A frontier scout, a healing widow, and a desperate fight for peace.
At the farthest Georgia outpost this side of hostile Creek Territory in 1813, Jared Lockridge serves his country as a scout to redeem his father’s botched heritage. If he can help secure peace against Indians allied to the British, he can bring his betrothed to the home he’s building and open his cabinetry shop. Then he comes across a burning cabin and a traumatized woman just widowed by a fatal shot.
Freed from a cruel marriage, Esther Andrews agrees to winter at the Lockridge homestead to help Jared’s pregnant sister-in-law. Lame in one foot, Esther has always known she is secondhand goods, but the gentle carpenter-turned-scout draws her heart with as much skill as he creates furniture from wood. His family’s love offers hope even as violence erupts along the frontier—and Jared’s investigation into local incidents brings danger to their doorstep. Yet how could Esther ever hope a loyal man like Jared would choose her over a fine lady?

A Counterfeit Betrothal is written by Denise Weimer. This is book one in the Scouts of the Georgia Frontier series. This book is set in Creek Territory in 1813. Esther Andrews has low self esteem. She’s lame in one foot and she’s come to help out Jared Lockridge’s sister in law.
Esther has been though a lot. She was wed to an abusive man arranged by her father. She has her lane foot. She had always been told that she wasn’t good enough. Jared finds her with her home burning and her abusive husband dead. When she meets Jared, and his sister in law start her on a journey of healing.
Jared is strong his faith. He chooses a perfect verse to help Esther with her healing. I loved the interactions between the two of them.
The author has done careful research to bring this story to life. The book is well written. I can’t wait until the next book in the series. Thank you to the author, publisher and Celebrate Lit for allowing me to read a copy of this book. All thoughts are my own.
A story of tragedy, hardship, and healing, author Denise Weimer has written a captivating tale along the American frontier. Weimer’s characters come to life from the turn of the first page as readers come to know their stories and easily relate to them. Readers will enjoy the backdrop of Georgia and the Creek Territory. This sweet story is action packed with plenty of danger, as well as spiritual and physical healing, and of course charming romance, that will keep readers wanting to read more. There aren’t a lot of books that discuss the war of 1812, but this is one of them. Readers will not want to miss this excellent book!

A fascinating, emotional story set in early 1880 Georgia. Esther was my favorite character. She was definitely a survivor, and I loved her journey of faith & strength. She was dealt a tough life in her early years and then was wed to a man (by her father) who was abusive. She had a lame foot and was always told she was not good enough for anything. That all changes when she meets Jared Lockridge who discovers her when her husband is killed and her home burns down. She is taken to the Lockridge cabin and spends months there. The many events that happen to her help her to begin a journey of faith and better self-esteem. Jared, his brother and sister-in-law help bring these changes in Esther's life. There are some harrowing moments that happen to Esther and the sister-in-law when they are alone (the men have to go off to fulfill scouting duties for a military fort far away). I liked Jared's character also. He was patient, reliable and kind. I learned so much about frontier life in Georgia in the early 1800's! It was very interesting! Very, very challenging. I really loved this book!
"A Counterfeit Betrothal", by Denise Weimer, is a captivating journey into the early 1800s, offering a warm and emotional charged story. The author’s writing style immersed me in the historical setting, and her ability to convey themes of hope, faith, family, and romance is truly impressive.
Jared and Esther are both well-crafted and relatable, and I was drawn into their struggles and personal growth. Esther’s hardships and emotions are portrayed with empathy, while Jared’s kindness, characters, and faith made him so easy to adore.
Weimer’s storytelling weaves a tale of inner healing and developing love. I was quickly invested in Jared and Esther’s journey, the vivid imagery kept me hooked, and the ending left a lasting impression.

#CoverLoverBookReview received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions are 100% mine.
This intriguing novel is a fine example of a good historical read—incorporating actual history within a riveting fictional account that draws the reader right in. The compelling story evokes the readers’ sympathy for the troubled characters as they deal with multiple trials. The situations portrayed seemed fresh and quite realistic peopled with authentic characters that come to life and make a memorable impression in readers’ minds. You can’t help but feel for them with all they must deal with and to root from them to overcome their hardships and dangers. The book held my attention to the very end. We read of troubles with some Native Americans as well as close relations with others, offering a glimpse into the struggles of the day. I would recommend A Counterfeit Betrothal as a worthy choice for a book club discussion. I received a copy from Celebrate Lit. all opinions are my own.
