The Haydn Yearbook periodically presents distinguished collections of scholarly essays concerning all aspects of Haydn's works and his life and times. Volume XII, the second to be published by Indiana University Press, stresses Haydn's contemporaries. The articles in this issue are "The Symphonies of Carlo d' A Contribution to the History of Viennese Instrumental Music during the Second Half of the Eighteenth Century," by A. Peter Brown; "Ignaz Pleyel's Correspondence with Hoffmeister & Co.," by Else Radant; "Fruhe Handel--Kenntnis in Eisenstadt" with summary translation in English, by Otto Biba; and "Memoir of Mr. Frederick Kalkbrenner," reprinted from the Quarterly Musical Magazine and Review, vol. VI, 1824, submitted by Peter Riethus. Also included are reviews by H.C. Robbins Landon, I.M. Bruce, Winton Dean, Otto Biba, Robin Stowell, David Wyn Jones, Michael J. Robinson, and Malcolm Boyd of music editions, books and recordings.
Howard Chandler Robbins Landon was an American musicologist, journalist, historian and broadcaster, best known for his work in rediscovering the huge body of neglected music by Haydn and in correcting misunderstandings about Mozart.
