite fast-paced, so you are in luck if you prefer this style. Regardless, the story is so filled with action that you can't seem to put it down.

We see Isavelle really step into her own skin, grow from her experiences, and acknowledge her role in her story. Zabriel, as always, is there to support her without an ounce of doubt. His ever growing ego is large as can be, but you can't help but love the guy. He is ultra possessive but allows her to thrive and grow at the same time, as long as he can let her out of bed to do so 😆.

Now that ending! So much happens that you are left spinning up until that last sentence. You think you know where it's headed, but get twisted to a different path. I love a good cliffhanger, and this doesn't disappoint

As expected, I can't wait for book 3!

I was happy to see the plot pick up more in this second installment. We still have a lot of spice in here but it fits with the overall theme of Alpha/Omega relationships.

We added some new characters with some twists and turns along the way. I think there is more than meets the eye with a lot of these side characters and can’t wait to divulge more into them!

The spice again was high and 🥵🥵. I will say, i do get over the overuse of the words “rut”, “knot”, and “heat” lol but I like a good spicy series to read so have enjoyed it.

The ending is a cliffhanger for sure, but I believe book 3 is going to show that it’s not all what it seems. I think there may be some bait and switch in there. That’s my prediction.

I eagerly anticipate reading book 3! 😊

“You’re my beautiful little dragon and everything I crave.”

A great continuation to the series! We pick up right at the cliffhanger from book one and the plot takes off pretty quickly from there. I adored the growing love and relationship between Isavelle and Zabriel. As more designations begin to appear in the people of Maledin, we get to see more dynamics of alpha, betas, and omegas in this book. Theres a great plot as Isavelle continues to explore her magic abilities and Zabriel continues to learn how to rule his kingdom effectively while being head over heels for his Omega. The spice picked up quite a bit and 😮‍💨😮‍💨😮‍💨😮‍💨🥵🥵🥵🥵 these two are so hot together #knotting. We definitely ended on quite a bit of a stressful cliffhanger again so I am desperate for book 3 to learn what happened!