This story drew me in from the opening page with its richly descriptive imagery that made me feel like I was at the scene, detecting the scent of smoke in the air, feeling and hearing the wind swirl leaves about a cabin or hearing the thump of a wild animal encroaching. The historical detail and research that went into this novel was quite evident and I felt like I was not only reading a great story but learning some history in the process. Life was not easy on the frontier and the author illuminated this with the day-to-day hardships endured by the characters. I absolutely loved main characters Jared Lockridge and Esther Andrews and the way they interacted with each other, tentatively at first and then with greater depth and emotion as they got to know one another and some invisible barriers came down. A faith thread wove itself through the novel, especially through the reading of the family Bible. The verses Jared chose to help Esther heal from her self-loathing and difficult past were so inspiring, heartfelt, and emotionally stirring, you might need tissues. I’m glad there are more books to follow, as this is the first in a new series. If you are looking for an inspirational book that will grab your attention, tug at your emotions and shed light on a lesser-known part of U.S. history, definitely pick this one up!
I received an advanced reader copy from the publisher and BookFunnel via Celebrate Lit. A positive review was not required and all opinions stated above are my own.
3.45 This is one of those where the heroine thinks herself just never good enough. Then she finds religion. But she's still not worthy of his love. 🙄 The first half dragged a bit... But the 2nd half was definitely more a 4 star, but still with the whole "not worthy, not good enough" theme... Drives me crazy. However, I found that I was satisfied at the end, it had a good epilogue and things closed up nicely.
The story takes place in Georgia in 1813, during a time when Creek war parties were attacking farmers' homesteads. Jared worked occasionally as a scout and lived with his brother and sister-in-law. Jared was betrothed to a woman from Augusta and was building a home for her later arrival.
Jared, while scouting, came upon a burning cabin and a dead man shot with arrows. He also finds Mrs. Andrews, now a widow and since she has nowhere to go, he takes he with him. The story gets complicated from there.
The story is one I couldn't put down. There was one unexpected situation after another that could change Jared's future. The ending wrapped up all unanswered questions and was heart-warming. The character's faith in God and family kept the characters strong and optimistic. I loved the lessons they learned along the way. An uplifting and heart-warming story of feelings of rejection to acceptance. The sweet love story weaved in warmed my heart. Highly recommended.
I received a complimentary copy from the author and voluntarily chose to review it. All opinions are my own.
I love a story with a character who reminds me of beauty from ashes. Esther is lonely and doesn’t have much self esteem. When she is rescued from a fire by Jared her life changes. The back story on Esther is emotional. She has been mistreated by her now dead husband. The scars she has runs deep and she is afraid to get close to anyone. I could feel her meekness and anxiety as she is taken in by people who are very giving.
Jared is a rugged man who is hard hardworking, honest and faithful. He is someone women would love to be courted by. I love how he helps Esther and brings her home to his family without any hesitation. He is very gifted in cabinetmaking and hopes to one day open his own shop.
This time period shows how hard it was to make a living and the author highlights the story with historical facts that make readers feel as if they are there experiencing everything along with the characters. I was fascinated by all the herbs they used to treat illnesses or used for cooking. The candle making process sounded very fun and creative.
Oh how thankful I was that Jared shared Jesus with Esther. She has been lied to, made to feel shameful and unloved. I cried as she tried to understand how God could save such a person as she. I began to hum “ Amazing Grace” as I continued the story. Her heart was so broken yet she yearned to be accepted and loved. All she wants is to be free from her past and it was now within her reach. God always has a plan and it was by no accident that Jared was the one to rescue her from the fire that day. Can she find a way to forgive herself?
The story does have a little danger in it that illustrated how strong Esther had become. Her journey is not without a look at who she once was. I loved how the author used this character to show how God’s unconditional love can save a person who thought she was worthless. A beautiful reminder for all of us is to never give up hope and know that “we are fearfully and wonderfully made.” Esther and Jared’s story is one that I won’t forget.
