Michelle Mars' novel "Frisky Intentions" captivated me from the first moment I started reading it. The story focuses on Summer Palmer, who runs their joint bakery, Frisky Bean, with her best friend Kevin Johnson. The business concept is charming in itself, with sweet treats being given charmingly provocative names, adding a twist to the world of pastries.
Summer's character immediately resonated with me from the first pages. She's a slightly clumsy, energetic young woman who, while sometimes trips over her own feet, is full of life and bravery. Although she trusts the guidance of her goddess cards, she doesn't let anyone control her life, but takes her destiny into her own hands. Her love for eating and for delicious food, her awkwardness and her sexual openness made her even more endearing to me, as I often recognised myself in her. Her genuine smile and her determination are all qualities that make her easy to like.
The other main character, Jason Winter, is the complete opposite of Summer. He built his career as an agent on his own, without any help, so he is used to fighting his battles alone. He is precise, deliberate, and always knows exactly what his clients want. Jason feels the only way to be successful in his work and personal life is to keep the two strictly separate. But when a prospective client sends him into Summer's flirtatiously erotic pastry shop, he's immediately captivated by her smile.
Summer and Jason's relationship is not lacking in sexual attraction, but what makes this story truly special is Jason's character development. Step by step, Jason realises that instead of perfect dates, Summer wants him to give her not just half of himself, not just parts of his life, but the whole of him. This inner transformation was inspiring for me, as Jason learned that success can be achieved not only at work but also when we can share our lives with someone.
One of the most interesting aspects of the book is that both protagonists' pasts have a profound impact on their current lives and choices. While Summer was able to grow up in a loving family even after her mother's death, Jason never experienced this kind of support. This contrast brings a fascinating dynamic to their relationship and also shows how important it is to come to terms with our past in order to truly be able to move on and build healthy relationships.
Overall, Michelle Mars' novel "Frisky Intentions" is a charming story, but also touches on deeper themes, full of realistic characters and emotions. The author's delicate sense of humour and the sparkling chemistry between the main characters make it a truly enjoyable read. I felt particularly close to Summer's character, inspired by her confidence and the way she approaches life and her own sexuality. Also, Jason's development shows the importance of knowing yourself and facing your emotions.
This novel is a promising start to "The Frisky Bean" series, and I can't wait to dive further into this world of erotica and delicious pastries. I received a free copy of "Frisky Intentions" by Michelle Mars via BookSirens and am voluntarily leaving a review.