I received a copy of this book from Celebrate Lit. The review is my own opinion.
I truly enjoy Christian Historical Fiction Books. A Counterfeit Betrothal by Denise Weimer is the most current book in this genre that I read. it is Book 1 in the Scouts of the Georgia Frontier Series
The time is 1813 in Georgia and Jared Lockridge is serving his country as a Scout. He is hoping to get back his Father's heritage by bringing peace between the Indians and the British. He really wants to open his Cabinetry Shop as he is very skilled in Woodworking. He sees a burning building and rescues a woman who just lost her husband who was shot and killed. Esther Andrews is the woman he rescued and now that she lost her home, she agrees to stay the Lockridge home to help Jared's Sister-in-Law through the Winter. Esther finds herself drawn to Jared as she watches his Woodworking skills. She doesn't think a relationship with Jared is possible as she has a Lame Foot and she is certain Jared wouldn't want someone who is a widow, although she acknowledges that his family really shows LOVE and HOPE in these day. Jared begins investigating some local incidents and it puts his family and Esther in danger. Will there be a relationship between Jared and Esther? Will they survive the danger lurking?
WOW, this book is definitely a PAGE TURNER. The book starts out and ends strong! Esther has been through some tough times in life and was in an abusive marriage. She feels "FREE: when rescued by Jared and taken to his home for the Winter. She does have self esteem issues and always second guesses herself. Jared is a KIND and Gentle person. He is strong in his faith and encourages Esther with Scripture. I really love that Jared really cares for Esther and shows her that she is worthy. the author really has done the research on the Historical value of this book! The book is one of Faith, Hope, LOVE, and Family . GREAT BOOK!
A Counterfeit Betrothal, the first book in the Scouts of the Georgia Frontier Series by Denise Weimer is one marvelous read. The story takes place at a Georgia outpost area this side of hostile Creek Territory in 1813. The characters are true frontier folk who can survive and thrive in lonely wild places. I was amazed at what not just the men were able to do but the strength and determination of the women. I also was sadden by the prejudice and disrespect of anyone who was different or had a disability. However, I was overjoyed to read of God’s grace that others had and shared with all.
This was a romance but also a story of restoring faith, sharing God’s love for all, and finding family. Jared and Esther’s story was wonderful but before it could be completed there were unexpected surprises and twists that served to make this an even more compelling read. So addictive that now I await eagerly for the next in the series. I am hoping that it is the story of one of those twists I mentioned earlier.
I have not always been a keen reader of historical fiction but the publisher Wild Hearts Books has made me turned me into a strong one. A Counterfeit Betrothal is one very fine example of why. Highly recommend not just those who read faith inspired fiction but to all who are interested in reading quality historical fiction.
The publisher Wild Hearts Books provided a digital ARC. I have voluntarily decided to read and review, giving my personal opinions and thoughts.
A Counterfeit Betrothal is a fun historical fiction novel that has danger, war, and romance all together in one novel. I’m a huge lover of historical fiction so this book was right up my alley. While my primary knowledge area of history is the Civil War I still enjoyed reading and learning about the times of the War of 1812. I have friends that reenact that war though I’ve never done it myself.
Esther has had a hard life. But she’s such a strong character. I think she’s my favorite. I loved getting to see her grow and learn as a character. She was being hunted or stalked by the person who killed her husband and yet she just kept on going. Add in Jared who is a wonderful hero character and you’ve got a great love story getting ready to go! Plus you’ve got the history going on which was fun to read and learn.
The descriptions are amazing and really suck you in and make you feel like you’re really there. Kudos to the author for her research and sharing of her knowledge. Faith and the Bible are mentioned throughout and are an integral part of the story.
You’ll love this book and I can’t wait to see what comes next in the series!

This story takes place during 1813 in the frontier of Georgia. There is danger and trouble all around with Native Americans and others just out for revenge. Esther Andrews is a young woman who is caught up in the middle of some of that turmoil. Her husband has just been killed by an arrow and the Native American who did the deed is trying to take her away. With her cabin on fire, which alerts Jared Lockridge, Esther is saved. At least from one cruel existence, her marriage, but now what?
Jared rescues Esther and takes her back to his family home where his brother and sister-in-law live. Something about Esther brings out his protective instincts. It is more than the loss she just endured or her lame foot. After spending time together, his feelings turn to more. But Jared is not free to just give his feelings away, he has given his word to another woman, his betrothed.
This was an interesting story about Georgia and what was going on there and how it was affected by the War of 1812, the scouts that made sure the land was safe, and the people who carved out a life there. Who will Jared choose, and will Esther stick around long enough to see? A story of many dangers and surprises.
I was provided a copy of this novel from the publisher. I was not required to post a positive review and all views and opinions are my own.
A Counterfeit Betrothal by Denise Weimer is a Christian Historical Romance. This is the first book in the Scouts of the Georgia Frontier series. Esther Andrews suffered at the cruel hands of her now-deceased husband. She was emotionally abused, and dealing with his cruelty destroyed her self-esteem. I appreciated the imagery and descriptive words that allowed me to feel her feelings.
Jared Lockridge, a scout and gifted cabinetmaker, works to secure his future. While returning from a scouting expedition, he came across Esther, her deceased husband, and their burning cabin. He instantly makes the decision to bring Esther to the home he shares with his brother and pregnant sister-in-law.
This book will keep you reading to discover how the story will end. Sharing the love of Jesus with Esther helps her to grow in faith and trust.
Violence erupts on the frontier, and Jared's scouting threatens their doorstep. But you will have to read this book for yourself to see how the story ends.
So if you enjoy Christian Historical Romances, check out A Counterfeit Betrothal by Denise Weimer for yourself. I received a complimentary copy of this book, but this in no way influenced my review. All opinions are my own.
What I think you should know: A Counterfeit Betrothal by Denise Weimer is a Christian Historical Fiction It is set in 1813 Frontier Georgia. It is the first book in the Scouts of the Georgia Frontier Series. It can be read as a standalone
What you might need to know: Esther has a clubbed foot. Esther was abused by her husband and made to feel inferior due to her disability. This book tries to give an authentic portrayal from a settlers perspective, it does include both conflict and friendship with Native Americans. However because it is authentic it is not always pretty
What I think about this book: This is such an incredible story. I am a huge fan of historical fiction and enjoy this unique story of Frontier Georgia. I particularly enjoyed this story as it tried to show that things were not always as they seem. It was great to watch Esther grow from a frightened woman into someone more confident in herself. Jared was a really neat character as he fought to find a way to honor both his commitment and his heart. I appreciate how the author used Christianity in the story. I will definitely read more of the series.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from Celebrate Lit, this in no way influenced my review. All opinions are my own
The setting of this book is the Georgia frontier in the years 1813-14. The author did an excellent job of using historic details and vivid description that helped me understand the dangers, difficulties, and joys of living on the frontier during that time.
The story of Esther Andrews was quite compelling. Esther’s life was not an easy or happy one. Mistreated and abused by her father, and later by her husband, life did not see to hold happiness for Esther. Even when Esther was rescued from her dire situation, she still had trouble believing that she herself could be of worth to anyone.
There’s action, danger, and romance throughout this storyline that had some major twists in it that I did not see coming and kept me several times reading longer than I should have as I was drawn deeper in the story. I thought that Esther’s spiritual transformation was the best part of this book. She found hope and peace in Jesus during a turbulent time in her life, and the message of trust in God and in His unfailing love for us is one for us to take to heart, too. Readers who enjoy reading Christian historical fiction will enjoy this book.
I voluntarily received a copy of this book from the publisher. All opinions are my own.
A tale of survival, healing, hospitality, and love, A Counterfeit Betrothal is a beautiful immersive frontier story. Esther, a broken woman recently widow, finds herself the recipient of unexpected kindness and care when she is taken into the Lockridge home. Feeling obliged to earn her place, she throws herself into serving the family. Only, at every turn, they seem intent on lavishing her with acceptance and true, no-strings-attached love-- experiences as far removed from Esther's life as the family's wealthy background. Can she learn to see herself as they do? And can she trust the man who appears to grow more fond of her with each passing day?
This story was absolutely beautiful from start to finish! Not only were the characters believable and likable, but the author immerses us fully into the wild, wooded world of early 1800s America. Not unlike Laura Frantz's "Courting Morrow Little," this is a story of life-changing love set against the backdrop of war, uncertainty, and the struggle to carve out a life from the heart of the wilderness. The themes of redemption and healing in this story are especially beautiful, as is the portrayal of physical disability. This is the first book I've read by this author, but it won't be my last!
Not too long ago, I read a book that started very similar to this one. It sounded like the same character down to the same hair color and walking with a limp. Honestly, I was kind of bummed and started filling out the predictable story in my mind, but I was committed to read the book so I kept reading.
I was so pleasantly surprised as I kept reading to see what direction it would go in. It was so much better! It gives a very convincing argument why you always keep on reading, even if it starts what you would expect to be predictable.
I enjoyed the characters and how they each grew in different ways. The gospel was interwoven into the story as Esther is introduced to the idea that she is worthy of so much more than she has ever been taught. I enjoyed the friendship of Esther and others in her life, which added to the story.
This was the first book I had read from Denise Weimer. I look forward to reading more of them in the near future. The book was easy to read and hard to put down because it was not predictable for the reader.
I would recommend this book. I received a complimentary copy of this book. All opinions are my own and I was not required to leave a positive review.
1813 Georgia. Esther was born with a club foot and had a limp. She was verbally and physically abused by her father, then later her husband. After she was made a widow, Jared came to her rescue and changed her life when she went back to his family's homestead to help his sister-in-law. Verbal abuse can be even more long lasting. It takes a long time to build confidence and trust. This is a precious story of frontier life and living off the land. Esther was taught healing plants and ways by an Indian woman. Secrets are uncovered. Esther - a healer that needs healing. It's a good long story told in stages; quite intricate, faith filled and healing, satisfying. Wonderful read.
I received this book free from the author, publisher and CelebrateLit book review bloggers program. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own.
A Counterfeit Betrothal is a captivating historical fiction by Denise Weimer. Set in the early 1800s, it is the first in the Scouts of the Georgia Frontier series, and I look forward to reading more in the series. I was drawn into Esther and Jared's stories right from the start. With strong, evocative, and realistic characters and a plot full of fast-paced action and twists and turns, the author does a great job of bringing this time period to life. The tension of wondering what would happen next and if there would be a happy ending certainly kept the pages turning. The panther scene was quite edge-of-the-seat! Readers who enjoy historical fiction will not want to miss A Counterfeit Betrothal. I received a complimentary copy of the audiobook from the author. Pilar Witherspoon did a great job narrating the book, which made for an interesting listening experience. A favorable review was not required, and the opinions are my own.
After being rescued from an Indian attack, newly widowed Esther Venable Andrews finds the will to thrive because of a patient and kind Indian scout named Jared Lockridge. He and his family offer Esther an acceptance that she's never known and introduce her to the joy that comes from embracing the Christian faith.
Author Denise Weimer seamlessly combines historical facts and fictional details in this heartwarming story of love and friendship. I loved watching Esther's self-esteem blossom, and I admired Jared's struggle to do what was right. This memorable tale has exciting adventure, sweet romance, and an inspiring journey of hope and faith. I recommend A Counterfeit Betrothal to all who enjoy historical Christian fiction.
I received a digital copy from the author. There was no obligation for a positive review. These are my own thoughts.
Denise Weimer’s Scouts of the Georgia Frontier series starts off with A Counterfeit Betrothal. I adored this story with Jared and Esther. I loved these two main characters so much. I instantly felt a connection to Esther right from the beginning. I understood her and wanted to see how it would end for her. I thought this story was great and have now found a new favorite book from this author.
I am giving A Counterfeit Betrothal five stars. I highly recommend it for readers who love to read books from the clean historical fiction genre. I am eagerly awaiting the next book from Scouts of the Georgia Frontier series to see what happens next.
I received a copy of Denise Weimer’s A Counterfeit Betrothal from the publisher, but was not required to write a positive review. This review is one hundred percent my own honest opinion.
Gentle Esther was sent by an aunt to her harsh father on the frontier, to keep the books in his ramshackle trading post. Though she was despised and abused for the slowness of her club foot, this pioneer woman seized every opportunity to equip herself with useful skills. How I admire her!
Life on the edge of Indian territories was rarely safe for a woman at a time when there was little law and women had no rights. While local Cherokees were friends, the Creeks joined the British in war with young America. The town was filled with rough soldiers building a fort and clearing a road into the interior of Native lands.
This tale will capture your heart as you cheer Esther on, as you yearn for a gracious man to choose her above all the rival beauties. It’s a sweet romance and a satisfying pioneer tale.
I enjoyed A Counterfeit Betrothal so much. Weimer gave us a disabled character who was brave and confident in her abilities. But vulnerable when it came to her worth as a woman. Esther questions Jared's affection for her at every turn. She must overcome past hurts and Jared must do what he can to prove to this exceptional woman that she is worthy of his love. The setting-Georgia, during the War of 1812 was so engaging. I loved that Weimer used all the historical research she'd done on her home state to bring this story to life. Weimer is a gifted writer. This romance like all her other books is thwarted with difficulties and the reader can't put down the book. At least, this reader couldn't put it down until I'd finished it. Looking forward to reading more from this author.
Denise Weimer's A Counterfeit Betrothal, book #1 in her Scouts of the Georgia Frontier, is an endearing book for those who love history and the American Frontier. She writes stories rich with historical accuracy and the characters are just like your friends. Set in 1813 in the Georgia Frontier, the characters encounter danger of many kinds day and night. Jared Lockridge is the perfect hero with a loving heart that instantly connects with the heroine, Esther Andrews. Esther has a disability, and she deals with awkwardness and insecurity until she finds the man who sees her for who she truly is. This book is a keeper. I received a free copy to read in exchange of an honest review, with no compensation from the author.
I thought this book was good. I liked the characters and I liked how Jared helped Esther to see herself as God sees her. I liked watching their love story develop as they got to know each other and trust each other. I also liked the history that the author included. I also liked the surprises that the author through in because they were unexpected but added to our interest in the story. Will definitely pick up the next book in the series when it comes out.
I received a complimentary book from publishers, publicists, and or authors. A review was not required and all opinions and ideas expressed are my own.
Counterfeit Betrothal is a powerful and moving story of the people who forged a home persevering against all odds. A people who learned to trust In God and to receive His hope for a new life amid fear and intentional cruelty. Yet God finds them and sustains them. Facing unimaginable challenges many lived their belief and shared it with others. It was not an easy or pampered life; its dangers seemed unlimited, but still courage, kindness, faith caused them to do good as best they knew how.; they stood firm. I absolutely recommend this well-researched, well-written book. God is God always.
This is a historical novel that takes place in the early 1800’s in wilderness settlements in northern Georgia. I live just south of this area and one mile away from Hog Mountain Road, which made me do some research into my area, that was fun. It is amazing to read about the hardships of the early settlers and to realize how far we have come. The main character is a gal who has lived a hard scrabble life, she is rescued from an attack and has no family to take her in, so she goes to the home of her rescuer. It is an interesting story with some surprising twists and turns in the plot and a satisfactory ending. I loved it!
This was a good story. It is a story about Easter learning that she wasn’t worthless. This was a love story that is based on a second chance for love for both Easter and Jared. I really didn’t see the ending happening like it did. Well, some of it I did, but others I didn’t. The Gospel is shared a little in this story. This story was well written and I was able to feel some of the characters pain as I was reading.
I received a complimentary copy from the author and Celebrate Lit and these opinions are my own.
I absolutely loved this audiobook. The narrator was great and so was the story. This is my first book by this author and well, if her other books are as great as this one I found me a new author. I’m not actually going to tell you about it other than it has romance, forgiveness, is faith filled and just plain inspiring. At least it was to me. Oh let me say it had surprises along the way. I got close to one surprise but didn’t figure it all out. I won this book from a contest (I think). I was not required to write a positive review. All opinions are my own.
